Questlove brings his band of merry men to the Crystal Ballroom tonight. The Roots are one of the few remaining hip hop bands, as in they are a group not just a single artist and Questlove takes pride in the fact that they have stuck together for more than ten years now. This is a must see show.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from independent musicians is how they can not receive any airplay on commercial radio stations. It is common knowledge that the corporate-owned radio stations do not support local music and only play pre-programmed playlists in certain genres to satisfy a mysterious demographic, a demographic that advertisers want to reach. In other words it is all about commerce and not about the music.
Well along comes a movie that hopes to spread the word on this particular state of affairs via a grassroots network. Portland plays host to the film on February
3rd, at 1:30 pm in the Whitsell Auditorium at the Portland Art Museum as part of the Reel Music Film Festival. This award-winning film is called Before The Music Dies and all the details are here at the web site.

Portland’s own variety show Live Wire! will be taping it’s next radio broadcast at the Aladdin Theater this Friday May 18th. This episode’s lineup includes two Portland based acts, Dolorean and Ashleigh Flynn. Dolorean will be performing songs from their latest relase You Can’t Win and Ashleigh Flynn will be backed by an all-star band featuring Chis Funk from the Decemberists and studio drummer extraordinaire Gregg Williams.
The show will also feature a converstation between punk icon Dave Allen and CDBaby founder Derek Sivers about changing the face of music.
