pocket remixes radiohead covering björk, moves to portland
2007-11-21 06:34:53
I got an email yesterday from Dave Candler who sent along the news that Richard Jankovich of the Burnside Project has remixed Radiohead’s cover of the Björk song ‘Unravel’ under his Pocket moniker. He tells Stereogum “I was feeling really inspired by all this Radiohead activity and was feeling a need to be creative,” Pocket wrote, attaching his souped up version of Thom & Co.’s subtle, spare Björk cover. There’s more of the story here at Stereogum as well as two other Pocket remix MP3s, and you can track back to the ‘Entanglement’ session from the Radiohead live web cast here at Gorilla vs Bear. Dave’s email also says that Richard aka Pocket is moving from NYC to Portland. Listen closely to the track below and you’ll hear the great woman herself. Gang of Four, new music and the PDX connection
2007-11-30 15:43:05
Buzz about the new songs-in-progress from the influential UK post-punk group Gang of Four has already leaked to the giant online pubs like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. But what some of these sites fail to mention is that there’s a huge connection to Portland, OR. Dave Allen, the bass player for the band, lives in Portland (and truth be told contributes content to this and other music blogs) and is an established voice in the future of the music industry. Initially posted on his blog, Pampelmoose, Allen has let the public in on the genesis of writing, recording and rehearsing potential new material for an upcoming Gang of Four release. Below are three of the latest demos plus a short video of the band in Istanbul earlier this month. Gang of Four - “Password” (demo) [MP3] Gang of Four - Fakin’ It (demo) [MP3] Gang of Four - American Man (demo) [MP3] Backstage in Istanbul video

portland’s musical minimilist, ethan rose, gets pitchfork love
2007-12-06 18:41:32
Ethan Rose has received a coveted 7.4 rating on Pitchfork for his new album. Here’s an excerpt - For three weeks I have attempted to finger the thematic underpinning of Ethan Rose’s Spinning Pieces. A collection of three pieces recorded between 2003 and 2007, each track sources a different mechanical device: music boxes on “Miniature & Sea”, player pianos on “…The Dot and the Line…”, and an automated carillon– a 100+ ton tower containing dozens of large bells– on “Singing Tower”. Each source is digitally kneaded into extended, wordless compositions. Ethan Rose - Singing Tower [MP3]

a year in portland music
2007-12-11 18:55:08
Quasi, nothing new from them in ‘07 or did I miss it? Portland’s music community has kept up the creative pace this year. It’s amazing how many of the city’s bands have kept forging ahead while every week it seems a new band appears on the creative map. In terms of new and not so new bands turning out the good stuff it has been a banner year. Menomena dropped the follow up to the acclaimed The Fun Blame Monster with the equally acclaimed Friend and Foe, Loch Lomond came back with a heightened sense of purpose and delivered the well received album Paper The Walls and in the hip-hop world, Sandpeople gave us Honest Racket. Below is a smattering of MP3s from some of the bands grabbing attention this year, and yes I know I haven’t covered everything that came out this year but these all came across my desk as it were….. As always if you like what you hear you can buy music by these folks at iTunes, Amazon or Emusic or in some cases directly from the b

a dandy warhols wedding…
2007-12-23 16:46:05
I spent the day and night of December 22nd at the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon. The occasion was the wedding of the Dandy Warhols leader, Courtney Taylor and his sweetheart, Lockett Albritton. As you can see in the picture I took, Courtney and his male band mates were dressed in hand-tailored outfits reminiscent of 17th century French lieutenants replete with dazzling patent leather knee-high boots, while Dandys’ keyboard player Zia led us all from room to room as mistress of ceremonies. The fine Burgundy flowed by the case and kilos of lamb were consumed. There were literally hundreds of guests causing the rooms to overflow with people wherever the crowd surged. All in all it was a very fine and Dandy wedding. Here’s a cut from one of Courtney’s favourite bands, The Black Angels - Black Grease [MP3]
