Decemberists in December 2007-09-21 14:40:42
The December

Cumulatively entitled The long and the short of it, the 5th will feature the long of it focusing on the band’s epic, progressive compositions, the 6th dubbed the Short of it will highlight their more succinct, pop-leaning material and finally the 7th will be a Request night that will allow the audience to help decide which Decemberists songs will be in the set.

the aliens, hot chip remix and a portland show 2007-09-19 14:50:31
The Aliens, former members of the Beta Band, have a lovely remix
of their track Robot Man by Hot Chip. They play Doug Fir on October 3rd.
From their website - Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit and a certainty of intent that immediately sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers. Inspired by Sergio Leone and Serge Gainsbourg, Brian Eno and Brian Wilson, Larry David and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, their songs in the key of Fife reference the past whilst belonging resolutely to the future. These Aliens have history - between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones were members of the Beta Band. Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker.

So, MusicFestNW may be behind us but the music lives on, especially if like me you were lucky enough to grab a copy of this year’s music festival compilation. Comes with some pretty cool bands both national and local. I’m not sure if it is on sale anywhere but you might find it in the used bins at your favorite CD store after everyone’s ripped it and turned it in. Here’s a cut from it…

eskimo & sons, rilo kiley and jonathan rice @ musicfestnw 2007-09-08 13:18:05
Day 2 and Friday night kicked off in exactly the laid-back-kind-of way I liked it too. Eskimo & Sons played the opening set at the Towne Lounge offering up their multi-layered compositions that seem to totter on the edge of collapse. The saving grace, as always, is the inter-play between vocalists Dhani and Danielle which truly is the icing on the cake. Ths is how rock music ought to be. Watch the video here. [The Towne Lounge apparently has no lighting so things are grainy but worth it just to listen.]
Although I’m very familiar with Jenny Lewis [does that sound wrong?] as I’ve spent plenty of time with her last solo album where she paired up with the Watson Twins, I have to confess to not having heard Rilo Kiley [clearly I’ve moved further away from alt rock than I thought.] after tonight’s set I can see why. Without the magnetic personality of Jenny Lewis this band would be nowhere; rather plodding, pedestrian songs ably performed sure, but again, take
the thermals live on kexp from the doug fir 2007-09-07 18:48:54
The Thermals, Portland’s best rock trio dropped in to the Doug Fir this afternoon to deliver an impromptu set of their particular brand of frenzied pop-punk anarchy. As always they were awesome and you can see why by watching 3, yes 3, videos. I’m sorry I’m lame and didn’t catch the song titles but I swear that at least one of the songs is by The Wipers another great Portland outfit of yesteryear….

sandpeople and the blue scholars at the roseland 2007-09-07 15:15:24
So once again I missed Spoon. I just had to check out Portland’s new favorite hip hop sons, SandPeople. Judging by the reaction from the floor of this sold out venue these guys are going to give Portland’s Lifesavas a run for their money. The video is grainy but worth watching.
And right after SandPeople Seattle’s The Blue Scholars killed it too. Here’s video from the side of the stage and video from the audience POV. And just in case you’re wondering “what’s up with all this hip hop?” Tonight is alt rock night for me - Rilo Kiley, The Upsidedown, Typhoon and Eskimo & Sons. Stay tuned…

Video for “Razor” off Luther
’s new record “Repair”
Luther Russell
returns to Portland, his former hometown, for a record release show at Berbatis Pan on Sept 29th. As some of you may remember Luther seemed to be everywhere in PDX around 2000-2001 releasing two solo albums and producing, among others, two of the best local CD’s ever to come out of Stumptown, Fernando’s Pacoima and Richmond Fontaine’s Winnemucca. After a six year hiatus he’s back with his new release Repair.

danish band, slaraffenland plays towne lounge this thursday sept 27th 2007-09-25 18:59:17
I love the interweb. I just got an email a few minutes ago from Adam Heathcott who, along with his wife Sara, runs Hometapes out of Boulder, CO. His email was to let me know that one of the bands on his label, Slaraffenland, who hail from Copenhagen, Denmark will be playing the Towne Lounge in Portland this Thursday alongside Donny Hue & The Colors and Oh Captain. The MP3 I grabbed from the link that Adam sent sounds amazing, have a listen and I think you’ll agree. A show to check out for sure.

portland’s white rainbow release new cd 2007-09-25 10:51:04
Portlander Adam Forkner aka White Rainbow creates magical musical moments that one must spend time with. No hurry here; he lists his influences as Jon Hassell, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream and if you know of at least one of those artists, then after listening to the Waves MP3 from the new White Rainbow album Prism Of Eternal Now, you will understand. A perfect start to my day.

Here’s a clip of Justice
tearing it up at Holocene last night. These guys don’t DJ so much as fire off sharp, staccato cut ups interspersed with power drill bursts of synth bass lines all designed to make you bounce off the walls, and the crowd at Holocene did just that.

Nick Lowe tonight 2007-10-08 16:25:14
Does anyone remember that 1979 concert film called Rock for Kampuchea? Somewhere in the middle of that movie there was a performance by a band called Rockpile which, for the film, featured guest vocalist Robert Plant backed by the regular lineup of Dave Edmunds on Guitar, Dire Straits drummer Terry Williams and Nick Lowe on bass. It was a highlight of the movie and my first introduction to Nick Lowe. After that I think I saw the video for Cruel to Be Kind and I’ve been a fan ever since. Of course Nick has several other hits, was in another great band called Little Village and has produced countless records. He’ll be in Portland tonight performing at the Aladdin theater.

Dirty Martini’s comment about the song:
“This is one of our favorite songs to play live. We think it sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a pillowfight. Imagine the pillows and pink feathers flying and wine coolers getting knocked over. Works, doesn’t it?”
Dirty Martini will be appearing at the Aladdin theater on October 30th. More info at www.dirtymartinimusic.com

typhoon, portland via salem 2007-10-16 20:44:42
I’ve been diggin on Typhoon for a while now even though I keep missing their shows. They are label mates with Eskimo and Sons on the esteemed Boy Gorilla label. Here’s what Typhoon have to say about themselves….
“Typhoon started as an idea way back in 2004 on the 18th floor of the Tokyo International Youth Hostel. Since then, songs have been written and recorded. Basically our whole gang of friends since the beginning of high school have joined forces to create what Typhoon is now. We all grew up in Salem, the grand capitol city of Oregon, and now most of us reside roughly 40 miles north, in Portland, the city of roses. The few who don’t live in Portland are child prodigies we picked up off the streets and nursed back to health but reside in Salem until they can survive on their own.”

Decemberists cancel tour 2007-11-05 12:18:55
Due to what apprears to be a serious illness with one of the band members the Decemberists have canceled all of their remaining tour dates which include several European and North American cities and, sadly, the three-night tour wrap-up at the Crystal Ballroom here in Portland. A message on their web site includes the following…
It saddens us to disappoint our fans. We hope everybody understands it
is only because of an extreme situation that we had to cancel a tour
we’ve all been excited about doing since the idea was originally
hatched.
Our deepest apologies but at this time no plans are being made to
reschedule the dates. Ticket holders should seek refunds at point of
purchase.
Yours,
The Decemberists
