the detroit cobras, tonight @ doug fir 2007-08-20 12:23:18
Bloodshot Records recording artists The Detroit Cobras bring their brand of raunchy rock and R’n'B to the Doug Fir tonight (Monday Aug 20 - short notice I know.) Here’s what the press is saying:
“No offense to Amy Winehouse, but it was the Cobras‚ Rachel Nagy who first reinvented the 60s soul-pop diva as a boozy, punk-informed, smart-mouthed chanteuse in the late 90s.” Falling James LA Weekly
“Your average Best Buying doofus won’t give a damn about any of it, but one thing I’ve noticed about the Detroit Cobras is that if you actually play them for someone that knows nothing about them, or you take someone to see a show, the band’s so totally infectious and convincing that you’ll have a new convert on your hands in no time.” Jeff Clark Stomp and Stammer
“…the Cobras do the unthinkable: make rock n’ roll simple, fun and irresponsible.” Bruce Miller, Magnet

mark the date, cinematic orchestra plays portland 2007-08-20 23:32:53
In a rare appearance the UK’s premiere Nu-Jazz outfit, the aptly named Cinematic Orchestra plays Portland’s Aladdin Theatre on September 16th.
Here’s what the UK blog The Milk Factory has to say about their new album ‘Ma Fleur.’
“…..now, five years on, Cinematic Orchestra returns with an epic hush with Ma Fleur. Conceived as a soundtrack to a film that does not exist (yet?), it features a melancholy hero portrayed by various singers, including the brilliant-as-always legendary Fontella Bass. While Every Day relied more heavily on 21st-century musics, including synthesizers, cut up drums and vocals, and trip-hoppy bass lines, Ma Fleur is a much more restrained work. Plucked acoustic guitars, gentle strings, and slowly disarming vocals are front-and-center here; a headphone album if ever there was one. If Every Day was the chaotic sounds of an exhausted life, Ma Fleur is a weekend retreat to reconnoiter in the countryside.” Read More.

the return of old time relijun 2007-08-24 14:01:02
Portland’s Old Time Relijun gets the props big time -
“Unless I read them wrong (and I may; the music itself is the opposite of describing it: it’s wet, and bloody, and it smells like fresh earth and red cinders, and it’s a good goddamn time, is what it is) Old Time Relijun’s theory is that ‘the underground’ (I know. I know. I know.) isn’t an identity that reinvents itself once or twice per generation, but a permanent place within a culture – maybe within all cultures – where styles don’t go in and out of fashion but are always floating around in the air just above our heads.” — John Darnielle, Last Plane To Jakarta.

the last town chorus, hawthorne theatre 2007-08-28 09:35:19
The Last Town Chorus play the Hawthorne Theatre October 4th. Although not exactly a band The Last Town Chorus is the revolving ensemble led by singer/writer/lap-steel-guitarist Megan Hickey. I’m not sure if it’s her voice or how she wrangles the lap steel but she is very beguiling. And others have been beguiled too - “She sings like an Angel and plays lap steel guitar like the Devil.” - Village Voice, “The Last Town Chorus’ aching lap-steel sound moves men to tears” - Chicago Tribune, “Strange, dark magic…” - Sunday Times (UK). Here’s a video of her take on Bowie’s Modern Love and Tickets to the show.
