Two New Sony Alpha
DSLR Bodies!!
This is seriously what I've been waiting for, higher end models for the camera line that I've grown accustomed to. :) According to an interview, unfortunately in Japanese, but available translated from the Dyxum forums , Sony is announcing two new bodies for the Sony Alpha line. One, pictured on the left above, is a midrange model, which is a step up from the A100 consumer grade level camera. Though not exactly a replacement for the 7D(Alpha-7), it will be comparable. The unit on the right is the high end "professional ready" body. From the looks of the chamber above the body, it looks like they are planning for a larger and brighter viewscreen. I hope!!

The Shockingly Bad Olympus 725SW Shockproof/Waterproof Digicam 2007-03-27 10:02:08 Gifting Is A Challenging Process
Buying a gift for someone is always a challenging process. Not because people are just hard to shop for, but rather, because it is easy to fall into the "what would _I_ want" trap. That is the case with me, since I love photography, I tend to look for a camera I would like, or interpret the requirements the way I want them to sound.
So it was, that I was buying my wife a new digicam. Something small, that fits in the purse/pocket, is fast enough to photograph our ferret-like daughter, and is fairly resilient. That is, childproof.

At Last! A Theme That Works! 2007-03-18 08:42:45 The Search For A Theme
As you may know, I employ the Drupal web platform to handle site content, layout, and even content editing. It's just so much easier than hand coding my own site, like I had done in years previous. The downside, as I acknowledged then, is the fact that you give up a certain amount of control, in exchange for the ease of use and the focus on content.
One such aspect where I lost control was the theming and layout of the site.

Regarding the Sony A100, A Reprise... 2007-03-17 10:38:29 There should be a law about late night postings....
The morning after writing my thoughts on the 7D and how the A100 would never replace it, since it was essentially a 5D body, I went to dpreview and took a look at their full review. Yes, it is really a 5D body, but the internals are definitely different. Mostly, for the better, I think.
While I will gripe about hand-feel and the rugged body of the 7D, I do have complaints about the camera memory to card performance of the 7D. I have the latest firmware update, so the camera performs well, but still... it could be better. :)

Shooting With The Konica Minolta Maxxum 7d(Dynax 7D / Alpha 7D) [Why I'm waiting for something better than the Sony A100] 2007-03-12 04:09:34 Boy, Do I love Shooting With the Maxxum 7D!
I originally started shooting with an Olympux D410, then switched to an Olympus C2100UZ. Loved shooting digital, but hated the slow response of the D410. Loved shooting with the optically stabilized 10X zoom of the C2100UZ, but hated the fact that I only got 2.1MP and only up to ISO 400. Also, SmartMedia is horribly unreliable. :(
When I upgraded to the Minolta A1, I was in love! Zoom ring! Nice DSLR body design, so that it felt right in the hands. Vertical grip! It was honestly a joy to shoot with. It was my, "getting my toes into the SLR waters" camera, which led me to many months of soul searching between which camera to get, that was a true D-SLR.

Nikon D40X and preview 2007-03-06 18:52:21 Nikon D40X and preview - Pre-PMA 2007: Just under four months since the D40 and Nikon has announced an upgraded ten megapixel version of the camera. The new Nikon D40X is essentially identical to the D40 apart from its ten megapixel CCD, a lower base sensitivity of ISO 100 and faster continuous shooting (now up to 3.0 fps). Obviously the competitive target for this camera is the Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi), and it is clearly priced to achieve that at $799 including the 18-55 mm kit lens. We have a detailed hands-on preview of the Nikon D40X. [Digital Photo Review]
Wow, The Nikon D40 didn't seem all that worthwhile, especially when you compare it to its older siblings, the Nikon D80 or the Nikon D200. However, with the Nikon D40X, the specs definitely make it a great camera for someone who want's to try out Nikon's line of fine products(lenses, flashes, etc), without spending too much on the body. I find myself definitely wanting to give this one a look-see wh Read more:Nikon

A Joy To Use, The Canon SD800 IS (Elph/IXUS) Digicam 2007-03-29 10:05:50 The Canon
SD800 IS Elph/IXUS is a complete joy to use. As far as digicams go, it's kinda hard to find one that beats this one in terms of speed and quality. Coming in at 7.1MP, the camera's DigicIII processor really churns through the images and video clips! I had originally bought an Olympus 725SW digital camera, but after a disappointing performance, I returned it in favor of this camera, the SD800 IS.
Speed. Fast Enough To Catch A Speeding Daughter!
Seriously, the main concern was being able to take a decent picture of our active daughter, both indoors and out. This camera is able to do that! Granted, some issues with the flash firing and over exposing her face, but it was able to actually capture a photo of her, of the expression we wanted to capture, not one 2-3 seconds after. With this, we were quite satisfied.

Bad Decisions Continue To Hurt Down The Road ( RAW vs. JPEG ) 2007-04-13 12:53:31 What's Worse Than Missing The Shot?
Getting the shot, but the resulting image lacks enough detail/quality to be useful. That's like getting the 2nd best hand at the table and watching someone else rake in the chips. During one recent trip to Florida, to photograph family, reptile life, flowers, butterflies, and birds I deviated from my normal policy of only shooting RAW or RAW+JPEG and switched to shooting only JPEG. Why? Because I was running low on space on my cards and my laptop was sitting some hundred miles away.

Arctic Butterfly SL724 : Spin spin spin! 2007-04-21 10:14:17 It Spins! It Charges! It Attracts Dust Away From Sensors!
One of the evils of shooting with digital SLR(s) is the fact that dust settles on the sensor. The result of this is that you get dark blobby spots in your photographs. This sucks, if you want that nice clean looking photograph to come out. Or if those dust blobs happen to obliterate some important detail in the photograph.
The most common way to get rid of dust is with a blower. When that fails, people have resorted to two methods: The Wet, and the Dry.
The dry method involves brushes. But not just any brushes, brushes which are soft enough to not damage the IR filter of the sensor, and which are clean enough not to leave oily streaky residue behind.

The Fine Art of Smearing Your DSLR's Sensor! (Sensor Cleaning, Part I) 2007-04-21 09:46:40 Digital Sensor
Dust Sucks!
Look, in most everyday shooting, most people probably won't notice the small specks of dust building up on their sensor. I mean... why would they? They are all but invisible. However, close down that aperture and take some longer exposure shots, and you suddenly see them. Amorphous black blobs of photo ruining dust. Why must they be there!? Why that shot!? Arg!!!!!
It just so happens that such a thing happened to me recently, while I was trying out my new F/2.8 17mm-50mm Tamron lens. I took some nice bright outdoor shots with the aperture stopped down to F/22, handheld. The composition was okay. What I wanted was to get a nice "wow, look how nice and open this scene is"... and the shot looked great. That is... until I got back to my laptop and look at the images up close.

Get A Look At Those Eclipse Soaked PEC Pads! (Sensor Cleaning Part II) 2007-04-25 09:06:12 Clean Once Again (almost)
Well, got my wet kit in the mail a few days ago and I have to admit, after the brush fiasco, I really dreaded using a liquid on my DSLR's sensor. Still, I can't shoot with it having smears all over the sensor, so about half an hour ago, I went and cleaned my camera gear with the items I had purchased. (Items listed at the bottom of this posting).
Well, so here's the question. How bad was it, really? If you were to go and discover dust on your sensor... how would dust look? If you tried to clean your sensor with a brush and fubar'd it up, how bad could it possibly be? And does the wet method actually work to clean it up?

Revisiting Workflow :: Storage Nightmares!! 2007-04-30 23:07:59 The Storage Dilema!
So, you've got your ultra-cool and new digital camera that shoots some umpteen megapixels. You've got your awesome digital workflow that creates deltas and non-destructive revisions, allowing you to make as many changes and edits you want. You've got this whiz bang 500GB storage system... that just ran out of space!? What? Hold the phone, 500GB filled up? How!?
You've now encountered one of the fun aspects of digital asset management, storage.
Look, at 6MP(megapixels), you've got a 10MB-18MB RAW file to work with. If you shot it with Jpeg, you have another 2-8MB of JPEG to go along with that RAW file. Worked with it in an editor and need to save settings? Another 1-8MB for the deltas. Got revisions and copies of the processed images, well, that's another 8-32MB of storage. After all's said and done, for each image you shot, worked on, exported, and saved... you have generated something on the order of 21MB - 66MB of storage. Y Read more:Nightmares

Digital Photo Review - Tue, 03/27/2007 - 05:47
Adobe has today fleshed out its release

be two versions made available when it begins shipping next month. The
standard edition will be familiar to existing users whilst a second
'extended' release will be aimed at industries as diverse as medicine,
architecture and 3D design which already use image manipulation
packages but require specific tools and features not currently included
in Photoshop. This split in the product line serves to extend Adobe's
potential market whilst not forcing traditional users to adopt the new

Picture this... instead of having a photoshoot in a near clean-room studio environment, you host a murder mystery party. Your models, your thesbians(actors), and you all gather at a photogenic locale and host your murder mystery party. You, of course, play the photojournalist for the local paper and want to document the events, as they unfold. Where your guests, models, actors, and makeup/fashion artists have a great time roleplaying, you end up with some high energy and truly unplanned photographs.

Look, they are your photographs. You shot them, and from the moment you hit the shutter release, barring any work-for-hire and contract clauses giving away your work, the photograph capture in your camera belongs to you. People need to pay you money to make use of your work. By default, photographs and other artwork, belong to the one who created them. There is a defactor copyright
