Gold Bug - Chart 2007-03-22 20:49:04 A few posts ago, I mentioned AUY, a gold mining company. Naturally, the price of this stock has a very strong correlation with the price of gold. Here is the chart for the price of gold over the last 7 months or so:
Gold has been steadily recovering ever since it peaked around $700 right before the commodities correction around June 2006. Although it took a beating along with the rest of the market a few weeks ago, the trend appears to still be intact and the price of gold is steadily inching its way back up to old highs. I am currently holding shares of AUY and TRE.
Other gold stocks I am watching include GG, GFI, NEM, and BGO.

BBI - Antioco to Leave 2007-03-20 21:30:44 Antinoco’s announcement today of his eminent departure by the end of the year briefly halted BBI’s recent recovery and seemingly caused a spike in NFLX. This seems to be the classic case of investors overreacting. Antinoco and Icahn’s rocky relationship did not help much as Blockbuster struggled to regain its share of the video rental market.
One of the keys to BBI’s turnaround over the past few months was their Total Access program that allowed Blockbuster to differentiate its own online rental program by leveraging their primary advantage–the brick and mortar stores. While Blockbuster’s online program was initially plagued with delays and complaints, leading investors to exit in droves, it seems that things are finally on the right track. Blockbuster Online reached 2 million customers this January, compared to Netflix’s 6 million plus. I believe that with the new video game consoles as well as high definition DVD formats on the rise, Blockbu Read more:Leave
AUY - Yamana Gold 2007-03-18 10:07:06 I’ve liked Yamana since it was trading in the mid 7’s. “Yamana Gold, Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of precious metal mining properties in Brazil and central America.” Specifically, the company’s primary metal of production is gold. This stock is a direct gold play. After the large drop in the price of gold following wall street’s recent heavy correction, I believe gold is poised to make a comeback. AUY was on the cusp of a breakout when the market correction brought it back down; however, as the price of gold continues to rise, so will Yamana. Here is the stock chart:
Other mining stocks I am watching: TRE, MMG, NXG.

KNOT - Stock Chart 2007-03-28 11:06:42 KNOT is a stock I have been following ever since it’s IPO a few years ago. Throughout this period, I’ve traded the KNOT successfully on many occasions. This wedding company operates an online wedding portal and also publishes several magazines, catering (obviously) to newly weds as well as those in the planning stages. The wedding industry is quite large, with over $72 billion spent on weddings annually. However, the past year’s runup was put to a halt after The Knot posted fourth quarter earnings that fell short of analyst expectations, causing the stock to drop almost 20% in a single day.
Despite this, the KNOT has made several moves to position itself well for future growth. On 2/14/2007, they announced a strategic alliance with iVilliage.com, allowing The Knot to provide content for a new channel on iVilliage. This alliance comes on top of KNOT’s acquisition of WeddingChannel.com, which allowed consolidation of users as well as an expansion into the regist Read more:Stock

JohnChow.com 2007-03-30 09:09:11 A few posts back I wrote a post about JohnChow.com’s Wii contest. Now I am taking Mr. Chow up on his offer to review his blog in exchange for a linkback on his site.
John Chow is a dot com mogul who was (apparently) able to cash out before the internet bubble burst. I first came across his site about a month ago and immediately subscribed to his feed. His blog covers a variety of topics, including cars, fine dining, how to make money online, SEO tips, as well as other random miscellaneous ramblings. Essentially, hes living the dream of every entrepreneur, and I hope to one day make it as far as he did.
Props to you, John.

AMD’s Troubles Continue… For Now 2007-04-03 13:09:17 Only about a year ago, AMD
’s stock was hitting 52 week highs. Their aggressive moves with their Opteron 64-bit processor had boosted their share of the server/workstation sector from a paltry 2.8% in 2003 to 27% in 2006. They had just formed a partnership with Dell, and it seemed that every report was showing increased market share. Things were looking pretty bright for the chipmaking underdog. Here’s AMD’s chart for the past 2 years:
The fall from grace has been long and painful. Looking at the chart, it would seem that the troubles began around March of last year. Since then AMD has been continually lowering guidance and missing analysts’ expectations. A recent pricing war and Intel’s introduction of their Core 2 processors—which are far superior to AMD’s Athlon and Opteron chips in performance, performance per watt, and other price/performance metrics. However, the situation may change in a few months when AMD releases it’s new chips, Read more:Troubles

PCAR Uptrend 2007-04-08 09:55:21 Take a look at PCAR’s chart. I came across this stock while doing some research on CAT… what a beautiful uptrend!
From Yahoo Finance: “PACCAR, Inc. engages in design, manufacture, and distribution of light, medium, and heavy duty trucks, and related aftermarket distribution of parts worldwide. The company’s trucks are used for over the road and off highway hauling of freight, petroleum, wood products, construction, and other materials. It also provides finance and leasing services to its customers and dealers.”
Industry trends such as higher freight volumes and equipment replacement cycles are expected to help boost sales. PCAR’s strong performance has been featured in Business Week, TheStreet.com, Cramer’s Mad Money, and Motley Fool. The stock has been uptrending for over a year and has no indication of stopping, posting strong earnings and revenues each quarter.
PCAR Insider Selling 2007-04-09 14:31:57 Thanks to Sergio for the link to PCAR and SEC Filings:
The article takes a look at some suspicious PCAR insider selling since October 2006. Of course, some of these are probably just exercised options. It’s always a good idea to look into insider trading when researching a stock.
The trend is your friend, but make sure to get out once it breaks. Read more:Insider

Pearls Before Breakfast 2007-04-13 21:37:11 This is completely unrelated to stocks/investing, but I just came across this article today and it had quite a profound impact on me. The article, Pearls
Before Breakfast
, describes a social experiment conducted by the Washington Post involving a world famous musician, a subway, and some spare change. The results are pretty startling, painting a pretty bleak picture of a society that has become so obsessed with the destination that the journey there is forgotten. It’s a pretty lengthy read, but well worth your time.
