The next Rhonda Rousey?
2008-08-14 10:35:52
This is me and my little future judoka, Lena. As any parent that just absolutely loves their sport of choice, I hope she grows up developing that same love. I hope to start her into judo early on, possibly having her join the actual club classes at age 5 or 6 (she'll be 3 this month), but I'm already starting the education process early. She recognizes judo when she sees videos and she already use

A Day in USA Judo History
2008-08-13 14:24:32
Today is a great day for US Judo! Rhonda Rousey won a bronze medal in the women's -70kg division. For those who may not know, the US has NEVER had a woman win ANY kind of Olympic judo medal, Rousey is officially the first. She lost one match to Edith Bosch of the Netherlands, but decimated everyone else ultimately beating Annett Boehm of Germany for the bronze. I woke up too late to catch her las

2008 Olympics
2008-08-13 14:08:01
People in the US tend to be surprised when they see Judo on a list of Olympic events. Judo has actually been a part of the Olympics since 1964 (1988 for women competitors). As an American judoka, I've been fairly disappointed in the past with judo coverage during the Olympic games. In 2008, you still won't see judo on NBC primetime except in the occasional highlight reel. That space is still reser

Let's get started
2008-08-13 13:51:11
My name is Joe Dan and I Judo. Judo is a martial art and Olympic sport, and it happens to be my favorite hobby. I started learning judo in 1997 and am now a shodan (the 1st degree of black belt). I continue to participate in judo by learning and occasionally teaching at Columbia Judo in Tennessee.I decided to do a judo blog for several reasons. Mostly, I am passionate about my recreational pastti

Getting old sucks
2008-09-03 22:45:08
Man, I'm 29 years old, and I shouldn't be feeling like this. My back has been a little sore for a couple of weeks, but tonight it's killing me. I'm not even old enough to participate in the Masters division of a judo tournament, and I feel like a little old man hunched over a walker. A few people from my club went to visit Dan Smith's club in Dickson, TN to participate in his judo workout. I actua

Home Dojo on a Budget
2008-08-27 12:13:18
I've been wanting to take the extra space in my upstairs bonus room and turn it into a workout area for doing cardio, newaza drills, and uchi-komis. It would be nice to have some tatami or fold-out gym mats up there, but I didn't want to spend over $100. Anyway, here's what I had to work with.Right now, the back half of the bonus room is just a repository for Lena's old toys. We also have a nice t

Mifune on Randori
2008-08-26 10:01:39
I recently pulled out one of my favorite judo books, Canon of Judo, by my hero, Kyuzo Mifune. I've read through it before and used it as a reference for techniques, but it's always nice to go back and read it again as a refresher. In the beginning of the book, he deals with several underlying philosophies of judo practice. Some of them are harder to keep up with than others, but I came away with t

Team USA Judo Results
2008-08-25 14:41:01
Well, the judo portion of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is officially over. For Team USA there were some disappointments, but several strong showings by new Olympic competitors, and one historic medal. Here's the breakdown for Team USA: Women -48kgSayaka Matsumoto lost her first match in preliminaries and was eliminated in her first match in repechage. Her first fight was against Japan's legendary Ry

Reflections of a Shodan
2008-08-22 14:46:47
To many who join a martial arts club, the black belt is that ultimate goal to strive for. From the moment we tie on a white belt, we strive to learn all the required material and techniques to achieve the next rank. We keep adding on to our education and accumulating higher and higher ranks. Then the fateful day arrives and we test for black belt. What a special day! But what happens after that da

The Essence of Judo
2008-08-18 09:09:25
My sensei introduced me to this wonderful judo video available online. It's called "The Essence of Judo" and features one of the masters, Kyuzo Mifune. Some have considered him second only to Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo. The video is just over an hour long and completely in Japanese, but you don't have to understand the narration to appreciate the level of skill displayed. Here's the video in

What is Judo?
2008-09-19 12:29:03
When friends, family, or acquaintances find out that I do judo, I find that most people have the following knowledge about it:- Judo is some sort of martial art.- ......There, that's it. I know they think it's a martial art judging from the "judo chop" hands they make and when they ask me to break a board with my fist. So here's a brief little bit of info for the judo deprived.Judo is:- a martial

Newaza champ in the making
2008-09-16 11:49:06
I've said before that I have high hopes for my little girl, Lena, getting involved in judo. I hope she'll get involved in judo class someday and love it as much as I have. I think by starting her early and guiding her along the way from home, she'll go far. Yesterday gave me a little glimpse of what she may be capable of.Lena recently turned 3 years old, and after all the birthday celebrations die

Judo, Burpees, and Tabata Intervals
2008-09-10 13:05:39
I've been looking for something simple that I can do at home to improve my aerobic/anaerobic fitness. Generally I do pretty good in class randori, but after my first match in a tournament setting I'm usually sucking wind. While looking around for ideas on the judo forum and fitness sites, I repeatedly came across the term Tabata intervals (or sometimes drills or protocol). Tabata intervals are nam

Entertaining Judo Article
2008-09-05 15:26:56
I stumbled across a humorous article last month on the topic of Olympic judo that I really enjoyed. It's written by a guy who has no experience with judo, but enjoyed watching it via the NBC Olympic website. It's kind of refreshing to see someone write about judo who isn't already involved in the sport. My favorite part of the article are the two terms I believe this writer has coined, ippwn3d and

Judo and Life Meet
2008-10-09 10:13:08
This past weekend I actually used judo in the "real world". Most martial artists hope they never have to use their training outside of the dojo, but you have to defend what you love. Unfortunately, it was at a wedding. It was my cousin's outdoor wedding and my little girl, Lena, was the flower girl. The wedding itself went very well and Lena was, of course, precious. It certainly wasn't the disaste

Getting in Shape
2008-09-30 09:49:07
In an earlier post I mentioned wanting to try out Tabata intervals for a short workout on regular days of the week. I successfully completed my first full week. I worked out every morning Monday through Friday doing the 15 minute Tabata workout I outlined before. The first couple of days were rough, but I was already noticing an improvement by day 3. This week I'm starting to intersperse different

Technique focus: Uki Goshi
2008-10-28 09:12:00
Uki Goshi (floating hip throw) is quickly becoming one of my favorite techniques. A lot of people think it is very similar to O goshi (major hip throw), but I find that it has a very different feel to it. For one thing, O goshi requires that you fully load someone on the back of you hip before throwing. Uki goshi instead requires that you load the uke on the side of your hip, similar to how mother

10 Ways to tell if you're addicted to Judo
2008-10-22 09:43:29
Some of these I'm actually guilty of. Number 9 happened to my friend, Mike, a true judo addict.1. When you see someone take a bad fall, you mentally assign a score based on how they landed.2. When you size up someone in a bar, whether or not they have lapels figures into the equation.3. You've ever wondered how hard you would have to slap if you fell off a two story building.4. When you push a cha

Ukemi. That's how I roll.
2008-10-14 09:06:47
Every now and then it's good to go back and review the basics. I often hear the phrase that "You have to learn how to walk before you can learn how to run." In Judo, that translates into "You have to learn to fall before you can learn to throw." The attractive thing about the judo to many people is the impressive throws. A smaller man or woman can easily throw someone bigger with proper positionin

Sprung Judo Floor
2008-11-18 09:16:41
Everyone at our judo club has a little more spring to their step, literally. Over two weekends, some of our members built and assembled a sprung floor using used car tires, lumber, and plywood. The basic construction is that a frame was built around the whole area, tires were layed out in the frame, 2x4s were layed on top of the tires, plywood covered all the 2x4s, then the judo mats were arranged

Strange Happenings, part 2
2008-11-07 09:31:08
I wrote in the previous post about mystery bruises, now on to mystery blood stains. It's not unusual to be participating in a rousing session of newaza and suddenly notice that your or your partner's gi has several fresh blood stains. At this point, newaza is usually halted, the offending wound is found, and then taped up if needs be.Last night I was wrestling with a bigger guy (which is not a rar

The Case of the Mysterious Bruise
2008-11-04 09:57:04
Some of you that don't participate in a martial art or other high impact sport may not be aware of this phenomenon, but others out there will be nodding in recognition. The phenomenon is the mysterious day after bruise. It usually plays out like this:Judo practice is in the late evening so I usually come home to a dark house (my wife goes to bed early), check my e-mail, then crawl in to bed. The n

Judo Chop!!
2008-12-19 11:23:43
It's a bit frustrating sometimes to devote a good portion of your time to a martial art (or any other hobby) and be faced with an overwhelming lack of knowledge from the people you deal with day to day. It's somewhat depressing when you tell someone that you practice judo and then they make a followup comment or question that can range from slightly misinformed to bewilderingly ignorant. Some of m

Judo vs. The Common Cold
2008-12-09 09:27:20
I haven't posted in a while because I haven't been doing judo regularly for the past few weeks. I've got a head cold that seems to have peaked about the middle of last week, so now I'm on the stuffy, painful sinus side instead of the watery eyes, runny nose, constant sneezing side. Either way, judo is rendered much less fun when a headcold is involved. It's no prize for your training partners, eit
