DJ Perplex - 2006 DMC Routine
2007-03-10 08:59:39
Being an Australian based site, I thought it might be suitable to pay homage to one of Australia’s best in recent years - DJ Perplex. Coming out of the woodwork (or should I say steelwork?) a few years back, perplex made a name for himself down under relatively quickly and more recently won the 2006 [...]

DJ QBert - Tip Scratch
2007-02-28 07:08:45
This is an excellent scratch to practice timing and speed without necessarily bringing the fader into the equation. Once mastered one can introduce the cross fader to bring the tips in and out at the desired times. Alternatively you can use the channel fader to gradually fade the tip scratch in and out (or out [...]

DJ QBert - Marches
2007-02-09 12:23:08
This one is a little simpler than the flares I posted last week. Marches are a logical progression of baby scratches and is an excellent way to practice hand-fader timing. QBert explains it well and breaks the motions required for the scratch. Is a nice simple scratch to lead into a combo of scratches.

Scratch Combo Generator
2007-02-09 12:10:29
I used to have a program that you could create random scratch combos if you input all the scratches your are cabaple of. I can’t seem to find it now (I think it was from asisphonics along with ‘the ever’). In searching for it I have found an online combo generator that has an embedded [...]

Fader maintenance
2007-02-09 11:45:45
Qbert demonstrates how to lube your cross fader. I have used WD-40 in the past, that might be bad - I dunno - it did the job on my Technics SH-EX 1200 and Rane TTM-56! It is definately worth doing to get that extra bit of speed and smoothness. For Rane TTM-56/57 users there is [...]

2007-01-29 06:48:44

The Virtual Vinyl package includes Cue as well as the hardware interface and control vinyl to allow turntablists to scratch and mix digital audio and video files. Alongside other packages like Serato Scratch Live by Rane and Final Scratch by Stanton [...]

DJ QBert - 2 click flares
2007-01-28 08:12:54
2 click flares, also known as orbits are a valuable fundamental to practice as much as possible. Qbert makes them look too easy here. When done well this scratch is smoooooozzz.

DJ QBert - 1 click flares
2007-01-28 08:10:03
This is a good scratch to start practicing early because they can be hard to master and there are many variations. So get flaring!

DJ Plus One - still number 1 routine
2007-01-15 15:46:37
DJ Plus One tears this shit to shreds. A very solid routine with razor sharp cuts and some seriously smooth beat juggling - I love the juggle-cuts style too. Very post worthy.

DJ QBert - The Baby Scratch
2007-01-07 15:17:30
QBert expplains the baby scratch. The most basic scratch of all, it is something that should be mastered before moving to the more advanced moves. Practice, practice, practice.

We live on a Hip Hop Planet…

I found this article from National Geographic when browsing Remix Theory the other day (check it out some time). It makes for very interesting reading. The reason for posting this on a turntablism site may be obvious to some but not others so I thought I would justify it. Basically the backbone of Hip Hop is [...]

DJ Craze Needle Droppin’
2007-04-13 18:50:59
Daaaaaaaaamn. These needle drops are tight!!! Who else but craaaaaaze. He throws in a few of his textbook flares and crabs along the way. But hell I still can get over those drops.. ‘no fader - ohh yeaah’. Will post more on how to needle drop soon! Oh yeh and more Craze too.

DJ Craze Showcase
2007-04-13 18:41:24
DJ Craze shows off his infamous turntablistic skills with a bit of his drum n bass influence thrown in. After watching this video it becomes quite apparent why he won three consecutive World DMC titles. This guy is off the hook! His scratches have so much style, his beat juggles…flawless. Respect.

DJ QBert - Swipes
2007-04-15 02:57:14
This is another fader-less scratch that, as Q describes, kind of mimics a one click flare. To be honest I haven’t tried this scratch much in the form Q-Bert demonstrates it here, but will be fine tuning it for the next time I am on an alien scratch planet that don’t have mixers…

2tall presents Dudley & Georgia ‘Beautiful Mindz’ LP
2007-04-27 08:23:29
The latest release from the Eclectic Breaks record label is a new long player produced by 2tall (Jim Coles), featuring Dudley Perkins (aka Declaime) and Georgia Anne Muldrow on vocal duties. This is a unique UK/USA collaboration project that combines intelligent lyrics, free thinking, poetic verse and skilled studio productions, to result in an incredibly fresh, poignant and positive album. The album’s title ‘Beautiful Mindz’ is a message to the listeners that we are capable of much more than we think, and the project itself reflects that it’s not difficult to put together a unique album of music with people from other parts of the planet. From their initial acquaintance to the albums completion, the whole experience was natural and organic as all great partnerships are. Originally known for his accolades in the DJ championship world, where he took home the title of UK DMC Team Champions in 2003 with his crew the Trusicians, 2tall has been making a name for himself as a produc

DJ 2Tall Live at Skratch UK
2007-04-27 08:15:10
Check out this crazy dope video presented by needlework. It only really touches on the talents of one of the most innovative turntablists of today - DJ 2Tall. If you like this see the previous posts of Lamont on Ableton Live and Lamont funkin’ up 2Tall’s Peaceful Warrior Breaks.

Enter(tain) the meatmarket
2007-05-21 00:51:11
I’m not a huge fan of house music, but Sampleslaya - Enter the meat market from house legend Armand Van Helden is a turntablist / producer / DJs dream. It integrates catchy and funky beats produced amongst classic hip hop samples that can be used by DJ’s / producers spinning hip hop, house or straight up funky turntablism (an album worthy of owning doubles of! Juggle it up!!). Check it out on Amazon to listen to some of the tracks. It doesn’t seem so easy to find on vinyl but if you look hard enough you will find (I just stumbled across this in a Brooklyn record store after looking for years and almost giving up hope - actually I found it on gemm.com but it was a bit pricey. The copy I picked up was mint with a slightly damaged cover - for only US$5).

G-Smooth takes Denon DJ All Star title
2007-05-29 09:59:54
Australian turntablist DJ G-Smooth has collected yet another title to his name. G-Smooth took out the Australian title to go on and compete in the Asia Pacific finals in Bangkok, Thailand. Competing over 15-20 minutes each on two DNS3500 CD Players and a DNX1500S four channel mixer, the competition was tough but no match for the experienced tablist who wooed the judges and crowd with his impressive array of skills and knowledge of the equipment. Usually feeling at home on his trusty battle set up of Technics 1200 MK II’s and SH-EX 1200 Mixer, he is no stranger to all forms of DJ equipment and will make use of whatever is at hand. Here’s a small caption about his set taken from the Denon website: ” G-Smooth began with an impressive display of scratching and transforming pushing the limits of the DN-S3500 Active Platter and DN-X1500S Flex Fader. G-Smooth was clearly a battle DJ challenging all his opponents with some very good use of gangster movie samples and a conf

DJ Craze World DMC set 2000
2007-05-29 07:31:12
I wanted to post the video of Craze ’s 2000 set that took the title over Dexter (see last post), but unfortunately embedding is disabled so I can’t post it on this site. Check out his set on YouTube instead. You will find parts of this set very similar to the needle droppin’ video I posted recently. This 2000 DMC set was what won DJ Craze the title for the third year running and put him down in history books as one of the worlds top DJ’s. View DJ Craze’s World DMC 2000 set on YouTube.

Dexter World DMC set 2000
2007-05-27 20:26:26
Representing O-Z to the fullest. This has got to be, in my opinion, Australia’s best DMC entrant ever. It might (or might not) be fair to say that Dexter really should have won this title, with all respect to DJ Craze and his skills. Dexter had to accept a modest 2nd place in the World DMC championships in 2000. Yes, here is some consistency between this and the last post, as Dexter is supporting the almighty Shadow at the forum on June 7th ‘07. Should be a great show considering the skills of both of these awesome tablists.
