Review: Makeup: Shu Uemura Hard Formula eyebrow pencil
2007-06-12 21:18:53
My sister was using this eyebrow pencil before I did, and she used to tell me how quick and easy it was for her to get natural looking brows. So, I picked up one to try. Shu Uemura Hard Formula eyebrow pencil The Shu Uemura Hard Formula eyebrow pencil is an eyebrow pencil, just like others. However, what makes it rather unique is that if you were to draw it on your hand there isn’t much colour payoff. Most people have discounted it because of this, as they felt that it wouldn’t do anything for their brows. However, try drawing directly on your brows and you’ll notice that there is colour payoff after all. The colour grabs onto the hairs of your brows and adds colour and volume. As it doesn’t show up much on the skin, it looks more natural than if it were just drawn directly on the skin. Also because its not drawn on the skin, I find that stays on a long time, even until the end of the day, without budging much. The colours available are also quite good. The bro

Pole Dance your way to health
2007-06-12 04:20:16
Ladies!! You know how some men enjoy going to clubs with pole dancers? Have you wondered why? I have and when I saw a pole-dancing skit in action, I could see the attraction in it. The women look so lithe and sinous as they twist and twirl themselves around the pole. There’s something very sensuous about it. It is also great exercise and excellent for toning and firming up your tummy and legs. Have you ever seen a fat pole dancer? I read in the newspaper about someone offering lessons here but I’ve lost the contact number now. I don’t know if I am able to shed my inhibitions enough to twirl sensuously around a pole in a room full of mirrors with total strangers looking at you. It helps that these sort of classes are held in all-women groups, but even then… Pole-dancing has started catching on in Singapore and Beijing as a form of exercise. It helps tone you up, and also helps to keep you fit. Plus of course, there is the added benefit of being able to entertain your man in the

Review: Makeup: Shiseido Integrate lipgloss
2007-06-11 20:53:54
My friend loved this lipgloss by Shiseido Integrate so much that she sent me this as a gift. Integrate is another brand under the Shiseido umbrella and its presently only available in Japan. Some stores in Hong Kong or Taiwan may stock some of the items or colours, but in the main, this is a Japan only brand. Pity really, as this looks like an interesting brand. The Integrate Glamourous Rouge lipgloss comes in the shape of a pen with a clear body where you can see the colour of your gloss. However, the amount is very little. That bit of colour you see is about all you’ll get. Initially, I thought that it was similar to the Stila Lip Glazes, where there’s a brush as an applicator. However, when I opened up the cap, I was surprised to see that there was no brush at the end, but a silicone spatula. Very odd. You twist the bottom of the pen and the colour will ooze out the middle bit of the applicator. You then dab the colour on your lip and spread it out using the spatula.

I did not think much of the Clarks warehouse sale
2007-06-17 08:07:53
There. I’ve said it. I read about the Clarks warehouse clearance sale in the newspapers and online. I’d been to the one last year, which was held at the same place i.e. Corus Hotel in the KL city centre. Having a clearance sale in a hotel is always a good idea because its cool but parking is always hell. This year, they advised shoppers to park at Avenue K next door, because I suppose to hotel just could not accomodate the shoppers AND hotel guests who couldn’t have been very pleased to find so many people trooping around the hotel, clogging up the entrance and car parks. Last year, I picked up some deals, I felt. I got a pair of flats at about RM100 and a pair of black court shoes (serviceable if a tad small) at RM120. I’d seen similar pairs in the retail stores so I knew the prices. I hoped to pick up the same bargains this year. However, I found this year, that the prices were higher. I was not looking for casual sandals or shoes (they retailed at over RM100

Dad’s deserve the accolades too!
2007-06-17 08:05:52
Women are mothers too but today being Father’s Day, it’s a good time to show our appreciation for our Fathers and the other fathers out there. I couldn’t be with my Dad this Father’s Day, which is a pity. He stays in a different town and though I was supposed to go home this weekend, I decided not to as he was busy with some other meetings. He will be here next week though, so my siblings and I will take that time to take him out for a dinner as a sort of belated Father’s Day celebration. Thinking back, I don’t think I gave my Dad much trouble growing up. I was quite a goody two shoes as a kid. Maybe it was the strict upbringing we had. But now that we are older, my Dad is more like a friend and mentor than a scary figure of authority. So, when I see or hear of other people giving their parents hell in their teen years, it makes me rather sad. Our parents usually only want what’s best for us, and its not fair for us to rebel against what is perceived to be restrictive. As

Review: Makeup: Kanebo Revue liquid foundation
2007-06-17 03:38:10
I was introduced to this liquid foundation during a makeover at Kanebo. Revue is one of Kanebo’s department store brands like T’estimo and over here, can be found at the same counter i.e. the Kanebo counter. Revue specialises in base products i.e. for your face - primers, foundations, powders etc. This packaging is actually the older packaging for the Revue Natural Stay Liquid Foundation. The new packaging is a pink bottle that looks quite adorable. The texture is that of a watery liquid. You must shake it before applying so the colour is mixed up evenly. I like the liquid texture as it does not feel thick when you apply it on, like normal foundations. The texture however, is on the sheer side, so those who need more coverage might prefer something else. If you are like me (I don’t have perfect skin) and don’t like the feeling of a thick heavy foundation, you’ll like this one. It sinks into your skin nicely and you don’t even feel like you are weari

What mailbox defines your home?
2007-06-16 08:56:45
A drawback about staying in a condominium is that you are subject to having your mail put into commercial mailboxes. The ones that come in banks of stainless steel with a flap and your unit number on it. It looks so impersonal and well, commercial. I guess it cant be helped because of the number of people staying in a condominium block. Previously when I was staying in a house, we had our mailboxes in the gate pillar and so did everyone else in the area. There was just a slot outside for the postman to put our mail into and most times if it was a bulky envelope the lazy postman would not even bother to put it in the whole way resulting in our mail getting sopping wet if it rained. I was just wondering why we did not get those nice residential mailboxes as they do in the USA. You know those that are stand alone with a little flag on it that the postman raises if you have mail. I’ve wanted one of those ever since I saw it in the Charlie Brown comic book I used to have as a kid. Its too

Using fingers for eye makeup instead of brushes?
2007-06-15 23:40:54
Do you need to use brushes for applying your eye makeup? If you ask most people the answer would be “Yes, you do”. If you ask me, I’d say that makeup brushes for eyes are actually pretty much optional. Why I say so is because I prefer using my fingers to apply my eyeshadow. The only brush I use for my eyes is for applying my gel eyeliner. My fingers aren’t thin enough for that heh… I used to use brushes. However, I felt that using my fingers gave me better control on where I wanted my colour to go, and I found that my eye makeup looked better too. Maybe it is the warmth from the fingers plus the oils that help blend the shadow to make it look better. Also, I found that it was faster for me to just use my fingers and there is no danger of any brushes going missing or getting spoilt in the process of travelling. I usually use my third finger for applying the light base colour, the ring finger for applying the medium colour and my baby finger to apply the da

Crystal Wedding cake toppers
2007-06-15 22:40:28
I’m not getting married yet, as no Mr. Right is waiting in the wings. However, that does not stop me shopping around for wedding stuff. Call it fantasy – a girl can dream right? One online store I came across has caught my imagination froma couple of months back. I did a review of them on another site and I really like their ideas. One particular concept I like is that of a wedding cake topper. I  did not know what it was the first time I came across it. But essentially, you know how they always put a little mini bride and groom at the top of the cake? That’s the wedding cake topper because well, it tops the cake. The one on Advantagebridal.com is special for its made of crystals! They can do you designs in the shape of your initials intertwined or that of hearts. I like the one that has a trailing crystal vine of flowers coming down the side of the cake. I think it looks so elegant! It would only work on a smallish cake though. You can take the crystals home and display it afte

Kenneth Jay Lane Jewellery
2007-06-20 04:50:29
I was shopping around for a gift for a makeup mad friend and look what I found! A pendant on a necklace, in the shape of a red lipstick! Wouldn’t that be appropriate? Hehe… This design is by a designer called Kenneth Jay Lane and I saw it on Electricladyland.com which carries a line of Kenneth Jay Lane Jewelry. Some of his designs do look quite nice, if a little clunky. I suppose it would suit those who like bulkier jewellery. He seems to specialise in rings, pendants and bracelets but other than gold and silver, there isn’t much information on what are the jewellery items made of. Bit of a pity really. I’m sensitive to artificial gold, so I do like to know what I’m wearing on my skin. Then again, at the prices they are charging, it should be the real thing. The lipstick pendant for example costs a cool $88, but I’ve no idea what the size is so I can’t tell if its a cute size or a bulky size. Some information on that would be nice. Kenneth Ja

The new IT shoe - Christian Louboutin Fox Trot
2007-06-19 22:34:17
Can you imagine yourself walking in 4 3/4 inch heels? Well, if you are a slave to shoe fashion then better start practicing now for the latest IT shoe is none other than the Christian Louboutin Fox Trot. Picture courtesy of Life & Style. Please click to enlarge It looks quite innocuous actually. Its a basic peeptoe slingback design, but this shoe, named after the dance, has been spotted on the feet of many A-list celebrities. At a whopping $710 a pop, you can bet it’d better be worth it! But what’s making it so irresistable other than the price and glamour attached? Its leg lengthening qualities. You see, the higher the heels you wear, the more your feet and legs have to stretch to accomodate it. It throws your back out of whack though, so don’t make it a habit to wear very high heels for long periods of time. When you get older, you’ll suffer for it with back and knee pains. If the $710 price tag gets to you (as it does me) do check out some cheaper option

Review: Makeup: Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush
2007-06-19 21:24:27
I read a lot of good reviews about this mousse blush before it came into Malaysia and managed to get my hands on it to try. This is a mousse based blush, similar to that of Stila’s mousse blushes. It comes in a heavy glass pot with the colour of the cap representing the colour of the blush inside. Its too bulky and heavy to travel with and the contents can shift in transit. There are many colours available overseas, but when I checked at Guardian here, we have only about 4 colours available. This mousse blush is not to be confused with the Dream Matte Mousse foundation also by Maybelline. The texture and concept is the same, but this blush is not matt. The colours have some slight shimmer to them which is useful in a blush to add texture. When you open the pot, you’ll find the coloured mousse inside. It feels soft and springy to the touch - rather like that of a sponge cake. You tap your finger on the blush and then apply to your cheeks as you would a cream blush. As with

Clinique’s Mascara Exchange promotion
2007-06-19 09:24:25
I saw an ad in the newspapers that Clinique is running a promotion at their stores to promote their mascara. Bring any full size mascara to their counter and exchange it for a tube of Clinique mascara absolutely free! They say its a 6 week supply so I think it might be a sample tube. But hey, if your current mascara is running out, who is going to say no to a free 6 week supply? At least with a sample size, you know that you’ll have it fresh to the last drop! The promotion runs till this Friday 22 June, I believe so better get running to your nearest Clinique counter to pick up your free mascara!

Review: Makeup: Mavala Waterproof Mascara
2007-06-19 09:19:46
I’d heard some good things about Mavala’s mascara, so the next time I was going by a Sasa store, I popped in and picked one up in Black. It comes in a rather large bottle, with a slim long silver cap. For now I’ve only ever seen it at Sasa stores. What I liked first off about this mascara is its brush. Its a curved brush but I’m a novice with mascara, so I wasn’t quite sure how to use it. That’s not what I like about it. What I like is that the brush head is small and bristles on the brush are very small. I have sparse, short lashes, so this was great for me, as it could grab onto each lash to coat it with the mascara. Its supposed to be enriched with protein to help protect your lashes from breaking. I found that it did make my lashes look longer and enhanced my eyes. However, the bad news is that despite its claims of being waterproof, it smudged on me. I don’t quite understand why it smudged. I did not get my eyes wet at all the whole day,

Who’s the cute little baby then?
2007-06-18 22:21:05
A friend of mine just had a baby and she wanted to have a party for the little one when he was a month old. It’s a Chinese custom to celebrate the baby’s “full moon” which is when the little one is a month old. Its also to celebrate the end of the mother’s confinement period, when she is “confined” to the house. With her being confined to the house and all, I was to help her plan her party. So, what better way than to go online to look for baby shower decorations. I’m sneaky aren’t I? Anyway, I came across www.partypail.com which deals in themed party kits. Its a little boy I’m planning for, but as Chinese, red must be the theme for all happy occassions so I thought I could hit two birds with one stone and get the Red Wagon Baby Shower supplies theme. Doesn’t it look adorable? Its so bright and cheery, I’m sure baby and mommy will be pleased! And the grandparents too, who shall be looking out for the lucky red colour to dominate. Only one problem. They do

How to apply bronzer?
2007-06-24 05:30:45
Featured: Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer I’m not much of a bronzer girl myself. It might be due to the fact that as an Asian, having fair skin is a prized asset and I’m naturally fair. So, I don’t feel the need to tan or apply bronzer. However, there are times when having a slightly bronzed look works. This is especially on days when you want a touch of colour on your face. The thing about bronzer is that it doesn’t act like blush. Blushes add pinkish or reddish colors to your cheeks and can sometimes look a bit off or unnatural. Bronzers add colour to your face. I must admit that it helps give an illusion of a healthy glow on days when you don’t feel very healthy, or your skin looks slightly dull. Also, if you use bronzer, gold eyes really stand out and you can take it for a “natural look” without trying too hard. (more…)

I’ve got a new look
2007-06-23 11:16:58
Have you noticed anything different about this site? Yep, I’ve changed the theme of my site. If you are reading this in a reader, hop on over and take a look at my new theme. I spent a whole day hunting this theme down, and I really like it because it gives a web magazine feel to the whole site. I have been looking for something like this for ages! In the process of trawling the net for a free wordpress theme that would do the trick, I came across 352media, a Seattle web development company that do some nifty designs. If I were running a site for business I’d check them out. However, as I’m doing this for a hobby, I think I’ll stay with this theme for a while. So, you like?

New Maybelline Water Shine Elixir Lipstick

Here’s something new from the Maybelline stable - Water Shine Elixir Lipstick . I saw it in Watsons yesterday, retailing for about RM29.80. It might be a promotional price for this is a new item. I played around with the testers on display and got a pretty good idea of what the product is like. (more…)

Paris Hilton is an ordinary inmate?
2007-06-21 23:26:07
I saw this piece of news that said that socialite and heiress Paris Hilton is being treated like any ordinary inmate at the LA County Jail where she’s serving her time out for violating her drink driving probation. But last week or so, I’d read that she was placed in a cell by herself, with glass doors and 24 hour guard. I would have thought that kind of treatment would be more suited for a murderer than someone who had just violated probation for a drink driving offence. She had not even killed anyone… yet. But look at her sulky face in the video. Poor Paris certainly isn’t enjoying this “Simple Life” but think of how much money she can make from future book deals and talk shows!

Are you wanting a Chanel Turbulent Blush?
2007-06-21 21:31:03
Turbulent is a limited edition blush from Chanel ’s 2006 Summer Collection. Its a Joues Contrast blush which is the round ones not the quilted one. The colour is a very cool toned pink with lots of shimmer. The texture is hard as its a baked powder blush. This is opposed to pressed powder i.e. where they compress the powder. However, despite it feeling hard to the touch, its very pigmented. One swipe of your brush over the blush, and you’ll have a lovely pink flush with shimmer. This is my first Chanel Joues Contrast blush and I am sure its not going to be my last! The problem however, is that this Chanel blush colour is limited edition and already sold out in many counters. So, I rooted around my blush stash, and came up with a dupe in Make Up For Ever No. 85. Here are some comparison pictures of the 2 blushes. The Chanel blush is lighter pink in pan with more sparkles. The Make Up For Ever one is more berry toned and more pigmented. Here is a picture without flash of the

Are you flushed or do you have Rosacea?
2007-06-21 19:17:37
Have you found yourself having any one of these symptoms? Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. Small visible blood vessels on the face. Bumps or pimples on the face. Watery or irritated eyes. The most common of all are the first two. I’ve known people whose faces look perpetually flushed, whether it is hot or cold. In our hot and humid weather the redness is even more accentuated. In fact, my brother seems to have some of the symptoms but not to a very severe degree. If you have these symptoms, you might have Rosacea . Rosacea is a skin condition that doesn’t seem to be widely talked about here in Malaysia. I find it rather odd, as the number one trigger for rosacea is actually sun exposure, followed by stress and hot weather. Our country, being hot and humid, has 2 of the top three triggers of this disorder, yet I don’t hear much about it. Is it because it is not very common here, despite the sun and hot weather? Or is it that its as yet an undiagnosed con

Do you line your lower lash line?
2007-06-27 22:16:51
Lining the lower lash line is not a new makeup move. In fact, I’ve noticed many women lining both their upper and lower lash lines, even among the older ladies. Some even have them tattooed on - OUCH! I was reading some tips on how to make small eyes look larger, and it was recommended that you line your eyes all around. Apparently it gives the illusion of size. Nowadays, many women line their lower lash line with a softer colour, or with a softer or smudgier line as opposed to the harsh black lines you would have seen amongst the older ladies. Here is a picture to illustrate what I mean. This picture was taken from Kanebo T’estimo’s site. The Japanese tend to use lighter and more shimmery shades to line their lower lash line. In their instructions on the back of their eyeshadow palette packaging, they too show you how you can do it yourself. The eye colour on the lower lid is what I mean. In the picture on the left, which is for an evening look, the shadow is dark

Emu oil from Dremu
2007-06-26 09:32:42
I previously wrote about my experience with Vitamin E oil. It works a treat for me but I cannot use it very often because its so thick, I’m afraid of clogging my pores. My sister was given some Emu Oil from Dremu Skin Care Products and asked if I’d like to try it. Of course I said yes! I got a sample of Dremu oil, which is their most popular product. At first, I was calling it ‘Dre-mu’ until I realised it was Dr. Emu because its actually made from Emu oil! Yes, the large flightless bird of Australia yields an oil that is supposed to be pretty miraculous in erasing wrinkles. The thing is, I don’t have wrinkles, just some fine lines that are barely noticable. So, I read the Dremu website, and saw that the emu oil could also be used as a moisturiser, and it seems to work miracles for dry skin. The oil is rather thick so I did not want to risk putting it on my face. I’m just recovering from a bout of clogged pores. So, I tried it on my dry elbows and lips. Amazing! I put it on

Perfect Graduation Gifts
2007-07-04 20:51:31
Graduation is a subject close to my heart because someone very dear to me is graduating after 3 years of study. Considering he was studying as a matured student after retirement is an achievement in itself. So, I’m on the lookout for some nice graduation gifts. I looked around online and found some classic choices for gifts, even personalized graduation gifts. A popular choice is a paperweight. This gift assumes that the graduate will be working at a desk and will need a paperweight to hold all his papers in place. I think this gift will suit someone older with a potentially desk bound job, rather than a young and mobile executive who will likely have a floating desk and a laptop from which he can work from anywhere. The same goes with a gift of say, photo frames or pictures of the graduate’s alma mater. It will help of course if the graduate has fond memories of his college or university. You don’t want your gift stuck away in the attic or garage somewhere because the gradua

New haircut with bangs!
2007-07-04 20:28:36
I got a new haircut! I got bored with my old style which was long and layered and with a long fringe or long bangs. I was quite happy with my long bangs for a while. It made me feel like I looked more elegant. Don’t ask me why. However, I got bored, as I do with my hair after some time and told the hairdresser he could have his way with my hair so long as I looked different and younger. Yes, I’m feeling my age and made it clear I wanted to look younger. I ended up with a hairstyle quite similar to that worn by Jennifer Garner and Sandra Bullock as below. It wasn’t intentional. I did not even show him a picture! Anyway, I looked in the mirror after my haircut and saw he had cut my long fringe off. In its place I had a shorter fringe that skimmed my eyebrows. I haven’t had a short fringe in years and years! I was quite pleased though. I thought I looked younger. And when I met my brother for dinner, he confirmed it. He said I looked about 5 years younger. This,

Cook to Perfection
2007-07-04 20:26:09
I’ve been wanting to visit the Park Royal hotel Bossa Nova restaurant for their Brazilian meat buffet. I usually go to Carnaval in Damansara Jaya but have been wanting to try another for variety. This meat buffet is strictly for those who like meat and who are on a high protein diet – heh… The amount of meat served (on a never ending basis) can be staggering. I don’t know if they have one of those upscale rotisseries displaying their roasting meats – can any one tell me if they do? I like to view my meats roasting away. If anyone remembers this restaurant called Missisippi Slims, they used to have a huge roaster with huge hunks of meat roasting right in the open. I wonder why they closed down. Their food was pretty good. Anyway, I’ll let you know what I think of Bossa Nova when I go. Or if you have been, maybe you could spill the beans!

Introducing Nabi clothing
2007-07-04 09:23:01
Its Summer and that means that pretty dresses are the order of the day. I flipped through some magazines in the last two days and apparently, sun dresses are the in thing. Honestly, a pretty dress does wonders for the ego and it being summer and all, its license to bare a little skin. I loved the dresses found at Nabi. Nabi is a South Korean fashion label and Nabi actually means Me-Free in Korean. The designs are very original and creative and so feminine. I loved their dresses the most. They are so pretty! One of my favourite from the site is this Chiffon Kimono dress. I like the little ethnic design around the fringe of the skirt and the colours look amazing. The overlay is a sheer chiffon with the design printed on, and has classic kimono sleeves and a wide belted waist. It retails for $58 which seems pretty affordable. It only comes in one size though Korean size 44-55. According to the size chart that is an international XS-S and a USA size 0-4. Ouch! Very small sizing! Koreans mu

Benefit Cosmetics costs too much outside of the USA
2007-07-04 01:11:00
I was reading this article over on Viva Woman about the shocking prices of Benefit Cosmetics that launched recently in Singapore. I found myself nodding sadly in agreement at the shocking prices at our counters. Unfortunately, I must add that Benefit sold here in Kuala Lumpur (Parkson Grand KLCC, Metrojaya Midvalley Megamall) too carries an inflated price tag. The face blush/powders e.g. Dandelion and Georgia costs RM129 (US$37.92) at our counters but only US$26 in the USA and online.  The silky finish lipsticks my friend raves over costs RM68 (US$19.55) here and US$16 online. Is it any wonder we have to turn to online shopping? Benefit now offers free international shipping with purchases US$85 and above. So, grab a few friends and combine your orders to save on shipping and on the price per item. With the big differences in prices online and in store, the wait will be worth it, eh?

Kanebo Lunasol comes to Kuala Lumpur!
2007-07-04 00:54:34
I have been waiting for this brand to come to Malaysia for ages! Lunasol is a brand in the Kanebo stable, and used to be available only in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Finally, Lunasol by Kanebo is available in Kuala Lumpur . For now, its exclusively found at the Kanebo counter in Isetan at Lot 10. They just launched today, 4 July 2007 and they have a great opening offer - An eyeshadow palette with 4 colours and a lipstick for RM180. The eyeshadow palette usually retails for RM160 and the lipstick is usually RM80 so believe me when I tell you the opening special is a steal! (more…)
