Preview: Guerlain Emilio Pucci tie-up Summer collection
2007-04-03 02:52:17
I found this from this French website Mon Air du Temps. A tie up between fashion house Emilio Pucci and cosmetic house Guerlain . It looks like they have packaged Guerlain’s signature meteorites face powder into Pucci’s signature geometrical design together with a cute little Pucci pouch and pink brush. 4 lipglosses in turquoise, pink, bronze and clear are also part of the Pucci inspired look. I already have the Meteorites though not in such pretty packaging. But what I’m really wanting is that makeup pouch. I can so see it in my hand as an evening clutch. I’ve been wanting one for ages and this looks right up my alley! I hope we get this one here! You can read about it in English on this page.

Review: Makeup: Lancome Flextencils mascara
2007-04-05 09:30:51
I hardly wore mascara for a long time. The reason was because I tried a few but they all failed miserably on me. I’ve tried Maybelline XXL and Mavala Waterproof mascara, both of which smudged on me and gave me panda eyes. Then, a friend told me she loved Lancome Flextencils mascara. Seeing as I was at a sale picking it up for her, I thought I might as well get one for myself too and see if it fared any better. To my surprise, I like it! Below is a picture of my stick straight Asian (read: Chinese) lashes. Here is a mini collage of pictures of my lashes with the Lancome Flextencils mascara (waterproof) after a whole day on. I curl my lashes with a Shu Uemura curler before I apply mascara. With the other mascaras I have tried thus far, I found that even after curling, as the day wears on, my lashes will revert to their stick straight nature. However, with Lancome Flextencils, my lashes stay curled all day with no smudging I find it easy to apply as the brush head isn’t v

Review: Makeup: Guerlain Meteorites
2007-04-05 02:38:55
Tine asked me in a comment below what I thought about Meteorites. Well the short answer is that I love them. But do you need it? Well, it depends. I have the Guerlain Meteorites in Mythic or also known as the Original version. It has red, gold, purple, white and blue coloured balls in a tub. Its shimmery but not shiny. So, it adds a glow, but not shimmer. If what you are looking for is a highlighter or shimmer, then this is not for you. However, if you have been having dull skin or late nights and just want that extra pick-me-up added to your skin, then this might be the ticket. Its nothing that can be seen off the bat, but for me, it works. What I do is swirl a fluffy powder brush over the balls and then brush over my face after foundation/loose powder. It doesn’t add any discernible colour or shimmer on the skin. However, when the light hits your skin, i find that it adds a glow that tells people you had a full 8 hours of sleep, even if you’ve been up half the night! A

Essential Oils: Lavender oil
2007-04-04 16:58:25
I’d been having trouble sleeping lately. I’m not quite sure why, but I don’t seem to be getting a good night’s sleep as I should, which is affecting my mood in the day, and productivity at work. After 2 weeks of looking like a panda, with dark circles under my eyes, I was ready to throw in the towel. Then, I remembered something I used to do to help me sleep. I’d burn some lavender oil in an aromatherapy pot. The smell of lavender relaxes me, and in time, I’m just slumbering, as I ought. It works a treat! Lavender Oil is distilled from the lavender flower, and the musky smell is rather distinct. Some people call it the old lady smell as they associate it with little old ladies who use it liberally. It promotes relaxation, which is why you’ll see it as an ingredient in any massage oil or shower gel or anything at all that is supposed to relax your mind and body. Lavender oil can also be used to cure itches and insect bites and is one of the few

Who’s got fashion sense?
2007-04-06 12:01:27
There are times when you don’t want to be caught dead seen to be wearing the same clothes as others. This is especially so when you are in the public eye and likely to have comparisons made. Life & Style shows you how you should not wear your exotic leather bags, cocktail rings and oversized sunglasses, as demonstrated by Lindsay Lohan, Gwen Stephani and Mischa Barton. On the other hand, Katie Holmes, Cameron Diaz and Ashlee Simpson gets the same accessories right. Time to learn from the experts then!

Silver’s HOT!
2007-04-06 02:48:02
Metallic silver is all the rage in Hollywood at the moment reports Life & Style Weekly. That probably means we’ll be seeing more silver accessories - bags, shoes, jewellery, clothes in the stores soon. Its great for me, as I prefer Silver as a colour, to gold. Gold gives me the impression that its gaudy and in your face, whilst silver is more elegant. But, a lot of it depends on your skin tone as well. Some people I know don’t look good in silver, but smoulder in gold! Knowing how influenced we are by Hong Kong clothes trends however, I’m not sure if we’ll see this trend on our shores as soon, unless Hong Kong picks it up. All that said, I’m all over that drool-worthy silver bag in the picture above by Francesco Biasia ($428 ouch!)! Eh, and I do own that Bourjois silver eyeshadow! technorati tags: Fashion, Silver, Francesco Biasia, Bourjois

Pynocare - has anyone tried it?
2007-04-08 05:53:36
I had a reader, Cheryl, leave a comment below as follows:- Hey, good review you got there. Have you heard of Pynocare? It has the following claims :- “PYNOCARE with MSCC Complex Actisome is the first and only natural oral depigmentation solution. It effectively repairs and strengthens the skin from the inside out, visibly reducing the size and intensity of skin pigmentation. PYNOCARE contains powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is 50 times more potent than Vitamin C & E. PYNOCARE’s natural and safe formulation has also been clinically proven to reduce the size and intensity of pigmentation spots on the face. PYNOCARE treats skin pigmentation at its roots.” I don’t know if it’s as effective as Imedeen or not, is there any user of this product that can post some comment or reviews here? Thanks! I haven’t tried Pynocare simply because I did not believe that a pill could “depigment” any pigment on my skin. I have

Double-Cleanse your skin
2007-04-09 04:12:24
Double-cleaning is a concept which seems to be found mostly in Asian brands or asian skincare routines. I haven’t seen the other big “western” brands promoting this method of cleansing yet. What is double cleansing? Well essentially, its exactly what it says. You cleanse your skin twice. The first time, with cleansing oil and the second, with a gel or foaming cleanser. It was explained to me by Kanebo as thus: Step 1: Cleanse with cleansing oil to remove the oil, residual makeup and impurities from your skin. Rinse. Step 2: Cleanse your skin with a cleansing gel or foam cleanser. This double-cleansing is only to be done in the evening/night The reason given was because cleansing oils help remove the residual makeup and oils that accumulate on your skin and in your pores throughout the day. Using oil on your skin is an alien concept as it was to me when I first heard about it. However, its not as alien now that I use it. It removes makeup a treat, especially waterpr

These boots are made for walking
2007-04-10 12:01:58
I have a horrible hankering to buy me some knee high boots. Ok maybe not knee-high, but calf high. This whole obsession started last year when I was at the MO Outlet and they had branded calf-high boots for sale. They were odd sizes (either for the large footed or for cinderella size feet) but they were so cheap! I’d have forced myself into one if I could, and I did. Well, I didn’t have to force. I actually found one that fit me. It fit me at the foot and ankle, but sadly, did not fit me at the calf. Apparently, contrary to what I think, my calves were not large enough and there was a gap between the boot and my skin. So, on that one odd note, I reluctantly put the boots aside. I mean, we are talking only RM290 for branded leather knee high boots! Was I crazy for putting them back? YES!! The next question of course is, where on earth am I going to be wearing these calf/knee high boots in our hot Malaysian weather? My feet would melt in them. Or so I thought. However, latel

Chinese? Japanese? Korean?
2007-04-11 11:03:36
Yesterday I took the lift up to my office with 2 other cleaning ladies. They were quiet the whole trip until the doors opened. Then one of them turned to me and said (in Malay) “You look like a Japanese !” The other one immediately countered with: “No! You look like a Korean !” I was bemused because I am neither. I am a 3rd generation Malaysian of Chinese heritage. From what we could trace, the line has been pretty unbroken so it always amuses me to have people mistake me for a Japanese (in the past) or a Korean (presently). I think the perception is such because I’m quite fair, and I do a full face of makeup every day. Lately, I’ve learned to finally apply mascara that doesn’t make me look like a panda in 2 hours and which opens up my eyes a lot more giving me the impression of having larger eyes than  I really do. From what I see and have been told (having never been to Japan or Korea yet) the Korean and Japanese ladies place a lot of emphasis

Beauty in your kitchen: Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2007-04-13 03:46:42
I’d been talking to a friend recently. She’s got amazing smooth skin with tiny pores and seriously does not look like a mother of a young child. She looks like she is the child herself! What’s her secret? One of the things she uses for her skin is Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Extra Virgin Olive Oil? The sort found in kitchens? The kind used for cooking pasta? The oil I dip my crusty baguettes into? Yes, the very same oil. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) works on the same principle as that of cleansing oils. The only thing that can truly remove oil, so the experts say, is oil. So, using that principle, using oil to remove your makeup at the end of the day is a good thing as it cleans out your pores nicely. There are many options of oils available, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and olive oil, just to name a few. In fact, there is a brand called DHC which has olive oil (in a refined form) as its base ingredient and uses it for their cleansing oil. I’ve tried this. Its thi

Wedges! The shoe not the potato
2007-04-17 09:32:36
According to Life & Style of April 23, 2007, wedges are IN! I’ve always been in the market for a comfortable pair of wedges. But do you know how hard it is to find one that doesn’t make your feet look clumpy? I have small feet, so many times, wedges have a tendency to make them look unwieldly. I managed to score a pair a few months ago. Cork wedges for a casual look, with bronze metallic straps from Lewre. They felt comfortable when I tried them on, but after I bought them, I found they had a tendency to slip when I walked. So, I ran the risk of falling over, or twisting my ankles. I think I want some wedges like that in the picture. At least I know my feet wont’ slip in them, and the slimmer heel won’t make the shoe look so clumpy. I won’t get it in leopard print though. Its hard to pass of leopard print shoes at work!

Mineral makeup
2007-04-17 04:53:59
There is a lot of hype about mineral makeup in the beauty scene recently. However, this hype seems contained mostly in the western hemisphere, particularly in the USA. I haven’t seen local beauty magazines advocating mineral makeup, and we don’t get many brands of mineral makeup here too. Mineral makeup is makeup that contains mineral ingredients that exist in nature. These are primarily ingredients such as mica, titanium dioxide, zinc and iron oxides, and ultramarine pigments which can be blended to make every cosmetic from foundation to eyeshadow. Mineral Makeup is touted as being very natural and thus, good for your skin. Some more famous brands that carry mineral makeup are Bare Escentuals and Jane Iredale. Bare Escentuals is available at Shins at MidValley Megamall but the selection is small. Some of the more mainstream brands seem to be jumping on the mineral makeup bandwagon too by coming out with their own mineral makeup lines e.g. Laura Mercier. I’m not sure

Tea too pretty to drink
2007-04-16 06:41:44
I stumbled upon this unique site called Full Bloom Tea. They basically sell tea but presented in very unique and unusual ways. The dried tea comes to you in various presentations and when steeped the tea “blooms” into a presentation looking very much like a bouquet of flowers. Lovely if you steep it in a clear tea pot so you admire it while drinking the creations. An example is Let Love Bloom tea. It comes to you in the form of dried tea tied into the shape of a heart… aww…. When steeped, the tea “blooms” into this: Prior to blooming this tea bloom is in the shape of a heart, making it special to anyone you give it to. Once steeped, this tea bloom looks like a Bird of Paradise. Silver Needle Tea is the highest quality white tea and is harvested during the Spring before the buds open to preserve tenderness. Very delicate providing a pale yellow brew, with a fresh light flavor. Contains Silver Needle White Tea leaves and carnation. The benefits of the tea is presented as fol

Skinny jeans are OUT!
2007-04-19 06:04:14
So says Life & Style of April 30 2007. Look at the pictures. Penelope Cruz, Katie Holmes, Gwenyth Paltrow and Jessica Alba can’t go wrong no matter what they wear, but I can. And whilst skinny jeans suit the well… skinnier people with skinny legs, I’m not blessed with a pair. So, yes I’m happy that baggier jeans are back in. I wouldn’t call those jeans baggy though. I’d call them normal. They just are flared at the bottom, for which I’m glad because they have the illusion of streamlining your legs. Skinny jeans just emphasise how NOT skinny your legs really are I just hope they don’t go back to the early 90’s with those ultra-baggy jeans. Now, that isn’t going to be fun at all!

Promotions: Free shipping on Benefit Cosmetics
2007-04-18 12:09:12
Are you a fan of Benefit Cosmetics ? They haven’t been in Malaysia very long and can be found at Parkson Grand KLCC and Metrojaya MidValley amongst others. If you are familiar with this brand, you’d know its top sellers are BeneTint cheek tint, Dandelion and Georgia blushes and Boi-Ing concealer, just to name a few. Their packaging is cute and girly which appeal to many. You’d be interested to know that the prices in Malaysia are actually very much marked up. It may be something to do with the conversion rate or the cost involved in bringing in the brand. But, I found the prices too high. e.g. Dandelion blush costs RM129 (US$37.63) whereas it only costs US$26 in the USA. A Chanel blush costs RM133 and to me, the quality of Chanel is better. Anyway, if you know what you want or want to try out at the counter first then buy online, Benefit Cosmetics online is having a promotion for FREE SHIPPING for international customers with purchase of US$85 or more. And you&rsquo

Bags with fringes
2007-04-18 04:45:38
Life & Style had this style tip to offer, with Jennifer Lopez aka J. Lo taking the spotlight with her fringe bag. I love bags, and its nice knowing you own a fashion accessory that is endorsed by the stars. But looking at the fringe bags on offer, I can’t help but wonder if it might look dated after a bit. Its fussy and can dominate an outfit, which in my mind, a bag should never do. I mean, just look at it on J. Lo. I think a smaller or more streamlined bag would be looked better with her outfit, as she is quite bundled up. A large fringed bag just seems to add to the bulk - unflattering. I would like a little beaded fringed bag for the evening. But I think I’ll sit out this rage of fringe bags for a bit. As I’m not very tall, a large fringed bag will make me look like I’m carrying a furry animal on my shoulder!

Olive Oil update
2007-04-20 12:23:41
I’ve been on an olive oil cleansing regime for 1 week. In this time, I’ve realised that I’d been having a sudden increase in spots, some of which are of the hidden painful variety. These were in places I haven’t had spots for a while i.e my forehead and cheeks. I’ve only added the olive oil into my skincare regime so I’m going to go out on a limb and say its attributed to that. Maybe my combination skin cannot take the oil as the spots are in places which tend to get oily during the day. So, for now, I’m stopping this and going back to my regular cleansing with makeup remover and/or cleansing oils and foaming cleansers. I guess the olive oil was just too rich for me. It might be better for those with dry skin. For now, the olive oil goes back into the kitchen. Its great with crusty bread and balsamic vinegar by the way

Francesco Biasia bag that I want
2007-04-24 07:40:09
This is the beauty I’m eyeing. Its a Francesco Biasia bag, which is an Italian brand, a bag and accessories company based in Veneto, Italy. This brand isn’t like all the big Italian fashion brands we are used to seeing - Gucci, Ferragamo etc but having followed some of its designs online, I’m rather drawn to this brand. Why? Well, because I like the way it looks. Their bags have a fashionable yet classic look that won’t go out of style. Its not like the IT bags that you see trotted out every season. Their bags are made to last through trends. And I like that they look sturdy and useable, not like something thats more for show instead of substance. This design is from the Sunshine Collection. I’m not so taken in with this orange colour. However, I first saw a picture in the latest Isetan Kuala Lumpur newsletter. Its not yet up online but if you check in a few days, you’ll see a model holding a chocolate brown bag in the design above. I’m absolu

Review: Makeup: Kanebo T’estimo Frame Impact eyeshadow palette
2007-04-26 06:44:20
I am a huge fan of Kanebo T’estimo makeup line. Its a counter brand here in Malaysia, which means that the prices are quite high. But in Japan, its a drugstore brand. Go figure! Anyway, I love the eyeshadows as the texture is very soft and smooth and they are shimmery. This review is on T’estimo’s Spring collection eyeshadow palette - Frame Impact. There are 4 colours in this collection but I only got 04 as I did not want to be overdoing things, and I was looking for something neutral. Isn’t it pretty? This eyeshadow palette comes with a shimmery white/cream highlighter, a shimmery gold colour and a shimmery dark brown shade. The liner is cream in a dark brown colour. It comes with 2 double ended applicators that are of very good quality so I have no qualms about using them. However, I tend to use my fingers for most eyeshadow applications. This palette is a huge improvement for T’estimo, in my opinion. Their eyeshadows in this palette are super pigmented

Ikea Detolf glass display cabinet
2007-05-01 05:25:10
This is what I purchased over the weekend from Ikea. I’d been looking for a display cabinet for the longest while. Since last year in fact, when I first moved house. When we browsed the Ikea catalogue, my Mom immediately zeroed in on this cabinet and told me to get it. 2 trips to Ikea resulted in her asking me to get it. However, it was expensive then, at about RM259 or RM299 per cabinet or something along those lines. Yes, I understand its all glass and glass is expensive, but my budget did not permit me. Also, I was afraid that as my condo unit does have strong winds blowing through sometimes, it’d fall over and I’d have nothing but shattered glass on my hands. When I got the new Ikea Catalog for 2006-2007, I was pleasently surprised to see that the price had dropped to RM199 per cabinet! The prices will remain till 31 August 2007 so when I had a little bit of savings tucked away, I went out and finally decided to get this. Its also because I couldn’t find an

Have you washed your brushes today?
2007-04-30 02:01:02
If you use makeup brushes on a daily basis, this is something that’s easy to forget to do. I use my fingers for eye shadow, but I use a powder brush or kabuki brush for applying loose powder. I also use a blush brush for my blushes and an eyeliner brush for applying gel eyeliners. Once a week or once a fortnight, I’ll gather up all my brushes and give them a good wash. There are some brush cleaners in the market if you look under companies like MAC and Shu Uemura. However, I use Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Yep! The kind you use on your baby. Its formulated to be mild so babies can use it. And if its good enough for baby, its good enough for your brushes. Its also cheap. Wet your brushes. Then soap up your hands with the baby shampoo and gently swirl your brush in your palm. I usually twirl it in a circular motion or in an up and down motion. Do this until your brush head is saturated with the soap. Rinse by swirling in running water until water runs clear. Pat dry on a

Eye Majic - Instant eyeshadow
2007-05-04 05:55:40
In this age of instant noodles, instant coffee and instant gratification, now we have instant eyeshadow! Yes, you read it right. Eye Majic is a company from the Phillipines who has come up with an eyeshadow on applicator pads that you can immediately apply onto your lids and in 10 seconds, get the exact colour on, without the fuss. There are 12 colour combinations to choose from, and it is supposed to be long lasting for day or night. Some of the colours look rather daring like Shade 6 or 10. The colours come on an applicator pad that you apply to your eye. Sort of like using a cotton pad on your face. The colour will transfer from the pad onto your eyelid giving you instant eyeshadow. There is a page teaching you how to use this and also a video on the front page, if you click on the picture of the woman. So this is what it looks like on. Will I try this one? I’m sorry but no. I prefer playing around with the eyeshadows I have. If you live life in the fast lane then maybe look

High waisted denim? Oh no! But what lovely clutches
2007-05-04 03:45:38
Just when you thought it was safe to wear jeans again after the last trends of skinny jeans and super low waisted jeans, the latest Life & Style now tells us that the latest trend is for high waists. High waisted jeans? I thought we left that in the 80’s! I remember wearing those jeans then. It doesn’t flatter me, I’m sad to say. If you have a tummy, even a slight one, it shows on the front because the waist panel is so high. I found that the best jeans for me are those that fit around the hips. This is because I have a shorter body as compared to my legs so wearing jeans that are slightly lower waisted adds the illusion of length to my body. It also helps hide slight tummy bulges you have. I’m afraid I’ll have to sit this one out. Bah! It’d better not catch on! On a lighter note, look at these pretty satin bags/clutches! So bright and gorgeous especially since its Spring and all. You can tell I really need to get me a clutch and soon eh? heh

Here’s my Ikea Detolf glass cabinet
2007-05-03 05:22:34
I finally got my Ikea Detolf glass door cabinet all fixed up! Here’s what it looks like all done up, cleaned and with some decorative items in it. It is recommended that 2 people handle this due to the glass. Not only does it mean its fragile, its also very heavy! I found it hard to lift one panel by myself. Fixing it up is a breeze. Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter. Pay attention to the metal frame and where the side bits face - in or out. We made a mistake with cabinet #2 because of over confidence and ended up having to dismantle the whole thing. Actually, I’d personally recommend that 3 people handle this if possible. I had dad and bro with me which was useful. There will be times when you need one person holding the glass already fixed, one person holding in place the glass to be fixed and one more putting it in place at the bottom. Its not going to be so easy with only 2 people handling it. Also, looking at it, like all Ikea items, it looks st

Kate Moss for Topshop
2007-05-02 05:53:28
Supermodel Kate Moss has teamed up with UK high street fashion store Top Shop to launch a special collection inspired and designed by her - Kate Moss for TopShop. This follows in the footsteps of other celebrities - Madonna and Stella McCartney to name two. It promises lots of attention and sales for Topshop and probably marks a comeback of sorts for Kate Moss who we last heard had been dropped for many advertising campaigns due to substance abuse. This collection premiered yesterday May 1 2007 amid much hype in London. I took a browse of the stuff over on Topshop’s website. Now remember, Topshop in the UK is pretty much a high street brand, unlike in Malaysia where its considered semi-high end due to its outrageous pricing. In England, the prices are considered pretty normal high street which translated to Malaysia would mean Padini or Giordano. The only difference is that we won’t get Kate Moss for Padini, that’s for sure! These are a few things that caught my eye f

Getting rid of cracked heels
2007-05-05 16:29:07
Tine of Oh for the Love of Me! had this cheap and easy way to get rid of cracked heels. All it calls for is for a pumice stone, some body scrub, and a good moisturiser. All of these items can be picked up for cheap at a drugstore or your nearest Watsons or Guardian pharmacies. The key thing here is regular scrubbing and cleaning of our feet, which is something many of us neglect. How many of us have neglected our poor feet that carry us throughout the day? I’m one of those guilty ones. But with Tine’s tips, I will now make sure I pamper my feet when I shower for nothing feels nicer than a pair of soft clean feet. Read her entry on her blog here. And if you like what you’ve read, browse on over to her new beauty blog, Beautyholics Anonymous for more beauty tips and reviews.

Sunscreen: Sunsense update and L’oreal UV Perfect
2007-05-05 12:30:45
I am a strong believer in the use of sunscreen protection for face and body. For my face, I used to use L’oreal UV Perfect sunscreen with SPF50 protection. I then switched over to Sunsense by QV, an Australian brand. I loved it because it felt nice on and had mattifying properties, so it made my skin look matt nearly the whole day long. I reviewed this sunscreen and gave it a glowing review. I thought it was perfect - good sunscreen, mattifying, great price. UPDATE: After about 2 months using it, I found that I was having worse than normal breakouts on my face. I was breaking out in places I never used to break out before. Also, I found that my skin was very uneven as there appeared to be many clogged pores. Again, something I haven’t had for a long time. I pondered the reasons for this and looked at all the skincare I’d been using. Slowly, I cut out each of them from my routine. Yet the problem persisted. In the end, on a whim and a hunch, I decided to cut out the

Where to buy Eye Majic instant eyeshadow
2007-05-09 07:02:50
Wow after my last write up, I didn’t know Eye Majic has caught the imagination of so many people! I’m sure the owner is happy to know that there are women who love the convenience that his press on technique of 10 second eyeshadow application can bring. Jean Ann left me a comment asking me where to buy this Eye Majic eyeshadow. Well Jean, Brad K Bergman of Exoticbeauty.com.au has pointed me in the direction of Mirenesse. They stock the 12 colours of Eye Majic available at $15.95 for 7 pairs. Its also available from the New Zealand distributor of Eye Majic at www.eyemajic.com.nz according to Sharon. They ship internationally but require payment in New Zealand Dollars. Anywhere else?  Personally I’m still rather sceptical about it, so it would be nice if someone out there could try it and write a review about it. I’m always happy to test run it if someone will send me one pair LOL… ;)  I hope that helps you Jean Ann and all others out there wonderin
