Blackboard and Microsoft Vista
2007-03-12 22:04:24
- - - - - - - - If you are a student this is an important little bit of information. Blackboard is the name of a program that allows students, teachers, and colleges to communicate easily and safely together. In some cases, your grade will depend on weather or not you receive certain information through this program so it must be functional. The problem seems to be that the announcement feature does not work like it’s supposed to. This means that if are experiencing this problem, you will not be able to compose any kind of a message. This can be critical when a student tries to contact a teacher or when a teacher tries to broadcast an assignment to his/her students. To remedy this problem a variety of solutions have been published. This problem actually has multiple culprits so I will be going beyond Vista related solutions as well as solutions that are just precautionary measures. Disable the Microsoft WYSIWYG editor 1) Log into blackboard using your states portal 2) Select th

Why Can’t I Access Certain Websites With Vista?
2007-03-05 18:27:17
- - - - - - - - One of the visitors to this site left a comment the other day stating that he had problems visiting certain sites. I noticed this problem has occurred to others on my daily forum and research routines. Some users are unable to reach vital websites that are important to work and school. According to a variety of sources, the problem could be because the type of sites being accessed are secure (SSL - Secure Sockets Layer ) sites. For individuals with this access problem, I did a little research and found a few answers. Basically, from what I have read, this inability to access certain websites stems from the security measures that Vista comes with. All it takes is a little tweak of a few options and the problem should be solved. The following is one step by step solution to this problem: 1. Go to “tools” in the Internet explorer or firefox. (I don’t think it matters) 2. Go to the sub category “Internet options” (This is only in Internet exp

Laptop Shutting Down By Itself with Vista
2007-03-01 22:46:10
- - - - - - - - Lately, many people have been complaining that there computer has been shutting down on its own. Now I don’t know if it has to do with Vista but I thought it could be related since Vista takes up a large amount of memory. A laptop that overheats will shut itself off to prevent damage and injury of the user. Another culprit of this problem may also be with your hardware but that’s another story and requires a deeper analysis of your laptop. The Symptom’s of Your Computer If you notice that your laptop is shutting off on its own, you might have to think about the vents and cooling components of your computer. Also, if you use your computer on your lap, it is more likely to overheat because it is harder for vents to work against your legs and pants. On a hard surface, there is more ventilation. When your laptop does shut down is it very warm? This is a sign that overheating is the problem in your situation. Solving the Problem It is not 100% certain that overheatin

2007-03-01 05:44:18
- - - - - - - - As we all know, computer technology changes rapidly. For this reason, we all will run to the nearest shop to get a new computer when our machines become obsolete. No matter what financial status you have, you will not be exempt from taking part in this ritual. Sadly, if you’re on a tight budget, you have to consider the decision of buying a new computer because it will have a greater effect on you economically. Since Vista was released, many people are presently deciding to purchase a new computer because the operating system is out and they need to upgrade anyway. It’s time to look at vital information for anyone who is in this situation and wonders if Vista is a reason to make the upgrade today. It’s all around the news that Vista has its problems. For example, if you use certain wireless adapters you might be stuck with a computer that can’t be connected to the internet because a patch or update has not been released yet. Many “experts” warn against pu

What is Included in the Premium Editions of Microsoft Vista - Part 2
2007-02-25 22:51:44
- - - - - - - - This is part 2 in a two part series where I try to filter though the features only found on the premium editions of Windows Vista . If you have not read Part 1, click here to do so now. In the previous part, I spoke about some features that are featured in each version as well as a few that are only found in the home premium edition. Now I will continue by going over more features found in the premium home and business addition and then by ending with the features that are only in the business premium edition. 7. Scheduled backup feature One of the great new features allow you to prevent data loss. In the business edition, you will get more of these features but the home premium edition has a fine version of this. What you get is a program that allows you to choose when and where you want your files to be backed up. This will help you prevent loss when you do something, well, “dumb”. Simple scheduling wizard. In addition, there is another feature that goes

2007-02-23 00:04:44

You will also need to be able to compare the versions to see which one is best for you. I will help you by giving you all the versions, then I will go into the features that are only included in the premium versions. Then I will discuss all the features that are not included in the business version but not the home premium version because you might want them as well, which would force you to go for the Ultimate package. Since there are a lot of different features, this article has been broken up into two parts. Firstly, there are 4 different versions of Vista; Home Basic, Home Premium , Business, and, Ultimate. Each one of these are different prices since they have a variety of different features. They way they are above are in order from least features/priced, to most expensive.

Talk About Microsoft Vista
2007-02-21 18:23:36
- - - - - - - - How much experience do you have with Microsoft Vista ? I know it is new and Microsoft is still working out the kinks but there are a lot of people who need help with Vista. Perhaps they bought it too early and a little to eagerly. Maybe they thought their computer could handle it when it really couldn’t. In any case, people need your help. I want to openly invite everyone with a problem with Vista to ask a question after this post. While your at it, I ask you to feel free to read through some of the posts and see if you can answer it yourself. Then again, if your too lazy, you can ask without any research, I will just have to point you in the right direction. You are not the only person with the same problem. Most likely, you will be asking a question that others are wondering about as well. In any case, I want to try and get all the problems out in the open. If you don’t have a problem, but you have some kind of comment you want to make, feel free to do so.

Microsoft Vista Crack
2007-03-25 20:51:36
Despite the work Vista developers have placed into creating software that could not be pirated or cracker, people have still figured out how to do it. All over the net you can find such files for download with simple destruction with simple searches of Google or yahoo. Despite the juvenile nature of this Endeavour, it is still rather genius of the fellows who were responsible. The software contains NMware image file and a visual basic script that acts as a fake activation server. The cracker then also looks for a vista image file and can then successfully crack there own version of Vista. The reason crackers were able to do this was thanks to the mass activation key provided to business. A number of these keys slipped out into the general public allowing all who use the crack to successfully continue the process without a problem. Supposedly, there is a security feature for Microsoft that forces users to phone in the reactivation of the software every 180 days. This is not only bother

(Not) an update on SP1
2007-04-04 00:50:00
A HotFix.net blogger today posted a collection of individual Windows Vista hotfixes as a supposed Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) preview.  However, those of you who've been closely following discussions on Windows Vista will quickly notice that what is posted consists of some material already available on Windows Update and some hotfixes that we give out on a case-by-case basis, along with a lot of speculation about what may and may not be included in SP1. Looking at the site, it seems to me the blogger compiled a list of previous mentions of SP1 (purely conjectural, and already discussed in other blogs) stitched together with another list of "hotfixes" mentioned in various KB (Knowledge Base) articles (again, already posted on our web site).  You probably already know that we create and release hotfixes on a regular basis for very specific customer scenarios or for OEM-shipped machines, and that it's standard policy that all hotfixes are rolled into the next servi

Announcing the Windows Vista Resource Kit
2007-04-03 19:18:00
For some IT pros, the only thing they look forward to more than the new version of Windows is the new Windows Resource Kit-and the Windows Vista Resource Kit is available now. This official Microsoft reference provides more than 1,500 pages of in-depth technical guidance on deploying; securing, and managing Windows Vista . The primary authors of this book are Microsoft MVP's Mitch Tulloch, Tony Northrup, and Jerry Honeycutt-though hundreds of folks on the Windows Vista Team contributed to and reviewed it. (I even reviewed a page or two.) What's in the Windows Vista Resource Kit? Like most of the resource kits that have gone before, the Windows Vista Resource Kit includes a collection of tools, utilities, guidance, and information in one package. Parts of the kit will be available online, but the complete collection is available for $59.99 US. (That's the list price. You can get it for much less from book sellers.) Here are a few of the topics that are covered in the Windows Vista

Zune software and firmware 1.3 update
2007-03-31 19:56:00
Earlier this week, the Zune Team released an update to the Zune client software and Zune device firmware.  Some of the major improvements include fixing a skipping problem affecting content acquired from the Zune Marketplace, and FM tuner changes to prevent battery drain.  Also with this release come device and software reliability and performance improvements.   The relevant point here is that the release was delivered via Windows Update, which detects the new Zune software and advises you to install it (assuming you have chosen to get updates via Windows Update, which is advisable).            You'll soon see more MS applications putting to use the power of Windows Update for distributing software releases.

Our development team has put together a series of webcasts starting Monday 2nd April and continuing weekly through June.  These online-only Live Meetings are mainly for the developer crowd who's currently (or looking to be) building applications that run on mobile PCs.  Topics center on getting the most out of Windows Vista's mobility features, running the gamut from creating SideShow Gadgets to ink-enabling an application to creating applications that are network- and battery-aware. You can join any of these webcasts by just clicking on the title link no later than 15 minutes before the event begins on the day of the event.  If you happen to miss one, each webcast will be recorded and posted here as well, where you'll also find an archive of previously recorded sessions -- if you don't want to wait!

Purchasing additional Windows Vista licenses
2007-03-20 21:47:00
For customers who acquired a full or upgrade version of Windows Vista from retail or pre-installed, we've got a pretty sweet deal.  We're announcing the Windows Vista Additional License program, which provides the ability to install the same edition of Windows Vista on any other additional computers you may own.  The program allows customers to purchase up to 5 additional licenses for PCs they own at 10% off the suggested retail price. Windows Vista requires 1 license per device.  When attempting to install and activate the same licensed copy of Windows Vista on another PC, activation won't work.  When the activation fails, the user is directed to purchase additional licenses online or by phone.  Remember, not properly activating Windows Vista will lead to it running in reduced functionality mode, so this new program is a handy way to avoid that situation.  With it, customers can use their original Windows Vista media for installation and activate

Microsoft’s Windows Vista is the latest operating system in over five years after Windows XP. And according to some experts this new OS is not really worth making a hue and cry about. Besides a user-friendly interface, and powerful new safety and security features, the mobile computing enhancements make this OS easy to use allowing them to get more from their computers. Therefore, if you are a small business owner, then Windows Vista for Small Businesses is worth switching over to from your existing operating system. Digital Locker Assistant helps manage purchased Apps
2007-05-02 20:24:00
It occurred to me recently that managing my finances through my bank's online services was becoming a real pain. I decided to start using Microsoft Money 2007 to manage all my accounts. Instead of going down to my local Staples, I checked out Windows Marketplace to see whether they had the program - and they did. I had never used Windows Marketplace before and honestly, I don't know many people who have used it to purchase software. While I was beta testing Windows Vista, I discovered that Windows Vista had a built-in application called Digital Locker Assistant that allows you to manage purchased software from Windows Marketplace. I just had never tried it. Well, now the time was right to give Windows Vista's Digital Locker Assistant and Windows Marketplace a try. I went to Windows Marketplace and searched for Microsoft Money. The results displayed all the Microsoft Money packages I could buy. Green "lock" icons to the right of the products identified the ones I could use with Win

Me.dium add-in for IE7 connects kindred spirits
2007-05-01 19:45:00
At MIX07 this week I came across a cool new plug-in for IE7 called Me.dium that I thought you should know about.  It's currently a Beta release but works just fine for me on IE7.  While at first blush it might look like an instant messaging competitor, Me.dium's aim is different:  it's designed to create connections between people viewing the same web site and uses collaborative filtering to suggest similar sites that might be of interest to its users.  Their database collects URLs you've visited and chosen to share, your most recently visited web pages, your friends list and any other profile information you choose to share in order to run this data through their algorithm and generate a list of other sites relevant to one you're currently visiting, and consequently of potential interest to you.   The Me.dium folks, led by founder and inventor Robert Reich, had a session yesterday at this year's MIX where he introduced their creation to the audience and

Announcing the Windows Experience Blog
2007-04-27 19:07:00
You may have noticed a small change in the look of our blog today in the addition of "The Windows Experience" label to the header above the Windows Vista News section.  As you will surely surmise, today we're launching a new sister blog to compliment the Windows Vista Team blog; and, of course, this new blog will be called The Windows Experience.  The new blog will be managed by my colleague Brandon LeBlanc and will document his use of Windows Vista in various scenarios (think hi-def video, photography, virtualization, networking, etc), using video and photos to convey his experiences as much as possible.   The aim of the two blogs is to jointly illustrate the what, why and how of Windows Vista while continuing to generate conversations about the product and respond to the questions and concerns of you, the community.  So not to worry, the existing Team blog's reason for being and my role in it do change.   We're excited about this new development
