Coming to town

Montréal doesn't know the artist. He is European, very well known in France, participated at Versailles in the Live 8 concert event, and has a real talent for melancholy. I listened to him real often when I lived in Lyon, France. I love his texts, I love his sound. And he's coming to town. For the Francofolies de Montréal.


Le Marché Bonsecours

Le March é Bonsecours is a two-storey domed public market. It was named after the adjacent Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel. It opened in 1847.In the past, it served as concert hall and has been Montréal's city hall (from 1852 to 1878). Actually, the market houses cafés-terrasses, restaurants and boutiques.

Propaganda

I don't like to say that, but there would've been better ways to propose the army forces than using a word like fight. As Canadian Forces have difficulties recruiting, that kind of word might seem attractive to younger people. Am I the only one to find that despairing ?

Candidate in the pit

It's election time in the province of Québec, and some candidate get their publicity vandalized. The one in the pit is named Mario Dumont and has been trying for the last ten years to become a synonym of revival.Obviously, not everyone agree !

La Tour de la Bourse (translate Stock Exchange Tower) is Montréal's third-tallest building, 623 feet tall (47-story). Built in 1964, it's been the world's tallest reinforced concrete tower until 1968, with completion of Lake Point Tower in Chicago.It is located near Square Victoria, and is connected by the underground city to the subway station. The original project, conceived during the Expo'67, planned for three identical towers disposed in a triangle.On February 13, 1969 the terrorist Front de Libération du Québec(often called the FLQ) set off a powerful bomb in the building, seriously injuring twenty-seven people.

A taste of controversy

At the upper end of Place Jacques Cartier, near the Old Port of Montreal, stands what may be the most controversial monument in Montreal : The Nelson Column, installed in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson. An original statue, dating from 1808, was brought there by the English merchants of the city. The 8 feet statue is the world's first Nelson commemorative (Montreal was in fact faster than London, by 33 years). To many, it's like a bad reminder of British imperialism (the reason why it is controversial). The statue has been replaced in 1997 with a copy, probably to preserve it from the weather.

Morning nightmare / Summer front row seat

The Jacques Cartier Bridge, named after the famous French explorer, is connecting Montréal to it's south shore. Every morning, thousands of workers from the south shore use it. In the summer, La Ronde (attractions park) presents fireworks shows, which are attended by thousands of Montrealers... from the Cartier bridge, closed for the event every wednesdays and saturdays.

Located near Old Montréal, the "Palais de Justice" (law courts) is one of the biggest building around, noticable by it's dark colors.


Fullum Park

The Fullum Park is much smaller than La Fontaine Park, but less crowded for a peaceful walk by a sunny afternoon. The big tree in the picture always looks like it has long arms, twisted, going in every directions.


Lagging lights

Beside the lagging lights, it is the town hall. Montreal town hall is quite simple, but real fun to photograph as it gets different lights from season to season. Today, it is possible to observe downtown Montreal far away behind those crazy lights. What should I do ? Cross the street or wait... everything tells me to wait. Argh... how this picture is a metaphor of life right now. :0)

Take some snow in your hand, smell the cold temperature which is around -35C. It's all about to change this weekend ! Warm days ahead. The street you see in the picture is one of the well known "Plateau Mont-Royal", the district for artists and people that love to say they come from that district (if you see what I "mean"... :0)

Under the ground, under the church and the building, is an entire city : subway stations, restaurants, paths to hotels and shopping centers. The Cathedral is a famous entrance to that world.


Angel from Mont-Royal

The Mont-Royal , which is a pretty small mount, gave it's name to the city (and got it's name from Jacques Cartier). With all it's pedestrian paths, it represents as much for Montrealers as Central Park for New Yorkers (in fact, the two parks were arranged by the same guy, Frederick Law Olmsted !).Whatever the season, it's always beautiful to go and take a walk on the mountain, and then grab a little lunch down the hill, near the Angel (monument to Sir George-Étienne Cartier). That statue has been filmed in a lot of movies and TV series, as "La Vie, La Vie".

School's out

A snowstorm caused some effect yesterday in Montréal ! About two feet of snow everywhere, falling mixed with glaze by some moment, resulted in every school closed right before march free week. I remember we loved those storm when we were kids !

It's all about great beer

Here you get a glimpse of my favourite beer bar around : "Les Trois Brasseurs" (The Three Brewers). There are four of those brewries in the whole town, but that one on St-Denis street is clearly the most inviting. The happy hour ("le 5@7") is really interesting, with cheap price on artisanal beers. You got to stop here on every visit in Montréal !

Angus Shops

Near the railroad, between Saint-Joseph and Rachel streets, is located the Angus Park. Sector of industrial military production during the Second World War, the Angus Park was used for the construction of trains by the Canadian Pacific. Today, the Park has become a mainly residential sector, still under huge development. Recently, the shops used for production were transformed into a big supermarket (what a surprise). The Park still preserves the vestiges and the typical red brick from the "old shops" which were set up there before. The ground is known for still being contaminated.
