The Curtain Falls 2006-11-20 08:59:00
Oh, my head.
The thing I've been dreading most has happened: the allergies from hell have returned like clockwork. I went out last night and saw Casino Royale, and this seems to have aggravated my health problems. Missed the meeting on account of head full of fuzz.
Between the extremely stuffed head I've been fighting and the novel I've been trying to write, something has to give. It looks like that something going to be this blog.
This is something I've toyed with for a while. I'm not exactly saying anything original here outside of my stories (and even those are pretty cliched). I've always felt that once this place became more of a chore rather than fun, I would give it up. Without me even realizing this, I've long since passed that point. Worse still, I've become harder and angrier at the ones I love the most, which should never happen.
I'm going to take an extremely long break while I get myself together. I might check in from time to time with a new story, Read more:Curtain

Days of Future Past 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Guatemala: Casa Santo Domingo, originally uploaded by xeni.Still working hard on the NaNoWriMo. Expect nothing else today. This picture, though, sparked some old memories of Baja. The place that we lived in in Todos Santos had the prettiest flower trees all around the house, and they would make a mess whenever the wind blew. We were constantly sweeping up the walks around the place. There was an old laundry tub coated in stone outside the house, much like this one, under the palapa next to the house that sometimes would collect flowers and water in much the same pattern as Xeni's picture here.Flower petals floating in water. I think I'll add that image to the novel. Read more:Future

Hump Day Hunt - Week Thirty-Seven 1970-01-01 00:59:59 WindJoel and Ruth, on top of Sandia Peak, 1 January 2004. I wanted to take Joel and Ruth to Sandia Peak to see the sunrise. We picked the perfect time to travel to the top of the mountain; the weather at the peak was 20 degrees with winds in excess of 30 miles an hour, which made it cold enough for the camera to freeze up. Needless to say, we took shelter behind this building, as the coffee shop at the peak was closed for the day.technorati tags: photo, blog, meme, Foto Pherrets Read more:Thirty

Alive in the Dead World 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Kittens fight it out on the intraweb over who is the cutest.Working hard on the novel, approaching 10,000 words and some semblance of cohesion of plot. No Sympathy 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Want to know why I have no sympathy for the music industry?Stuff like this [emphasis mine]:Yesterday, Microsoft agreed to share revenue from Zune sales with record labels and artists. Forcing the issue was Universal Music Group, which at deadline is the only label named in the program. UMG refused to license its music to the Zune unless it could receive a percentage of each device sold, in addition to standard music licensing fees for downloads and subscriptions."These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it," UMG chairman/CEO Doug Morris says. "So it's time to get paid for it."Sure. Because once I've paid $300+ for a music player, I'm certainly not going to put any of the CDs that I've legitimately purchased or any of the DRM-encrusted music that I've purchased on the device in question. How silly of me to want to copy the music I've bought in case of sudden and unrecoverable loss, like, for instance, a hard drive crash or scratches in the CD renderi Read more:Sympathy

Terminal Case 1970-01-01 00:59:59 People disagree with each other every day; that's a given in today's society. However, someone invariably steps out of line, calling for someone to be killed. That is not considered to be civilized behavior by any stretch of the imagination. It is all the more barbaric when some asinine fool moves beyond the realm of words and acts upon his baser impulses.Keith Olbermann, the host of MSNBC's Countdown, has made it a habit of tweaking the nose of the Bush Administration and its assorted mouthpieces for years. Lately, he has also unleashed devastating commentaries on the issues surrounding this most corrupt of presidencies. Apparently, some mindless moron took grave exception with this action on his part, because Olbermann received white powder at his home through the mail.Anyone who has been paying attention for the last few years remembers the anthrax scare that occurred several years ago. Once can only imagine the fear and terror that Olbermann must have gone through when

Noisy Stuff 1970-01-01 00:59:59 A brief update on all things audio:I finally updated the podcast. It turns out I had a previous entry from October that I forgot about, so I moved it along. Click on the link to the left if you want to listen to me whine about stuff.I took down the Odeo Flash Player on the right. I haven't had time to keep it properly updated, and the player itself was slowing down the load time on the page something fierce, so off with it's head. Hungry? Not Anymore 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The graphic says it all.It gets worse:Some Americans Lack Food, but USDA Won't Call Them Hungry
The U.S. government has vowed that Americans will never be hungry again. But they may experience "very low food security."Every year, the Agriculture Department issues a report that measures Americans' access to food, and it has consistently used the word "hunger" to describe those who can least afford to put food on the table. But not this year.Mark Nord, the lead author of the report, said "hungry" is "not a scientifically accurate term for the specific phenomenon being measured in the food security survey." Nord, a USDA sociologist, said, "We don't have a measure of that condition."The USDA said that 12 percent of Americans -- 35 million people -- could not put food on the table at least part of last year. Eleven million of them reported going hungry at times. Beginning this year, the USDA has determined "very low food security" to be a more scientifically palatable description for that

Previous Lives 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I'm so bad when I'm slacking off. This morning started out badly to begin with sometime around last night. Last night, Pop was taking photos for a small business opportunity. He wanted to e-mail the photos to his contact, but our computer's hard drive decided on Wednesday to fail (once again). Stephanie graciously offered up her own computer, and I set to work cleaning up the photos.Problem One: Pop takes really crap photos. No worries; I'll just fire up Paint.Net and clean them up in no time.Problem Two: Stephanie has never installed any of the Windows updates for the last two years. Paint.Net needs the NET 2.0 Framework. (Don't sweat it if you don't know what all of that means. Stephanie didn't, either.)So I spent the better part of my relaxation time installed SP2 and every other update my sister hadn't gotten around to (much of which fight was hampered by Limewire, of all things). Finally, by 11:00, the computer was updated and the photos were retouched and e-mailed.Therefo Read more:Lives
Dogs of War 1970-01-01 00:59:59 So now that it's going to be legal to electrocute, waterboard, and otherwise put people who are deemed "terror suspects" through hell in the best traditions of dictatorships everywhere, and we all know how arbitrary the government can be when applying that appellation on people who may not actually be terrorists, it only makes sense to remove other countries who may want a piece of the "crazy fundamentalist" pie:As reports circulate of a sharp debate within the White House over possible US military action against Iran and its nuclear enrichment facilities, The Nation has learned that the Bush Administration and the Pentagon have moved up the deployment of a major "strike group" of ships, including the nuclear aircraft carrier Eisenhower as well as a cruiser, destroyer, frigate, submarine escort and supply ship, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran's western coast. This information follows a report in the current issue of Time magazine, both online and in print, that a group

Dave 1970-01-01 00:59:59 My friend died today. One of the hardest things about moving around so much isn't the places or foods you leave behind. Those can be easily duplicated or visited over and over again later. The hardest thing are the friends you make. Not that making friends is bad; far from it, people are the only things that make places, especially rotten places, livable. But when you move around a lot, you lose the one thing that makes life a little more tolerable. I don't make friends easily. It's easier for me to just sort of blend into the wall and watch others, so the few real friends should be precious to me.The fact is, I'm a really rotten friend once I'm gone. You'd think that with all of the wonderful technological advances we've made that I would have a world of friends at my fingertips, but I don't. Once I leave an area, I tend to vanish from that person's life. Maybe I'll send a letter or drop a call, but for the most part, I am gone, never to be seen again. Until I return,
