My name's not Osama.City of BostonBoston, MassachussettsDear Boston,Can we talk for a moment?See, it's pretty much common knowledge that you have a reputation for being a pugnacious sort of city; tough is commonly thought of as being your middle name. At least, this is what citizens of your fair burg love telling anyone who would listen. You're Beantown - patriots fighting the British Empire and Paul Revere, Tom Brady and Larry Bird and all that stuff. Civic pride is an art form to you.The thing is, the whole mess with the Lite-Brite signs of Lunar cartoon characters showed a whole 'nother side to all: you guys sure do scare easily. You didn't see any of the other nine cities that this campaign appeared in losing it, did you? (Thanks, Sadly, No!)Seriously, Osama bin Laden has got to be laughing his ass off, watching your police and bomb squads run around town, desperately trying to defuse someone's guerrilla marketing campaign, thus bringing your entire city to a grinding halt. Habit-FormingWhat are your reading habits? Do you tend to read at specific times during the day, or does it vary from day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute? I read anytime, anywhere, with just about whatever is lying around. OK, that really didn't sound very good when I read it back, but it's true. My favorite time to read is at night, right before bed, usually for about an hour.technorati tags: books, Booking Through Thursday , reading, meme

Part of ExxonMobil's new executive dress codeToday, the study on global warming from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change hits the streets.Global warming is "very likely" to have been caused by human activity, the leading international body studying climate change said in a report today. The likelihood that the phenomenon has been created by the burning of fossil fuels and other actions is greater than 90%, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in its fourth report. In 2001, the body - which brings together 2,500 scientists from more than 30 countries - said global warming was only "likely", or 66% probable, to have been caused by humans.Global warming is "unequivocal" fact and is likely to continue for centuries, the study found.Environmental groups said the IPCC report showed urgent action was needed."If the last IPCC report was a wakeup call, this one is a screaming siren," Stephanie Tunmore, of Greenpeace, said. The 21-page summary (pdf) of the findi

Fear and Advertising
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Seeing some of the reactions around the blogosphere, I'm a little surprised by some of the reactions to the Mooninite hubbub. There are, as far as I can see, three main reactions: 1. "Those long-haired stoners nearly got people hurt. Those stupid signs could've been explosives!" Yes, I suppose a stunt like this could have caused massive property damage and led to some deaths - if it was planned by the Joker. Seriously, who goes through the time and expense of planting explosive devices all over a major city and then lights them up like a Christmas tree so that everyone can see them? Hell, you wouldn't find a cockamamie scheme like that in a bad comic book, and yet the elected officials of a major metropolitan area actually believed that a bunch of lit-up signs with wires sticking out of them were part of some terrorist's scheme. Problem is, I understand this reaction. It may seem like a dumb way to react, but it is understandable, given the fear tha

For Love of Money

(Sorry if that last post seemed short, but typing on a Blackberry is difficult with large hands.)Continuing on previous thoughts:2. "It's all Turner's fault. In fact, this was all caused by commercialism run amok."A brief digression into the past:I used to work in advertising, once upon a time. (I've probably mentioned it before, but in case you're new here, I won't make you go looking through the archives.) I used to work for a small weekly newspaper down on the border in Texas. One of the jobs I had was to create ads for customers. It was probably the most fulfilling secular employment I've ever had; every day, my job was to create weekly masterpieces that incited droves of people to spend their hard-earned money on stuff that they neither wanted nor needed. It didn't pay very well, but it was probably the most fulfilling job I have ever had. I got to flex my imagination a little every week, and I was filled with pride every week when I saw a particularly good job sh

Ah, hot tea. What did civilized man do before tea?Sorry, that sounds like an ad. I'm very sleepy right now, so this may ramble a bit. Continuing:3. "HAHAHAHAHA!!!! That is pretty funny!"Arthur C. Clarke story once wrote a story entitled "Publicity Campaign". It's one of my favorite stories of his, primarily in its use of advertising as the key to the story. In the story, a movie studio had an enormous advertising campaign to promote their new blockbuster movie, which featured a standard alien-invasion plot (rather common in the Fifties; heck, it's fairly common today) geared to scare the heck out of the audience. Unfortunately, this movie and the resultant marketing campaign happened at the same time that a benign alien race decided to make contact with the human race. The rather predictable result is funny in the sense of "Of course it ended that way. How else would it have ended?" because the political climate that swept the Fifties at that time is very simi

OK, I offended myself with my ham-fisted attempt at commentary. I'd better explain. (Just for the record, no one complained; I just re-read it out loud and considered it in the worst-possible light. Yikes. Time to clarify.)Joss Whedon, IMHO, is one of the greatest directors of our time. I say this with no sarcasm. This is not to say that he is an Altman or a Scorcese or a Welles ... but no, he is like them in one major respect - the man creates real people on the screen. Too many time I've watched a movie and come out of it shaking my head and saying, "People don't talk like that in real life."Joss' characters never did this. They were flawed, human characters, but they seemed more real than most people I know. The heroes were genuinely likable, and the villains, though vile and inhuman at time, never descended into camp. They were people first, and this showed in the man's stories. When I heard that Joss was doing the treatment and directing the Amazon Princess, I had hi

Training Day

I sense an imminent train wreck for some reason.RAMALLAH, West Bank - The United States is planning to spend millions of dollars to train Palestinian security forces as part of a renewed effort to strengthen Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.American, Palestinian and Israeli officials said Monday that they're fine-tuning a proposal that would send thousands of Palestinian forces loyal to Abbas to neighboring Jordan and Egypt for advanced training. The initiative is intended to provide Abbas with critical support in his political and military confrontation with the well-armed Hamas hard-liners who've controlled the Palestinian Authority since elections early last year. Why do I have a sense of foreboding upon reading this?Oh, yeah, now I remember.BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's Interior Ministry said Tuesday that it has charged 57 members of the Iraqi police, including a general, in the alleged torture of hundreds of detainees at a prison in eastern Baghdad.Torture is considered wi

Judge to RIAA: Get Bent
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Every once in a while, the bad guys take one square in the kisser.Good news today from the great state of Oklahoma. Debbie Foster, a single mom who was improperly sued by the RIAA back in 2004 for file sharing, has won back her attorneys' fees. The decision today is one of the first in the country to award attorneys fees to a defendant in an RIAA case over music sharing on the Internet.Last year, Judge Lee R. West dismissed the case against her with prejudice after it became clear that Ms. Foster was simply the Internet access account holder in her home and had no knowledge or experience with file sharing software. EFF, Public Citizen, the ACLU, and the American Association of Law Libraries filed an amicus brief in the case, supporting Ms. Foster's motion for fees.Chew it, RIAA.technorati tags: RIAA, lawsuit, DMCA, EFF
