Putting hyacinth bulbs in strict rows is not really my beloved arrangement of hyacinths. Yet if you are walking nearby a hyacinth garden as the one in the picture above, you will get overwhelmed by the hyacinth fragrance. Whether it is a garden hyacinth or a hyacinth bought in a pot for indoors, I just love the hyacinth fragrance! This perfume makes the hyacinth one of my favorite spring bulb flowers.
Because of the hyacinth’s pervasive perfume, the bulbs used to be very expensive. The bulbs are now grown in Holland and Great Britain and you can buy the hyacinth flower worldwide (they even sell hyacinths in Malaysia around Chinese New Year of which
the 15th night just passed), I really suggest you get this flower plant and enjoy the hyacinth perfume as well (again we should have ‘smellyvision‘ on the Internet…)

Muscari are bulbs producing spikes of blue flowers resembling little blue grapes. That’s where the name "grape hyacinth" comes from. Yet muscari blooms much earlier than normal hyacinths, muscari flowers are much smaller and these flowers don’t have any perfume.

Tulip Tree Picture 2007-01-19 18:58:26 Tulip Tree: or Liriodendron is actually a magnolia (Magnoliaceae family : Liriodendron tulipifera). The tulip tree can grow in the wild up to about 200 feet (60m) and is an excellent lumber tree. Early settlers used the tulip tree for making dugout canoes.

The tulip tree is not a tulip bulb: bulbs are there to storage nutritions so the plant can stand a cold period. The next season thanks to the available nutritions in the bulb, these bulbs will be the first to grow leaves and flowers, much faster than plants without a nutrition reservoir.
A tulip tree is a tree: it keeps on growing to become taller and taller each year, with or without having a seasonal rest.
The leaves of the tulip tree are kind of "cut off" at the top, which makes the tulip tree easy to distinguish from others.

From top to bottom:
crocus bulbs,
daffodil bulbs and
tulip bulbs (make sure to choose a late flowering tulip bulb).
If you have a small garden or a lot of flowers bulbs, you can plant the tulip bulbs above or below other flowers bulbs. You can aim for a chronological flowering like in the example on the left: first the crocus will flower, then the daffodils and then the tulips. Which means your spot will be flowering for weeks in a row with bulbs.
Of course you can use your own imagination: only the bulbs are the limit… Below a flowers bulb picture so you have an idea how which flower bulb will give which flowers during which period of spring.

Planting Tulip Bulb 2006-11-18 07:27:42 It’s November: the ideal period for planting your tulip bulb. A tulip bulb needs a cold period in order to make flowers:
temperatures between 40 to 50 degrees F (5 to 10 degrees C)
for 3 to 3 and a half months
When to plant tulip bulb ?
As soon as the temperatures wont go above 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). This means November or December if you live in the northern hemisphere, yet "consult" your local climate.
How to plant tulip bulb ?
Planting a bulb goes by the following rule of thumb:
1 to 3 times as deep as the size of the flower bulb.
For a tulip bulb, I like to plant them in a hole, 2 times as deep as the tulip bulb. This means: the hole you dig should be able to fit 2 tulip bulbs placed on each other.
How far to plant tulip bulb?
Again no need to learn by heart, just use your common sense: the width of your plant is how far you will minimally plant 2 plants away, so they have just enough space to live.

How to landscape bulbs? Very easy: since you know in advance how the flowers of the bulbs will look like, bulbs are easy to landscape. You can get idea’s from Keukenhof Gardens, yet the simplest idea to landscape bulbs is to integrate them in the flow and lines already available in your garden.
Like in the picture above taken from the "Open Gardens" from Belgium
(see Hyacinth Garden): the yellow daffodils follow the flow of the garden path. Simple. Add to that the perfume of the pink hyacinths planted together in a big oval cluster and you have a winner.

Another picture taken from the "Open Gardens" from Belgium (see Hyacinth Garden). The only gardener from this flower garden is 77 years old, and what is the secret of maintaining this flower garden?
280.000 flowers bulbs planted each year by hand and removed later in the year to be stored on his attic. Having flowers can be backbreaking work, so you better enjoy it when you dream to have your own big flower gardens.
Any guess how many spring flower bulbs there must be planted then in the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens…?

Spring flowers exact name?
Who knows the name of these spring flowers? The picture was taken in one of these beautiful hobby-gardeners spring flowers gardens in Belgium early last month (see Hyacinth Garden).
The leaves look a bit like daffodils, yet I am not familiar with this type of daffodil (that is: would it be a daffodil in the first place?).
