Keukenhof
2007-03-23 08:48:49
In the Netherlands they say keuken for kitchen and hof for garden, so Keukenhof is "no more" than a kitchen garden… or is it? Keukenhof tulips Keukenhof is most known as the "Keukenhof Tulip Garden". Yet don’t be fooled: Keukenhof is much more than just tulips around a typical Dutch windmill… Keukenhof Gardens Only the red flowers are tulips, in front and more at the back are daffodils… : spring bulbs form the core of Keukenhof. What’s in a name: all these spring bulbs bloom in spring. Therefore Keukenhof is only open during spring. The other months are intended for maintenance activities at the gardens, and obviously for planting the bulbs. Keukenhof Opening 2007 In 2007 Keukenhof is open from 22 March to 20 May. Why do bulbs bloom only in spring? Flower bulbs are a product of nature. Bulbs contain "extra food" available for the plant. Therefore bulbs have an advantage on all other plants and will be the first to grow a

Hyacinth Garden, Spring "Open Gardens"Belgium Putting hyacinth bulbs in strict rows is not really my beloved arrangement of hyacinths. Yet if you are walking nearby a hyacinth garden as the one in the picture above, you will get overwhelmed by the hyacinth fragrance. I just love the hyacinth perfume filling the air just a few days before spring. You can visit hyacinth gardens and other spring bulb gardens in Belgium for free, just ask for "Open Gardens" (Open Tuinen in Dutch, and it beats Keukenhof Tulip Garden: the amazing tulip paradise garden in The Netherlands) Technorati Tags: Hyacinth garden | Hyacinth | Garden | Travel | Pictures | Picture | Photos | Flowers | Tulips | Spring | Travel | Belgium | The Netherlands | Keukenhof

Blue Hyacinth Blue Hyacinth flower for sale Normally you can also see the bulb of the hyacinth in the pot it is sold, which I find more attractive, yet beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Hyacinth perfume Whether it is a garden hyacinth or a hyacinth bought in a pot for indoors, I just love the hyacinth fragrance! This perfume makes the hyacinth one of my favorite spring bulb flowers. Because of the hyacinth’s pervasive perfume, the bulbs used to be very expensive. The bulbs are now grown in Holland and Great Britain and you can buy the hyacinth flower worldwide (they even sell hyacinths in Malaysia around Chinese New Year of which the 15th night just passed), I really suggest you get this flower plant and enjoy the hyacinth perfume as well (again we should have ‘smellyvision‘ on the Internet…) Garden hyacinth Although hyacinths are available from November till April, the hyacinths in the gardens in Belgium and the Netherlands are only now emerging. Grape hyacinth
2007-02-24 02:47:08
I didn’t see them at the florist yet, but in our garden there is against all odds already 1 cute little blue flower: the grape hyacinth (which should start blooming in full force after the crocus… nature has its own ways: flowers don’t read our Spring flower bulb chronology…) Muscari armeniacum Muscari are bulbs producing spikes of blue flowers resembling little blue grapes. That’s where the name "grape hyacinth" comes from. Yet muscari blooms much earlier than normal hyacinths, muscari flowers are much smaller and these flowers don’t have any perfume. Growing muscari is very easy. Grape hyacinths are ideal to grow in pots and they are lasting: each year you have another pot of little blue flowers. Tulip Tree Picture

Tulip Tree: or Liriodendron is actually a magnolia (Magnoliaceae family : Liriodendron tulipifera). The tulip tree can grow in the wild up to about 200 feet (60m) and is an excellent lumber tree. Early settlers used the tulip tree for making dugout canoes. A picture of the tulip tree The tulip tree is not a tulip bulb: bulbs are there to storage nutritions so the plant can stand a cold period. The next season thanks to the available nutritions in the bulb, these bulbs will be the first to grow leaves and flowers, much faster than plants without a nutrition reservoir. A tulip tree is a tree: it keeps on growing to become taller and taller each year, with or without having a seasonal rest. The leaves of the tulip tree are kind of "cut off" at the top, which makes the tulip tree easy to distinguish from others. Picture s of the tulip tree flower Depending on how you look at it, you could get the impression that the flower of the tulip tree looks very similar to a normal tulip

How to plant tulip bulbs? Read how to plant a tulip bulb at: planting tulip bulb Read how to plant a tulip bulbs in clusters at: planting tulip bulbs Planting tulip bulbs below flower bulbs From top to bottom: crocus bulbs, daffodil bulbs and tulip bulbs (make sure to choose a late flowering tulip bulb). If you have a small garden or a lot of flowers bulbs, you can plant the tulip bulbs above or below other flowers bulbs. You can aim for a chronological flowering like in the example on the left: first the crocus will flower, then the daffodils and then the tulips. Which means your spot will be flowering for weeks in a row with bulbs. Of course you can use your own imagination: only the bulbs are the limit… Below a flowers bulb picture so you have an idea how which flower bulb will give which flowers during which period of spring.   View the above flower bulbs picture at large at: Spring flower bulb Technorati Tags: Pictures of tulips | Planting tulip bulbs | Whe

How to plant tulip bulbs? Read how to plant a tulip bulb at: planting tulip bulb Planting tulip bulbs in clusters I love to plant tulip bulbs in clusters of odd numbers: 1 flower bulb in the middle surrounded by other flower bulbs. Especially 7, 9 or 11 tulip bulbs give a nice impression to the eye when seen from far. More about planting tulip bulbs together in out next post. Planting Tulip Bulb
2006-11-18 07:27:42
It’s November: the ideal period for planting your tulip bulb. A tulip bulb needs a cold period in order to make flowers: temperatures between 40 to 50 degrees F (5 to 10 degrees C) for 3 to 3 and a half months When to plant tulip bulb ? As soon as the temperatures wont go above 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). This means November or December if you live in the northern hemisphere, yet "consult" your local climate. How to plant tulip bulb ? Planting a bulb goes by the following rule of thumb: 1 to 3 times as deep as the size of the flower bulb. For a tulip bulb, I like to plant them in a hole, 2 times as deep as the tulip bulb. This means: the hole you dig should be able to fit 2 tulip bulbs placed on each other. How far to plant tulip bulb? Again no need to learn by heart, just use your common sense: the width of your plant is how far you will minimally plant 2 plants away, so they have just enough space to live. Planting them closer will make your tulip bu

I took this picture of tulips because each pink tulip seems to be wrapped in its’ green leaves like a genuine tulip bouquet. Tulip bouquet : one tulip at a time… Where the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens in the Netherlands stand out for the abundance of spring flower bulbs, these individual tulips stand out for their poetic beauty… Ok, I am not a real poet, but I am a tremendous lover of flowers! Landscape bulbs
2007-04-02 05:05:31
Landscape bulbs alongside your garden path Flowers and bulbs How to landscape bulbs? Very easy: since you know in advance how the flowers of the bulbs will look like, bulbs are easy to landscape. You can get idea’s from Keukenhof Gardens, yet the simplest idea to landscape bulbs is to integrate them in the flow and lines already available in your garden. Like in the picture above taken from the "Open Gardens" from Belgium (see Hyacinth Garden): the yellow daffodils follow the flow of the garden path. Simple. Add to that the perfume of the pink hyacinths planted together in a big oval cluster and you have a winner. Flower gardens: 280.000 spring flower bulbs, 1 gardener Another picture taken from the "Open Gardens" from Belgium (see Hyacinth Garden). The only gardener from this flower garden is 77 years old, and what is the secret of maintaining this flower garden? 280.000 flowers bulbs planted each year by hand and removed later in the year to be stored on his attic. Having flowers can be backbreaking work, so you better enjoy it when you dream to have your own big flower gardens. Any guess how many spring flower bulbs there must be planted then in the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens…? The picture was taken in one of these beautiful hobby-gardeners spring flowers gardens in Belgium early last month (see Hyacinth Garden).
