Barnack, Bresson and the Golden Ratio
2007-03-22 23:59:08
In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers form a sequence that after two starting values, each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 and so on. A tiling with squares whose sides are successive Fibonacci numbers in length gives us the pattern shown. The Golden Rectangle is defined as a rectangle that can be partioned into a square and a smaller rectangle which has the same aspect ratio of the original rectangle successively. Mathematically a ratio of about 3.2:2. The logarithmic spiral, or the “Spira Mirabilis” created by this ratio are found throughout nature, as in the contours of Nautilus shells or sunflowers. The Wise Old Bull (PG-13)
2007-03-19 07:40:41
Two bulls are standing on a hill on a sunny afternoon. Off in the distance, they see a group of cows. The young bull excitedly nudges the old bull and says, “Hey! Hey! I know! Let’s run down the hill and lay one of those cows!” The old bull looks at the young bull, then turns and takes a long look at the cows grazing in the distance. He turns back to the young bull and says, “Son, let’s walk down the hill and lay ‘em all.” (more…) Tags: old bull, young bull, adage, wisdom, moral

Leonard Bernstein
2007-03-23 18:00:38
Leonard Bernstein , Vogue (December 1958) “Any great work of art … revives and readapts time and space, and the measure of its success is the extent to which it makes you an inhabitant of that world—the extent to which it invites you in and lets you breathe its strange, special air.” Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, and pianist. He was the first conductor born in the United States of America to receive world-wide acclaim, and is known for both his conducting of the New York Philharmonic, including the acclaimed Young People’s Concerts series, and his multiple compositions, including West Side Story, Candide and On The Town. Another Kodak Fiasco…
2007-03-17 18:00:30
Just thought that some of you out there still working with film might find this interesting. Maybe disappointing is a better word… From Wireheadarts.com: “I noticed lately that a few films I was playing with were hard to find — most specifically EPT (Ektachrome 160T) and EPJ (Ektachrome 320T) — and dealers were mentioning that they thought it was discontinued. However, there wasn’t an announcement on Kodak ’s site. Finally, I called Kodak and asked them.” (more…)

Is It Just Me?
2007-03-26 06:19:24
Is it just me or is there an exorbitant amount of photographers out there actually claiming to be “fine art nude photographers” that really just suck, and have no taste? You used to get a straight answer from these guys. “Yes, this is porn,” or “yes these are just cheap dirty pictures,” or “no this is fine art photography, here are my photographs to back it up.” I understand the amount of garbage on the internet is staggering, but has it really come down to this? Are people that oblivious that they can’t even tell the difference themselves anymore? Do these guys actually wake up in the morning and believe that they are fine artists? Is the lack of taste in this world really that out of control? Maybe it’s just a marketing thing and I’m too much of a purist to see it or care. If you want to know how to shoot the figure, check out Patrick De Marchelier. He’s one of the only people doing it right these days. Sorry f
