2007-05-08 19:00:13
Learn them well. Originally posted on Epic Edits. ALWAYS Know Your Equipment - Know how to use your equipment, know what all the settings and options do, and know how they affect your photography. Be comfortable with your camera. NEVER Try Too Hard - Have fun and learn as you go. The hard stuff will start to come naturally; you’ll just get frustrated if you try forcing it. ALWAYS Break The Rules - Maybe not always, but don’t be afraid to do it. Know the rules of photography well enough to know how to properly break them. Looking For Photography Schools?
2007-05-12 19:00:55
Just because it’s called the Academy of Art doesn’t mean they know a thing about art. For some time know one of the highest paying keywords related to photography has been “photography schools”. Seems like everyday I see more ads for photography programs at various universities. More and more private institutions are popping up claiming to have the highest placement for photographers. What they don’t tell you is that wether you are freelancing or working at McDonald’s, you are considered “placed”. All too many young photographers are being duped into attending art schools under the pretense that when they graduate, they will find a job in their field almost immediately. This of course is complete and total rubbish. There are several things you should keep in mind when searching for or attending an art school for photography. Ilford Photo: The Future Of Film
2007-05-15 18:00:01
Ilford Press Room THE FUTURE OF FILM 14th May 2007 Comment on the future of film by Howard Hopwood, marketing director of Ilford Photo . Over recent times, the demand and usage of both digital and film-based imaging have settled into more discernable levels, with film very much holding its own. Howard Hopwood, marketing director of black-and-white photographic materials manufacturer ILFORD PHOTO, sees a very positive future for the traditional medium. The Future Of Film Although the mainstream digital imaging manufacturers and suppliers seemed to have ceased their alarmist, some would say desperate, predictions of a speedy demise for film-based photography, it is obvious that the market mix of media has continued to change dramatically. The Duality Of The Photograph
2007-05-17 19:00:53
Is a photograph documentation or art? Self-expression or communication? Reality or illusion? A photograph can be all of these and more; but, most certainly, it is not an ‘either-or’ dichotomy. You cannot have a left without a right, a valley without a mountain; all dualities and seeming dichotomies are part of a whole. In her book “On Photography”, Susan Sontag observed, “The history of photography is punctuated by a series of dualistic controversies.” (more…) Tags: film photography, digital photography, what is a photograph

Flickr Censors Stolen Photographs
2007-05-16 23:00:17
I will do my best to suppress the rage that I feel at the moment toward Flickr and the schmucks who stole Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir’s photos, but I make no promises. I have never really been a fan of Flickr. That is not to say that I didn’t like the website. The whole thing never really clicked with me. I was indifferent to the idea, nothing more, nothing less. After the stunt they have pulled my feelings are now drastically one sided. It seems that Flickr has joined the ranks of Getty and Corbis in their complete and total disregard for the rights of the photographer. Photography 2.0
2007-05-19 19:00:30
A group of teenagers sit in a cluster on the floor of an airport lounge photographing each other with cell phones and giggling. A man takes a picture of everything he eats that day and posts the results on his blog. Across the globe amateur photographers are recording and preserving the mind-numbing minutia of daily life. Births, birthday parties, cloud patterns, garbage on a street corner, the blur of traffic, or the neighbor’s dog. The result is an astounding collection of images adding up to hundreds of thousands of pictures every day. (more…) Tags: Web 2.0, Photography 2.0
