Value, Judgement and Intent
2007-04-10 19:00:24
What is the value of art? A means of acquiring knowledge? Does it provide us insight into the human condition? How does it relate to science or religion? Is it a tool of education, or indoctrination? Does art make us more moral? Can it uplift us spiritually? Is art simply politics by other means? Is there some value to sharing or expressing emotions? Is the value of art for the artist different than for the audience? (more…) Tags: aesthetics, art theory

Improving Awareness
2007-04-12 19:00:11
“Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution.” - Ansel Adams The word powerful not only describes the photograph itself, but Adams’ quote as well. Photography is and should always be considered a dynamic art form, although in some circles, this very idea is subject to intense debate to this day. Quotes: Elliott Erwitt
2007-04-14 19:00:40
Making pictures is a very simple act. There is no great secret in photography…schools are a bunch of crap. You just need practice and application of what you’ve learned. My absolute conviction is that if you are working reasonably well the only important thing is to keep shooting…it doesn’t matter whether you are making money or not. Keep working, because as you go through the process of working things begin to happen. -Elliott Erwitt Tags: artists, photographers, famous quotes, Elliott Erwitt

Adobe CS 3 Price Gouging
2007-04-14 01:00:32
I am a big fan of Adobe . They make great products. Photoshop never ceases to amaze me. Their software is intuitive and user-friendly. However the premiums we pay are a bit of control these days. Take for instance Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium at adobe.com. Sticker price in the states, $1,719.00. Thats a a pretty serious bill for a piece of software you’ll probably have to upgrade in a year. Here’s the kicker. Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium at adobe.de. Sticker price in Europe, €1,999.00. That’s $2,683.50 USD, a 49% markup. People wonder why pirate software is such an issue… Tags: adobe photoshop, cs 3, creative , suite, software, , digital imaging, CS 3 pricing

Photo Incognito, Urban Style
2007-04-13 19:00:14
Think Tank Photo has started plugging a new line of camera bags designated as the “Urban Disguise” series. The bags are pretty straight forward, black ballistic nylon, built for large digital SLR’s, two of the models will hold a laptop as well as two bodies. Prices range from $70.00 to $190.00, pretty much in line with the competition. Although I think they missed one key element… (more…) Tags: camera bags, camera cases, camera equipment

Halstead Predicts Earthquake, Third World War
2007-04-19 19:00:01
I was going to bite my tongue on this one, but I can’t keep quiet any longer. Everybody seems to be ranting about Dirk Halstead’s latest round of clairvoyant musings on the death of photography as we know it. Apparently all major camera manufacturers will go under, print magazines will fold, newspapers will go completely virtual and the world will be over-run with video-camera toting photo journalists. “If the change from film to digital was the equivalent of a magnitude 5 earthquake, the changes to photography in the next 10 years will be equivalent of a magnitude 10.” Thank you for articulating the blindingly obvious in such clear and certain terms. I thought the pace of technological advancement was actually slowing down. Good thing I read this article. (more…) Tags: Dirk Halstead, Digital Journalist, Digital Video, Photography

Bare Witness: Photographs by Gordon Parks
2007-04-18 19:00:48
Born in 1912 in Fort Scott, Kansas, Gordon Parks documented crime and poverty, as well as its opposite — glamour. An African American photographer, filmmaker, and author who began working professionally in the 1940s and contributed to magazines such as Life, Parks tackled the harsh truth and dignity of the black urban and rural poor in the United States. The exhibition, which comes from the collection of the Capital Group, is comprised of 73 photographs that were selected by the artist as some of the finest examples of his work. The Leica Freedom Train
2007-04-21 01:00:23
Leica cameras and lenses are often considered precise, effective, and well-built: the epitome of photographic form and function…while some perceive the company and it’s products as overpriced, inflated, and overrated. Perhaps the following story about the “Leica Freedom Train ” will have some readers acknowledging Leica and it’s founder, Ernst Leitz II, as symbols of humanity in our people’s history. As soon as Adolf Hitler was named chancellor of Germany in 1933, Ernst Leitz II began receiving frantic calls from Jewish associates, asking for his help in getting them and their families out of the country. Quotes: Aaron Siskind
2007-04-20 19:00:54
“When I make a photograph I want it to be an altogether new object, complete and self-contained, whose basic condition is order (unlike the world of events and actions whose permanent condition is change and disorder).” “The business of making a photograph may be said in simple terms to consist of three elements: the objective world (whose permanent condition is change and disorder), the sheet of paper on which the picture will be realized, and the experience which brings them together. “Life Is The Coffee”
2007-04-22 00:00:44
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and assortment of cups, porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite, telling them to help themselves to the coffee. Quotes: Yousuf Karsh
2007-04-26 19:00:34
If it’s a likeness, alone, it’s not a success. If, through my portraits, you can come to know the subjects more meaningfully, if it synthesizes your feelings toward someone whose work has imprinted itself on your mind–if you see a photograph and say, ‘Yes, this is the person,’ with a little new insight–that is a beautiful experience. -Yousuf Karsh Tags: artists, photographers, famous quotes, Yousuf Karsh
