Discovery’s Planet Earth
2007-04-03 03:00:08
The Discovery Channel’s “Planet Earth ” documentary began airing on March 25th, and if you haven’t caught it, it’s worth a look. The exceptional cinematography is only overshadowed by the astounding “nature” of the footage itself. I’m not a great lover of nature documentaries as such, although I thought March of The Penguins was brilliant, mainly for technical reasons. However, the execution and production quality of this series is really quite impressive. (more…) Tags: Discovery Channel, Planet Earth , Documentary, Cinematography

A Re-Evaluation Of Goals
2007-04-02 19:00:39
Since starting this blog a few months ago on a bit of a whim, the readership has steadily increased, leading me to believe that I must be doing something right. For this reason I have decided to devote more time to building and promoting this site, as well as keeping the content fresh, relevant and more frequent. The first step is the complete layout re-design that you may have noticed. For the most part everything seems to be working correctly at the moment. However, if anything appears glitchy or out of place, please contact me so I may correct the problem. For those readers that keep coming back, I thank you for your continued patronage, and hope that you will spread the word about this blog. I would love to hear any feed back or ideas you may have on how to improve this site. If you have anything to say please leave a comment or contact me if you are so inclined. Again, I thank you all… ~Origin

The End Of Film As We Know It
2007-04-02 10:27:45
The latest from the guys with the yellow box is the announcement of a major corporate merger. A few years ago Kodak CEO Antonio Perez said that for the most part film was dead and Kodak would be putting the bulk of its resources into digital photography. Today Kodak announced that digital photography is dead and the future is telecommunications. (more…) Tags: kodak, film, at&t, merger, kodak film

“The Art Snob can be recognized in the home by the quick look he gives the pictures on your walls, quick but penetrating, as though he were undressing them. This is followed either by complete and pained silence or a comment such as ‘That’s really a very pleasant little water color you have there.’” “The Art Snob will stand back from a picture at some distance, his head cocked slightly to one side. … After a long period of gazing (during which he may occasionally squint his eyes), he will approach to within a few inches of the picture and examine the brushwork; he will then return to his former distant position, give the picture another glance and walk away.” Russell Lynes, in Snobs (1950) Tags: artists, famous quotes

Primary Lenses Vs. Zoom Lenses
2007-04-03 16:00:04
How many of you out there are shooting zoom lenses? How many carry only primary lenses? How many carry both? This topic seems to come up quite often as of late, and in this time of technology moving faster than consumers an interesting question arises. Will primary lenses go the way of the dodo? Aspiring photographers will face off in a weekly photo shoot, and their work will be critiqued by a panel of judges. Those who don’t capture the ever sought after “Money Shot” will be sent home. Thoughts On Time And Photographs
2007-04-05 22:00:15
There are two contrasting views on the nature of time. One is that time is part of the structure of the universe. A dimension in which events occur in sequence. Time itself is something that can be measured. However it is also possible that time is part of our own intellectual structure within which we sequence events, calculate the duration of events and compare the actions of things. Time is not any sort of tangible entity that “flows”, that objects “move through”, or that events are “contained” within. Time is not an objective thing to be measured. Time is only a creation of our own imagination, nothing more than a mental measuring system. Time does not really exist. (more…) Tags: time theory, photographic time, art theory, random thoughts

Quotes: Berenice Abbott
2007-04-05 19:00:16
Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist techniques and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement, which can be described in a very simple term - selectivity. Berenice Abbott , in “Infinity” magazine, 1951. The Ingenuity Of The Photographer
2007-04-04 18:00:24
The ingenuity and resourcefulness of photographers (usually poor photographers) will never cease to amaze me. This little tidbit definitely makes the top ten list of ludicrous things photographers have come up with to solve problems while stuck in some third-world country. At http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/, believe it or not, you can download a lens hood. Thats right, download. Free printable lens hoods for download. Just click your camera, and select from a list of lenses for the appropriate hood. Can’t find exactly what your looking for? They’ve got you covered. Boston’s MFA to Open Photo Gallery
2007-04-07 04:15:28

The Herb Ritts Foundation donated 189 of Ritts’s photographs and $2.5 million to the museum’s “Building the New MFA” campaign. Quotes: Margaret Bourke-White
2007-04-08 19:00:41
The element of discovery is very important. I don’t repeat myself well. I want and need that stimulus of walking forward from one new world to another. There is something demoralizing about going back to a place to retake pictures. You can no longer see your subjects in a fresh eye; you keep comparing them with the pictures you hold in your memory. [The] world was full of discoveries waiting to be made…(as a photographer) I could share the things I saw and learned…you would react to something all others might walk by. Copyright Office Offers Online Registration
2007-04-07 19:00:42
There has been some buzz about this lately and is probably worth mentioning. The United States Copyright Office is now offering the option of filing copyright online. The fee will be $35.00 compared to the standard $45.00. Payments can be made online, and you will have the ability to track the status of the submission. By default, you are the owner of the copyright to a photograph the moment you release the shutter.  Formal registration of copyright with the government is essentially a precautionary measure. However, registration of copyright is required prior to filing any sort of infringement suit. Visit the US Copyright Office Online Services for more information. Tags: copyright registration, photographers rights

Quotes: Robert Doisneau
2007-04-09 19:00:27
I’m not a collector at heart. I’m never tormented by the longing to possess things. I’m quite happy with my pictures. I’ve been cohabiting with them for years now and we know each other inside out, so I feel I’m entitled to say that pictures have a life and a character of their own. Maybe they’re like plants they won’t really flourish unless you talk to them. I haven’t gone that far - not yet anyway. Lots of them behave like good little girls and give me a nice smile whenever I walk past, but others are real bitches and never miss any opportunity to ruin my life. I handle them with kid gloves. -Robert Doisneau, “Three Seconds of Eternity” by Robert Doisneau Tags: artists, photographers, famous quotes, Robert Doisneau

What Exactly Is Mostly Photography?
2007-04-10 22:37:43
Recently I have received a few complaints / requests for a more thorough description of what exactly this Mostly Photography thing is. So without further ado… What Mostly Photography is about… The title is pretty self explanatory. It’s about photography, mostly. Mostly Photography will never be exclusively about photography or photographs for one very simple reason, photography is about more than photographs. Photography is about “Life, The Universe, and Everything.” Photography is about experiencing the world around us. Photographs are about sharing that experience with the rest of the world. Photography is information, artistic expression, personal vision, often real, often exaggerated, always powerful. The photograph itself, as a document, has the ability to live forever.
