Low Fat Rant 2007-03-22 19:58:00 Gruelling Miss IndiasI haven’t ranted for a while and I don’t want to pull the wool over your eyes by letting you think I’m a sweet being. I believe that for a 3.5 minute interval on January 10th, 1987 I was a gentle and soft-spoken but that doesn’t really count since I was a toddler then. What am I going on about this time you ask? Well read the following article where the author talks about the way the Miss India pageant is structured.Let me start off by saying that I am perfectly fine with pageants and while I wouldn't participate in one, I by no means find it demeaning to women. The tone of the article and the opinions of the author aside, I am particularly horrified at the way the women who enter are treated. I don't want to paint them as innocent victims without expectations who were lured by a sheep in wolf's clothing.A sad trend that I feel is increasingly the case with the Miss India contestants is that they loose any individuality and end up looking alike. True, th
Miracle Creams? 2007-03-21 06:40:00 Clinique All About Eyes, Clinique Advanced Stop Signs Eye SPF 15, Clarins Eye Contour Gel, L'Oreal Eye DefenseA long time ago I was but an idealistic child who imagined that fairies roamed the earth and cosmetic companies told the truth. I believed them when they said that their creams would work miracles on my under-eyes and would lighten and brighten them. Like many other south Asian women, i have dark under-eyes that tend to scream at the world how tired I am if I miss even an hour of sleep. As it is highly unlikely that I will get the exact amount of sleep every night and dream of rosy-cheeked cherubs dancing and laughing, I have long forayed into the world of eye creams.Clinique All About EyesThis was my standard eye cream for the past five years. It is very moisturizing, but beware it can easily be too much and your under-eyes will become too greasy and your eye make-up will blend to darken your under-eyes. It does the job of moisturizing well but its claims that it will brighte Read more:Creams
Multi-tasking miracle 2007-03-21 05:53:00 Castor OilAlright, so I know it's been a while but I promise I have a great surprise in store. It's not finished yet but it'll be there soon. Until then my lovelies, all you can do is patiently wait for me to fill the void with my useless chatter. So in lieu of the anxious wait, I have some tips on natural beauty remedies. One of the great loves of my life is castor oil. I know it's incredibly thick and the smell can put you, and others (I have hard evidence to support this), off but if you don't mind your popularity suffering for a bit you'll discover it's a multi-purpose messiah. I have quite a few uses for it:Before I go to sleep, I pat a little bit on my under-eyes, and rub some on my lashes and eyebrows. It moisturizes my eyes better than any eye cream known to man, won't sting your eyes. On top of that it strengthens your lashes and eyebrows and makes them grow back. Being Indian, I know all about bushy eyebrows, but trust me when I say this has saved me after many a botch Read more:Multi

Daring to be bold (in a natural way) 2007-03-07 04:30:00 Bobbi Brown Tawny Shimmer Brich & Lip Kit The word shimmer has been known to give me goosebumps. Not the good kind, but the kind you get when you are about to jump off a plane and you were just informed that your parachute might or might not be working. Not that this has ever happened to me, and I imagine it hasn’t happened to you either, but I think it is a good display of my unadulterated terror of all things that are meant to add shimmer (the Kevyn Aucoin liquid white shimmer called to me simply because it was associated with, well, Kevyn Aucoin). I was seduced by the lip colours in the Bobbi Brown Tawny Shimmer Brick & Lip Kit. None of the colours are outlandish and they amplify my existing lip colours(yes, this is plural because I have two-toned lips). My lips look moist, natural, and slightly deeper in colour. The colours are all very flattering to my skin tone and the lip sheers especially have a very soft texture. The shimmer brick itself gives me a soft glow that I never kne Read more:Daring
Nude lips 2007-02-27 18:31:00 L'oreal Aishwarya's BeigeThe search for the perfect nude lipstick, that “my lips but then better” look, has taken me on a long and perilous path filled with dragon-tempered sales assistants at cosmetics counters, lipsticks that made me look like an evil witch, and lipsticks that made my lips look like I had grabbed Snow White’s poisoned apple and fell into a temporary death. All in all, a daunting and less than rewarding task. In keeping with the gloomy outcome of my search, I didn’t expect much of L’oreal’s Aishwarya’s Beige lipstick and anticipated that it would give me the dreaded hypothermia-lip look. I was pleasantly surprised when this shiny, very sheer mauve-beige lipstick toned down my darker top lip and made my bottom lip more similar in colour with the top one. This is the lipstick I always reach for when I have just tumbled out of bed and have exactly two minutes to look presentable. Agreed, it doesn’t impart that much colour but it’s more of a beige that
The elixir of happiness 2007-02-26 00:39:00 Fair and Lovely adYou too can view the truth in this ad.In case you’ve been wondering why your life sucks, Fair and Lovely has the answer. It’s because of your skin colour silly! It’s the reason behind every failure according to the maker of the cream. If you’re dark, you have reason to be rejected for your dream job, by your dream partner, by your parents, and by society in general. Gosh, I eally didn’t know that. I think I will start using Fair and Lovely and test it out for a month. If by some miracle I don’t get my promotion and in general lead a more fulfilled life, and we all know this will never happen (Fair and Lovely will never lie to us, the unhappy, dark, ignorant public), there will be hell to pay. But since the ad just reaffirmed the truth that fair skin means happiness

Palette for natural make-up 2007-02-26 00:10:00 Bobbi Brown Living Beauty PaletteIf you’re intimidated by the thought of colour and, unlike me, don’t have the spirit of a drag queen who never leaves the house without wearing a glittered set of false eyelashes, then this might be good choice. I was hesistant about the colours since they seem to be very similar or at least in the same family. However, they compliment each other very well and you can go from natural, yes I am familiar with this concept, to dark vampy eyes and lips. The darkest colour, espresso, serves as a liner and the perfect colour to enhance your brows. The brush is decent enough for quick touch ups, but I am as always partial to brushes that will last through a lot of abuse. The pot rouges function as blush and lipcolour and blend seemlessly. Even though some consider me vocal advocate of the dark side, a.k.a. dramatic make-up, I am forced to wear natural make-up to not paralyze the rest of humanity with my overzealous make-up. This onerous task of wearing nat
Lemon, honey, milk and, cucumber face mask 2007-02-24 02:14:00 Gentle face maskAlthough make-up is vital to my survival as a happy, fulfilled, and sane (I no longer dream that I am an Egyptian princess reincarnated thanks to the mystical powers of lipstick) human being, my first and foremost love is healthy skin. I will warn you though, my masks use natural stuff. And natural stuff can be gooey and takes getting used to the texture. Sure, the stickiness takes some getting used to, but the results are worth it. This is my favourite face mask that I make in my kitchen. Recipe: 1 tsp honey
A few drops of lemon juice. Use a fresh lemon for this, and by a few drops, I mean two or three (you don’t need much).3 tsp milkHalf a cucumber sliced horizontally (you get the circular slices of cucumber) The method: Mix all the ingredients except cucumber thoroughly.Dip your fingers into the mask. Just enough to spread onto your face, but so much that it drips all over your arms and you become a sticky mess.Gently Read more:Lemon
Lighter than Life Lips 2007-02-23 19:08:00 It's been a while, so I decided the right step was to write about a pet peeve of mine. Pale lips can complement a look beautifully. The drag queen inside me has been put to sleep (temporarily), so I can whole-heartedly agree that they can complement dramatic eye or cheek make-up. That’s the good variation of the pale lips. Then there’s the pale, pale, pale lips that are at least two shades paler than the skin tone of the wearer. Think about it. What kind of compliment would you give someone whose lips are so light compared their skin tone and that the lips look almost bluish? “I love the colour on your lips! It looks like you just ate a popsicle that was too cold and so you had to be rushed to the hospital for hypothermia. How divine!” See what I mean? You leave the realm of flattering only to arrive at the realm of zombie-hypothermia-suffering-popsicle-eater.
MAC eyeliners that last all day 2007-02-16 16:32:00 MAC Fluidlines in Blacktrack and MacrovioletI am quite sure South Asian culture would disintegrate if there was a global shortage of kajal or anything to line the eyes. Ask any desi woman and in her arsenal you will always find kajal. It's not going to be any natural or man-made catastrophe that will do us in, it's going to be lack of eyeliner. Luckily for us, this hasn't happened (yet). I feel my search for the perfect non-smearing eyeliner has come to an end. It was an epic saga that featured flaky eyeliner that used to migrate to my cheeks, or the eyeliner would not be dark enough, or it would not smear properly, etc. I have tried a number of types of eyeliners and I have developed a somewhat unhealthy love for gel eyeliners. They stay on throughout the day, great colours, and they last forever. Blacktrack is a deep, matte black that I use for everyday. I put it on in the morning with an eyeliner brush and I can forget about it till the evening. No flaking, no irritated eyes, no
Natural Makeup: Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta 2007-02-15 11:55:00 I confess, I'm a huge fan of getting inspiration from celebrity looks and try to make the look my own. Granted, I might know little to absolutely nothing, and by this I mean the great empty abyss that is my knolesge of desi celebs, but I would like to highlight some great make-up and cast the dreaded horror of the lowlight to some not so succesful looks.Lowlight: Kareena Kapoor
I can hear the protests already that this is a natural picture of her where she's wearing natural make-up. I am all for natural, all for it. Kevyn Aucoin blush and highlighter, Nars bronzer 2007-02-15 10:25:00 Alright, so I admit I'm not the most ardent blogger and my great following seems to reflect this. However, I have some exciting news: I have found two complete duds and one amazing bronzer. So let me start with the good:Nars bronzer in CasinoI only have good things to say about Nars. Well i'd love it if it were much cheaper, but goodness I love this bronzer. I aply this with a skunk brush and make sure I use a light hand. It took me a while to get this down as I alwas used to apply it too heavily and ended up looking lobster-esque. The texture and pigmentation is ivine and while I'm not a huge fan of too much shimmer this is subtle enough for it to look natural. The laguna bronzer was too light for me but Casino works great! The bad:Kevyn Aucoin "The Creamy Moist Glow" in PravellaI have all of Kevyn Aucoin's book and yes, he was an amazingly talented make-up artist. I am such a fan of his work (there was this one look he did on Naomi Campbell that had me hunting for similar colours f Read more:blush
Make-up choices for Indian women 2006-08-27 17:31:00 One of my biggest pet peeves is the horrid array of colours targeted towards Indian women. Last year I visited India after a long, long time. The mother ship(a.k.a. the make-up counters) called out to me and beamed me in. My first reaction was to check out the lakme counters since you can't get it out of the country. Unfortunately, the current trend is to use frosty pink or a cadaver purple on the lips. Never a good move. To top it off, there were no pressed powders made for dark skin. I dont wear foundation but i use pressed powder when i go out. Must blot the oilies. Instead, the counter had only an array of four, yes four, shades. Lakme, if you're reading this(which I highly doubt), this is not a good way to fulfill all your target audience's needs. Read more:choices
Let me introduce myself 2006-08-27 17:24:00 In a perfect world i would have been a make-up artist. I would eschew all societal conventions on Indian girls being engineers, computer scientists, or doctors and have followed my dream of being a make-up artist. I did get my degree in English and art. So I guess I'm just that much closer to being this brazen make-up diva(hence my blog's name). I am in no way an expert but i am a product junkie looking at colour form an (pseudo?) artist's perspective. So this is a brief introduction on my love for make-up. I hope you enjoy m postings. Rose-scented steam, yoghurt face mask, sweet almond oil eye massage 2007-03-23 19:08:00 Gentle, Soothing FacialGlowing skin is a must if you want your make-up to look good. I remember peeping into the mirror when I was twelve and realizing that my skin was dull and patchy. This demanded serious attention but since my parents were pro natural-remedies and "anti-chemicals" as they called it, I was left to use the natural remedies that were passed on for generations in my family. Never mind that my brother nicknamed my concoctions "pigeon shit," the natural face masks I used were very effective in cleansing my skin and giving it a soft glow. This is one of my favourite at-home facial.First, I steam with a few drops of rose essential oil added to the water. The scent relaxes me while I steam my face. Second, I massage the eye-area and lips gently with sweet almond oil. Third, I spread yogurt, I use low-fat, evenly over my face and avoid the eye-area and lips. Fourth, I put cotton pads dipped in cold milk over my eyes. I lie down with the mask on for about 15 to 20 minutes and
Summery body scrub 2007-04-05 19:58:00 Yummy Body ScrubWith Summer and Spring slowly peering through the raining skies, it's going to be time for sandals and frilly little skirts again. Since I used the word yummy to describe this, rest assured that it's another one of my "raid the pantry" recipes. This is one of my favourite scrub

You can store the scrub in a jar and keep it in the fridge.Ingredients:1 cup sugar4 tsp milk4 tsp rose water4 tsp cucumber water (grate a cucumber and squeeze the juice from it)4 tsp honeyMix the ingredients together and it's ready for use. You can add more sugar to get the consistency you prefer.
Summer Glosses 2007-04-22 21:38:00 Revlon Super Lustrous Lip GlossI absolutely love the Revlon super lustrous lip glosses. The packaging is sleep, modern, and grown up; the formula is neither too sticky nor too runny; and the glosses come in a range of colours that have great depth. There is one caveat to these glosses: their cough medicine smell. The smell is quite strong in the beginning and did take me back to the days where I took spoonful of cough medicine to prove to my mother that I was sick and didn't need to go to school. The good news is that the smell disappears quickly and what you are left with is a glossy sheen of dimensional colour. If you're looking for a beautiful nude shade that adds a nudey-pink sheen to your lips, Revlon Glossy Rose is a good bet. I have two-toned lips and lips products can make my lower lip a bright fuchsia and my upper lip an ashy purple. I think I might have vented about this before. However, this moisturizing lip gloss does the trick and doesn't make me look like I drenched my Read more:Summer

Great Make-up: Rani Mukherjee 2007-04-25 20:53:00 Copying the Make-upThis is a great look with soft, smokey brown eyes and understated lips. If you've read any interview where either Rani Mukherjee
or the make-up artists said that only eyeshadow, kajal, an lipstick was used, throw that out of the window. Although I was not the make-up artist present, I give you my breakdown for the following look.Prep:I always recommend using a good eye cream and moisturizing before applying any make-up. Just be careful to use products specific to your skin needs. This look requires that the brows are defined, so pluck any stray hairs before you start.Face:Flawless skin is an important part of this look. Choose a matte foundation with the right undertones to suit your skin.If necessary, apply concealer where needed. Blend concealer and foundation so that no patches of foundation or concealer can be seen.Eyes:I highly recommend using a primer before applying shadow. Bollywood Make-up... Again. Too much of a good thing? 2007-04-24 21:53:00 Alright, so once I'm on a roll, I get lightly obsessed. I'd like you to analyze whYIi have such an intense hatred for visible dark lipliner with frosted pink or grey lipstick. I'm not sure this abhorrence is healthy. Anyway, here is more information on Bollywood and make-up.Sonali Bendre:"I have a very sensitive skin, and anything unusual bothers my skin. I can't even use something like besan to wash it. It doesn't agree with me. When I get up, I just wash it with water and a non-moisturising soap. Moisturisers don't gel with me. The less I do to my skin, the better. The only thing I consciously do is to never sleep with make-up on. I use baby oil to take off the make-up and then wash it off with soap and water. ...Bollywood Celeb Make-up Continued 2007-04-24 21:03:00 Continuing with my obsession of make-up worn by bollywood celebrities, i stumbled on this article featuring Mallika Bhat. She is, according to Fashion Watch Indiatimes, "the make-up artist responsible for Kajol's luminous new comeback look in ‘Fanaa’, gives Aditi Jayakar Kane the lowdown on 'making-up' our screen beauties. " KAJOL Professionally speaking: I worked with Kajol in ‘Fanaa’ and the recent Marie Biscuit campaign. For ‘Fanaa’, since Kajol was making a comeback, I was given strict instructions by director Kunal Kohli that she needs to look very good in every frame. Throughout the movie, we used make-up to give her a 'no make-up' look. As she played a blind girl in the first half of the film, I used minimum make-up and only applied a little mascara to her eyes. But in the second half, I could experiment a bit more. I made her look more Indian because she plays a mother. I gave her hair-extensions and added kohl to her eyes, along with regular foundation an
Bollywood and Make-up 2007-04-24 17:10:00 Brands Celebrities UseI love make-up and am always on the lookout for more looks, tips, etc. Bollywood celebs have great make-up but somehow seem to feel they can't admit to wearing it. Is This Natural Make-Up? Is This Normal Behaviour? 2007-04-30 17:44:00 Mallika's Mishaps - Yes, I'm just that lame to find a title like thisI don't know whether this is a Lowlight, a make-up pet peeve, or just something that goes against everything I believe. Am I being dramatic? I don't think so. Take a look and tell me what you see. She's got a pretty face but her foundation is doing her no favours. If she comes out with a statement that she just "put on some gloss and some kaajal" and went to a press conference we'll know she's lying. It looks like a mask that is a couple of shades too light with the wrong undertones to boot. Then comes, I am feeling very faint form the impact here, the darkly lined lips with a different, lighter shade of lipstick and lip gloss. I don't really know what she's trying to accomplish here. Is she trying to tell us something about her mouth? Is the dark ring of lip line some code that I don't know about? Is it some kind of Bollywood insider secret? I don't know, but if you do please let me know. There has to be a Read more:Natural

Bollywood Make-Up Artist Speaks... A Little... On Make-Up Application 2007-04-30 17:33:00 So my search for finding out what desi celebs use has brought me one step further, only no one ever seems to specify what products are often used on specific celebs. I truly believe that the day will come when we will find out exactly what eyeshadow a particular celeb uses as a crease colour when she's making press statements. Until then, I suppose we can make do with this interview I found with Bollywood make-up artist Cory Walia. Makeup artiste Cory Walia (seen doing model Indrani Dasgupta's face at the Lakme beauty salon) lists five common makeup mistakes:* Using too much foundation or foundation that is the wrong colour. "Most people think foundation is a mask they can hide behind!" says Cory. People who have dark complexions tend to use a pink-based foundation. As a result is their skin looks purple, which Cory dubs as the 'Krishna look'.* Not using mascaraMost women do elaborate eye makeup and forget to use the one thing that will make a difference: mascara. Great Make-Up: Priyanka Chopra 2007-04-30 00:05:00 While I still felt the urge to voice my opinion on lining outside the natural lip line with Katrina Kaif's make-up, I have no such complaints with this one. Great Make-Up: Katrina kaif 2007-04-29 22:53:00 The next celebrity's make-up to be scrutinized by me is Katrina

Great Make-up: Malaika Arora 2007-04-29 21:27:00 My next breakdown features Malaika Arora

I wish I could actually steal her make-up bag, but for the time being, until I figure out to perform this heist, you'll have to do with my interpretation of her look.Prep:The basis of this look is soft, glowy skin. As always, I would advise you to start off with a gentle moisturizer and eye cream suited for your skin type.Since this look enhances the eyes with soft gold tones, make sure your eyebrows are neat. Pluck any stray hairs.Face:For this look, try a sheer, dewy foundation. If your skin is in good shape, you can possibly skip the moisturizer when you prep your skin and just use a tinted moisturizer.Apply concealer sparingly and only where needed. Don't forget to blend, blend, blend. You want to face a soft, flawless, glowing base.Eyes:You might have figured this out, but I always recommend using a primer before applying eye shadows. All Important Eye Enhancer: Good Brows 2007-05-06 05:43:00 My newest post will start off with a rant leading into much more relevant information. I wanted to grow out my eyebrows and reshape them. Since I don't trust myself with my eyebrows and like to get them threaded, I waited a full three weeks before getting my eyebrows threaded. You know the myth about desi women being hairy? This might be a myth to many, but to this desi woman, it's an unfortunate truth. My eyebrows hairs grow constantly and nature has blessed me with yet another asymmetrical feature. My eyebrows are different in length and thickness naturally. Instead of correcting them, I usually get them threaded as close to their natural length and as thick as possible without looking like I drew on one of my brows but not the other. Back to the matter at hand, walked out of the salon with incredibly thin and shortened brows. It looks like half my eyebrows are missing. In my world, that's not yet enough reason for me to put out a hit on the lady who threaded my eyebrows but it i Read more:Enhancer

Fairness Creams: Equal Opportunity Prey 2007-05-14 19:44:00 As you might have read, I tend to rant and splutter incomprehensibly until I foam at the mouth when it comes to the ridiculousness of fairness creams. After seeing this commercial I can't help but snicker. I'm glad the Indian companies that make fairness creams view men and women as equal opportunity prey. It's like a starved tiger pouncing on a deer. The tiger doesn't care if the deer is male or female, and neither do the makers of fairness creams. Ooh! That was vicious. Read more:Creams
