Synagogue car bomb
2007-03-19 10:49:29
My work  in previous entry “Car bomb” is in ways connected with Santiago Sierra’s piece where exhaust from six cars were pumped in to a former synagogue. After the second world war it was no longer used for religious purposes. The extermination had been so vast that the religious population in the area didn’t justify it’s use. My piece, “Exhaust” should be seen as a paraphrase to Sierra’s work, however, b

Police came by yesterday with a fine and strict warnings. They had somehow figured out that it was I who had left a box in town with a car engine in it. I was fined for ideling (aprox. 55 euro) but they wanted to emphasise the seriousness of the event. “Exhaust” stood ideling for about an hour before it was shut off and taken away by police. Someone had called in saying that it might be a bomb but they had not read the text on the box. It said that this is

Censure Block

Just got back from a meeting with Tate Modern Director, Vicente Todolí, Chief Curator, Sheena Wagstaff and Curator (Contemporary Art & Performance), Catherine Wood. We discussed the up coming “Censure block” show. At the exhibition I will be presenting myself as a mortal work which personofies what west finds irreverent about east. The first of which will be to present my new tattoos. They represent censured bodyparts as found in a western magazine in Iran. Link Ja, jag är man, men det är inte u

Charity, our excremt
2007-03-11 11:06:50
To see economic growth as an asset to poor countries is interesting. We think flowers grow on oil fields. I’m paraphrasing, apparently it’s sufficient to tatto a sun on your anus if you want to shit pearl necklaces. Mannen utan egenskaper

Men vad?

“A toilet which flushes to the sound of Italy’s national anthem has been impounded by police in northern Italy, sparking great patriotic debate” Maybe you think this is stupid. I don’t know where you live but in Sweden the national anthem is hardly sacred, however, believe me, that is not for a lack of nationalism. Living in Sweden I’m sure that the notion of a “great patriotic debate” would have to include the desecration of the reputation of benevolence. We have come so far that we compare ourselves with other affluent nations proclaiming this altruism to be nested in the identity of what it is to be swedish. Again this entry is a prelude to my own work. This blog is a process that builds context for coming works. Keep an eye out for works combining altruistic nationalism with projected self imaging that won’t flush. nov 2006 Bolzano Museum of Modern Art. Detecting airborne viruses at the art museum.
2007-03-25 14:38:27
Surrounding knowledge Detecting airborne viruses at the art museum. This is my latest project. A device, to be shown at The Museum of Modern art, shows the occurrence of two types of viruses present at the museum at the point of your visit. The work uses advanced sensors capable of detecting airborne viruses. The device operates a miniature “cantilever,” a diving board-like beam of silicon that naturally vibrates at a specific frequency. It is extremely sensitive to added mass, such as the addition of even a single virus particle. When a virus particle weighing about one-trillionth as much as a grain of rice lands on the cantilever, it vibrates at a different frequency. Before you enter an exhibition you will know the risks you are facing, in this case, Influenza and the Rhinovirus. The flu and the common cold. The image shows the movement and concentration of a Influenzavirus in a room over a period of one hour. In this case the carrier remained in the room, moving aroun

will the artists urine make you sick
2007-04-06 14:23:05
Since Itziar Okariz will be urinating on a stage at an exhibition where I will be installing my virus detection system, (”Detecting airborne viruses at the opera”, see future entry at the end of the month) some questions have come in asking if I will be detecting viruses that are passed on via body fluids. The answer to that question is simply no. I will only be registering the airborne Rhinovirus (the common cold) and although the Rhinovirus can be passed on through body fluids it is much more likely that you catch it from the person standing next to you watching the same performance. The reactions to Okariz’s work are astonishing and some people are trying to use my work to prove that it is not only disgusting but also dangerous. Some politicians are calling for a total boycott of the MADE festival and are getting strong consensus from the local population (in Umeå, Sweden).

Ofcourse this will seem perverted

“We are so used to this world that we cannot see its perversion anymore. Ofcourse this will seem perverted…” Just a really nice quote taken from Laura Cinti’s The Cactus Project, a transgenic cactus plant growing human hair. Perversion needs to be subtle, not quite right - staying so close to right that we feel the restrictions of our own convictions closing in on us. Re: Detecting airborne viruses in the art world. For more information on this see previous post I tend to focus on the involuntary contribution by the audience who, potentially, become the object of their own fears. But I like this take on it by critic Bill Gusky. Ang: Att spåra luftburna virus i konstvärlden. “I haven’t had time to digest this all, but my initial reaction is that this is one interesting agent. I’ll be getting back to it later, but maybe you’ll have some thoughts or reactions, or maybe you’re totally familiar with Mr. Cuzner’s work and will fill me in on the details. Surveillance through the Rhinovirus
2007-04-18 23:02:51
In my piece, “Detecting airborne viruses at the opera”,  it is the presence of the Rhinovirus in a room that is detected.  I am working on the final touches and will soon be posting a link where you can see the virus activity in real-time during the MADE festival at Norrlandsoperan in Umeå, Sweden, May 9 - 12 2007  You may not be aware that you are a carrier but this device will.

It is now possible to see the Rhinovirus in action at the opera house in northern Sweden HERE NOTE: You will need Flash Player and some firewall setting may prevent your computer from updating sensor activity from server. Detecting airborne viruses at the opera I don’t contribute with anything to this piece. It is the public who carries it with them. It’s about an involuntary participation where the reaction to the piece is much more important than the piece itself. A piece where the spectator is potentially the subject of their own fears. it is that fear that is on display. Most of our colds are caused by Rhinoviruses. The common conception has been that the main transmitter of Rhinoviruses was through touch, but clinical studies show that the primary culprit for contamination is extended exposure to indoor concentrations to airborne particles. They spread through invisible droplets in the air you breath. When you sneeze you send out between 3000 and 5000 droplets at up to 120 k

Revisiting old projects; Gastrology
2007-05-25 12:33:40
I am revisiting some of my older projects that may be relevant in the forming of new ones. This is from 2000, in Vancouver, Canada. In this mockumentary our guide, Dr. Lars Cuzner PhD, takes us through the making of Gastrology; a more worldly relevant horoscope. By connecting dots of chewing gum stains on the ground a new way to read the human condition is created. The human energy and DNA that is found in the gum reveals a zodiac that is much more in tune with the way we live today. A constellation to replace star signs. More later on how this relates to Detecting airborne viruses in the art world.
