2006-10-20 08:39:00
The new Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 released this week, has been well received by critics. The new version, the first upgrade to the browser for more than five years, features tabbed browsing, a redesigned interface, an anti-phishing toolbar and a variety of other security features.According to Microsoft the Phishing Filter analyses pages and warns users about suspicious sites, blocking access to confirmed phishing sites the instant they appear online. It boasts that the Phishing Filter has already blocked over 700,000 phishing attempts. So far no serious bugs have emerged in IE7, apart from vulnerability in Outlook Express, not the web browser.According to information on a blog written by Microsoft security representative Christopher Budd, Web browsers, including IE 7, can be used to exploit the Outlook Express flaw. Microsoft postpones Windows XP SP3 to 2008
2006-10-20 08:38:00
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), the next significant update to the operating system, now won't appear until the first half of 2008, Microsoft quietly revealed this week. In January, Microsoft had promised SP3 in the last half of 2007.Although Microsoft gave no reason for the delay in its revised Windows Service Pack Road Map, which was updated Tuesday, it effectively pushed back SP3 by at least six months. SP3 for both the Home and Professional editions of Windows XP is now scheduled to release in the first half of 2008. Windows XP's last service pack, SP2, launched in August 2004.The new schedule means that Microsoft could drop support for Windows XP within months of SP3's release. According to its published support commitments, Microsoft has promised to maintain Windows XP for two years after the release of Windows Vista. If Vista debuts on time in January 2007 and Windows XP SP3 doesn't appear until June 2008, the latter would age out in January 2009, seven months after it was

Ten updates -- and server problems -- on October's Patch Tuesday
2006-10-11 11:58:00
Microsoft may have announced eleven updates last Friday for the October Patch Tuesday , but the company has ended up only releasing ten. There were also initial problems with delivery: in a blog entry by the Microsoft security team, Craig Gehre wrote that network problems were preventing the updates from being distributed via Microsoft Update, Automatic Updates, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Windows Update v6 - although technicians were already working on the problem. After a few hours these problems were resolved and automatic updates are working correctly.Of the ten updates actually released, six close critical holes in Windows and Office. One patch removes a hole in the Server Service that is classified as "important", and two updates remove moderate security holes in ASP.Net and in Windows Object Packager, respectively. Another software patch removes a denial of service hole in the TCP/IP stack, a problem classified by Microsoft as having a low priority. The patch for S

Microsoft malfunction fouls Patch Tuesday releases
2006-10-10 11:50:00
Microsoft Tuesday published 26 security bulletins related to vulnerabilities in its Windows and Office products, but had network problems that kept it from making the software patches available via Microsoft Update, Automatic Updates, Windows Server Update Services and Windows Update v6.According to the Microsoft Web site, the Patch Tuesday delay was due to "networking for these systems: there are no issues with the security updates themselves," a situation confirmed by a Microsoft spokesperson. "Due to technical difficulties experienced on the Microsoft Update platform," there was a failure to deliver the patches via the impacted services, the Microsoft spokesman stated. "Technical teams are engaged and have been working around the clock to resolve the problem and we anticipate that updates will be made available via the Microsoft Update platform by the end of the day October 10th"The network problems that lasted throughout the course of the day are said to impact some bu

Microsoft preps Vista defences
2006-10-06 14:39:00
As the launch of Vista approaches, Microsoft is gearing up to protect its new investment from the inevitable attention of the pirates. Under the banner of the Software Protection Platform (SP Platform), the company is introducing a battery of new safeguards to identify dodgy copies and encourage customers to buy the genuine article.Microsoft claims it has lost billions of dollars to software pirates over the years. The situation is particularly acute in the Far East where licenced copies of Windows are often the exception rather than the rule.Although presumably it is quite capable of doing so, Microsoft says it 'cannot and will not turn off your computer' if it is using counterfeit versions of Vista. Instead, the company intends to use both carrot and stick to persuade customers to buy the real thing.Customers using genuine copies of Windows Vista will be able to run the Windows Aero and Windows ReadyBoost features, as well as full functionality of Windows Defender and extra optiona

Microsoft Japan Uses Windows Update for Gov't Certificates
2006-09-28 14:29:00
Microsoft Corp. in Japan began distribution of digital certificates that the central and local governments issue, using its Microsoft Update system, the company said on Thursday.Microsoft is aiding Japan's recent technology project called the Digital Government System. As part of the program the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications along with local administrative bodies accept applications for issuance of official documents such as certificates of address change, marriage, and alien registration. The government asked Microsoft, a maker of its most dominant computer operating system Windows Japan, for a secured distribution system for root certificate.Microsoft started the distribution to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users earlier this month. On Thursday it extended its reach to all versions of the Windows Operating System. The root certificate will be automatically installed into the computer as part of Windows Update, a web-based software update service for Microsoft W

Saving Windows Update Downloads
2006-09-21 13:09:00
If you use the regular Windows Update Web site, updates you select are downloaded and installed, you are not offered the option to save them for later use, or for distribution to non-Internet connected PC's. Nor can you download updates for other computers (hardware/software drivers for example). Also, a System Restore could overwrite updated files, but Windows Update would still show the update as installed, and won't let you download them again. To save Windows Update files, connect to the Windows Update Catalog site. Here you can download all updates for all Windows XP OS types, and driver updates. Any updates you select will be collected in your Download Basket. If you have all updates you need, click on the link for your Download Basket. Here you can review/remove the updates you have selected. Press the Browse button to browse for a folder on your system/network where you want to save the files, and then press the Download Now button. You have to accept the License Agree

Windows Update bug brings computers to crawl with scan
2006-08-03 09:19:00
Windows administrators are grappling with a bug that surfaced last week in the Microsoft Update scan engine that impedes performance of a client while undergoing a routine scan. According to IT experts at MyITForum.com, a site devoted to covering Windows manageability, the problem can cause Microsoft Update and Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) around five minutes per scan on a client. "During the scan the processor utilization spikes and is maintained by the scan," according to Microsoft's analysis of the problem posted on the site. "When a computer is scanned, there is a lot of hard disk utilization anyway, but it takes a lot of CPU cycles to do the scan," said one expert. "So both hard drive and CPU are being impacted." IT administrators in companies that don't have all the latest computers with plenty of RAM will likely be the hardest hit. Initially, administrators thought the bug was connected to the Inventory Tool (ITMU) for Microsoft Updates in Systems Management

Microsoft Will Distribute IE7 Through Windows Update
2006-07-31 09:19:00
Microsoft quietly announced last week that it will distribute its new Internet Explorer 7 browser (known mainly as IE7) through Windows Update as a "high priority update" The Windows Update service is found on most Windows XP operating systems, and in most cases will automatically download critical software bug fixes, patches, and secretary updates. Although its rare that the company would release a major software enhancement in this fashion, Microsoft justifies its actions by stating that there are many "advanced security" features on its upcoming release, making a security fix rather than a browser upgrade. However, distributing IE through Windows most certainly gives the Redmond, Washington based company a leg up against its competitors, most notably Firefox and Opera. The IE browser has steadily been losing market share since Firefox was released, and the Internet Explorer 7 (which hasn't seen a major upgrade in the past 6 years) mimics the Firefox browser, adding tabbed

Microsoft IE 7 Likely To Gain Rapid Adoption
2006-10-26 09:44:00
WebSideStory, a leading provider of digital marketing and analytics solutions, has released exclusive data showing that Microsoft 's long-awaited browser, Internet Explorer 7, will likely gain rapid adoption on the web if past history is any indication. Based on the growth of its predecessor, IE 7 should become the dominant browser version within a year, perhaps even faster as Microsoft bundles the new browser and its enhanced security measures into an automatic security update. Launched in Aug. 2001, IE 6 grew to more than 45% usage share within one year on Windows operating systems, and then surpassed IE 5 for good one month later, according to t

Internet Explorer 7 rises to level of its competition
2006-10-30 07:46:00
When hundreds of millions of people rely on software that grows more complex with each release, publishers find it harder to get updates out the door - as Microsoft knows all too well.Windows Vista, the long-awaited revision of Microsoft's flagship operating system, won't be ready for consumers until early next year - behind schedule and after the holiday shopping season.Luckily, Microsoft won't make us wait that long to update its Web browser. Internet Explorer 7, the first face-lift for the program since 2001, is available for downloading now, and it looks pretty good.Of course, it has to compete with a couple of other free Web browsers these days - an open-source project called Mozilla Firefox and a Norwegian entry known as Opera.During the past few years, they've taken a chunk out of IE's overwhelming market share - particularly among experienced Web surfers. And with good reason. They were faster, more versatile and more secure than Internet Explorer 6.To give credit where it

Microsoft to release six Windows security updates
2006-11-10 20:19:00
Microsoft will release six groups of security patches next Tuesday, fixing flaws in its Windows operating system. The updates will be released as part of Microsoft's regularly scheduled monthly patch release, and will fix critical flaws in Windows and the company's XML (Extensible Markup Language) parser, according to Microsoft. With only six updates, November looks to be a quieter month for systems administrators than October. Last month, Microsoft issued 10 updates, fixing 26 bugs in its Windows and Office software. The XML update is of particular interest to security experts because hackers have posted code showing how a flaw in the parser could be exploited to run unauthorised programs on a PC. However, Microsoft gave no indication that it plans to patch this or another recent bug, reported last week in its Visual Studio software. That bug, known as the WMI Object vulnerability could also allow an attacker to run unauthorized code on a victim's computer. Because these bugs were

Windows Vista provides two entirely new features to manage windows: Windows Flip and Windows Flip 3D. Flip allows you to flip through open windows (by using Alt+Tab), providing a live thumbnail of each window, rather than just a generic icon and file name. Live thumbnails make it easier to quickly identify the window you want, particularly when multiple windows of the same kind are open. With Flip 3D, you can use the scroll wheel on your mouse to flip through open windows in a stack, and quickly locate and select the one you want to work with.

IE 7 automatic updates get green light for XP users
2006-11-14 11:56:00
Microsoft has begun the automatic update process for users of IE 6 on computers running genuine versions of Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 and Window XP x64, with the rollout process expected to take months. That's because Microsoft doesn't want to flood their servers with requests for IE 7 updates from users around the world. English language users started seeing requests to update the IE browser from November 1. On Wednesday November 15, users of Windows XP or better in German, French, Spanish, Finnish, Brazilian Portuguese and Arabic will start seeing update notifications as well, with other languages to follow throughout 2007.Users are not forced into upgrading to IE 7 right away, with users able to block the update from installation, with administrators also able to prevent the update on their business fleets of computers until they are ready to allow the update to happen. Microsoft says it's willing, but Red Hat rejects alliance
2006-11-17 12:27:00
Offer follows deal to make Linux, Windows compatibleMicrosoft Corp., which has agreed with Novell Inc. to make Linux and Windows compatible, opened the door Thursday to a similar alliance with Red Hat Inc. "We are willing to do the same deal with Red Hat Linux and other Linux distributors," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said at an SQL database software conference in Seattle. Microsoft and Novell agreed two weeks ago to enable their software to co-exist on a single server computer in response to demands from customers who are increasingly using both. The agreement, which dulled a longstanding rivalry between Microsoft and Linux, also came as Oracle Corp. boosted its Linux efforts, threatening both Microsoft and Novell. Ballmer, responding to an audience member's suggestion that the deal might reflect Microsoft "selling out," said it was necessary to keep customers happy. To illustrate his point, he polled the audience of several hundred customers of SQL Server, Microsoft's d

Microsoft sits on Zune Vista upgrade
2006-11-17 12:25:00
we revealed that Microsoft 's iPod killing Zune does not work with its new super soaraway operating system Vista . We wondered why the Zune team did not work with the Vista team so that the machines could work together. According to a deep throat in the Redmond Vole hill, there is a Vista patch which enables Zune to operate it is just that it has not been made public. Vista had been running on lots of machines in various Microsoft offices and the patch was developed for those who were testing the Zune to play with. Microsoft apparently did not see the need for the software patch to ship with the early launch of the Zune because Vista was not available to the sorts of riff-raff who would by the Zune. In other words we can expect to see a Zune patch for Vista being launched with when the operating system is released to home users in January.

Exploit surfaces for just-patched Windows flaw
2006-11-21 08:34:00
A recently disclosed vulnerability which was fixed in Microsoft's latest security update is the target of an exploit. The vulnerability had not been made public until Microsoft released a fix on 14 November as part of its monthly security patch cycle. Three hours later, an exploit targeting unpatched systems was released. The exploit was posted by security research firm Immunity Inc as a module for its Canvas security research application. Kostya Korchinsky, a senior analyst at Immunity Inc, confirmed to vnunet.com that within one hour of the patch's release, the firm had posted proof-of-concept code on the vulnerability. Within three hours, Immunity had a fully working exploit. The exploit targets a vulnerability in the Windows Workstation service, a networking component that handles printer and file access operations. Microsoft said that the flaw could allow an attacker to gain complete control of system. The attack is carried out through a server containing the exploit code

Microsoft updating backbone of profits
2006-11-25 11:19:00
Software giant has much riding on new Office, Windows VistaAll at once, Microsoft is launching crucial upgrades to the company's most widely used and most profitable products. They include a new Windows operating system, known as Vista; an update of the Office package, which includes Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint; and server software that handles behind-the-scenes functions. The products will begin to be available for business users Thursday, with a consumer release of Windows and Office on Jan. 30. Even in a less competitive world, the enormity of the launch would make this a crucial time for Microsoft. Vista has been delayed so long that it has been five years since the last overhaul of the operating system, which runs 90 percent of the world's personal computers. Office last got refreshed in 2003. But the stakes are particularly high now. Savvy competitors using the Internet are challenging Microsoft's status as computing's vital plumbing provider. Meanwhile, Microsoft is

Microsoft Takes the Windows Vista Road
2006-12-05 06:41:00
After five years of hard work and 9 billion dollars worth of investments, Windows Vista fails to provide an answer to a simple question: "Who needs it?"Ever since 2002, Microsoft has not missed a single chance to tell how revolutionary, how reliable and how special the new Windows would be (dubbed Longhorn up to 2005).However, under the pressure of time, competition and many other factors, some services have been eliminated; others have been rethought while others have not even been mentioned again. The final result? An operating system whose hardware requirements are met only by half of the computers currently used in the US (there's no point mentioning the rest of the world), an OS which brings several significant transformations to what Windows has meant so far.The first and most talked about change that Windows Vista brings is its new graphic interface, also known as Aero (those inclined toward sarcasm haven't been able to refrain from commenting that Aero is inspired by App
