Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh; Zimbabwe vs Pakistan
2007-03-21 19:52:01
Interesting games today- the winner of Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka will secure qualification. Even if Bangladesh lose today they are still well placed to go through. Meanwhile Zimbabwe will be their usual selves, but it is anyone’s guess as to what version of Pakistan will turn up today. 2007 world cup, bangladesh, live coverage, pakistan, sri lanka, zimbabwe

Kiwis and Springboks sail through the next stage of World Cup
2007-03-21 16:06:31
Newly crowned number one cricket team of the world South Africa made it to the next round of super eight along with New Zealand. Both the teams registered easy wins over minnow teams of Scotland and Kenya respectively yesterday. In reply to a modest Scottish total of 186 for the fall of 8 wickets, the proteas raced swiftly to a score 134 in just 15 over because of solid first wicket partnership of skipper Graeme Smith & AB de Villiers. Ultimately, South Africa completed the formality in the 24th over itself and registered a 7 wickets win over Scotland. Now, they face the defending champion Australia in their last league match on 24th of March. On the other hand, New Zealand posted an impressive score of 331 for the fall of seven wickets in their 148 runs win over Kenya in Group C match at St Lucia. Though Kenya made an attempt to accomplish that grand total but was unable to muster enough sustainable batting performance except that of Ravindu Shah & Thomas Odoyo who played r

West Indies sail through despite lackluster performance
2007-03-21 15:57:05
World cup hosts West Indies qualified the super eight stage with a lacklustre performance over Zimbabwe. This victory was far from the brilliance they showed against Pakistan. With the match swinging from one side to another finally came to the hosts. The match started with Zimbabwe batting first and starting with a few hiccups. The opening batsman gave in early. The score read 2-2. Soon, it was to be 59-4. The side could have easily collapsed, but thanks to a lackluster bowling by the West Indian bowlers and a fight back by the two new comers Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams, the score reached to a respectable total of 202-5. The youngsters showed the confidence not to be mowed down. Though, the Indies bowlers too contributed with a few extras. Chasing a modest total, the West Indian innings began with a cautious start. Openers Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul batted very slowly together, but built the platform for the win with a first-wicket stand of 73. Chanderpaul was the fi

Flintoff sorry for ’shameful’ act after being sacked as England Vice-Captain
2007-03-21 15:51:48
It cost him his vice- captaincy. England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and five of his team mates were disciplined following a drinking spree less than 48 hours before their second match in the World Cup, against Canada. It was apology time for Flintoff, who addressed the media feeling embarrassed, ashamed and very sorry for what had happened and the over entire hullabaloo following the incident. He indulged in what he called ‘an incident involving water and a pedalo’. He and his five companions, James Anderson, Jon Lewis, Ian Bell, Paul Nixon and Liam Plunkett were the other players fined and banned for playing against Canada, which the team won without them. Though Flintoff was a step ahead of his five teammates in the wrong act that put even his life in danger. He had to be rescued. Recalling his responsibility as a representative of his nation in the world cup, he said; There are responsibilities on and off the field and I want to adhere to that. It’s a huge wake

Religion and politics

“You wouldn’t normally associate cricket with Catholics,” he said after a training session at the Aga Khan ground this week. “It’s more a protestant sport in Northern Ireland. There were always British army troops based in Northern Ireland and Strabane and, perhaps, they would’ve brought it with them. But it’s always had an affection with the locals and it’s been played by all traditions in Strabane.” That’s what Peter Gillespie, the Ireland allrounder, told me in Nairobi in February. So it was interesting to read this post from an Ireland blogger about his country beating Pakistan and what ramifications it might have. To a Pakistani, Ireland beating their national team must be a bit like San Marino beating Brazil in soccer. Our national soccer coach was nearly flayed alive (metaphorically) by soccer pundits for nearly drawing against San Marino a few months ago, so I can only imagine what the depth of feeling was in Pakistan

Kenya take on New Zealand today - can’t wait to hear how that goes. New Zealand looked good against England (not hard) but Kenya…well, I really fancy their chances. How they cope with the tournament’s most outstanding fast bowler, Shane Bond, will be interesting. Scorecard links are below…then leave your thoughts. Bringing Balance to the Force
2007-03-23 09:18:08
There is much in my life that the Holy Trilogy has taught me. I refer of course to Star Wars (the original, not the unwatchable prequels). As I make my way through this long and often chaotic journey, I know that I can always refer back to it for understanding and comfort in the face of confusion. Of course, as Joseph Campbell pointed out, Star Wars was really just a vehicle for the re-telling of the story of the Hero With a Thousand Faces: A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. [Link] The original Star Wars Trilogy featured Luke Skywalker as the Hero. The prequels featured Anakin/Darth Vader as an anti-hero. All this introduction brings me to the story of Sanjaya Malakar, the 17-year-old singer on American Idol. He is the one. The chosen one that will bring a ba

This is a public service announcement for those living under a rock. Most of my friends went through 18 dull years of their lives without seeing this film. I know. Crazy. It’s hard to think of a movie that has so many B’wood heavyweights. Best male playback singer Best comedian/actor Most beautiful heroine Best bad guy All for the price of one. I humbly present Half Ticket. Plot: Appropriately silly Cast: Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Pran, Shammi, Tun Tun, Manorama Note to IMDB: Om Prakash has nothing to do with this movie. There is, however a hilarious cameo by Pradeep Kumar. Music: Salil Chaudhari (great as usual) Highlights: Too many to note, but here are just a few. Chil chil chillaake has KK in great form. The background is filled with exceptional bunch of strange looking people. Shailendra is credited with, ahem, lyrics. Aake seedhi lagi dil pe: A duet sung by one singer. Lata Mangeshkar was originally slated to sing the female lead. KK decided to sing it himself. His

Recently, I came across this rare Turkish poster of Dandia (also known as Enter the Dandia), the classic 1973 Robert Clouse Kung Fu Dandia thriller. Lee plays a monk (named Lee) who enters a brutal dandia championship tournament for which only the best are invited. His athletic prowess lands him there, but he’s also serving as a spy for the Gujarat government, and he’s out to prove that the contest’s manager, Pran, is also a player in the drug trade. Will Lee be the last man dancing? Starring: Bruce Lee, Jignesh Pandya, Hetal Shah and Pran Sikand.

How do you make sure that your little brown kids don’t grow up all confused and alienated? You sit them down and teach them couple of important facts of life. Fact 1 Superman is nothing but a corn-fed biter who based his entire routine on Mahabali Hanuman. Fact 2 They come from the land where OGs like Rajasaurus Narmadensis once roamed free. Their faces glow with pride. You watch with quiet satisfaction as they enter the classroom with their righteous tiny brown fists raised up.

Lately my posts have few and far between. I am working on a project that’s taking more time than I had expected. It’s a series inspired by the global Indian presence. One day, someone will write something deep and thoughtful on the subject. Me? I’m a simple soul with whimsical tastes. And I plan to follow my, ahem, muse in that direction. I call this project Cultural Mashup. Throw two cultures in a blender and see what comes up. Stay tuned and thank you for checking in.

Bermuda gain a billion fans
2007-03-24 06:03:24
Poor India. Poor, poor old India. As me Martin and Jenny covered West Indies’ comprehensive thrashing of Ireland, we had one eye (sometimes both) on India’s key encounter with Sri Lanka. Now then. However much we try to remain unbiased, neutral and balanced cricket journalists, everyone has a favourite team or enjoys seeing one side struggle. India is one such team. Maybe it’s an unspoken competitiveness we have at Cricinfo between the London office and our guys in Bangalore, but there was no shortage of whooping when India were, well, whooped. Commiserations to Vasu, Sriram, George, Rajesh and co. out there, whose livers will be receiving a severe workout right now. All is not lost, however. India simply need Bermuda to thrash Bangladesh. Unfortunately, that’s about as likely as Ricky Ponting never again uttering “aw, look” at a press conference. The best line came from Ryan at CaribbeanCricket who, moments after Sri Lanka won, said “Bermuda g

Sunblock? Rumblock
2007-03-24 05:41:17
Last week I wrote about the Trinidadians’ clever use of a zip-lock bag to sneak in contraband (contrabanned, more like), which the authorities in the Caribbean prohibit. That was clever, but not nearly as ingenious as the use of a bottle of sunblock! I love the expression on that bloke’s face, behind, raising his glass of rum. Well done, Trinis! India makes disgraceful exit from WC, well almost
2007-03-24 05:20:34
Yet another spineless display of batting and tactical errors in captaincy has virtually shown India the door out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007. So, how would you describe this defeat, obviously disgraceful and… no need to say anything as you too might have uttered the same words as the rest of the ‘Billion’ did! It was not even a close match. India lost by a whopping 69 runs in a do-or-die match! Such a shocking and shameful defeat has again proved that they are still lacking good batting and bowling line and by chance if ever it comes (as it came in the last match played between India and Bermuda) then it lacks strategy whereby they should pave the way for their victory, and now it seems that India are going to be 2nd major casualty after Pakistan were eliminated from Group D following their loss against debutants Ireland. Right from the very beginning when India won toss to field first, it became obvious they are taking a defensive stance where as it should ha

Patholgist or villan sob sob
2007-03-24 04:46:02
The pathologist in the Caribbean who performed the autopsy on Bob Woolmer is not missed in his native village by locals who consider him a “villain”. Ere Seshaiah, who established that Woolmer was murdered, is from Chintaparti village in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district - famous for Tirupati temple. But smiles freeze on the faces of its residents at the mention of Seshaiah. “He may be a hero for you. But for us, he is a villain because he abandoned his parents. His 75-year-old mother lives alone in a small hut in the village and the doctor does not send her any money,” said a villager, who did not want to be named. The eldest son of Ere Subbarayappa and Venkatamma, Seshaiah has three brothers and sisters. Villagers say his parents sold their property - five acres of land in order to fund his education to become a doctor. He graduated in 1972 and worked in the primary health centres in Errakotapalle in Kalakada mandal, Garnimitta in Kambhamvaripalle manda

India vs Sri Lanka, West Indies vs Ireland
2007-03-23 18:49:39
India go out of the 2007 World Cup if they don’t win tonight’s fixture against Sri Lanka . Meanwhile, the Super 8’s start early, with West Indies and Ireland having already qualified in their group; the winner gets a flying start in the main section of the tournament. I’ll be blunt though and say that my enthusiasm for the 2007 World Cup has been diminished by the tragic murder of Bob Woolmer. It was bad enough when I heard that the house of Mahendra Singh Dhoni had been burnt down by demented Indian fans, and it was made much worse when I heard that Woolmer had died. But murder? The Aussie Rules season starts next weekend, and I’ll probably pay attention to that more then the cricket. Footy players get pretty badly bruised from time to time, but they don’t get murdered for their efforts. How about you? Is cynicism overwhelming your enjoyment of the cricket? 2007 world cup, bob woolmer, cynicism, india, ireland, mahendra dhoni, murder, sri lanka, west

Ho-ha-India! Is it ready for Sri Lanka?
2007-03-23 18:27:22
It’s just a matter of hours now before the entire nation comes to a halt, all those cricket crazy India n’s get glued to their TV sets with expecting eyes, staying up all night hoping their team reaches the super eight. It is a crunch game and the opponents their sub continent rivals (Sri Lanka ), millions will be sleepless, wishing time and again for the ‘men in blue’ somehow get through – but hold on, what if they disappoint, do we have the heart to take that, perhaps not. India went into the World Cup as title favorites and noting short would be sufficient for the fanatics here. Considering stats and the recent performances head to head, Indians will surely take heart – India has won 49 of the 94 ODI played between the two nations, with a blistering eight games out of the recent 10. However, the numbers are of least significance as matches are won with team performance on the given day and not by previous stats or team strength on paper. Both sides are well balanced, bu

Bob Woolmer was murdered
2007-03-23 06:18:56

Bob woolmer was murdered by ????
2007-03-25 17:51:16
since the coach of Pakistan Bob woolmer died i have come across to thrilling  news mostly from the indian media as they are taking keen interest in this issue. Time was to pay tribute to Mr Woolmer instead of hot stories. The stories keep on twisting from death to suicide then murder. Who is a Murderer? Bookies, fans or some one else…. Who is this some one else? It might be the body or person who wanted to take advantage of the scenario. Now the question comes who would like to take the advantage… definitely the person who dont like Pakistan…. Now the question arises who dont like Pakistan? The Jamaican authorities should keep in mind this aspect too. This kind of neat murders can only be done through agensies. bookies are very good in fixing the match not killing…. I hope the matter will be resolved amicably by the authorities and deepest sympathies to Bob Woolmer family and Pakistan cricket board. The world have lose a staunch cricket lover.

The Geoffrey Oi!cotts (disGrace on bass; Alan Knott on drums)
2007-03-27 02:23:14
Further to Scott’s post, and Andrew’s piece, comes this example of YouTube at its brilliant, bizarre best. Among the historical gems, a lot of the other videos there are fairly drab’n’dull recollections of fans playing village cricket. Boring. But searching for “cricket” throws up the odd seemingly inexplicable video, such as this: a band called the Geoffrey Oi!cotts. Their MySpace entry reveals the following: Band Members Freddy Skintoft (vocals) W.C. disGrace (bass) A.P.E. sKnott (drums) Devon Malcolm McClaren (guitar) The Dickie Birds (backing troupe and groupies) Influences Yorkshire pride. Sounds Like The thwack of willow on leather on a sunny yorkshire afternoon.. Record Label hahahahahaha What a brilliant image that is. Alan Knott on drums (still equipped with wicketkeeping gloves, and a toothy grin); Devon Malcolm, massive 1980s bottle-top glasses, attached to a Fender and - best of all? - several Dickie Birds, rolling up their sleeves and to
