Bangladesh victory results in Indian exit
2007-03-26 16:37:34
India is finally officially out of the world cup. With a Bangladesh victory over Bermuda, the minnows of world cricket jumped ahead of India to qualify for the super eight. Group B is decided, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to rule the roost. In a rain marred match, Bangladesh won the toss and put Bermuda to bat. As the toss had happened, the clouds burst. The umpires curtailed the match to 41-over a side. The Bermuda slide started in the very first over of their innings, when Stephen Outerbridge hooked wildly at Mashrafe Mortaza and top-edged to Mohammad Rafique at fine leg. Mashrafe Mortaza took his second wicket when Delyone Borden (2), miscued one and was easily taken at mid-off. Captain Irvine Romaine followed soon thereafter trapped lbw for just 11 to left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak. Rain interrupted again. With the match now reduced to 30-over a side, Bermuda was already in doldrums. David Hemp - top scorer against India - went for a duck, cutting Syed Rasel straight to Aftab Ahmed at g

India eliminated from World Cup as Bangladesh beat Bermuda and march ahead
2007-03-26 16:08:41
India lost all chances of playing as Bangladesh won Bermuda in the World Cup group B match held in Trinidad on Sunday. Bangladesh put India out of the World Cup tournament as they qualified for the Super 8 stage in a rain-affected match. The match that began late after heavy rain at the Queen’s Park Oval experienced repeated slashing of the number of overs per side due to intermittent showers. The number of overs set at 41 at the start of the play was revised to 35 overs midway and finally to 21. The boys from Bangladesh hit 96 in 17.3 overs and restricted the Bermudans to 94-9 on a day of constant rain interruptions and marched on into the super eight stage. Bangladesh’s win triggered wild celebrations among their players and cricket fans back home in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh team’s shock win over India last week gave it hope as it only had to avoid defeat against Bermuda to go through to the next stage. With the Bangladesh win, India’s elimination from the World Cu

Lou Vincent injury holds Kiwis on the back foot
2007-03-26 14:11:22
The World Cup has shaped entirely contrary to the expectation of the cricket fans around the globe. Eight teams are set for the flight back home but the ones surely aren’t that had been expected to be going home at this stage. I may sound a typical biased disgusted by Team India’s exit, but even I am one of that crazy-billion that saw its dismal dreams dashed last night. Oh! extremely sorry for swaying from the topic, let me collect my emotions and get back to the task I have at hand. Lethal speedster Shane Bond, a name that sends tremors down the soul of the opposition – unfortunately proved fatal for the Kiwis themselves. There have been numerous instances of self inflicted damage for New Zealand but this one could just be the most brutal that sees the World Cup twig we bit from their grasp. Black Caps have their opening batsman Lou Vincent bid adieu to the World Cup owing to a broken wrist suffered during Sunday’s practice session on being struck by a ball from Bond. N

Hope rides on Bermuda
2007-03-26 00:33:09
For Team India, the only hope floating after their dismal performance against Sri Lanka on March 23, is : if minnows Bermuda beat Bangladesh. After India lost to Sri Lanka in the World Cup, its chances of making it to the Super 8, is almost negligible. However, for die-hard optimistic Indian fans, Team India still has a very slim chance to proceed to the next round, provided the minnows Bermuda manage to beat Bangladesh.

Bob woolmer was murdered by ????
2007-03-25 17:51:16
since the coach of Pakistan Bob woolmer died i have come across to thrilling  news mostly from the indian media as they are taking keen interest in this issue. Time was to pay tribute to Mr Woolmer instead of hot stories. The stories keep on twisting from death to suicide then murder. Who is a Murderer? Bookies, fans or some one else…. Who is this some one else? It might be the body or person who wanted to take advantage of the scenario. Now the question comes who would like to take the advantage… definitely the person who dont like Pakistan…. Now the question arises who dont like Pakistan? The Jamaican authorities should keep in mind this aspect too. This kind of neat murders can only be done through agensies. bookies are very good in fixing the match not killing…. I hope the matter will be resolved amicably by the authorities and deepest sympathies to Bob Woolmer family and Pakistan cricket board. The world have lose a staunch cricket lover.

International cricket still not free from match-fixing
2007-03-25 03:40:24
International cricket is not completely free from match-fixing. It is very difficult to wipe out the match-fixing scandal from the gentleman’s game. England skipper Michael Vaughan has made these comments on the eve of his team’s crucial match against Kenya. While International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a high level investigation to find out whether match-fixing had any connection for the shocking death of Pak coach Bob Woolmer, the comment like this from Michel Vaughan may give new angle to the already complicated death case. Vaughan said, If I’m honest then, yes, I think it (match fixing) does go on. I have never experienced it in my team or players that I’ve played against, but my gut feeling is that there is still some kind of corruption in the game. He went on saying, I haven’t studied it but there are bad things I’ve seen in certain passages of games. It’s very hard to clear the whole of cricket from match-fixing. Before joining Pakistan te

India lost to Sri Lanka, out of World Cup

Bermuda gain a billion fans
2007-03-24 06:03:24
Poor India. Poor, poor old India. As me Martin and Jenny covered West Indies’ comprehensive thrashing of Ireland, we had one eye (sometimes both) on India’s key encounter with Sri Lanka. Now then. However much we try to remain unbiased, neutral and balanced cricket journalists, everyone has a favourite team or enjoys seeing one side struggle. India is one such team. Maybe it’s an unspoken competitiveness we have at Cricinfo between the London office and our guys in Bangalore, but there was no shortage of whooping when India were, well, whooped. Commiserations to Vasu, Sriram, George, Rajesh and co. out there, whose livers will be receiving a severe workout right now. All is not lost, however. India simply need Bermuda to thrash Bangladesh. Unfortunately, that’s about as likely as Ricky Ponting never again uttering “aw, look” at a press conference. The best line came from Ryan at CaribbeanCricket who, moments after Sri Lanka won, said “Bermuda g

Is Chappel scapegoat
2007-03-28 08:31:28
The ouster of the Indian cricket team from the World Cup in the first round has seen the differences in the team come out in open.   In a startling revelation on Tuesday night, veteran journalist Rajan Bala said that coach Greg Chappell was unhappy with the squad chosen for the World Cup.   Chappell had sent an SMS to Bala in response to an article he wrote on February 16.   In the article Bala had written: “He might or might not develop to be the country’s best future batsman, but let it be known that the possibility of his not being fully fit during the World Cup cannot be discounted. It is a risk that is being taken.   Bala had also written that Yuvraj Singh was behaving as if he was a big star.   “The problem with Yuvraj is that he believes he is a star when he is only a rising one,” Bala wrote.   Bala argued that he made the SMS public because the Indian coach was being made a scapegoat for the World Cup debacle.   “I waited till the Indian tea

Locals were not involved in bob woolmer death
2007-03-27 15:13:14
Karachi: Police in Kingston has said that it is “unlikely” that Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer’s killers were Jamaicans. The police have consistently said that they are confident the killer or killers was known to Woolmer because of the fact there was no sign of unforced entry and nothing was stolen. Complete coverage: Woolmer’s death and after “The fact that it is manual strangulation and asphyxiation does not lead to the profile of somebody locally, where you tend to find firearms or knives as the favoured weapons,” Deputy Commissioner of Jamaican Police and former Scotland Yard officer Mark Shields told Sky News. “You can never dismiss anything, but at the moment it seems highly unlikely a Jamaican has walked off the street, gone up to the 12th floor in a secure lift, gone along to his room, got into his room without any sign of forced entry, murdered him and then not stolen anything at all,” he said. Shields, however, refused to dismiss the i

Who will rid me of this turbulant lawyer?
2007-03-27 01:20:40
The ICC has stepped in to prohibit cricket clips of the World Cup being available online via YouTube. Andrew Miller skewers this incredible piece of stupidity here. I’m just left gasping at how ICC’s powerbrokers have managed to get themselves so ‘out of touch’ that they thought this was a good idea. Short of actually prohibiting broadcasting of the games, they could not have made a worse decision. Imagine an attempt by ICC to prohibit cricket blogs or newspaper coverage or forums and you have an idea of how stupid this is. Malinga stars in Lanka’s defeat to Proteas
2007-03-29 14:18:16
Who would have possible thought that Sri Lanka and South Africa would relive the exhilaration that the sides did when the two had met in the preceding quadrennial extravaganza – at least I did not, considering it a one sided affair for the Proteas. However, it should have been evident from the very kickoff, when Pollock was mauled around the park in the opening spell – and still Sri Lanka loosing the two openers in quick succession with the scoreboard barely reading 50. If the beginning wasn’t enough to excite – the match in the way it enfolded at the very end surely hovels to the top as the best in the World Cup thus far. Despite immaculate bowling in the deck from the peacock colored haired ruffian, Lasith Malinga claiming a record four wickets in four deliveries to become only the fourth individual to claim a World Cup hat-trick, the Lankan’s were unable to defend 209 they had set – losing out with a wicket. Just consider what the condition was when the Malinga devast

Kevin Pieterson in top of the ladder at ICC rankings
2007-03-28 18:24:42
He has uncanny batting technique, but one thing for sure he knows how to make use of willow in hand. Yes you guessed it right! We are talking about England batsman Kevin Pieterson who has attained the number one ICC ranking in the batsman category of one day cricket. This means that he has become only the third England player, after opening batsman Marcus Trescothick and Allan Lamb, to lead the rankings for one-day batsmen. England who is struggling at the World Cup both on and off the field would hope that the best ODI batsman at present lifts the spirit of whole team. Though, he has scored half centuries against New Zealand and Kenya in the group stage but big century is still missing and that is what you need from your big players. If England has any ambition of beating the likes of Australia, South Africa and Srilanka, Pieterson has to fire. The best part about Pieterson as a batsman is his attacking ability. If he is in form, he can slaughter any attack in the world and can wi

West Indies has minimal chance in the rain-postponed match against Australia
2007-03-28 15:23:49
West Indies won the toss and elected to field first – and in a rain interrupted contest got the battering of a lifetime from Australia ’s devastating opener Mathew Hayden who scored 158 runs, highest by any Australian in the World Cup. The pitch covers were brought upon in the innings break when the Oz’s had packed themselves in the dressing room post mauling the West Indies ’ bowling for 322 for 6. Owing to bad light and rain, the match officials decided to call of the days play and postpone it sending the West Indies’ run chase into an overnight delay. As it is, 332 is a mammoth total in all condition anyhow – and it looks a distant reality for the hosts – Few reasons: • West Indies kickoff their batting at 9 in the morning – losing out on the advantage of batting later in the day, for which the crucial decision of bowling first was taken. • West Indies have been the most vulnerable batting order always, whether it was in ’75 and ’79 or in 2k7. • Austr

Is this really the best England can do?
2007-03-31 06:24:38
It never fails to amaze me reading the contrasting opinions from our feedbackers at Cricinfo while covering these one-dayers, especially with England in such limp form. Of the 1000 or so emails, a fair chunk criticised us for our anti-England stance, accusing us of racism, bias toward Ireland and whatever else. What game were they watching? The one we were watching was between a feisty, energetic team full of lively promise and intent. The other was England at their timid best. I defy anyone to tell me their performance today was anything better than average. They were half asleep; at times careless; more often than not timid or cautious in their intent and generally lacking authority. This is not, I assure you, to demean Ireland. They have exceptional ability, but class will invariably out - as it did today. The manner of the victory was so mundane, so unimpressive that it was hard to distinguish who was the minnow. Why bat first on that pitch? Boyd Rankin, Ireland’s towering fa

West Indies lose to New Zealand by seven wickets
2007-03-30 20:21:13
In their second match of the Super Eight stage, the hosts West Indies lost to New Zealand in a low scoring match. In a one - sided World Cup super eight match, New Zealand thrashed West Indies by 7 wickets. The second consecutive defeat for the Caribbean players put them on the verge of world cup exit. On the other hand, Stephen Fleming led his side from the front and scored a brilliant 45, which laid the foundation for the rest of the batsmen. Scott Styris remained unbeaten with a convincing half century (80). Craig McMillan’s smashing 33 not out was no less. Shane Bond, Daniel Vettori and Jacob Oram all took three wickets to dismiss the West Indies for a paltry 177, only Chris Gayle (44) and Brian Lara (37) contributing. The innings started with Chanderpaul going in the 8th over when the score read 14-1. Sarawan followed without contributing much. Once, Lara got out, the stage was set for a debacle for the hosts. Though, Daren Powell struck twice early to give the hosts hope of

Australia routs West Indies by 103 Runs
2007-03-29 18:47:30
The Australia n cricketing juggernaut once again rolled over the feeble West Indian batsmen. Lara’s brilliant 77 was undoubtedly a great captain’s knock. But, the McGrath and Brad Hogg combination demolished the entire batting order of the Caribbeans. The kangaroos seem to clinch a convincing step towards another World Cup glory, this time in the Calypso. In this rain-interrupted and first to be held in the reserve day World Cup match, Australia put a formidable 323 victory target before Lara’s army. A resounding 158 by ever dependable Mathew Hayden was well supported by Clarke and Watson. This first Super Eight match for Australia was more of individual brilliance than team effort. The convincing victory came with 103 runs. Lara’s genius half – century and Ramdin’s 52 run went in vain without able support from other Caribbean. These two innings of artful drives and neat cuts failed to stop the Australian bowling machine led by McGrath and Brad Hogg. The entire Australian

Choking Boks battle past Slinger Malinga
2007-03-29 04:11:27
Oh the Boks have done it again! 206 for 5 chasing 210…they’re currently 208 for 9! Malinga took four in four balls (spread over two overs) oh, bugger, South Africa have edged it. Robin Peterson has whalloped Malinga for four to win by a single wicket. What remarkable bottling boks they are. Battling boks, I suppose I should say… Can’t remember who was on comms at the time, but they did a fine job at CI 48.2 Malinga to Peterson, FOUR, Peterson does it for SA with a edge past the slip. Fullish, outside off stump, Peterson drives, gets a outside edge and it runs down to third man boundary. SA have won. They choked at the end but have pulled it off. Peterson jumps in the air, pumps his fist and then smashes the stumps down at the other end. Immediately apologises! Worth reading the commentary for the last five wickets. What a match. 2007 world cup, lasith malinga, robin peterson, south africa, sri lanka

Are we going to miss Australia’s dominance?
2007-03-29 03:10:02
This has been nagging at the back of my mind for a while, so am just penning it down before it disppears completely. Someone was recently talking about the West Indies, and how the World Cup could provide the spark needed to relight passion in the country. Fledgling interest, and so forth. Everyone, so he said, loves the West Indies and wants them to succeed - wants them to be back on top of the world, like they were in the 1970s and 80s. Back then, I imagine there was a similar feeling of foreboding toward West Indies as there is nowadays for teams facing Australia . They steamrollered the opposition, trampling all over them like bastards. Like Australia have been doing for the past 12 or so years. But, if and when this Australia side collapse into an arthritic heap, will we mourn them? Will we, in 10 years, have the same feeling that we now have for the West Indies: wanting Australia back to their best? Not bloody likely. I will dance from the rooftops when some of their ageing limbs

World Cup: Australia in top form, beat Bangladesh by ten wickets
