Sunday Running Game Thread: Cubs vs. Angels 3:05 CST
2007-03-18 20:16:25
I'm back from my weekend of debauchery, green beer, and drowing my sorrows over the Hoosiers loss in something called the "O.C. Cocktail" at ESPN Zone. A big thanks to Max Power for a) keeping our children alive for over 48 hours ALL BY HIMSELF, and b) doing the Friday and Saturday game threads. Now then, let's proceed. Z takes the mound today and is apparently really happy to be doing so: Z's unfortunate opponent today? John Lackey. A google search for John Lackey turns up this photo, which seems wrong: A second search turns up this guy, who looks only slightly better, most likely due to the lack of the old man beard: Today's lineup, via Bruce Miles from some other site: Soriano, CF Theriot, 2B Floyd, DH Ramirez, 3B Ward, 1B Murton, LF Pie, RF Blanco, C Izturis, SS Zambrano, P The game will be broadcast on CSN for those of us lucky enough to have it, as well as FSN West. Of course, mlb.tv is always happy to take your money in exchange for a small grainy image, so they're b

Looks like the Fonz is hungry for some real baseball. Lou says a bunch of stuff we wanted to hear Though not necessarily the part about Jacque batting second sometimes. This is now the Lou Piniella era with the Cubs and you pretty much can forget about giving up outs. There will be no "small" in his ball. Piniella believes in the offense going on the offensive. "No, no, no," Piniella said when asked about sacrificing in the first inning on a cold day. "I like to bunt more, believe it or not, when we have a lead so we can add on. I like those situations better than any other time. "I've never really bunted early. I'm going to run, hit-and-run, steal, double steal, but I don't like the idea of bunting early in a game. Late in the game with a 3-2 lead, 4-2 lead, you get the first couple of runners on, you're looking to tack on, I like the bunt then." Dempster, Wood, Walks Shockingly, Cub batters have take 66 walks this spring, Cub pitchers allowed only 57 The best line in the piece:

Gamethread 3/17 -- Cubs vs. Padres: Luck of the Irish?
2007-03-17 19:30:58
I know, Greg, I know.  We all feel that way right now.  We miss you, if that helps. I'm sure Greg is just as disturbed as the rest of us with Prior's outing yesterday.  Unless you choose to believe Carrie Muskat and some unnamed AP writer, Mark Prior will soon look like this: How the mighty have fallen in just two short years.  A quick search of the news articles on Mr. Prior's minor-league start yesterday is universally negative.  Sure, he is still young, and sure he still has an ERA of 3.51 even with some "less productive outings" in the past couple of years.  However, this appears to be a crossroads for Prior, and it's not clear where those roads lead....other than Iowa. This leads us to today's throwdown.  The Cubs return to HoHoKam to face the San Diego Padres , and you can begin your viewing pleasure at 3:05 p.m. CDT -- live on WGN and MLB.TV, or you can listen with Gameday Audio. The aforementioned Maddux will take the hill against...uh..

We Need Some "D," Does That Mean Pie?
2007-03-17 17:54:29
Phil Rogers in today's dead tree edition: Something just has to give. That something just might wind up being the Cubs' reluctance to to open the season with Felix Pie on the roster. After the White Sox won a semi-compelling Cactus League game in the ninth inning on a blistering Friday here, Lou Piniella finally arrived at the inevitable conclusion. "Truthfully," Piniella said, an almost apologetic look on his face, "we have to play better defense. We can talk about how good of a ballclub we have in Chicago, [but] we'd better be able to catch the [ball] better than we did today. You have to help the pitchers out." Pie, who was playing center field with Alfonso Soriano staying back in Mesa, certainly did his share, as he usually does. Phil does on to outline the Cubs current outfield dilemma, then states: Here's a solution: aggressively market Jones, even offering to pay much of the two years left on his salary to facilitate a deal, and welcome Pie to the big leagues. Normally I

Gamethread 3/16: Cubs vs White Sox (3:05pm CDT): A Pale Imitation
2007-03-16 18:51:05
I thought about subtitling this "Angels vs. Devils", as it could work on two levels: (1) Cubs vs. Sox (duh), and (2) Angel Guzman is pitching today. However, I thought I should acknowledge that I'm pinch-hitting (that's a baseball term, gravedigger) for thisyearcub today, who is busy watching college cheerleaders (possibly some basketball), and, from my understanding, drinking heavily.  I shan't try to duplicate his threads (as I will merely disappoint), nor will I attempt to give you Keys to the Game like cubsfan2883 (as that would disappoint even more).  Rather, I shall just fill space so you all can successfully kill a Friday afternoon.  Aim low, and you can always reach your goals.  You should probably write that down. Today the Cubs face the White Sox, in a game sure to be remembered for hours.  According to Bruce Miles, Michael Wuertz said he planned to pitch against the White Sox today.   What Bruce Miles didn't tell you is that Wuertz also re

Miller Time. So simple, yet so highly appropriate. Why didn't we think of that? We're going to have to decide on a nickname at some point, because it looks like our good buddy Wade, who we all heard last year would never get his velocity back, has clawed his way back into the starting lineup. Gordon Wittenmyer: TEMPE, Ariz. -- After his first start of spring training, the guy on the long and grinding road back from shoulder surgery sounded almost defiant in the face of what looked like long odds. ''I'm a starter, and I'm going to be a starter for a while as far as I'm concerned,'' Cubs right-hander Wade Miller said that day 2½ weeks ago. Turns out he was right. Barring some kind of major meltdown or health setback when he makes his fourth start this afternoon against the Seattle Mariners, the 30-year-old Miller -- who hasn't pitched a full season since 2003 -- is expected to be named the Cubs' fifth starter this week. Coming into this season, I really didn't think Mill

GoDaddy.com's Gamethread 3/19: Cubs vs Mariners 3:05 CST AND Brewers vs Cubs 3:05 EST

Well,Well, I hope the weekend off has refreshed you, as I suspect many of you are just now starting to sober up from your St, Patrick's Day weekend.  This thread is brought to you in part by Go Daddy.com.. Which is just a cheap excuse to post this: The new official spokesperson of the Cubsfan2883's Game Thread, Candace Michaels The Cubs play two games today, one against the Mariners and one against the Brewers .  The race for the fifth spot will hopefully be a little clearer after today's games as Wade Miller will take the hill for the North Siders.  In the other, and btw far more interesting game, The Cubs will face off against the Brewers.  Why is a game against the Brewers that much more interesting? Because my heros and yours, Sean's Marshall and Gallagher will both take the hill for the Cubbies.  Gallagher will get his first Spring Training Start for the Cubs.. Marshall is set to pitch his first game in relief.

Monday Off-Base Diary: Injury Edition
2007-03-19 14:00:00
On second thought, you'll probably just make matters worse. Don't worry about it. It's funny because it's true. Wait. It's not funny. Let me rephrase: It's sad because it's true: Arizona winters may be a relaxing experience for many people seeking refuge from the cold, but nothing can be further from the truth when it comes to oft-injured Kerry Wood. In fact, the Cubs' paper-mache pitcher has been shut down once again with a right triceps strain after experiencing windburn from a slight breeze in Mesa. "I knew this was going to happen," Wood said of another injury. "But I didn't think it would come so soon and so easily. There were 5 MPH gusts out there that had the potential to end my career." Even though Wood's successes this spring were limited, many delusional Cubs fans--and general manager Jim Hendry-- held out hope the pitcher will be the catalyst for a World Series-contending team. "I've always said that if both Kerry and Mark [Prior] remained healthy and at top-per

Lou Gets a Taste of What It's Like To Be Us
2007-03-19 04:13:38
"Hell if I know. All I know is that someone had better start catching SOMETHING around here." Poor Lou. He's finally come face to face with the realization that we don't have the greatest defense in the world. Or in the National League Central. Or even in the bottom half of the NL Central. It's almost as if our team has been prevented from taking infield practice due to corporate sponsors hogging the field or something. Two weeks left in the desert, and Cubs manager Lou Piniella hopes what he is seeing is a mirage. All those misplayed balls and those 19 errors in the first 16 Cactus League games can't be real, can they? ''Too many routine balls that you say, 'Yeah!' when they hit them, then all of a sudden we don't make the plays,'' Piniella said. ''I'll tell you this, I'm going to put the best club I can defensively on the field because that's the way you win baseball games. ''It has nothing to do with frustration; it has to do with reality. And the reality is i

To Jacque? Or Not To Jacque? (And Other Roster Grumblings)
2007-03-21 00:31:51
That's really the question, you guys. Let's face facts: much like Hendry was fascinated with collecting sub-par second basemen last season, he seems to have an unnatural desire to hoard as many mediocre outfielders as possible this year. Soriano, Jacque, Murton, Floyd, Ward, Pagan, Pie, Coats. . . there are just too many. In the mind of all but a few, human batter's box Jacque Jones is the odd man out. And look, *I* don't want Jacque to be traded. He seems like a nice guy, he can actually hit when he. . . uh.  . . hits, and he looks really great in that shirt up there. And Bruce Miles doesn't want him to go, either: A report in New York Newsday on Sunday quoted one American League official as saying the Cubs are "continuing to try to foist Jacque Jones off on someone." Those in the know say a trade of Jones isn't out of the realm of possibility. At this point, it's hard to say how trading Jones either makes sense or makes the Cubs better. Even though Jones still has issue

Opening Day is 13 days away.  Keep in mind that then the stats count.. and I really hope that the Cubs don't set me up for the type of year they had last year.. As of this time the Rockies haven't said who will start for them. Seeing as how they're taking this whole faith-based team concept too far, I'd say maybe they plan to start

Tony, Tony, Tony has done it again!
2007-03-22 14:15:25
This was too great not to pass up and put on the front. Not that I'm taking pleasure in the happenings, because I'm sure getting a DUI does suck, but, hey, that's why you don't drink and drive. Even if you are the Cardinal master. And especially don't fall asleep. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving after police said they found him asleep inside his running sport utility vehicle at a stop light and smelling of alcohol. LaRussa, 62, gave two breath samples and was determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida's legal driving limit is 0.08 percent. Undercover officers first saw LaRussa's SUV partially in an intersection around midnight and not moving despite several green lights, police said. Officers knocked on the vehicle's window and LaRussa did not initially respond. The SUV was in drive and running, with LaRussa's foot on the brake, police said. When he eve

Bruce Miles Gives Us Hope
2007-03-21 15:46:24
This is going to make it a little easier for me to sleep tonight: Matt Murton is probably the people's choice when it comes to left field for the Cubs. And the people probably will get to see a lot of Murton early in the season. Manager Lou Piniella admitted Tuesday that he'll probably have to ease oft-injured Cliff Floyd into the lineup in April. Floyd did not make the trip to Tucson for the Cubs' 4-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies. During Monday's victory over the Mariners, Floyd committed an error on a flyball he lost in the sun and had a rough time chasing down a hit to the gap. The Cubs delayed Floyd's Cactus League season because of the heel surgery he underwent last October after his season with the Mets. Floyd has 5 hits in 15 at-bats in five games. (snip) Piniella said the Cubs will not keep Floyd back in Arizona at the end of spring but that they may let him get 10-12 at-bats on some days in minor-league games before spring training ends. Yes! Give him some time to get c

Depressing Hump Day Quote of The Week: "My winning philosophy is to have a strong mix of youth along with old fossils who strike out a ton and never take a walk," Hendry explained. "If healthy, I expect Floyd and DeRosa to get around 800 to 900 ABs between them, but there will still be some swings to go around for the kids. If not, we'll just use Matt and Ryan as our bullpen catchers." I wish I could laugh at that. Speaking of laughing, some classic (that means "rerun") Onion: Steinbrenner Names Johnny Damon As New Yankee Scapegoat NEW YORK-Continuing a Yankee tradition that dates back to the teams of the early '80s, owner George Steinbrenner formally appointed recently signed centerfielder Johnny Damon as the team's new scapegoat. "This position comes with a lot of responsibility, as the scapegoat will be held personally accountable for every loss this season," Steinbrenner said in a statement Tuesday. "Even though he is new to the city and organization, and he is coming over fro

Salutations! For the few people who missed me, I'm back to serve you this weekend after some good times at the NCAA Tournament and other shenanigans during this slow month at work. For everyone else who could care less, I say, F You Jobu! Thanks to Max Power and cubbiejulie for the fill-in last weekend while the Heels were rolling through the first two rounds. Here's hoping they get past the Trojans tonight. Anyway, onto baseball. Fresh off Mark "The Miracle" Prior's Matrix outing, today's game against the Giants also will be the first appearance for Kid K since his strained right tricep. Here's Wood, channeling Aaron Lewis of Staind, all he's missing is all the candles around him. "It's been awhile, since Prior and I, were both healthy, And it's been awhile, since we both played, a whole year." Big Z gets the start today, and hopefully can limit the walks along with trying not to cause panic attacks by Cubs fans as he runs the basepaths. The game, which features southpaw No

I normally don't go in for fruity girl drinks, but I have to pay homage to the O.C. Cocktail at ESPN Zone. I'm not ever sure what's in it: coconut rum, creme de banana, chambord, pineapple juice, orange juice. . . something like that. All I know is that it tastes like Hawaiian Punch and knocks you on your ass. Good stuff. The Heckler has more details on the Delicate Genius's shame: Early Thursday morning, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was found asleep at the wheel by Jupiter, Fla., police. The policeman smelled alcohol and ordered the skipper of the reigning World Series champs to complete a field sobriety test. Always the strategist, La Russa tried to get out of the jam by performing two pitching changes. "I asked the suspect to recite the alphabet while standing on one leg," said Sgt. Josh Spenard of the Jupiter Police Dept. "Before he began the exercise he took out his cell phone, and without dialing a number, asked, 'is Looper ready?'" Spenard also followed prot

Confused, unsure, a little scared. Oh Buttercup, what will become of you? Will you start the year in cold, windswept, godforsaken Iowa? Will you be left behind? In Arizona I mean, not in the Kirk Cameron sense. Will you be relegated to the all-too-familiar DL? For those of us who were stuck in polyamorous witch trials all afternoon and missed the big performance, a nice little recap: PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mark Prior had his best outing of the spring. Whether he'll start the season on the Chicago Cubs' active roster is still unclear. With the rotation pretty much set a week before the Cubs break camp and with Wade Miller the top candidate to be the fifth starter, there might not be a spot for Prior. At least not right away. "He threw the ball better, that's the most important thing. A really nice step forward for him," manager Lou Piniella said after Prior's four-inning outing Thursday in a 1-0 loss to the San Diego Padres. "I think the idea of not rushing him, giving him time,

The game thread is late?!? Oh no, that's because I've had to deal with internet connectivity issues all morning.  I figured "Why do it last night when you can drink a few Leinie's and relax instead of feeding the masses loads of incoherent analysis/humor?"  So I did just that, and then I woke up...and my eye hurt.  Don't ask why, but my contact must have gotten something in it. . .I was crying. But then I got to thinking, maybe it wasn't because I had left my contacts in overnight and something had gotten in it -- maybe it was because the stress related to Mark Prior pitching for the Cubs had manifested itself in the form of my eye swelling shut. I mean, this sort of stuff happens all of the time, right?  Mark obviously looks bad this spring, and so rather than looking forward to typing a diary about how Mark was going to rip the Pads to shreds, I was forced to write about how I think Mark will stay in Arizona on the DL,  Face it this year... Mark suck

Here we go. The season hasn't even started, and already people are complaining about others getting special treatment. This time, I'm not too happy to inform you that the whining comes from our very own beloved Kid K. Paul Sullivan: Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are ready to start the season with the Cubs. At least they think so. Whether manager Lou Piniella agrees remains to be seen. One day after Prior returned from a 12-day absence with his best outing of the spring, Wood pitched a scoreless inning against the Giants on Friday in his first game since suffering a triceps injury 12 days ago. Does Wood plan on lobbying Piniella for a spot on the Opening Day roster? "My job is to go out and get guys out," Wood replied. "I have three more chances to go out and get guys out." But that would give Wood only seven innings of work, and the reason Piniella is considering keeping Wood back is he won't have enough innings to be ready by the end of spring. "Again, I'm just going to worry about g

Per the words of Slater from Dazed and Confused, these two teams will reacquaint themselves after the Cubbies and Big Z put it all over Rick Moranis and the Little Giants on Friday. The one difference about today's game? One Barry Lamar Bonds shall be in the lineup. Now, much is to be said about Barry, but you know what? I'm getting sick of it all. Either get your crap together , Feds, and bring an indictment or let's just move on. It's getting very tiresome. Let him get the record and move on. A-Rod will break it eventually anyway. That being said, if someone hits this guy today, I certainly won't be upset. Man Law gets the start today for the Cubs, and needs a good outing to solidify a rotation spot. Just like myself, maybe he should quit drinking with his buddies and focus more on work. For the Giants, the Cubs will see Barry "Moneybags" Zito. A lot of us thought maybe we should have gone after Zito, but what fun would have that been? It's much better to hinge the season on o

Kerry Wood throws a scoreless inning today and seems to be growing more comfortable with his new relief role with each passing day. Novoa has been banished to Elba. . I mean Iowa. Church of PECOTA: Zambrano Close to Signing Extension
2007-03-26 06:17:34
Those fine number-crunching enthusiasts over at Baseball Prospectus have apparently gotten the drop on everyone with this little tidbit concerning everybody's favorite hotheaded Venezuelan pitcher. Look for the Chicago Cubs and right-hander Carlos Zambrano to agree on a five-year contract extension this week worth somewhere in $80 million-$90 million range. While myself and a small contingent of others have been pushing such heresies as trading Zambrano or just letting him walk in light of what was believed to be a far too exorbitant price tag (Zito money: 7 yr/126MM), 5/80-90 isn't too terrible if BP has gotten this one right (and they tend to, when they do dabble in rumor-mongering, hit the proverbial nail on its self-evident head, see Will Carroll's prescience in all its glory concerning Mr. Prior's shoulder problem circa 2006). And it is a contract that compares reasonably well (if it's at the 80, which it probably isn't) with the one notorious Houston Astros douche bag Roy

Hey Kerry. I know you didn't expect to find me in here, of all places, but let's talk, shall we?   Remember yesterday? When you were all "Why is everyone being so mean to me? No one has pitched back-to-back games, so why is everyone focused on me? And Lou is a big meanie for saying that I might not be ready to start the season." Remember that? And we were like "Oh, come now, Kerry. You're so NOT like every other pitcher out there?" And you like yelled at a bunch of reporters for singling you out and then stomped off? Remember? And then remember how today, you finally went out and pitched in back-to-back games, just like you wanted to? And remember how you gave up three runs in one inning and pretty much blew the game? Yeah. So maybe not so much whining about how unfair the world is and more practicing. Look, Kerry. The cold, hard truth is that you're NOT like other pitchers. You slipped and got hurt in a hot tub AND were out a few days with a strained triceps, and we looked

OK, so I've been noticing everyone's been getting pretty fed up with spring training. We collectively managed to mind control (D-Bo style) Sweet Lou into sending Novoa down (Yay!) but forgot about moving some of those vibes over Cedeno's way (Boo!). It's really starting to stretch out, besides the whole Prior/Wood saga. So, to make things fun, I'll be doing a live blog of today's game, pitting the Cubs against the L.A. of Anaheim in Orange County of the Golden State Angels . Gamethread 3/27: Cubs vs Royals: A National Day of Mourning
2007-03-27 19:00:00
Rich Hill takes the mound today, but that isn't why we are in a national day of mourning.  We would be in a day of mourning due to the annual placing Wood on the DL roster move that was announced last night.  Every year we go into camp expecting a clean bill of health, and every year he ends up letting us down. It's like that movie Final Destination: we see it happening before it happens, and everyone knows it's going to happen, but when it comes down to stopping it from happening there's not a thing anyone can do about it. It seems like every time we get a good arm, he ends up getting injured shortly thereafter.  Maybe there is a such thing as a curse; then again, maybe the Cubs just have a flawed team philosophy on how to handle their young arms.  Either or..

We can finally relax. As far as I can tell, the earth sits firmly on its axis, the dead are not rising, and dogs and cats are NOT living together. Oh, and we don't have to worry about seeing things like this anymore, either: Chicago Heat? Hahahahahahahahahaha. Indeed. Paul Sullivan reports today that Prior will be joining his BFF on the DL. Manager Lou Piniella said the Cubs were not expecting anything out of Kerry Wood or Mark Prior this spring and that "it would probably be a long shot to have both of them ready by Opening Day." Prior is expected to be placed on the disabled list for the ninth time in his six-year career. If Prior doesn't make the team and is deemed healthy, the Cubs could send him to Triple-A Iowa while still paying his $3.75 million salary. I see. Yet he's still going to start on Wednesday. I have grown weary of Spring Training, so I'm going to hope he goes out there and strikes out ten just so we have something else to talk about. In the interim, however, yo

Experiencing tightness in your chest? Shortness of breath? Pain in your arms or other extremeties? You have one week to get to your doctor and stock up on Lipitor before the season begins, lest you wind up like this: Today's game might have been a perfect example of what we can expect from our Cubbies this season: poor pitching, poor defense, and a decent offense that has the potential to make the rest of it not matter. In other words, get ready: Jason Marquis was about like we all thought he would be, not getting out of the fifth inning after giving up 7 hits, 4 runs, and 2 HRs. Neal Cotts made it through all of an inning and a third, giving up a hit and a run. Porn Name then came in to give up a run and three hits. Howry and Erye finally stopped the bleeding, each retiring the side 1-2-3 in one inning of work each. The offense was a completely different story: In midseason form, Derrek Lee doubled twice, driving home two runs, and singled, scoring on Aramis' Ramirez's double
