The Homerun Record
2007-03-18 17:01:41
Barry Bonds hit his fourth spring training homerun Friday against Colorado. It seems that the typical U.S. baseball fan lost all interest in his homerun total, since Bonds passed the sacred cow at 714. The focus now seems to be an investigation, hoping to get rid of him. Bonds stands 22 homeruns short of the home run record set by Hank Aaron (755). Where’s the furor, uproar & outrage that accompanied the approach to the non-record held by someone who didn’t even play against competition?

NBA - Totalitarian Regime?
2007-03-16 18:34:51
NBA officials assessed Kobe Bryant a flagrant foul after reviewing tape of a game last week against Philadephia. A foul so flagrant it didn’t draw any notice of the officials during the game. Retroactive fines? When did that start? Laker’s Coach Phil Jackson said: “It shouldn’t even have been a flagrant one,” he said Tuesday. “That’s crazy. That’s a vendetta. They have a witch hunt going on. It’s nuts. Guys riding somebody. Everybody does that in this league. It’s just becoming a witch hunt now.” Bryant received two one game suspensions earlier in the season for fouls. At least those weren’t retroactive. Jackson was fined $50,000. What is it with professional sports leagues: MLB, NFL, & especially the N.B.A.(the dress code, suspensions for responding to insults from fans-why don’t they reign in the audience?) and prohibitions against criticism or dissent of any kind? In 1996, the N.B.A. suspende

The Tennis Channel Open…March ‘07

James got robbed before I showed up.. Marat Safin, TTC Open Semifinals, 03/03/07 Evgeni Korolev, TTC Open Semifinals, 03/03/07 Great weather. I was surprised to find both elimination & round robin matches taking place. I had thought it would be either or. I found this bit of nonsense: • A 32-player round robin draw consisting of a 16-player “play-off” with the 8 winners joining 16 other players to make up the 8 groups of 3 players. Each player will then play two guaranteed matches in the round robin stage. The winner from each group will advance to the knockout round (quarterfinals), and then will play out the tournament per a traditional single-elimination format. /media/pressreleases06 It seems a bit complicated.. James on the Round Robin Issue
2007-03-06 21:33:22
Press conference, Pacific Life Open, March 9, 2007 Q. … tell me what you think the future of Round Robin should be? JAMES BLAKE: My personal opinion, they shouldn’t be anymore. Leave it for the Master’s Cup and that’s it. Diplomatically I’d say, you know, we’ll revisit it, we’ll talk but I don’t want it anymore. It’s too many. There’s too many variables. There’s too many possibilities of matches that could turn into basically exhibitions or after one set they could turn into exhibitions. And, you know, it’s — I don’t want to see more Round Robin tournaments that get decided on who goes through by a rule as opposed to by who wins a match. And I just want to go out there — and even with the scenario of going out to win by a certain score, it’s not natural. I mean, you wouldn’t tell a basketball team to go out and cover a line, like a Vegas spread. You’d tell them to go out and w

Tiger Praises Roger
2007-03-22 02:50:46
“It’s pretty neat when you have probably the most dominant athlete on the planet out there in your gallery,” Woods (AP) said of number one ranked tennis player Roger Federer, after the golfer’s practice round for the CA Championship. Woods will attempt to defend the World Golf Championship in Miami, while Federer begin his defense of the Sony Ericsson Open title, on nearby Key Biscayne, for the third straight year. But before giving such a high honor, Tiger might consider who Roger’s been playing. The top tennis player needs some competition. Roger might end up being the Babe Ruth of tennis, putting up records against players of mostly one color. As Chris Rock says, “A sport without black people isn’t a sport — that’s just a game.”

Arthur Ashe Tennis Center Renovation Complete
2007-04-02 15:46:49
Great news for tennis in South Africa. From AP: JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The tennis center in Soweto founded by Arthur Ashe 30 years ago was reopened by his widow, Jeanne Ashe, on Saturday after a two-year, $620,000 renovation. Ashe and former tennis promoter Owen Williams combined to complete the center in 1977 in Jabavu, but it was never maintained and fell into disrepair. The goal of the new Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre “is for Soweto to produce its own Arthur Ashe,” said Ian Smith, CEO of the South African Tennis Association. Ashe was the first black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. During the dedication ceremony, Jeanne Ashe said her husband had started the center as “one small beacon of light amid the darkness and far-reaching shadows of apartheid.” “Fourteen years after Arthur’s death the reopening of this center is probably seen as important at a local and national level, but I can assure you it is a victory whose context is tr

Peer Gains Noteriety
2007-04-08 21:09:39
From Fast Transcripts: Q. What has life been like for you since the Australian Open in Israel? SHAHAR PEER: In Israel? Q. Yes, what’s it been like? SHAHAR PEER: I was there after Tokyo after the tournament in Australia, and it was not very easy. I wasn’t really ready for everything. It was a pretty big thing after the tournament in Australia. But I think next time I will come back, I will get used to it and I will know how to handle it. They support me and they are very nice to me, but I need to be ready how to react to the people. It’s not that easy, and I have to enjoy it. Q. What do you mean? Can you be more specific? SHAHAR PEER: Actually, everybody knows me. There is no one person that you know you cannot say in Israel my name and doesn’t know who I am. So you know, I’m more popular there. Wherever I go they know me, so I don’t have too much time for myself when I’m home. Wherever I go with my friends, my family, so maybe to stay more ho

Charges Dropped In Duke Case
2007-04-12 16:46:28
North Carolina State Attorney General Roy Cooper, dropped remaining charges against Duke Lacrosse players accused of rape last year. Durham County, North Carolina, district attorney, Michael B. Nifong, took himself off the case in January, after receiving an ethics complaint from the North Carolina State Bar for making false and inflammatory statements which prejudiced the rights of the accused — an unprecedented action against a prosecutor in the middle of a case. But aren’t inflammatory statements part of the prosecutor’s trade? Remember the Kobe Bryant case? Michael Jackson? Was this some sort of tactic organized by forces in the state wanting to protect wealthy universities, and/or their students? But Mr. Nifong botched the case, putting together a photo line up for the victim which violated state laws by not including photos of people who could not be possible suspects. He also failed to interview the accused directly, relying on police interviews. A prel

The Grand Slam
2007-04-11 23:44:52
The ‘Grand Slam’ is a feat accomplished by few players: Donald Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) are the only two men to have done it, while Margaret Court (1970), Maureen Connolly (1953) and Steffi Graf (1988). Andre Agassi is the only male tennis player to accomplish the career Slam in the Open era. No man has even won four consecutive Slams in the Open era. Roger Federer has again the chance to do one or both by winning this year’s French Open, “the world’s greatest clay court tournament.” His win at the Australian Open in January was his third Slam victory in a row, and the French would be the fourth. Some observers point out that Federer’s early exit from the Sony Ericsson Open could give him a better shot at this year’s one. It would be a remarkable feat to win all four consecutive Grand Slams on four different surfaces. Among current players, only Roger Federer is in position to do such a thing.  He holds these three: Fr

Marat Safin © Getty “I think it was surprising for me that I could play such good tennis,” said Safin. “I was injured for a couple of days, I couldn’t practise because of the blisters, so it was pretty amazing. I was so confident, for some reason. I felt I was going to win, and with such confidence I felt there was no chance it would go five sets.” Asked if this triumph will jump start a slow start to the season (9-6), including two second round losses at the two Masters Series events, Safin said: “Unfortunately it didn’t go my way the last three months, but now I think I a have chance.”

The Australian Open-Rebound Ace In 1972, The Australian Tennis Federation decided to change the venue of the event every year, with Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and even New Zealand taking turns to host the tournament. In 1983, the Australian Open set up home in Kooyong, Melbourne, where it began to earn the respect of the tennis-playing world until its move in 1988 to Flinders Park. Grass courts made way for hard Rebound Ace surfaces, and in 1997, Flinders Park was renamed Melbourne Park. Rebound Ace, manufactured by Rebound Ace® Sports Pty Ltd, is a cushioned tennis hardcourt comprised of layers of polyurethane rubber, fiberglass, and other materials on top of an asphalt base. The fact that surface becomes sticky when it overheats has been cause for concern for many players.
