Evgeny Najer wins World Open Title
0000-00-00 00:00:00
While I wouldn't call the World Open a 'supertournament' it does attract several of the world's better players. This year was no exception and a Grand Prize split four ways is proof enough. The grand prize winners consisted of Evgeny Najer, Negi Parmijaran, Lubomir Ftacnik and Alexander Moiseenko. Najer and Negi had the better tiebreak and played a rapid game to decide the title. Here's the game

Leko wins Dortmund 2008!
0000-00-00 00:00:00
GM Peter Leko has won the Dortmund Supertournament! The most interesting part of this event has been the spectacular way in which Vladimir Kramnik has managed to keep himself out of the running almopst the entire event culminating in a loss to Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk isn't a shabby player by any means but Kramnik's play has been so guarded the wiuld tactics of Ivanchuk should naturally prevail (of cour

Round 6 Surprise at Dortmund Gustafsson-Leko
0000-00-00 00:00:00
With Leko as Black in round six against the leader Gustafsson I wasn't really certain what to expect from the round. After a long struggle the result is in ... Scottish Chess Championship
0000-00-00 00:00:00
thanks to Man of Steel from Goldtoken.com for providing me with this ... The Scottish Chess Championship is being broadcast live from Saturday 5 July 2008 to Sunday 13 July 2008via DGT technologies. the live PGN can be found HERE. The game quality may be slightly lower than average but that's okay because I bring it up to talk about DGT tech and there is enough master blood in the mix to make th

Round 5 at Dortmund - Gustafsson leads!!
0000-00-00 00:00:00
With two rounds to go Gustafsson has pulled into the lead by half a point. In round five he managed to defeat Loek Van Wely. I'm pulling for Gustafsson to win at this point but with two more rounds to go and a slim lead his work isn't yet behind him. Naiditsch, who I reported on earlier is not having a good tournament. His loss in round two to Gustafsson has in a sense set the tone for the event.

Crosstable After Round Four of Dortmund 2008
0000-00-00 00:00:00
From chessbase here is the crosstable from Dortmund/Sparkssen ... Van Wely gets knocked down another peg and another young gun reaches for the goal line. There have been some very interesting twists and we're only half way through. Kramnik and Leko draw which wasn't exactly what I had in mind in my previous posting. Unfortunately I won't be able to keep reporting on this even over the 4th of Ju

New Logo and Paypal Button
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I've added a new header logo to the site. I had a logo but it was in the way of Serendipity's Meta tagging. It looks good and I'm hoping that is the consensus among other browsers (not just Firefox). In addition, a custom Paypal donation button has been added to the site. The old button was buggy and its size created problems in the sidebar ... but that's all fixed now.

Kramnik vs. Leko in Round 4
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I'm going to make a prediction based on my earlier assessment of Vlad for Dortmund. Vladimir Kramnik will beat Peter Leko this round. There are several justifications for this assessment not the least of which is Leko's ability to create negative complications (negative to himself) against Kramnik. Obviously there is a rivalry but Leko should keep some of that fighting spirit in reserve. Kramnik

Chessvine logo in the works
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Okay people ... coming soon to a chessvine weblog near you ... a brand new logo for the header! I'll be adding it as soon as it's finished. It will have things looking better than before and add some continuity to the layout. Look for the addition of new rss buttons and maybe a few other image tweaks to some as well. I'm happy to see that things are coming together.

CV: Arkadi Naiditsch?

"ARKADI NAIDITSCH (born Oct-25-1985) Germany Originally from Latvia, Arkadi Naiditsch settled in Germany and became the youngest-ever grandmaster from this country in April 2001. In 2002, he drew an eight-game match with former Candidates' finalist Jan Timman in Dortmund. His greatest tournament success thus far is his clear first at the Dortmund Sparkassen (2

CV: Gustafsson leads early at Dortmund
0000-00-00 00:00:00
According to Susan Polgar's Blog (click here) Jan Gustafsson has a half point lead over the rest of the field at the Dortmund supertournament. He's the lowest rated players in the field but that's like saying he's the tiniest aircraft carrier in the fleet. Does he have a chance to win? I personally love to root for the underdogs (I rooted for Kramnik in the WCh match against Kasparov) . What do yo

ChessVine has launched
0000-00-00 00:00:00
After much effort (mostly on the part of Filip Rachunek to whom I owe a great deal) ChessVine is now up and running! Here we will discuss the latest chess news from around the world and I'll put my own opinion on the important subjects right out there for all to see. The site will undoubtedly go through a number of changes but I've created a new category called "Site News" to keep everyone up to

Gothic Chess Tournament Report
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Yesterday afternoon I played in the first $100 Gothic Chess Tournament that I was able to attend. Actually, I just heard about the weekly Monday tournaments last week so it was the first I even knew about. I'm pretty rusty at Gothic Chess but I did manage to make it to the final. Some chessplayers are outright hostile to variants but I invite all variants because I think we can learn more about ch

Return of the Chess Blog Carnival
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Well, I've been mulling over an idea given to me by another chess blogger. Namely, running an improved version of the 'Chess Blog Carnival '. A few months ago I hadn't even heard of a Blog Carnival but this subject came up at a time I had been looking into it and I see it as a sign. I'm going to be looking further into this topic but past chess blog carnivals have failed for one big reason ... part

Chess vs Alzheimer's by GM Keene

Keene On Chess GM Raymond Keene Chess vs Alzheimer 's Avid fans of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, that fantastic confection from the fertile brain of the late lamented Douglas Adams, will recall that Zaphod Beeblebrox's spaceship is powered by a so-called "Improbability Drive." This unique mode of transport was based, I believe, loosely, on Heisenberg’s Uncertainly Principle, Gödel’s I

A 'Little Fish' (Rybka) in Corporate Waters
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Well, there goes the neighborhood. Rybka has become a part of the chessbase family of chess engines (fritz, shredder, and now Rybka). In a way I'm happy because the distribution of the strongest engine on the market is now going to multiply ... which is good. However, the bad news is likely to be that its cost will double, its development will stall, and the ideas behind the program will be cannib

Chessboxing: Sazhin Beats Stoldt on wcbo.org

Both competitors displayed Chessboxing in highest quality and drama in front of 1000 spectators in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. The 19 year old challenger Nikolay ‚The Chairman’ Sazhin from Krasn

Daniel Ludwig Earns Second IM Norm
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Daniel Ludwig (read: "young man with potential") has earned his Second IM norm. At least that's what the World Chess Live newsletter is telling us in one sentence. Well, okay ... if you go all the way down and read the article on the world open things become a little clearer. Danny earned his Norm at the World Open. They (the WCL writers) just had to mention the four way tie for first by four gran

Chessvine Contest on Susan Polgar's Blog
0000-00-00 00:00:00
As of yesterday afternoon the Chessvine Blogger Contest was featured on Susan Polgar's Blog. A big thank you to Susan is due. As I've said before I'm a big fan of Susan's blog and it's a great model for what chess blogs should look like. Naturally, we recommend Susan's site to all chess fans and obviously Susan thinks that Chessvine, although new to the scene, has potential. We flatter ourselves w

Chessvine Blogger Contest

We bring up controversial issues here with an admitted cavalier attitude in the hopes that great writers will add their opinions to the mix. With that all in mind we're starting our first contest here on Chessvine. From the posting of this article until September 1st we're running an essay contest for bloggers. Guidelines: The topi

Strength of My Foes
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The best players in the state of Kentucky are mostly experts. That's a sad state of affairs but it's the 'meta-game' I'm living in today. Maintaining my 1800 rating has been somewhat of an uphill battle (mostly consisting of me losing rating points to 1600s and beating or drawing experts in alternating events). As B.Bell said ... Lower rated players may not play well but their ideas can be just a

Odiogo.com Podcasting added to Chessvine

For those who have an mp3 player/ipod or who are visually impaired Chessvine now offers podcasting services through odiogo.com. The Odiogo software aggregates the blog rss feed and using a voice synthesizer (the best I've ever heard) translates everything in Chessvine blog posts into spoken language. I not only think this will eventually be useful but it's also REALLY COOL!! I'll be adding a butt

Colombian Hostages Played Chess
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I wouldn't be any kind of journalist if ... well, okay, there's enough of opinion in this blog to disqualify me as an unbiased journalist. Anyway, I wouldn't be any kind of chess blogger if I didn't mention that chessbase has an article about the Colombian hostages who were recently freed had been playing chess on a carved set (carved by hostage Marc Gonsalves) to pass the time. I especially wante

Street Chess Experiment in Prague

Kramnik talks about the World Chess Championship
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Vladimir Kramnik has an interview (done by Pavel Matocha) featured on Chessbase. It is chessbases attempt at giving Kramnik 'equal time' I suppose. In that interview Kramnik says of Anand and the upcoming match ... Is Vishy Anand World Champion? It is not a question of simply yes or no. Anand won the tournament, which was called the World Championship Tournament, and I competed in that tou

Chess Training and Pontificating
0000-00-00 00:00:00
I've been training for an upcoming tournament I plan to attend in Lexington, Kentucky. It hasn't been easy because I know there's been some major holes in my play of late (prodcut of my own laziness ... but we won't talk about that). More than making my head hurt from training was the following article I found a few days ago from the Quantum Pontif (see HERE). Try and get your head wrapped around
