Update 2007-04-07 08:20:26 Hi everyone - J here
Sorry this is so late…the darn hospital does not have wireless access!
Baby Ethan was born on Friday, April 6th at 5:45pm. He and Mom are doing great! Ethan came out at 7lbs, 5 oz, 18 inches long with a 13.5 inch head. Becca and Grandma M were able to [...] Read more:Update

What is My Favourite Colour? 2007-04-11 07:00:44 Pic of the Day ~ Becca and her Cat Checking out the Easter Goodies ~
Well I can tell you with great confidence that YELLOW is definitely NOT my favourite colour! Poor little Ethan has jaundice. Becca had it as well when she was 4 days old! We went for our first visit to Ethan’s pediatrician (actually his ped is away but his colleague was super nice!). The doctor is “guessing” the numbers are low enough that some time in a sunny window and a lot of breast milk will do the trick for the little guy. We had to give some blood to make sure. OMG … they like drained the poor baby! It was so horrible, Ethan cried and cried … I cried, my breasts leaked … Not fun! If the jaundice numbers are higher than the doctor thinks, we will go back tomorrow and bring home a billi lights blanket to help Ethan process the yuckiness out.
~Update~ The doctor called, ugh the numbers were higher than he had initially guessed. So we have to take Ethan back to the vampires Read more:Colour

The Healing … 2007-04-10 05:51:28 Pic of the Day ~ Ethan George ~
The healing after birth I have always found the hardest part. I hurt. A lot. Darn stitches &hellip
; No episiotomy! w00t! However, I am ripped (she says as she takes a break to limp to the washroom). So yeah now I have to wait for time to heal the wounds … I hate that … hehe … control freak ya think?
The hormonal shifts, the ups, the downs are hard. Not only on me, but Becca wanting to know why Mommy is upset The apartment feels very very small. J is used to it, I am hoping my Mother-in-law gets it and well I am just trying to ride each one out.
Listen to me whine … yuck. Ethan is doing really well! We are struggling with the latch on one side, however my milk is in and he is pooping & peeing like a champ (mommy blog? Heck yeah we talk about poop here!)
Becca is doing good. She lights up when she talks to her baby brother, gives him run-by-kisses and really enjoys sharing with him. She a little more emotionally needy Read more:Healing
I Told You He Rocks! 2007-04-12 06:24:30 Pic of The Day ~ My Little iBaby ~
Ok how cute is that outfit?!?! My dear friend Marina had it custom made for MOI! The outfit has a toque, with a matching pants that have an apple pattern then the uber cool T sporting iBaby! She also gave us a matching cloth diaper. By far my favourite outfit (we brought him home in it)!
Oh Oh Oh … so all day we waited to hear back from the doctor. We took Ethan in for the second blood test fearing the worse. We do not get any sunlight in our windows, which is a blessing in the summer for heat, sucks when your baby has a jaundice. Anyway, finally at 5:30 pm I called the clinic to see what was up. They did not have a direct answer for because the doctor only worked a half day (all results were being faxed to his home and he would have called if he had received them) and the lab did not send the complete results. So a colleague of the doctor called the lab and called me back (wow this is a crazy long story) ….

Wow. I am all alone … with my two children. Wow.
We are all missing Grandma M! Becca sadly proclaimed that Grandma needs to come back! It was so sweet and sad. She had to have a tea party this morning and poured a special cup for Grandma!
J has returned to work. It is so cute. He is on-call in case I need him. It is still a crazy busy time for him at work, so he has to be there and I totally support that. Besides it is not like I am completely new at this gig!
The doctor that Ethan initially saw on Tuesday called with updates yesterday. He asked about Ethan’s colouring and cautioned us not to be over-confident and if we think he is yellowing we should bring him in for yet another blood test. So we sought out the only sunbeam in the apartment and Ethan has been soaking up the rays for a couple hours each day. He is definitely not getting worse and he seems to be a little more alert, so we are keeping the hope.

Life is Good 2007-04-15 20:11:27 Pics of the Day ~ Becca Enjoying her new Bike & Ethan Snuggling with Grandma M ~
Once again I want to start up the Grateful posts on Sundays. It helps me keep things in perspective in a very tumultuous time in our lives.
I am very grateful that Ethan arrived into the world on a beautiful day, full of happiness and peace. I could not have asked for a better birth experience (well I would like to forgo the tear that is now torturing me as it heals but eh, perfection is overrated).
I am thankful that Becca adores her baby brother and was able to be part of our day by coming to visit us before Ethan was born and not very long after he was born. She was able to meet her baby brother before he was taken to the nursery for tests! In fact she was not to keen on giving him a kiss because he was still “dirty” hehe!
I am so very grateful that my Mother-in-law was here to not only help me, but to be here for Becca. We are so far from family and Becca misses out on the gran

Pics of the Day ~ Mommy with Ethan snuggled in the Mei Tei & Becca with the kids at the party ~
Having two so is not going to slow me down, w00t! We have been busy over the past few days.
On Sunday, we enjoyed a family day. It was cold and rainy, but that did not stop Becca enjoying the backyard, playing with water and using her imagination. After lunch we went to a friend’s 2nd Birthday party. Oh what fun was had by all! J had a blast (the friend’s Dad is a chemist so there was plenty of other Dad’s and guys to chat with), Becca ran with delight in the rain soaked grass with the other children and Ethan was snuggled up in a Mei Tei, allowing me to cluck with the other hens Great people, great food … Great time! (so going to miss these people when we move ).
Yesterday, Ethan, Becca and I scooted out for a playdate at the park with Holly and Jamie! I was so organized getting the two kids out the door! (should I mention here that J went into work late
Crunchy Mama 2007-04-18 22:23:51 Pics Of Day ~ Becca the Cutie Pie & Ethan the Crunchy Baby ~
I feel very fortunate that Ethan seems to be fitting into our little world perfectly. He is still in that newborn, I-sleep-all-the-time stage, however he seems to be pretty laid back and ready for adventures.
I wear him daily in my Mei Tei (I adore mine, I bought it as a second on Ebay, the straps are ever so slightly uneven so I got a great deal on it!). I am a firm believer in wearing babies. I did not start wearing Becca until she was almost 3 months old. I would carry her constantly, do little around the house and wonder if there was an easier way to be close to her but not necessarily “stuck” with her. I know there are a lot of people that would believe that it is not good to hold/wear your baby. That moms need a break, or that I am “spoiling” Ethan. It worked for Becca and honestly, Ethan only cries when we change him. He hates having his diaper changed … not sure if it is a cold/no
Two Weeks of Bliss 2007-04-20 19:44:13 Pic of the Day ~ Daddy with Becca & Ethan ~
I am in awe that two weeks have passed since giving birth to Ethan. I knew that it was going to be wonderful to have two children (really or else why would I dare?), yet I did not expect this sense of fulfillment. I feel so content. Like this is right where I am suppose to be.
Becca is adjusting amazingly well. We were not sure what to expect, considering she & I are so close, so intertwined, so Mother … Daughter. Yet here we are two weeks later and she includes her baby brother in her play (”Ethan just pretend to eat the Cheerio, k?”), gives him random drive-by kisses and sings to him when he cries. At first she was a tad more melodramatic than normal, crying a little longer if hurt or frustrated and definitely testing our limits. However that has all seemed to fade as time has gone by and we are finding our groove. Becca has changed before my eyes into a independent almost pre-schooler. She leaves me in awe. The Science of Parenting - Experiment #341 2007-04-21 21:06:58 Video of the Day ~ Becca Exhausted ~
Parenting
is a science in which parents perform experiments on a regular basis, attempting to understand the child. Experiment
s are performed based on food choices, friends, the alphabet retention, potty learning, all so we the parents feel like we “know” what we are doing. We at Soodz are embarking on a new experiment. For months we have struggled with bedtime. Becca has fought going to sleep, repeatedly getting out of bed, only to be sent back. It has become stressful for us. I need some time with my husband. I was beginning to feel like I was competing with Becca for J’s attention. Not fun. Therefore bringing us to our hypothesis.
Will the removal of afternoon nap lead to a smoother, earlier bedtime? If said nap is removed, will the child be getting enough sleep? How will the sanity of the mother remain somewhat in tack once nap time is gone? In addition, will the moving of bathtime, enhance sleepiness and encourage early bed Read more:Science
Running Behind 2007-04-24 17:00:30 Pic of the Day ~ Becca and Ethan ~
I hope everyone had a nice Earth Day! I know I am a little behind here but, eh better late than never! I am discovering that it will take some new approaches to live the life the way we did before Ethan arrived, and be on time.
Michelle from Scribbit just had a post on being late, I find it horrific to be late, yet that is what I find myself achieving, bringing me much anxiety.
I celebrated Earth Day, by knitting with Marina in the morning (wool is totally a renewable resource!) then after lunch, the family went to Santa Rosa Plateau for a hike. Ethan was bundled up in the Mei Tei and Becca was AMAZING hiking almost a mile and a half before J put her up on his shoulders. It was wonderful.
Yesterday, we spent the day at the park with Holly and Jamie. Always a good time. Holly shared yet another meal with us (she totally spoils me!!!) that was fabulous! I made good progress on a new knitting project that I want to get done for a friend’s baby
Your 15 Minutes of Fame 2007-04-23 17:21:45 There are definitely moments during this crazy ride called Motherhood, that I have shared that have made you laugh, cry or shake your head. By no means am I a professional writer, but I do consider myself a professional Mom.
There is a new web series that is going to attempt to capture us “Real Moms” in a really creative way. The Project is called In The Motherhood, hosted by Leah Remini (the actress from the King Of Queens). When I first started exploring the website I was impressed how much they focused on “by Moms, for Moms, about Moms”. It is an online community in which we Moms, can submit our stories (and I know there are some amazing writers out there that would totally knock the socks off this community) and enjoy other Mom’s experiences.
The winners of the writing the scene that is chosen win some really neat prizes, plus the episode that is performed will be shown on the Ellen DeGeneres Show! The community looks really active and fun. I do no
Do Ya Think I am Sexy 2007-04-28 01:16:39 Pics of the Day ~ The Kiddies Outside ~
The contract negotiations on this Stay at Home Mom gig, need to be re-negotiated. I am so not loving cleaning the bathroom and dusting. There has to be a way out of those chores (I would imagine working moms have the same chores, but in my fantasies they all have hot male maids to do their bidding … realistic?)
Once I made my back ache real good, I took the kiddies outside to enjoy the nice weather we are FINALLY having! Sheesh, we start to plan to move and Southern California stops being sunny! Becca enjoyed splashing around in her pool, Ethan slept in the shade and I had the opportunity to knit … Life is good (maybe this gig staying at home is not soooo bad after all?)
I am sooooo excited. J has to work tomorrow (not the exciting part, that actually sucks a little but eh whatever), but on Sunday due to a cancellation in the knitting (again not a good part of the story … moving on) we are trekking to VENICE BEACH …
The Kids 2007-04-26 21:29:18 Pics of the Day ~ Ethan’s First Bath ~
Becca had her last appointment with the goddess of pediatric eye specilaists This specialist was amazing, not only did she rock working with Becca, she was kind, caring and helped us avoid eye surgery! Becca’s eyes continue to respond to the eye therapy (aka her glasses). She utilizes the bi-focals the way they are intended and her eyes are straight while she wears the glasses. The doctor gave us some names of eye specialists in New Mexico so we can continue her treatment and eye care there.
Becca has officially graduated to size 4 clothes! GASP! She is too long for 3T & even 4T! Besides, in pants she gets awful plumber’s crack since she has no butt and wears panties rather than diapers. Oh … What’s up the Daisy Dukes for shorts for girls? I mean sure the kid has great legs but they are beat to heck since she plays hard core. So I have resorted to buying her boys shorts, which look incredibly cute as skater sh

Ok … I really cannot keep it all inside anymore. Blogging and keeping “secrets” is totally hard to do!
Here is the deal.
More than anything, J & I wanted to return our family back to Canada. J applied for all the academic positions that were posted in Canada this year, but due to a lot of qualified competition, it did not pan out.
In the meantime, J being the uber provider that he is, starting looking at alternatives without giving up on the ultimate goal of a position in Canada at a university. Through a series of events (it is so who you know not always what you know), J began pursuing a second post-doctoral position in Los Alamos.
There is a National Lab, located in Los Alamos. Most famous for ~gasp~ the development of the atomic bomb, many moons ago. Now a days it is not geared towards the mass destruction of our planet, instead the lab is a great facility f Read more:Again
The $8,000 Baby! 2007-05-02 11:14:38 Pics of the Day ~ The Many Faces of Ethan and Wave Dancer ~
I am not sure I will ever understand the American health system. I do however, find it odd that although the entire birth (and even the prenatal visits!) was covered by my healthcare insurance, they feel the need to present to me the bill that they had to pay. Like I should be forever grateful for the coverage that we pay for (not us directly but J’s boss has to pay for it!) So Ethan’s arrival, the heaven sent epidural, the undisclosed amount of stitches in my vagina, and the rest of the miscellaneous hospital related stuff cost over $8,000!
In other news … I am learning very quickly that if I get behind in my day all hell will break loose all at once, leaving me distrate and ready to cry.
My first attempt at cooking dinner on my own without assistance or it coming out of a box was pretty much a failure. I was running a tad behind but had a plan. Ethan was peacefully sleeping, Becca was all washed up and
Necessity is a Mother 2007-05-01 11:03:56 My daughter is two years old and this Mother’s Day will be my third but I only just recently feel like I’m finally making this parenting thing work. I’m finally starting to feel like a real mom and not some woman simply acting the part until the real one comes along. So now I wonder - how much longer until Mother’s Day starts feeling like my day?
I know that may sound selfish - Mother’s Day is a day for all mothers, after all, not just me - but this year like years past (the fourth one without a mother of my own to share it with) Mother’s Day just doesn’t seem like a time to celebrate. And I wonder when I’ll stop feeling sorrow and longing for what I have lost and instead feel joy and gratitude for what I’ve been given.
However, you might be able to help me.
This may seem like a total downer during a time when we should be celebrating all things maternal, and I’m sorry for that, but this motherless mother gig is tough. My Read more:Necessity
That was so COOL! 2007-04-30 06:51:22 Pics of the Day ~ Venice Beach Baby ~
Despite some stomach issues on my part, we had a fab day at the beach! Venice Beach was so cool to experience! I cannot imagine how insane it gets there in the summer time!
We left early morning and parked at Venice Beach. It was still pretty quiet (Southern Californians rarely venture out early on weekends, even to the mall it is odd). It was nice to browse the stands and art and all the sidewalk/boardwalk vendors. Then we walked to the Santa Monica Pier (just a couple miles I believe). We stopped at a playground for Becca to play.
It was funny. Becca has become quite the climber as of late, however I have to let her go for it even when she asks for help. If I rescue her, fear takes her over and she is paralyzed and can go no further. If she gets past it on her own, she rocks and is very proud of herself (a lot of this self-confidence issue comes from the lack of depth perception pre-glasses). Well she decided to climb up these bars, something
Experiment Results 2007-05-04 01:32:51 Pics of the Day ~ Sleeping Beauty and Chubby Cheeks ~
Remember Experiment
#341? the one in which we were testing the following hypothesis:
Will the removal of afternoon nap lead to a smoother, earlier bedtime? If said nap is removed, will the child be getting enough sleep? How will the sanity of the mother remain somewhat in tack once nap time is gone? In addition, will the moving of bath time, enhance sleepiness and encourage early bedtime.
We failed the experiment. I tried I really did. For a week and a half we lived without any nap whatsoever. All was good until around 3-4 pm, then my cute and darling toddler turned into a cranky, miserable monster! The earlier bedtime did in fact occur, which was lovely, however dealing with a very tired toddler for 4 hours was not.
We had to revamp the hypothesis. Rather than removing the nap completely, we have limited the amount of time Becca is allowed to sleep. Once the sweet pea is asleep it is a challenge to wake her, therefore incentive
Becoming an Addict 2007-05-03 01:45:08 Pics of the Day ~ iBaby Cutie & Goosie Girl ~
Blogging is quite addictive on its own. Anyone that blogs can testify that it takes up much more of their “free” time than they ever would have imagined. Most bloggers do not complain, instead relish in giving and receiving comments as well as reading about one another lives.
However, lately there has been even more to blogging. All these great bloggers are hosting contests and sharing freebies! I so a sucker for free stuff I love to win! Really who doesn’t?!?
The Opinionated Parent is a great resource not only for contests but for parenting resources. Although you really should not enter any of the contests because you may win and therefore I will not. In fact, I won 10 Goosie Cards recently (I can hardly wait to order them after my Dad’s visit next week), as well as a cool prize pack that included a T-shirt for Becca and a tank top I hope to be able to wear by the end of the summer (need to go on a few mo Read more:Becoming

Becca took a deep breath through her nose, inhaling the sweet smell of dinner and proclaimed … “MMmmm It’s Smellicious!”. J & I totally cracked up!
Ethan is doing the baby thing. I am in awe that a month has gone by! Where did the time go??? He has a doctor’s appoitment on Monday for shots and a check up … he was 7.5 lbs when he was born … any guessesas to how much he weighs now?
My Dad arrives tomorrow!!!! J & Becca will go get him from Palm Springs in the afternoon! I am so excited that he finally gets to meet Ethan! And spend some quality time with Becca. She already has a list of things to do with Grandpa!
Hot Hot Hot! 2007-05-09 03:33:42 Pics of the Day ~ Ethan and Becca enjoying time with Grandpa! ~
Phew it is HOT outside. We mistakenly attempted to enjoy some time at the park this morning. Sadly the slides were hot enough to fry an egg and it was way to hot to really enjoy the park! Becca did show off some of her wicked cool climbing skills to her Grandpa though!
Once home Becs enjoyed the kiddie pool, although it is most definitely warm enough now to enjoy the pool in the complex! I think Grandpa will take Becca tomorrow!
Ethan SMILED!!! Like for sure, on two different occasions! I was so excited. He even smiled at my Dad! It was awesome!!! Totally sweet his first smiles!
We are really enjoying a casual and relaxing visit.
It is odd to think the next time my Dad comes to visit we will be living in another state! He is already planning a trip to New Mexico. He is super excited to tour a new area of the US. I keep myself in denial that we are moving in a couple months. I guess it will not be a reality until we ar
Liquid Gold 2007-05-07 20:28:37 Pic of the Day ~ Ethan ~
Ethan went to his doctor’s appointment this morning. He had his second Hep B shot. I think the nurse was new. She did not place pressure on the spot after she took the needle out and let him bleed all over. It was odd, but Ethan survived like a champ!
Not that I think my breastmilk is any better than others, but hot dog it is truly liquid gold for my kids. Becca wasn’t even 5 lbs when she was born, yet by 6 months of age she was in line with full term babies. Ethan was 7 lbs 8 oz when he was born and now a month later he is a whooping 10 lbs 9 oz! He’s a little porker and explains my exhaustion! So the kid is healthy and there are no concerns, which totally rocks! I am in awe that he is a month old already! He is growing like a weed! I ordered more cloth diapers already!

I am not one to complain about motherhood. Sure not all of parenting is glorious, wonderous and magical. However, I wanted children. Being a stay at home mom is my dream, why would I complain constantly?!?! Not my thing. I am a glass half full kind of girl.
Soooo …
Although I have been a tad extremely tired lately, I have been quiet about it. I would never dream of complaining about nursing my sweet, Ethan. I bring him life. That is amazing. It is tiring. Sometimes it feels like he is sucking the life out of me. I remember all to well feeling the same way with Becca. She was even more demanding due to being premature and needing so much from me.
Ethan only got up once last night to nurse!!!!! It is the first time since I was 5 months pregnant that I have slept so much. It was GLORIOUS. I feel so good. I know not to expect it every night, however it is good to know that there isthat shimmer of hope that sleep will once again be a healthy pa Read more:Dance

Becca likes to sing a little song while taking a poop on the potty. Or she will talk endlessly to herself while taking care of business.
Ethan absolutely adores being in the sling. On days when we are home more, he gets a little cranky if I do not wear him.
Becca can spend upwards to an hour and a half in the bathtub. She takes with her a collection of plastic animals and plays with them. Sometimes they are fishing, swimming, eating or sleeping. Her imagination is endless with those little animals.
Ethan wears cloth diapers 99% of the time. We are still not brave enough to go cloth when out and about. Not sure what the hesitation is since he has leaked in disposables (Huggies no less!) yet only once out of a cloth (that was too big for him!)
Becca loves to make e
In Your Wildest Dreams 2007-05-13 17:01:37 Pic of the Day ~ Ethan & Becca chilling with Grandpa ~
For as long as I can remember I wondered if she was out there, somewhere longing to be with me. I imagined she was looking up at the same stars I was, tears in her eyes too, making wishes to the heavens. Surely she missed me. Wanted me. Loved me.
For that is what Mothers do.
Not my mother. She did not long to be with me, nor was she making wishes or loving me. I was destined to be different. As a child I was blissfully unaware of this. I never understood why my Dad or Grandmother never spoke of her. Yet now I understand their wisdom. How do you tell a child that their mother does not make wishes, is not sad or broken?
So I would listen to Moody Blues on the radio, “I know your out there somewhere” and “In Your WildestDreams
” and fantasize about our fabulous reunion. The mysterious woman would rescue me from my sadness, complete me and never again would we be separated. She was perfect in every wa

Thanks for all the amazing insight on pacifiers yesterday. I am still very wary of them. J & I are lazy by nature and I totally fear becoming dependant on the little suckers. That being said, it hurts my heart when the little man cries!
Ethan & I spent the day together. It was nice, although I missed Becca so much! First stop on our tour was the OB’s office! I am in awe that I have now went to my 6 week follow up appointment! How has 6 weeks gone by? All is well, I am healing. My doctor is so awesome. He hugged me and thanked me for allowing him to be part of Ethan’s birth! So sweet!
Then Ethan and I cruised to Anaheim for the Scholastic Warehouse Book Sale ~Drool~ It was AMAZING! The most expensive book I purchased …. $5 … I spent like $45 and walked away with nearly 20 books!!!
