Summer Jams I: The Isle of Wight - 8.26.70
2008-07-06 15:17:33
Over the years I had heard of "The Isle of Wight" when great groups like The Doors, E.L.P. and The Who were mentioned. I would dismiss it as just another concert scene kind of like a "Woodstock". As it turns out is was actually bigger than Woodstock, Live Aid and Summer Jam at Watkins Glen during it's run. It actually had run 3 festival dates from 1968 to 1970. Estimated attendance of over 600,000

One Hit Wonders: Part 2
2008-06-28 10:28:31
Here's the second installment of... One Hit Wonders of the 1970's. After hearing from you I've decided to be more selective with the choices to play on this blog. Some of the songs on my original list crossed in to other "genres" from the era, i.e. Soul, Funk, Easy Listening and even Country & Western. In keeping with the feel and theme of this blog, I present you with videos of some true classic

The best company is "Bad Company"
2008-06-21 12:09:44
Paul Rodgers, the creative genius behind the late 60's/early 70's British blues/rock group FREE and songs like "All Right Now", went on to form Bad Company in 1974 and released their self-titled album. Fast forward 2 years to 1976 and the Artster was jammin' in the basement, headphones on playing air guitar in front of the mirror. On the turntable was the album I had purchased earlier that day, "S

Queens of Rock I: Heart
2008-06-14 13:15:24
The first time I remember hearing "Crazy on You" was in 1976, on a transistor radio, when I was at a summer camp up near Green Lake, WI. The acoustical guitar riffs in the beginning blew me away from the get go. Then the voice of the rock goddess, Ann Wilson, coming on is the ultimate in a Queens of Rock moment. Now take a trip with me. An era of "male dominated" rock superstars like Led Zeppelin,

Welcome to the 70's

When you hear a song from your youth, do you kickback and reminisce what you were doing that summer? Does it remind you of a first love? Can you still smell the raspberry incense burning while you were listening to your favorite album or 8-track tape? For me it's a resounding Yeesss!Every time I hear Crazy on You by Heart I think of summer camp. Or when I watch a movie like "Dazed and Confused", I

8.6.77 - Super Bowl of Rock - Game III
2008-06-08 15:53:45
It was incredibly hot that Sunday in Chicago at Soldiers' Field. My first outdoor concert experience and I was freaking that I was there to see: .38 Special, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent headlining. What a show. For an 8th grade grad starting high school that September, I was on top of the world. I think it was more the event then even knowing who the bands were. You see,

Journey... Let the memories flow!

The wheel in the skyyyyy....turnin' turnin' turnin'... - Steve PerryWhen Journey added Steve Perry's high-pitched pipes... history was made. He has one of the most distinct voices in rock. Journey's Infinity album was their stepping stone to international stardom and one of my personal favorites. The songs, "Lights", "Wheel in the Sky" and "Winds of March" are all classic rock ballads in their own

R.E.O - "You Get What You Play For"
2008-06-07 14:29:37
This was the first rock album I ever bought. After the Super Bowl of Rock I was hooked. When I saw this album and that it was a "Live" recording, too cool. I think I wore the grooves out on two of these playing the air guitar in the basement.A closer look at the songs and styling of the sound and this album is the epitome of arena rock in the 70's. Rare Earth: (Pure Funk + R&B + Soul) = Classic Rock
2008-07-16 23:45:18
Rare Earth is one of just a few groups that I didn't really get into until I was hitting my twenties. I'd heard the music on the radio when I was younger. Their big hit covers of Get Ready, I'm Losin' You and I Just Want To Celebrate blasting the speaker on my little transistor radio. But when I started listening to them on my big, bad stereo system when I was older, it was a totally different e

May I Have A Little "Aqualung" With That Please?
2008-07-29 00:12:23
What the heck is an Aqualung anyway? Aq·ua-Lung: noun a device (trade name Aqua-Lung) that lets divers breathe under water; from L. aqua "water" + lung. Developed by Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan, 1943.(Provided by dictionary.com)That being said, in 1971 the word took on a whole new meaning for legions of teens and trippers. It was the title track for Jethro Tull's breakthrough album and coin
