Prophetic Signs, Wisdom & Torah 2006-11-11 02:31:00 In follow-up to my posts on the (eleven) "signs" (of Etz Chai) which mark my Hall Of Records, The Adversaries, the unexpected murder of Jewish actress/director/screenwriter Adrienne Shelly, and Yirat Hashem (the baker and the butler) - some important notes with respect to the "prophetic" connection threading through all of them:Dave at Balashon writes regarding nes-nisayon:The connection to flag is clear. And I think we can see the development of nes from flag to miracle via an understanding of the word as "sign". These aren't just miracles for their own sake - they are trying to show something, to act as a sign. David Guttmann writes at Believing Is Knowing regarding nes-nisayon as pertaining to the idea of "demonstration" within the context of distinguishing nevuah (prophecy):The word Nissah or its derivatives in the context of demonstration appears six times in the Torah
and Rambam addresses those specifically. It appears three times in the context of the Mann, once by Avraham and Read more: Wisdom
Bechirah Chofshit, Unspellbound 2006-10-31 22:30:00 I dreamt.A witch was carrying me like a mother bird [1] in her arms, flying through the air, taking me someplace. She was trying to lull me to sleep with the peacefulness of the flight. But, I only pretended to fall asleep as she carried me to some mysterious place - to see where she was taking me and to see what her intention was. When she thought I was asleep, she entered a big mansion of a house [2] and deposited me on a bed in an upstairs bedroom. It was daylight outside. She was going to steal a drop of my blood [3] via a finger pinprick while I slept unaware (she thought)! Like hell! I thought.I stopped pretending to be asleep and asked her what she was doing. "Oh," she said, discombobulated by my sudden wakefulness, "I just want a little drop of blood," she faltered. "For tests," she lied. I knew what she was really thinking. She thought that by getting a drop of my blood, she could bind [4], control and put spells on me."No," I said, "I'm not going to give you a drop of blood."
Origin Of Evil 2006-09-26 07:16:00 יוצר אור ובורא חשך, עשה שלום ובורה רע; אני יהוה, עשה כל-אלהForm light and create darkness, make peace and create evil; I Hashem, do all these.Yishayahu 45:7This verse makes it clear that evil cannot exist independent of human beings, endowed with free will, and made in the image of the Divine. Human beings are responsible for all evil. The word used for "I', in this verse is ani אני - the same word a human being uses to say "I". Consequently, evil is only created within the context of an "I"; that is, a human being. Further, evil does not exist except within the context of an "I", who as a human being made in the image of the Divine, misuses his or her free will (bechirah chofshit בחירה חופשית) as an agent of the Divine.Supporting the idea that misuse of human free will constitutes the origin of evil is also the fact that the word used for "I" in this verse is ani אני in contradistinction to another word for "I" which could h Read more: Origin
Beit HaBechirah 2006-07-30 01:44:00 Today, on an old livejournal post Soul Of A Bat Kohen, a comment was left by "r from Jers.", writing in part:Something I learned recently, before we come to this world we have NO FREE CHOICE. Free choice is a garment called tzelem given to the neshama. The INTERESTING part is that after this world we WEAR the tzelem & it basically testifies our accomplishments in this world. Also, nefesh is PHYSICAL, ruach is EMOTION & neshama is INTELLECT. WE are our RUACH which means we have to have the "right" emotions about the "right" things (as directed by our neshamoth/INTELLECT). Therefore, INTELLECTUALLY discover Truth, THEN get excited about it. We are our RUACH (NOT our neshama) & THAT is wear our growth must occur. There are two points I need to make with respect to this kind of thinking:1. In my case, what "r from Jers." writes about free choice is not true. I did indeed have free choice before coming into this world, and had to be convinced that coming into the world was the right thin
Mocha Stima'ah & Pulchan Of The Firstborn 2006-06-20 08:25:00 I've learned a new thing today. There are two "kinds" of Temple service. One is called avodah, עבודה (which I already knew). The other is called pulchan, פולחן.Avodah is from the shoresh1 עבד and implies work subject to another's will. Pulchan, on the other hand, from the shoresh1 פלח, implies separating and dividing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the significance.Avodah is the service one renders where one's will is yet to be rectified and brought into full alignment with the Divine Will. Consequently, avodah is the service done by one whose consciousness is primarily centered upon rectifying the middot.Pulchan is the service one renders when one's will is fully aligned with the Divine Will. At this level, where consciousness is centered within the mochin (capable of insight, differentiation and rationality) and integrated into the Divine Will, one can truly be said to have free-will (bechirah chofshit). At this "point of Will" (mocha stima'ah), one ca Read more: Mocha
Daas Torah & The Inquiring Mind 2006-06-17 01:02:00 In my mind, Daas Torah
and free-thinking are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, they are complimentary and each necessary in the fruitful search for truth. Of course, I don't define Daas Torah as asking a Rabbi to make all one's decisions either. There is a time to ask and a time not to ask. May we all be blessed to be able to distinguish the times.I personally don't have a problem with the ideal of Daas Torah in terms of recognizing that there are people who understand more than I do. On the other hand, I don't believe that someone else's Daas Torah negates the validity of my own Daas Torah (even in a relatively underdeveloped state). If another person's "Daas Torah" becomes an obstacle to the development of my unique "Daas Torah", then I would question the advisor's motive and surely doubt that the advisor was answering from a position of "Daas Torah". Additionally, when someone suggests I abdicate my mind to an advisor's will - this is a clear red flag that Daas Torah is not
Rosh Chodesh Nissan Personal Healing Segulah 2007-03-20 05:07:00 א' בניסן תשס"זThis is my custom made Book Of Shadows, except that the leather of my sefer is black. (See larger photo here.) The leather is deeply and exquisitely wrinkled. The spine has five corded sashes with a pentacle set into the spine at the third cord. Brass appliques adorn the classic raised corners of the cover. The end papers are marbled black. The inner aged parchment pages are huge - 11 by 14 inches! The edges of the 500 blank pages are hand-burned, like the book has been plucked from a fire. This book is a gorgeous piece of handcrafted artwork! My Torah-kabbalistic-shamanic witchcraft is going into it as an heirloom for my children.I'm in heaven! With the Rosh Chodesh Nissan
purchase of this book, I hereby mark a new chapter in my life.Although a huge expense for me at a time when cash is not plentiful, the purchase itself - to me - is sacred and invested with my hopes and dreams for the future. Eliyahu's Cup & The Goblet Of Fire 2007-03-22 04:52:00 ואת-גביעי גביע הכסף ... Bereshit 44:2The phrase "and put my chalice, the silver goblet" (in Hebrew above) has a total gematria of 752, the same gematria as the Hebrew word for the phase "in a cleft" (בנקרת) in Shemot 33:22.Shemot 33:22 - And it shall come to pass, while My glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with My hand until I have passed by.Chalice (goblet) is derived from the shoresh גבע, meaning to "elevate". Magickally, a chalice can correspond to either water or fire, although most commonly in the craft it corresponds to water. Why?In kabbalistic tarot, the suit of "cups" (chalices) pertains generally to the universe of Beriyah. Keter of Beriyah occupies the place of Tiferet of Atzilut [1]. Elementally, Beriyah corresponds to water, while Atzilut corresponds to fire.Given this information, the "goblet of fire" corresponds to the "place" on the Tree of Life where Keter of Beriyah (water) and Tiferet of Atzilut Read more: Goblet
Witch's Brew - "Goblet Of Peace" 2007-03-24 07:52:00 ה' בניסן תשס"זThe following incense recipe brings together into the world of action a link to the supernal Goblet
Of Fire (Eliyahu's Cup) as discussed in a previous post. The Goblet of Fire corresponds to the "place" on the Tree of Life where Keter of Beriyah (water) and Tiferet of Atzilut (fire) are One. In other words, in Keter of Beriyah (which is Tiferet of Atzilut) peace is made between fire and water. Thus, the goblet of fire is exactly this place where peace is made in the heavens [1]. Importantly, we can also understand from this information that the Goblet of Fire is also the Goblet of Peace

The Golden Sceptre 2007-02-24 21:44:00 ו' באדר תשס"זAs mentioned in the previous post, the Torah source of my chotimah is found in parashat Tetzaveh (Shemot 28:36), in the phrase pituchei chotam פתוחי חתם.Pituchei chotam has a total gematria of 952, a digit sum of 16, and a final digit sum of 7. Seven is the value of the letter zayin, where zayin represents both the woman of valor and the King's sceptre of selection. As Purim is soon upon us, the phrase for "golden sceptre" in Esther 8:4 is שרבט הזהב.From the root שרב, the spelling שרבט for sceptre as found in Esther implies "dry heat" [1]. Normatively however, sceptre is spelled with a letter yod in it - שרביט. The letter yod is the kabbalistic source of chochmah, and associated with water. Thus, the addition of the letter yod to the word שרבט removes the dryness associated with feminine fire and adds to it the "core" element of water, mayim מים. Consequently, the "extension of the sceptre" to Esther, is in fact, the giving of t Read more: Golden

Pituchei Chotam, Key Signature 2007-02-24 04:52:00 I've finally found a specific Torah "source" for my unique aleph, my chotimah! What are they teaching usANSWER: The Gemara (Ta'anit 2a) states that Hashem entrusts the tzaddikim with keys to all His treasures. He appoints them as His messengers and gives them the power to use them as they see fit. An exception to this are the keys to three treasures: 1) The power enabling birth (chayah), 2) the power to resurrect (techiat hameisim), and 3) the power to make rain (matar). The keys to these treasures are reserved and controlled only by Him.The word "pituchei" can be interpreted to mean "keys" (in Hebrew, "maftei'a Read more: Signature
Fifty Copper Hooks - A Witch's Understanding 2007-02-18 04:55:00 witch's bolineל' בשבט תשס"זIn this week's Torah portion (Terumah), we are instructed to make "fifty hooks of copper" (קרסי נחשת חמשים) for the mishkan (Shemot 26:11).In an earlier post, I mentioned that the witch's herb, mugwort, has copper in it. Interestingly, the word for copper in the phrase above from this week's Torah portion is נחשת - the same word used for a female enchantress. A witch.Fifty
(חמשים) pertains to Understanding
, the feminine intelligence Binah. The shoresh קרס means "curved hook" - like a witch's boline (curved utility knife) is a curved hook. Oddly, I saw this sickle-shaped hook in the wax of my shabbat candle last night as well.Taking all this together, the phrase - קרסי נחשת חמשים - suggests that the "50 hooks of copper" in the mishkan are indeed referring to the "understanding of a witch" which "hooks" the truth.Technorati tags: Torah Talmud Torah Judaism Kabbalah jewish mysticism mysticism jewish meditation Read more: Copper

Yitro, Inbreeding & Imbalance 2007-02-09 20:52:00 כ"א בשבט תשס"זChaim B. writes on parashat Yitro:Does behavior and attitude function like a recessive gene? Neither my wife not I have red hair, but my daughter does – could she also grow up exhibiting some behavior or attitude we don’t teach at home solely as a result of having some genetic mix from past generations? The Derashos haRan actually does offer such an idea to explain why Avraham insisted that Yitzchak marry a wife from his own family rather than any neighboring tribe who had become monotheistic and who were within his sphere of influence. The Ran says that Avraham’s family possessed “genes” of chessed which outweighed the commitment arrived at intellectually by those who surrounded him.The genetic and kabbalistic reality is that inbreeding causes spiritual as well as physical imbalance. We see the physical imbalance easily in the transmission of genetic based disease. In the realm of middot, consider dogs - like police dogs or pit bulls or poodles - are Read more: Imbalance

Power To Reconcile Opposites 2006-09-27 08:56:00 Since I've never explained the title of my blog, livejournal and website before, this is just a blurb regarding the significance of Walking On Fire.I choose the name Walking On Fire in consideration of my longstanding obsession with the idea (R' Adin Steinsaltz, In The Beginning) that:The purpose of creation and of our being in it is to integrate the worlds of tohu and tikun into a third order of existence much greater than either tohu or tikun of itself.Supporting this endeavor, R' Aryeh Kaplan on Sefer Yetzirah 3:2 writes:One commentator states that the letters AMSh אמש contain the mystery through which one can walk on fire [1]. The reason for this may be because these letters [2] have the power to reconcile opposites. It is possible that Rav Zeira made use of this technique to prevent his feet from being burned in fire, as related in the Talmud [3].Given that my blog's purpose is to reconcile the opposites of tohu and tikun in my own nature, I decided "walking on fire" would

Kli Tahor: Artistic Obligations & Aseret HaDibrot 2006-09-08 06:49:00 Spot at hashkafah forums asked the question:Artists ... do you get insulted if someone suggests an improvement to your work, be it in painting, graphics, music, etc.?In my own case, that would depend upon the kavanah and accuracy of the criticism, as well as whether or not there was an established relationship of trust between myself and the one offering suggestions. Hishtavut does not require us to lay aside discernment. Some people just want to tear me down. Some people might have worthy suggestions. I don't know that I would necessarily be insulted by an unworthy suggestion, but I certainly wouldn't consider it valid nor "accept" it as I would a worthy one.Ultimately, however, my work needs to be true to reality as I see it, as opposed to a reality "I do not know" (i.e., the reality of someone else). Ari By The Nile 2006-09-06 06:06:00 I found the one link that was messing up (and deleting) the entire entry Running On Regalim when I tried posting it on one of my other blogs. Interestingly, it was the link I had for the word "river" (pertaining to the Nile) from the Ascent Of Tzfat website. When I looked up a replacement link with a URL Yahoo 360 (the blogsite that would not accept the river link that blogspot, wordpress and livejournal all accepted) would accept, I found a link that spoke about the Ari learning by the side of the Nile. This struck me as interesting because, between two words that I could have chosen for the word locker in the entry describing the dream, I chose the word ארונית over the word נועל from my dictionary because of its similarity to the word aron (ארון and my experience, Epiphany In The Closet In 1967).The shoresh of the word I used for locker is from the same root (ארה) as lion (אריה), where the Ari is commonly called the Holy Lion. So, how is this interesting? The Aleppo Codex, Serach & Hanhaga 2006-08-30 06:10:00 Fred MacDowell at On The Main Line writes regarding the Aleppo Codex:The Aleppo Codex (כתר ארם צובא) was the possession of the Jewish community of Aleppo, Syria for centuries. It was regarded as a treasure, which is why it was called by them The Crown; הכתר or 'el-Taj. By tradition it was regarded as having been written (or rather vocalized) by the greatest Masorete, 'Aharon (ben Moshe) ben 'Asher, which is what a colophon page in the book claimed. Furthermore, it was believed that this was the very book which the Rambam consulted in writing his own sepher Torah, as recounted in Mishne Torah Hilkhot Sepher Torah 8:5.Fred also points out in his article:1) In the Mishne Torah the Rambam says that the shirah of parashat ha'azinu must be written on 70 lines in a Torah (fully in accord with massekhet sopherim, I believe, sorry no cite at the moment).2) In the Aleppo Codex this is written on 67 lines. This would seem reason enough to conclude that this wasn't then the codex

Asherah & Canaanite Isha 2006-08-06 00:56:00 Devarim 16:21Do not plant for yourselves an Asherah of any kind of tree beside the alter of Hashem your G-d ...לא-תטע לך אשרה כל-עץ אצל מזבח יי אלהיךIn parashat Va'etchanan (Devarim 7:1-5), we are commanded to cut off, chop and burn the Asherim of the 7 nations. Among the 7 nations are the Canaanites. In contrast to the 7 nations, Devarim 7:6 tells us, we are consecrated and set apart by Hashem.Parashat Ekev elaborates on what will happen to us as a nation if we fail to distinguish ourselves from the 7 nations. We honor Hashem by acknowledging our consecration. New Townhall Blog - Jewitch On The Issues 2007-03-26 04:31:00 I've created a new townhall blog - Jewitch On The Issues
.I've created the new blog for two basic reasons:1) to educate myself on issues through exploring and eventually articulating my own opinions, and2) to educate myself on issues through exploring the opinions of others.I'm rather uninformed and not particularly interested in politics. Nevertheless, it behooves me to become educated to some degree regarding current political issues. Right now, or at least until I think I might understand politics a bit better, most of my posts on the new blog will consist of collecting articles and ideas which may, at some point, contribute to the formation and elucidation of my own opinions. In other words, I am "collecting opinions" which I have a "budding opinion" about. Make sense?Don't expect stellar political ideas from me on it at present. I have none in this area.
Practical Kabbalah Advice 2007-03-28 05:13:00 ט' בניסן תשס"זIt was asked on a forum I belong to "how to tap into" storm energy. This person's question led me to realize that I tap into storm and weather energy naturally and without intention. This energy can build up in me to annoying proportions and a few nights ago, I had to experiment with various methods by which to release and ground it well enough to enable me to go to sleep. I got rid of enough of it to go to sleep, but I'm not sure that just releasing it wildly (undirected) into the world is a good thing. But, I didn't know what else to do with it. I released it in a rather odd manner and trusted my gut even though it might seem weird if I wrote how I did it. I feel I was deeply guided as I did it and all is fine, but still, I did it in ignorance and I am uncomfortable with remaining ignorant on the matter.I understand that weather can affect all people to greater and lesser degrees - I'm not talking about normal effects the weather can have on biology. Saturn's Bizarre North Polar Hexagon 2007-03-29 22:51:00 Bizarre Hexagon On Saturn
(full article link)Technology News DailyAn odd, six-sided, honeycomb-shaped feature circling the entire north pole of Saturn has captured the interest of scientists with NASA's Cassini mission.NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged the feature over two decades ago. The fact that it has appeared in Cassini images indicates that it is a long-lived feature. A second hexagon, significantly darker than the brighter historical feature, is also visible in the Cassini pictures. The spacecraft's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer is the first instrument to capture the entire hexagon feature in one image. The new images taken in thermal-infrared light show the hexagon extends much deeper down into the atmosphere than previously expected, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) below the cloud tops. A system of clouds lies within the hexagon. The clouds appear to be whipping around the hexagon like cars on a racetrack."It's amazing to see such striking differences on op Read more: Bizarre
