Random Musings Of A Mad Prepper
2008-07-03 15:32:20
Well today you are going to get a bunch of random stuff I have floating in my big head: ~ My wife and I are going to purchase a pop-up camper. We decided on a 2008 Jayco Jay Series 1007 – nothing extravagant. It has the basics, one big bonus is it does include AC and it is on sale because the 2009 models will be in shortly. They are working a deal for me that includes installing a Class III hitc

30 Tips That Will Save Your Life...Maybe
2008-07-02 06:00:14
1.) Field strip MRE’s before putting them in your pack. You can fit three times as many in the same space! 2.) You can survive weeks without food but only days without water. Food is never your first priority. If no water is available refrain from eating as water is required for digestion. 3.) Use a fuel additive like Sta-bil to keep gasoline fresh for up to a year or more. 4.) If you ever ch

Composting
2008-07-01 07:02:48
Composting is something we can all do. It is simple, cuts down on waste and provides a resource for anyone who has a garden. Composting is basically stated is the breakdown of organic material, more simply put rotting. When things decompose they "give back" to nature in the form minerals and nutrients which are greatly beneficial to plants. In order to accelerate this break down you want to mix th

Book Review: Build The Perfect Survival Kit
2008-06-30 13:46:10
Build the Perfect Survival Kit by John D. McCann is a book entirely around the components and building of survival kits. There are big kits, mini-kits, vehicle kits and everything in between. This is a fairly easy read at less than 200 pages, something you should be able to finish in a few hours. Survival kits are a very important aspect of survival. At a very minimum you should have some sort of

Clean SKS And Range Report
2008-06-29 09:00:29
I finally got my SKS cleaned up and took her to the range. Clean up went smoothly and was painless. I disassembled the entire rifle down to parts. Below is a photo of the rifle about 85% disassembled. I further broke down the recoil spring into components and also remove the butt pad and the sling hardware as well. I leached the cosmoline out of the stock by baking it in the oven in a disposable

2008-06-27 15:58:40
Well this Saturday is a big day for me...I am not only going to shoot my SKS for the first time (post will follow for sure), I am also plopping my money down at the local range to sign op for the CCW training class. I have my CCW weapon which is a S&W M&P 9mm Compact ready to rock as soon as I get that magical envelope with my ID from SLED.Note: Check your local laws before doing anything that cou

Book Review: When All Hell Breaks Loose
2008-07-24 20:15:44
Well it is time to Review Cody Lundin's second book When All Hell Breaks Loose : Stuff You Need To Survive When Disaster Strikes. You may remember I reviewed his other book 98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive and gave it a big thumbs up. Our favorite hippie's sophomore effort is quite impressive to say the least. This time around Mr. Lundin writes more of a "survival bible" type book a

Came Across Something Cool In The Garden
2008-07-23 06:00:03
I came across something fascinating in the garden today...something I had only read about. You know hornworms are the bane of anyone who has tomato plants in their garden. I take pleasure in destroying these little beasties. Today I saw a hornworm that had fallen victim to a parasitic wasp called the Braconid Wasp. They lay their egss under the skin of the worm and as they grow the pupae consumes

Basic Gun Maintainance
2008-07-22 18:19:58
People seem to buy guns and hoard ammo and forget one of the most important this with regard to firearms…maintenance. One should have ample supplies of the following: Solvent – needed to get that nasty build up off your weapon. Many firearms will perform fine dirty, many will not. One of the dirtiest calibers in .22, cheaper ammo also may burn dirty as well. This is all well and good if you

Cash Is King!
2008-07-22 06:06:36
Bob Dylan once sang about "Times They are a Changing...". Well is seems they really are. It is funny to hear Americans talking about cutting back or saving money - at least not from my generation. My grandparents were of course, experts on saving money and being frugal. My grandmother always said if you can't pay cash for it...you can't afford it. She is right! (Aren't all grandmothers?) Why is

Saw this guy on Green TV, makes rain barrels. Of course, you can make your own...but if you’re lazy, give this guy some business: Atlanta Rain Barrels Just back from camping again...the pop up is great! The bugs were out in force this weekend so it was nice to have somewhere to run to. Garden is coming along...pulling out a bunch o' tomatoes. Next year I am expanding the tomato section big tim

5 Most Important Tools You Should Have.
2008-07-20 17:06:14
1.) Drill - My recommendation is if you have a cordless drill, have a corded one as well. The corded ones are dirt cheap and most produce more torque than the cordless variety. There is no more useful tool...period. 2.) Table Saw - you won't realize how useful this is until you have one and then don't. I used to use a circular saw for everthing...but for ripping lumber a table saw is king. You do

Doom and Gloom
2008-07-17 06:00:07
OK not really...there are many survival blogs I absolutely enjoy reading. Many are a fantastic mix of doom and gloom and useful information (one fine example of this type of mix is Mayberry - he does a nice job of mixing it up - highly recommend you make him a daily read). Some are all doom and gloom which is fun to read but not very helpful otherwise (at least to me anyways). Listen nothing wron

5 Ways To Save Cash
2008-07-16 06:00:01
Save some cash to buy guns and ammo of course! 1.) DO NOT eat out - Americans blow tons of cash on eating out. Even an innocent trip to McDonalds for lunch can cost between 6-9 bucks! Especially if you eat like me. Don't buy coffee on the way to work brew it yourself and fill one of those big travel mugs. Don't hit the vending machines when you have some hunger pangs...bring snacks from home to w

Be Prepared: Insurance
2008-07-15 17:22:00
One overlooked topic of disaster prep is having adequate insurance. Insurance is a necessary evil and it comes in many forms. The most common we are almost all familiar with is car insurance. If you are a homeowner you may have home insurance...beyond that is uncharted territory for many folks. Car Insurance – for many of us this is the most common form of insurance and the one we are most fami

2008-07-14 16:46:42
Well folks I am back from my weekend excursion with the new pop up camper. I know I promised this Sunday but I was beat after coming home, cleaning the camper, the grill and going shopping with the little woman. I purchased a 2008 Jayco Jay Series Pop Up floor plan 1007. I took a bunch of pictures which are below. There is a table that does not appear in the pictures because when I took the o

2008-07-11 06:00:14
Well if you remember I was supposed to pick up my pop up camper on Tuesday...well the best laid plans of mice and men. My trailer hitch did not arrive until Thursday. I had the hitch installed and I am now picking the camper up today. I am totally excited, me and my wife saved our money to buy this thing...we don't do debt if we can avoid it. Always pay cash if you can and if you can't then maybe

Be Prepared: Emergency Fund
2008-08-09 19:46:56
Many folks may cringe at this post and say how the hell can I do that when I am just scraping by. Let me preface this by saying this is not a "cash on hand" or doomsday fund. The Emergency Fund I am writing about for this post is the "Everyday Emergency Fund"...you know the my car broke down, I broke my arm or I lost my job type fund. This fund needs to be liquid but tough enough to get to keep y

Weekend Roundup Vol. 1
2008-08-08 22:04:40
Well another week comes to a close and I am starting a new feature here at Be A Survivor called "The Weekend Roundup". It will feature links to some posts I enjoyed on other blogs as well as some short tidbits and tips. Sorry for a late post just flew in tonight from Cleveland and it is great to be home. Live Off The Land In The City And Country is the next review here at Be A Survivor. Anyone who reads my blog knows I am very fond of our old buddy Ragnar Benson. For those of you who have never heard of him before Ragnar Benson is actually a pseudonym for one of the "prolific" survival writers out there. I have a

How To Survive A Trip To The Airport
2008-08-06 20:30:34
As most of my readers know...I am in Cleveland, OH this week on business. I am an IT Project Manager and I have to do a fair amount of travel for my job. I am by no means the king of travel but I did accumulate over 30,000 frequent flyer miles last year. I don't mind air travel...I do miss my wife and dogs when I am away for a week or two at time. The thing I hate is airports and airlines. You na

Reading Its Not Just For Entertainment
2008-08-05 09:00:01
One of the most important things you can do in your life is read. Many people read for enjoyment and that is fine to get the old grey cells a firing. I am talking about reading to learn. Almost everything I know I gleaned from reading, I barely ever read fiction. Most books I read are How-to's, biographies and non-fiction. You can learn and immense amount by just picking up a book and reading it.

Emergency Vehicle Kit
2008-08-01 22:39:03
Sorry for the late start folks. Driving back to SC from NJ gave me an idea for a post after driving by hapless motorists stranded on the side of the road. Emergency vehicle kits...I have one and so should you. I can tell you without any shame mine is a work in progress. I need to get some food and water in it...I was thinking of the AquaBlox and Mainstay rations...just need to get around to buyi

My Little Cabin In The Woods
2008-08-01 22:36:09
My next trick is going to somehow convince the wife we need to buy a nice piece of property somewhere. When I say property I mean rural and I am talking at least 20 acres. If I go west in SC property gets real cheap...but we need to save some cash. Believe me I am not hurting or anything me and the wife both have good jobs but we want to buy something and pay for it outright or have as small of a
