Declaration of INTERdependence
2008-07-01 12:36:00
We Americans are proud of our independence, as well we should be. July 4th is quite a day in most communities of our country. Sometimes, though, I think we ought to recognize and celebrate our interdependence. We wave our flags and celebrate independence, but, in reality, we are truly an interdependent nation, an interdependent people. In other words, we depend on each other. Think about just

A Family - and Two Feuds
2008-06-29 20:48:00
I’m somewhat perturbed at my brother Rod. Our family was on “Family Feud” twice, and I’ve been planning to write about it. Rod beat me to the draw, though, and posted his version of our Feud experience in his newspaper column and on his blog. So, here’s a copy of his commentary: Did I ever tell you about the time I lost on Family Feud? Actually, it was the “times”, because I lost tw

Whining About Wine
2008-06-29 20:31:00
We need a wine-drinkers’ protest. It’s time to whine about wine. I’m not much of a drinker, but I enjoy a glass of wine. The emphasis here is on “glass” – not on the wine. Have you ever noticed how much wine a customer gets in a glass at a restaurant or at a party? It is not a glass of wine; it’s a glass with some wine in it – and it’s only a

Could Someone Tell Me Why?
2008-06-25 11:16:00
I’ve never claimed to be a domestic goddess or a domestic engineer – or anything else domestic. This may be why I question certain things. For example, why do we make up beds? Is it because our own moms told us to make ‘em up? Is it because “everybody else does it”? After all, we get out of bed in the morning and get back into the bed that evening. [Actually, maybe we’re getting back o

Limericks?
2008-06-25 06:47:00
I found the following on-line and wanted to share, just because they are so creative. These are famous poems rewritten as limericks. Author unknown. Famous Poems Rewritten as Limericks Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening There once was a horse-riding chap Who took a trip in a cold snap He stopped in the snow But he soon had to go: He was miles away from a nap. The Raven There once was a

Humor - Without a Match!
2008-07-21 16:57:00
I’ve always believed we could find humor in just about anything. Now, having said that, let me share a humorous experience as a result of someone being hard of hearing. Six of us – The Dawg, Chuck and Pat, my mom and my ex-sister-in-law Becky – spent a weekend in the mountains. No TV, no computers (unless we left the mountain home and went into town); we didn’t turn on a radio an

Will YOU Make a Difference? Another Serious Post
2008-07-19 20:37:00
"Not voting is so last season." Kenneth Cole In commemoration of Women's Equality Day, which celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 giving women the right to vote, in various communities there will be a special showing of the 2004 HBO movie Iron Jawed Angels. Iron Jawed Angels stars academy award winner Hillary Swank as Alice Paul (1885 – 1977), a leader of the women's s

Dog Tricks
2008-07-16 21:28:00
A friend told me this story. She and her husband have a friend who owns a black lab. Now, I don’t know who taught this dog his tricks, but apparently this lab liked to eat panties!!! Yes, I said panties. Unbeknownst to the owner, his black lab ate the girlfriend’s panties – and then regurgitated them in the middle of a special occasion: a very nice and very formal sit-down dinner. Yep, it’

Bibles, Bunnies - and My Mom?
2008-07-12 12:02:00
Years ago, Mom was in sales and was extremely successful in her job. One year she won a trip to the Playboy Club at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I know what you’re wondering: What in the world is a woman going to do at a Playboy Club? This was a resort, with fine dining and many other amenities. Oh, yes, she would find plenty to do. On the Sunday after learning she had won this exciting trip, as

The Last Piece of Pie
2008-07-11 10:45:00
When Mom was growing up, there were five kids in the family. Three girls, two boys. (This, by the way, was a “small” family by comparison; her dad was one of 15 children; her mom was one of 12.) One day, as the family meal ended, there was one piece of pie left. Both of the boys, Boice and Lucius, wanted that piece of pie. Someone suggested that, instead of arguing, they should draw straws for

A Serious Post: JonBenet Ramsey
2008-07-10 06:32:00
The news is out. The DNA found on JonBenet Ramsey doesn’t match the DNA of family members. What does this mean to us? For some of us, it means to quit jumping to conclusions. It means “innocent until proven guilty.” It means “Oh, my gosh, I was wrong.” How many of us thought someone in the Ramsey family was responsible for JonBenet’s death? Many of us. Now, members of the Ramsey family

Surgery Date Changed for Rod
2008-08-06 22:44:00
Rod's surgery is set for Monday at MUSC. We all (most of the family) had dinner together tonight. Rod is so very optimistic. He'll be in the hands of an excellent doctor, Dr. Patel, at MUSC. The tumor is just above or near the left ear and it appears this is not a spread of melanoma he had many years ago.

Rod's Surgery is Scheduled
2008-08-05 15:21:00
Rod's surgery is scheduled later this week at MUSC - probably. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, see the post below this one.) He has to see if he can fit surgery into his busy schedule! Newspapers have to be published; campaigns have to be run. If he figures out that he can stop working long enough to have surgery, then it's likely at the end of the week (Saturday.) Rod and all the

Brother Rod
2008-08-05 13:54:00
Brother Rod is 54. I don't mind telling his age because he always refers to me as his "elder" sister. He thinks that's hilarious. Unfortunately, it's also true that I'm his elder sister. Rod is a political consultant (a very successful one), a newspaper publisher, a businessman, entrepreneur, guitarist - and creative genius. To say he is unconventional is an understatement if ever the

Couches, Mice, Potatoes & Pills
2008-08-05 07:05:00
I think I’m a mouse potato. Not a mouse, not a potato, but a mouse potato. I’d like to think this is a cut above a couch potato, but perhaps it isn’t. It’s just swapping one screen for another: instead of being stuck in front of the TV screen, I’m stuck in front of the computer screen, constantly using that little ol’ mouse. But let’s back up just a minute. Where did the phrase &quo

Bulking Up
2008-08-01 14:52:00
Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and join Weight Watchers. It’s offered at our church, so the opportunity couldn’t be much easier. First I was told we’d start our sessions on July 24th, then learned the beginning date was postponed for one week. Whoo-eeee! One more week of eating! So, for a week, I enjoyed every kind of fattening food there is. One might say I “bulked up” – just g

Is This a Phone or What?
2008-07-28 07:29:00
Two days ago I bought a new cell phone. This new phone can do all kinds of things. It synchronizes a calendar on the phone with the calendar on my computer. It takes pictures. It takes videos. It will even access the Internet. I left the phone store SO excited, just like a child with a new toy. The joy didn’t last long. Yes, there are a lot of things this phone can do. The trouble is that I can

Bumper Stickers

Usually whatever shows up on this blog is stuff I've written. But since I'm writing as a "has-been" i.e. older person, I thought the following bumper stickers were worth sharing. Check out my other site - - for non-original resources for speakers. There's humor, inspiration, motivation and information passed along from the Internet.

No, No, A Thousand Times No!
2008-07-23 20:44:00
There are definitive answers, and then there are very definitive answers. I’m not certain Mom knows the difference. Mom and Dad were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. Being quite family-oriented, Mom thought a cruise with the whole family would be a tremendous way to celebrate their 50th anniversary. So, she mentioned this to Dad. Rather emphatically, Dad said,

What Men Do While Women Shop
2008-07-22 18:21:00
When women want to shop - as did a few women on our recent stay in the SC/NC mountains -- men sit on the bench on the front porch instead of looking at the fabulous pottery! Occasionally they shared a few words. Mostly they just sat - and stared at trees.

Just Had to Do It!
2008-10-18 09:51:08
Well, I just had to steal these pictures from daughter Mandy's blog and post them here. I gave her this pacifier for her son, Harrison. Based on her reaction, I didn't think she'd EVER let him use it, but here it is. Doesn't he look just as happy as can be? He's a regular ol' Bubba Joe! After taking the first picture, she planned to go back to using his regular or usual one. Little did she know th

Don't Needle Me!
2008-10-17 21:40:58
I don’t like needles. I am petrified by them.Having blood drawn terrifies me, although by this age, I’m sorta getting used to the procedure. To make it worse, apparently I have what is called rolling veins. They are hard to find, hard to stick and hard to draw blood from. I always tell the phlebotomists that I kick. They think I’m joking.Anyway, back to the needles.Well, for years my daughter

It's World Smile Day!
2008-10-16 18:50:37
Today, October 3rd, is World Smile Day.Now, if you ask me, everyday ought to be World Smile Day. But someone, somewhere at some point decided today is the day of special observance. It gives me a chance to share some of my favorite smiles. Can you look at the pictures at guess at what might have caused those smiles? There are poems, musical lyrics and other great words about smiles. For example, on

It's Mad Hatter Day
2008-10-16 18:49:59
Today (October 6th) is Mad Hatter Day. [For some odd reason, this shows up with a posting date of October 5th but it should be October 6th.]That, of course, reminds me of all kinds of hats. We don’t wear hats like people did many years ago, but there are still some real doozies around.Mad Hatter Day isn’t exactly about hats, though. According to Ari Rapkin, it’s about silliness:Mad Hatter Da

Hold Your Nose
2008-10-16 18:48:17
Exactly one week ago, I met daughter Mandy and her six-month-old son, Harrison, at the Charlotte (NC) airport. We were gathering with other members of the extended family in Charlotte for the Autism Awareness walk the following day.Once we got to the airport parking lot with luggage and the paraphernalia required when traveling with a baby, Mandy said she needed to change Harrison's diaper -- beca

Creativity Can Be Alarming!
2008-10-14 08:59:01
Sometimes creativity causes problems. Like when children are budding artists and want to color outside the lines, even though they are expected to color inside the lines. Or when a creative writer is told to write a news story and to stick with basic facts with no flowery language. Or budding fashionistas who have to wear uniforms to school. When we were growing up, we were encouraged toward creati
