Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer on Tour 2007-03-13 21:30:00 I can still remember listening to Zolof for the first time, after a friend had recommended them. "There's no way to not get into this," he said. He was right. To call their sound 'catchy' would be an extreme understatement. Their infectious power-pop is just chock-full of ridiculously sweet keyboard and guitar solos and over-the-top lyrics. This is feel good, pump-up music at its best. The self-professed "spunk rockers" are on tour right now, definitely try to catch one of their amazing live shows if you can:Mar 13 2007 9:00P The Underground - Hamilton, OntarioMar 15 2007 9:00P Bottoms Up - Brantford, OntarioMar 16 2007 9:00P Zaphod Beeblebrox - Ottawa, OntarioMar 18 2007 8:00P The Formac - Burlington, OntarioMar 19 2007 8:00P Call the Office - London, OntarioMar 20 2007 8:00P L'inco Read more:Destroyer
New Bright Eyes track from Cassadaga 2007-03-12 23:50:00 Saddle Creek has released another track from the upcoming Bright
Eyes album Cassadaga. Titled "No One Would Riot for Less", it starts out slow, quiet and almost ghostly and builds up gradually to a rather emotional climax. The lyrics are amazing, as usual:well death may come invisible or in a holy wall of fire in the breath between the markers on a black I-80 mile from the madness of the governments to the vengeance of the sea yeah everything is eclipsed by the shape of destiny...Personally, as a non-connoisseur of Bright Eyes, I prefer the track "Four Winds". This is definitely still worth a listen though, as long as you pay attention to the lyrics and the musical build-up."No One Would Riot for Less" - Bright Eyes"Four Winds" - Bright Eyes"Tourist Trap" - Bright Eyes (from the Four Winds EP)Bright Eyes: Official SiteBright Eyes: Myspace
Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm 2007-03-12 18:06:00 I had posted the low-quality radio-rip a little while back, and now we finally have a decent quality version. They still don't sound like Muse to me though, I have no idea where people are drawing that comparison from. This is classic Arctic
sound, lyrics, and vocals. Looking forward to hearing a few more songs in the (hopefully) near future."Brianstorm

Illinois EP and Tour 2007-03-12 17:17:00 From the label that brought us Annuals and DeVotchKa, comes Illinois
, Ace Fu Records' newest all-stars. Their new EP What the Hell do I Know? has garnered them quite a following in the last little while, snagged them a spot at SXSW, and a tour frontlining for The Kooks. Honest, fun, and seemingly a mixture of all the staple indie sounds, Illinois is definitely worth a listen, if only to hear them sing "Hello, all you lovely ladies" in some kind of bluesy harmony."Screendoor" - Illinois"Alone Again" - IllinoisIllinois: Official SiteIllinois: Myspace

New Dntel Album - Dumb Luck 2007-03-10 21:17:00 From the genius mind of Jimmy Tamborello - a.k.a. 1/2 of The Postal Service - comes the new Dntel
album Dumb Luck
. 5 years in the making, it's finally due out April 27th on new label Sub Pop. If you like Postal Service, you'll most likely enjoy Tamborello's Dntel work. The beats are still perfect, the spaceyness is still spacey, and the lyrics are still killer (thanks to killer guest appearances). Highlights include Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) on "Breakfast in Bed" and Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) on "Roll On". Other guests include Grizzly Bear and Mystic Chords of Memory. Singles Mixer #1 2007-03-08 04:05:00 I have a few tracks to share so I thought I'd roll out the red carpet for my 1st singles mixer post. I'll most likely do this every couple of weeks as the backlog of things I want to post starts to overwhelm newer stuff I really should be posting. Hope you find some new 'good tunes' as a result.Big thanks to ECEU and guest writer Courtney for introducing me to Kristoffer Ragnstam. His LP, Sweet Bills, jumps from catchy New Wave to synth-pop to funk, refusing to be pegged down to a single genre. His creations are original and enjoyable, both lyrically and musically, and at a time when Sweden's chief export is pop, he brings something refreshingly different to the table. Arcade Fire in the NY Times 2007-03-05 23:23:00 With Neon Bible hitting record store shelves tomorrow in North America, the ever interesting New York Times
has published an article on the church playing septet. Penned by Darcy Frey, the article gives an intimate look into the inner workings of arguably the biggest indie band of our time. Highlight of the article for me:As they were filing out of the sanctuary, however, the band briefly conferred, then took a spontaneous turn and headed for the church door. “Come outside!” Régine yelled to the crowd. And while the audience trailed after them onto the stone steps, the band collected around a megaphone and sang an unrehearsed acoustic version of “Wake Up,” its most popular song from “Funeral.” On disc, “Wake Up” is anthemic ... Here, in the secluded, lamp-lit square, with their breath visible in the wintery night air, the musicians gave it an unexpected intimacy; with an accordion, a dobro and a tambourine, they looked like a circle of carolers, and before the first ch Read more:Arcade Fire
Peter Bjorn & John - Objects of My Affection (Video) 2007-03-02 21:59:00 New video from everyone's favourite Swedes, Peter
, Bjorn
& John. The third video from their album Writer's Block, "Objects of My Affection" is themed on a strange video game in which a girl with no bones falls via gravity (and user input) through a course of floating balls. Yeah. Anyways, enjoy the nasally awesomeness that is this song. Also, just as a quick aside:Peter Bjorn and John = PB & J = Peanut Butter & Jam = conspiracy? New Arctic Monkeys Track 2007-03-02 09:39:00 So the lads from ArcticMonkeys
decided to preview a track off their upcoming album Favourite Worst Nightmare on a radio show hosted by Zane Lowe. The track, "Brianstorm", has drawn mixed reviews. Some liken it to Muse, others to typical Arctic Monkeys, while still others reserve judgment until a better quality copy is available. Set Yourself on Fire Remix Album! 2007-03-01 19:49:00 Looks like we can expect a new/old Stars album this May 22 from Arts & Crafts. It will be a remix album of their 2004 LP Set Yourself
on Fire. The remixers (is that even a word?) will include: Junior Boys, Metric, Final Fantasy, Kevin Drew, Apostle of Hustle, Dears, Stills, Young Galaxy, and others. I've gotta say, I'm pretty stoked on this, especially considering that the Stars new LP won't be out until later this fall. Skip down past the tracklist for a preview of the Junior Boys take on "Sleep Tonight", The Russian Futurists mixing "The First Five Times", and the Most Serene Republic sharing their views on "Ageless Beauty". New Bright Eyes Track & Video 2007-02-28 21:31:00 Groan. Ugh. Sigh. Right, right. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get to the track. "Four Winds" is an upbeat-but-still-pretty-typical-Bright

New Feist! 2007-02-28 20:45:00 Low-key piano bassline, killer vocals, and crazy keyboard action in the chorus. How can you not like the new Feist

Good Shoes 2007-02-26 04:35:00 London indie pop/rock band Good Shoes are definitely a group to watch in 2007. Drawing comparisons to The Futureheads, The Jam, and The Buzzcocks, Good Shoes' catchy, fast-paced riffs matched with lead singer Rhys Jones' candid vocals make for some very danceable tunes. Cold War Kids 2007-02-25 08:46:00 It's hard to believe that there are many out there at this point who haven't heard of the hyped indie rockers Cold War
Kids, but consider this a mop-up operation for all the as-of-yet uninformed. The California band released their first LP in 2006, Robbers and Cowards, on Downtown Records, the same outfit that has signed Art Brut and Gnarls Barkley. Likely the closest thing to a ballad on the album, Hospital Beds builds dramatically with the help of a very epic-sounding piano melody. Abernethy - College Grove [Review] 2007-03-16 22:25:00 Is there a means to stone the wind as recompense for blowing/put out a fire with only a sense that there really should be no fire?Fresh out of my mailbox, courtesy of the good people at Spinning Gold Records, the new Abernethy album CollegeGrove
. Joseph Abernethy's sophmore effort is, if nothing else, original. Listening through the tracks, I've had a really hard time pegging the album down to a specific genre. Other reviews have called it "indie folk" or "space pop" or drawn comparisons to Beirut by classifying it "European". Regardless of genre, this album is almost a perfect soundtrack to the current rainy, pre-spring dreariness that seems to be settling over most of the northern hemisphere, causing us to question our relationships, our life stations, ourselves. It starts out with one of my favourites, "Astronaut", likely the most "pop" song on the album. Abernethy's vocals flow over some rather fantastic classical sounding piano and it slowly picks up into an upbeat but still m

Didn't go to SXSW? Me neither... 2007-03-22 07:28:00 ..and reading all the rave reviews lately is kind of depressing too. If, like me, you were separated from this life-altering, soul-awakening music fest by nearly 3000 kilometers and a mountain of schoolwork, I have a little something to ease the pain. New Voxtrot LP 2007-03-24 02:37:00 Have I slept on this piece of news, or what?I'm sure you all know this already, but Voxtrot, fabled indie rockers from Austin, will be releasing their long-awaited first LP this May. They dropped three EP's last year, which, in conjunction with their awesome live shows, have gained them mucho praise from the big-name bloggers and mags that we all read. The new self-titled album, Voxtrot, will be out May 22nd via Beggars Group in North America and playloudrecordings in the U.K.Tracklist:1. "Introduction" - 3:322. "Kid Gloves" - 4:233. New tracks from Low and The National 2007-03-25 07:09:00 Double post!First comes the new song from Low's Drums and Guns, "Breaker". I really don't know how to describe this fantastic track. The word 'hollow' comes to mind when I hear the organ, or what sounds like an organ, but that definitely doesn't do the song justice. It's even a little upbeat, in a downcast sort of way. You'll just have to listen for yourselves, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it."our bodies break and our blood just spills and spills/but here we sit debating math""Breaker" - LowLow: Official SiteLow: MyspaceFind four more downloadable Low tracks

. Their new album, Boxer, comes out May 22nd on Beggar's Banquet. A follow up to their critically acclaimed 2005 album, Alligator, this new album has been very highly anticipated. The preview track, "Fake Empire", begins as a sort of sweeping piano ballad, then the drums hit, then the horns. If this song is indicative of the rest of the album,
The Morning Benders - Boarded Doors EP 2007-03-29 04:51:00 Holy awesome EP, Batman. I must admit: I was originally sold on The Morning
Benders when Stereogum called them Shins-y, but now I'm digging these 4 guys from the Bay Area solely on how awesome their music is. I'm about a month late on the Boarded Doors
hype train, but I'm sure there are people out there that haven't had the opportunity to read about and listen to these tracks. This one's for you!The first track I have for you guys is called "Damnit Anna". Tambourine + Beatles-esque vocals + something that sounds like a maraca = instant winner."You say you got a soul to sell?""Damnit Anna" - The Morning BendersTrack the second, "Last Today", is musically stronger than "Damnit Anna", incorporating some nice electric guitar solos, melancholy vocals, and, again, that awesome maraca."and I can't figure out how I ever ended up this way""Last Today" - The Morning BendersThe Morning Benders: Official Site (pick up Boarded Doors here)The Morning Benders: Myspace
The Minor Canon - No Good Deed Goes Unpunished [Review] 2007-03-31 03:18:00 The MinorCanon
began as a solo project of Paul Larson's, so I might as well put his credentials on the table. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, takes care of the guitar work on the new Dntel album Dumb Luck, and, last but not least, membership in LA indie bands Athalia and Strictly Ballroom. He's been around, and so have The Minor Canon, playing with bands like The Little Ones and Mystic Chords of Memory.Having said all that, I can tell you it's unnecessary to even think about it. This record stands on it's own. The Minor Canon have actually renewed my faith in the sentimental ballad. At first listen, I wasn't sure what differentiated No Good Deed Goes Unpunished from every other sad indie pop record out there. I mean, there are the immediate differences, the six-piece band, the horn section, the occasional second drummer, but in today's music world you need more. Then, on the second listen through, it hit me: Larson isn't just singing lyrics he wrote to sell records,
The Swimmers - Fighting Trees 2007-04-02 05:57:00 I'm really getting into The Swimmers
lately, a four piece from Philly that, to be honest, are really not that hard to like. I think it was everybody cares that first turned me on to them, and I definitely owe him somewhere between one and three pints for that favor. The music itself is easy on the ears, sounding a fair bit like The Shins or Rogue Wave or maybe even The New Pornographers. Enough of my ramblings though, let's get to the tracks. The first one, "FightingTrees
", is just fantastic. It's ethereal without being too heavy, and I definitely think there's some harp in it. Harp. Really, how great is that? As far as I can tell, the song tells of a homeward journey of some kind, likely via ship and around the turn of the century. The "going home" theme seems to be an important one for The Swimmers."Started with a plan, shining to the end/to set out and see our home again""Fighting Trees" - The SwimmersThe second track, "Heaven", is a little more upbeat. It's led by piano at fir
New Music! Julie Doiron and Jeremy Warmsley 2007-04-05 04:57:00 Sorry my updates seem to be less regular as of late. Exam periods are notoriously busy and, this being my last undergraduate exam period, it's extra busy. I haven't forgotten about you though! I have two great artists/songs to share and I'm thinking you're definitely gonna dig these tracks.Julie
Doiron is a drastically under-appreciated, Canadian singer-songwriter. Well, we appreciate her here in Canada (she won a Juno!) but the rest of the world hasn't really caught on yet. Hopefully a few of you will get into her music. It's no real departure from the typical 'female vocalist + guitar = music' equation, but that doesn't mean it isn't great...because it is. There's just something so heartfelt about her voice, it really draws you into the song.
