An athlete's nightmare - My fair share of injuries
2008-06-23 07:10:22
Over the last 18 months I had my fair share of injuries, most likely due to the fact that I haven't been doing any sport for the period prior to me quitting smoking. I have always relied on my good old car or public transport. I was even tired from just walking to the shops, I meant the clothing shop I had two main injuries, the first one started last year in March 2007 which was later on in Augus

2008-06-22 18:09:10
Tomorrow, Sunday 22nd of June 2008 the Crowthorne Triathlon will go ahead but without me. This was the first triathlon I noticed last year and started me thinking about taking up triathlon, I was hoping to compete in this years edition but due to an earlier injury, an admission to hospital earlier this week and the fact that my parents are coming over from Belgium I will not start in thi

2008-06-20 16:41:00
Hello and welcome to my first blog entry. In summary, I am a 38 years man living in the United Kingdom but born and educated in Belgium. I used to smoke a lot from the young age of 14 until 3 years ago. In the beginning of 2005 I decided to give up smoking and in May 2005 I completely quit smoking which was the turning point for me to become more sportive and start working on my health. I decided

Big Cow - Emberton County Park Sprint Triathlon - Race Report
2008-07-06 10:21:37
We just returned from the Big Cow Sprint triathlon in Olney and I'm pleased with the results. At this moment I'm feeling a little bit too tired to write up a whole race report but I will in the next 24 hours. In summary I ended up 3 minutes worse then expected in 1:28, the official times are not published yet and I'm fearing that my bike and run results are not recorded.  I was out of course on

Lewis Hamilton vs Jenson Button in Bath Triathlon?
2008-07-04 04:52:24
Would it not have been great to see Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton  fighting it out in a triathlon race? Earlier this week Lewis agreed to participate in a triathlon in order to prove that he is in a better condition than Jenson, actually he said he is the fittest man in the Formula One world. Jenson would even have offered to pay £10k to charity if Lewis was able to beat him. Bear in mind t

Triathlon Open Water Swim practice in South East London
2008-07-03 18:35:42
Once you become serious about triathlon you will need to practice your swim skills and drills in open water, the list of triathlon events with a pool swim is very short and you will not be able to find an Olympic distance with a pool start. At least I haven't seen one. I decided to start swimming in the open water earlier this year, I started with my first open water swim on the 26th of April wit

YogaMazing - Yoga for triathletes
2008-07-02 03:49:34
Last year after I was diagnosed with my stress fracture on my left tibia I had to hop around with a removable cast. At the same time I followed physiotherapy due to the tightness on my left leg. I had stretch on a staircase my calfs at least 5 times a day for several minutes. This made me realize that being flexible is crucial to any type of endurance training and will prevent future injuries so

Big Cow - Emberton County Park - Sprint Triathlon
2008-07-01 03:59:10
I have decided and will participate in this weekends Big Cow Sprint Triathlon in Olney. Olney is not too far away from Bedford but 75 miles from my home, which is a 90 minutes drive according to Google. Distance was the one factor that was holding me off from participating but when looking at the picturesque Emberton County park race venue I thought that it could well be worthwhile the drive. A co

Tight IT Band and knee problem
2008-06-30 06:11:48
Ever since the running race at the end of January I have been suffering with my left leg. Initially I had severe pain in my groin, see my previous post, this is much better now but I feel pain in my knee and feel tight on the outside of my leg. I have been reading about the IT Band lately and dread to think that I might have this syndrome. During my run yesterday I was absolutely fine but afterwar

What a great training weekend!
2008-06-29 18:04:38
With the weather being just fabulous to train outside I took advantage and went for a nice bike ride of 69 km (43 miles). Normally I don't ride this type of long rides and try to keep it limited to about 40/45 km. But I was feeling fine, the weather was great and I had time. At 55 km I had a bit of a break down and my legs felt tired, had a rest of a few minutes and recovered very quickly. This mo

Nokia Royal Windsor Triathlon 2008 -Race Report
2008-06-27 12:21:05
Well the Nokia Royal Windosor triathlon was the first Sprint Triathlon for me and hopefully many to follow. The build up to the event went along with some nerves days before, the nerves were mainly caused because of the problems I have been having with my left leg. The race was in a great race venue, beautiful scenery along the biking track and running next to the castle of the Queen of England,

My Triathlon training plan - or not?
2008-06-25 07:49:02
Last year (2007) when I decided to participate in my first Triathlon I searched the net for decent training materials. The triathlon season does only gets well on its way until May so I had plenty of time starting to train in October, a plan of 5 months with a little bit of contingency should make me ready for my first Olympic triathlon in June 2008. The plan I choose is a swim focused one, with t

Triathlon on television
2008-06-24 07:01:56
With the time it takes to train, travel up and down to London for work, not much time remains to watch television. Furthermore the time spend in front of the box has to be shared with the family and I tend to loose the choice between Eastenders and Triathlon.Anyway lucky that both Channel 4 and Channel 5 has chosen to broadcast at the most infamous times of the day a spot of Triathlon racing, whic

Bananaman Triathlon - I've suffered ... below par!
2008-07-20 15:49:49
At this moment I'm a little bit too tired for writing up the whole race report, I will publish something in the coming 24 hours. For some reason I was about 13 minutes slower than my own expectations, I'm trying to figure out what went wrong or maybe my expectations where too ambitious! Who knows? I had a great support today with a few people coming to watch me which made my day so enjoyable, ne

Bananaman Triathlon - Last minute tips!
2008-07-20 04:31:55
This afternoon I will participate in the Bananaman Triathlon and I' looking forward to this one. The weather looks to be great, not too hot but not too cold either. Whilst packing my bag this morning I was mentally visualizing the T1 transition. Here are some short last minute tips which could prove to be useful. Visualize T1 transition and T2 transition.Start the bike leg with a lower gear with

I'm in love with my Garmin Forerunner 301
2008-07-16 08:40:47
I just cannot live without it, me and my Garmin Forerunner 301 has been spending most of all my training hours together. We cannot be separated during training. We have gone through a lot together, we have suffered together, on the bike and whilst running. We have climbed hills, we have gone faster than the allowed speed on the roads, we have been there for each other through thick and thin, in

Swim/bike training and reducing my carbon footprint!
2008-07-15 13:44:38
Yesterday I went for a swim training during the evening and normally I tend to jump into my car with my swim bag. But yesterday I jumped on my bike went for a 20K bike and then head for the swimming pool. After my session at the pool I returned immediately home on my bike.I can see two advantages with this: 1) I had two workouts in one hit 2) I reduced my carbon footprint but the disadvantage was

Bananaman Humanrace Triathlon 2008 - Race expectations
2008-07-14 13:07:52
This Sunday, 20th of July 2008, I will be participating in the Bananaman sprint Triathlon in Dorney Lake at Eton College rowing facility. The race is organized by HumanRace so that should all go smoothly if I may compare with the Windsor Triathlon. This venue carries a special place in my heart because it was here where I saw for the first time a triathlon race live in action and I have been visua

Triathlon for Bowel Cancer - From London to Paris or Arch to Arc
2008-07-10 14:04:07
I wanted to write this blog to raise awareness about a forthcoming charity triathlon event . Six persons will raise money for Bowel Cancer by running from Marble Arch in London to Dover through the garden of England for 87 miles, swimming the channel between the UK and France for 20 miles and if this is not enough they will sit on their saddles for another 200 miles to finish in the Arc de Triomp

Snail runner - Concentrate on your weakest points!
2008-07-09 13:33:13
At this moment my weakest point is running which is holding me back of trying to accomplish my 2008 objective. My aim was to complete an Olympic Triathlon, but I fear that I'm not yet able to run 10K after a bike ride of 40K, due to my ongoing injury. The swim part must be my second weakest point and biking must be my strength. in Triathlon the swim is the shortest of the 3 exercises and I'm seek

Big Cow Emberton County Park Sprint Triathlon - Full Race Report
2008-07-07 18:05:33
This was my second triathlon, this was a sprint triathlon over a distance of 750m swim, 20K bike and 5k run. The official distance of the run is 5.3 K. Emberton County Park is a lovely park, which is very nicely maintained and is set in a beautiful area with nice race conditions. The run was inside the park and the swim was in the lake. The bike track is outside the park, which takes you through

Triathlon - Beginners gear and equipment
2008-07-30 14:10:32
Last year when I decided to take up Triathlon I had a massive problem whereby I not only had to concentrate on the training strategy, fitting the training in around my current lifestyle but I needed the right equipment and Triathlon gear. I started spending lots of time on websites that supposed to deliver only the best gear which would make me a champion without doing any training. I can guarante

Road Rage against cyclist - Why? Please stop it now!
2008-07-24 17:26:32
I got very upset when I was reading this blog entry, IronMan Life had witnessed a road rage accident and called 911, the man was arrested later and charged with criminal assault. I just cannot imagine myself even dear to think about doing such a thing. What is a second or two if you have to move out of the way for a cyclist. It is really not worth it! When I was living in Belgium and also in The

Finding the right balance between Work / Family and Triathlon
2008-07-24 17:08:50
I find it sometimes very hard to find the right balance between the three major parts of my life at the moment: Work, family and Triathlon. Luckily, my second half is just fantastic and accepts the things I would like to achieve and I get 100% unconditional support. She is the prime reason which made me complete my third triathlon last weekend. At the same time I feel guilty as she works, looks

Bike Ride- New Forest National Park
2008-08-10 17:21:16
After a week of spending quality time with the family I decided to have a long bike ride today. My aim was 3 hours on the bike. I read in Cycling Weekly a ride in Hampshire and was convinced that I should be able to complete this ride. Living about 60 miles from the New Forest National Park and not knowing the area at all was a true challenge. In preparation I used the MapMyRide.com website wh

Inspirational books!
2008-09-10 04:59:09
After reading the following two fantastic books my batteries are fully charged and my motivation is very high. The first book I read is the story about Lance Armstrong victories in the Tour de France after beating cancer. This is truly an inspirational read, which had me hooked for a few days during my holidays. Bear in mind that the book and the story is a bit of an American hero way, neverthel

Got back from holidays and I'm all excited
2008-09-03 03:53:21
We returned Sunday night from a brilliant holiday in Egypt with temperatures climbing easily above 40 degrees Celsius. I haven't seen a  single cloud during our 14 day visit. When we touched down in Gatwick the rain started and the sky was cluttered full with grey rainy clouds. I wish I was somewhere else right now. What about on a swimming pool? Or inside the bar and having a refreshment? Or ma
