With apologies to Edgar Allan Poe 2006-10-19 23:50:00 I've always believed it is not a coincidence that Halloween and Election day are so close together. The results of an election can be more frightening than anything the goblins can cough up. With that frame of mind, I now present a new poem.

LOC's Quote of the Day 2006-10-18 22:20:00 "To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us, and make a broken tyrant a latter-day Arab hero. It would have taken us way beyond the imprimatur of international law bestowed by the resolutions of the Security Council, assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an Read more:Quote
Sadness 2006-10-18 20:30:00 Is there anyone out there who feels a little more intimidated about speaking out against the war or George W. Bush? What if Bush fell back on his old argument that dissent about his policies in Iraq can hurt the morale of our fighting men and women? What if Bush then decided that anyone who hurt the morale of our troops should be considered an enemy combatant? Would he throw us all into a Gulag Read more:Sadness

Iraq - for better or for worse 2006-10-17 04:56:00 I don't know about you, but when I heard the details about Iraq

Two weeks between democracy and single party government 2006-10-25 02:45:00
Exactly two weeks from now, we will know whether the majority of Americans have decided that our freedoms and liberties will be collateral damage or if they want to crawl out of the hole the Bush administration has placed us in.
Right now, the Right is frightened of losing their single
party national government. How frightened are they? Enough that the far Right Wing organization "Progress for America" has started running an ad exploiting the fears of a nation. The ad warns that ONLY the right can protect us against terrorism.
Okay, whatever they say. But let's take a look at who has actually been terrorizing the country for the past five years. To terrorize someone, you have to instill fear. If you ask me, the Republicans have been doing a grand job of frightening millions of Americans. The odd part - although not unexpected - is the right really starts trying to scare Americans the closer we get to an election. Don't they have anything else to run on? Are they actually Read more:democracy

Hmmmm????? 2006-10-29 07:00:00 During the debate between Dr. Tom Hayhurst and Beltway insider, Rep. Mark Souder, Dr. Tom brought up the fact that contractors need to hire more Iraqis to do the rebuilding.

Reading beyond the headlines 2006-10-27 23:45:00
A recent headline said, "New Jersey ruling a threat to heterosexual marriage".
I'm not quite sure how to read that. Is this what people are so afraid of? Is the Right actually concerned that if gays are allowed to marry or have a civil union that it will destroy the institution of marriage? How ridiculous can you get?
Just because New Jersey or Massachusetts might allow gay marriages doesn't mean heterosexuals will suddenly start thinking about becoming gay. The only thing that can destroy the institution of marriage is irreconcilable differences. The only difference gay marriage would make to society at large is the simple fact that gay couples would finally be allowed the benefits that the rest of us have when we get married. What I'm trying to understand is why this scares the conservatives so much. Could it be a money thing? Yes, corporations would suddenly have to give benefits to gays as well as straights, but this isn't the answer.
The bottom line is this: Bias. Read more:Reading

Souder Does Not Represent the Interests of this District - Part 2 2006-10-27 05:58:00 The Souder-Hayhurst Debate - The first 15 minutes
After watching the debate last night I decided I would post my general thoughts and then go into detail outlining the mistruths, mischaracterizations, distortions and ridiculousness of Souder's comments. Apologies for the length of this post but there's just too much to let slide.
Let me start by saying that Dr Tom looked a little nervous and he could've rebutted some of Souder's positions and mischaracterizations more forcefully - something I now intend to do (hindsight is always 20/20 I know). Having said that, he still seemed more comfortable than the 12 year incumbent Souder. He also continuously stressed his military service which was an excellent strategy. It's well known that Souder started out his political career as a poor debater and public speaker but I was shocked at what little improvement he's actually made. A true statesman should have the ability to inspire and lead with his words - it's hard to imagine anyone bei Read more:Represent
