bus bombings
Members of al Qaeda
-linked group accused of bombings, planning attacks against UN force.
BEIRUT - Members of an Al-Qaeda-linked group have admitted carrying out last month's deadly Lebanon bus bombings, a government official said Tuesday.
Six members of the group are in custody, some of them nationals of once-dominant neighbour Syria, and all have confessed to their part in the February 13 bombings which killed three people and wounded 18 in a mountainous area northeast of Beirut, the official said.
Another two members of the cell of the Fatah-Islam group are still at large, the official added, asking not to be identified.
It was the first time a Lebanese official had spoken of the arrest of suspects in the bombings.
The detained suspects confessed to carrying out the bombings from a rented flat in the Ashrafiyeh area of east Beirut. The rental was made in the name of Syrian Mustafa Shiyo, the official said.

Video: Insurgents Kidnap German Mother and Son 2007-03-11 02:32:04
DUBAI (Reuters) - A little-known Iraqi Islamist militant group said on Saturday it would kill two hostages, a German
woman and her son, in 10 days unless Berlin withdraws its 3,000 troops from Afghanistan. The Arrows of Righteousness group posted a video on a Web site used by militant groups, including al Qaeda, showing a weeping Hannelore Marianne Krause, 61, urging Germany to heed the militants' demands.
"We give the German government 10 days from the date of this statement to announce and start the withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan, otherwise ... they will not even see the bodies of these two agents," said a masked man, reading a statement on the video.
He did not give the date of the statement. The footage, posted on Saturday, showed Krause's passport.
German newspapers have said the woman, married to an Iraqi physician, and her son are either Germans living in Iraq permanently or Iraqis with German nationality. Read more:Insurgents

News: September 11 Mastermind 'Confesses' 2007-03-15 08:51:51
The alleged mastermind of the September
11, 2001 attack in the US has admitted to being responsible, the US says.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, held prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, also admitted to being behind other al-Qaeda operations, according to a transcript of a hearing released by the Pentagon on Wednesday.
"I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z," Mohammed said in the transcript.
He admitted to being Osama bin Laden's operational director for "the organising, planning, follow-up and execution of the 9/11 operation". Mohammed's confession was recorded by a US military representative during a hearing at the Guantanamo prison camp in Cuba on Saturday.
The hearing was being held to determine whether Mohammed, a Pakistani national, can be defined as an "enemy combatant". Mohammed also claimed responsibility for an attack on New York's World Trade Centre in 1993, the 2002 bombing of a Bali nightclub in Indonesia and an attempt to take down two American aircr Read more:Mastermind

in 'Operation Volcano' clearing a Taliban
base near the Kajaki Hyro-electric dam in Afghanistan.
British military authorities say that 25 insurgent compounds have been cleared from the area around a major dam in Afghanistan.
Operation Volcano was aimed at creating a safe zone around the Kajaki Dam so that the structure can be repaired, The Telegraph reported. The dam in northern Helmand Province is capable of providing electric power for 1.8 million people.
The dam has been "the site of regular insurgent mortar attacks over the past two months and civilians have been forced from their homes leaving the dam largely unserviceable," a military statement said.
During the six-week campaign, British commandos also came under mortar attack regularly.
British officials hope that restarting the dam will improve the lives of people living in Helmand Province, now Afghanistan's major opium-producing area. Read more:Clear
News: Iraqi PM Braves Insurgent Zone To Talk Peace 2007-03-14 16:13:14
IRAQ'S Shiite prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, travelled to the city of Ramadi yesterday on his first visit to the heartland of Sunni Arab insurgents fighting his US-backed government.
Mr Maliki, who flew aboard a US military helicopter and was accompanied by his interior and defence ministers, met tribal leaders, local government officials and Iraqi
army commanders on his highly symbolic trip.
In a gesture apparently aimed at reconciling Sunnis and Shiites, Mr Maliki pledged to restore services in the vast province of Anbar, scene of a four-year-old rebellion.
Sunni Arabs, who were dominant under Saddam Hussein, fear that the Shiite empowerment following US-sponsored elections will seal their political and economic doom.
Many people in Ramadi said they hoped the prime minister's visit would improve things. "We hope he brings us security and stability," said Ahmed Hussein Ali, a 35-year-old teacher.
Mr Maliki, who has called for national reconciliation to end a w Read more:Braves
