JigsawBars have arrived!
2006-12-18 20:07:18
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) The JigsawBars have finally arrived!  They came in on Friday.  And they taste even better than I remember them.  (More on this in a second.) Since everyone at Jigsaw has been so busy with other things, we don't have all the marketing and promotional stuff ready to go quite yet.  (Sorry Pat!)  Hoping to get it all finished up by Tuesday or Wednesday. Back to the "taste" thing.  We worked on the formulas for both Chocolate and Coconut Almond for over a year.  15 fomulas of chocolate.  9 formulas of Coconut Almond.  We worked with a candy manufacturer that started doing nutritional bars about 8 years ago.  The goal was the balance taste and nutrition to create a great-tasting, but healthy snack.  Personally, I think we NAILED it on both bars.  But taste is a subjective thing. Excited about finally having the bars in stock, I brought a box of each of these with me to happy hour on Friday with my friends.  The reactions were pretty interesting.  4

I am Time Magazine's Person of the Year
2006-12-18 19:20:41
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) That's right, Time Magazine named me as it's person of the year.  :) Somewhat ironically, this article was just forwarded to me from Andrea, the "community manager" of the new BazaarVoice user reviews feature we added to JigsawHealth.com about 30 days ago.  It's sort of scary to make yourself vulnerable to negative reviews.  I know our products are great, but not every single product pleases everyone all the time.  (Bob Marley taught that business lesson to me.) But I elected to add BazaarVoice to our website because I felt like customers were searching for this kind of information anyways, so let's just put it directly on every product page.  Let the chips fall where they may.  The winning products should invariably sell better.  And the products that no one seems to like, we'll just drop from the catalog.  In the end, both the customer and the business win.  Since we just recently added this feature, we only have about 150 reviews.  We starte

MondayMorningMemo
2006-12-28 09:42:27
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Do you subscribe to Roy H. William's MondayMorningMemo?  I just met Roy at the beginning of December while in Austin attending a 3-day class at the Wizard Academy.  (No, it's not some kind of Harry Potter thing...) Anyways, the December 25 MondayMorningMemo was an excellent compilation of "ready to begin the new year?" type quotes.  Give it a read.  And personally, I'm really looking forward to 2007.  Oh-six had it's share of ups and downs.  Day to day, there were more ups than downs, but the downs did make a noticeable appearance.  Still, hope springs eternal and I have very high hopes for oh-seven.  You?

FDA Approves Cloned Animals
2006-12-29 07:15:53
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Where do I begin?  I heard a 10 second mention on CBS evening news last night that the FDA is ready to declare cloned animals as safe to eat.  My first thought was, "Is there anyone out there watching this that didn't just say, 'Awesome, let's go get some cloned brisket.' ?"  Then tonight I hear a snippet, "...after a 5 year study by the FDA, the cloned animals are virtually indistinguishable and therefore shouldn't need special labeling..."  Is there a beef, chicken, pork, lamb, emu, or ostrich shortage that I don't know about? Is meat now so expensive that no one can afford the "real thing?"  If it's so expensive, blame whoever is buying the "Beef, it's what's for dinner" commercials.  Air-time is PRICEY! (Also, keep in mind of course that the "real thing" in most grocery stores is pumped full of growth hormone, antibiotics, and fed a nutrient-deficient diet of grain only.) What possibly was the justification for cloned meat that is

FDA's rogue bureaucracy to face intense scrutiny in "07
2006-12-29 19:41:16
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Email from Charlie Brown of Consumers for Dental Choice:FDA's rogue bureaucracy to face intense scrutiny in "07 As 2007 dawns, the stars are aligning for fundamental changes in how the government regulates (by that I mean fails to regulate) mercury fillings.  Thus much is clear:  the clock has run out for the pro-mercury bureaucrats at FDA's Center for Devices, a bureau so out of the mainstream the Supreme Court calls it "FDA's neglected stepchild"  The Center's cover-up of the mercury, its refusal to do an environmental impact statement, its decision to allow amalgam sales with no proof of safety, and its arrogant attitude toward its legal duties will all be addressed in different forums in 2007.  This rogue bureaucracy's biggest mistake was using a bogus "white paper" to try to strong-arm two scientific panels into acquiescing in their cover-up of the science.  Using a public relations offensive over Labor Day weekend of 2006,

Study: MRSA Infections Treated With Colostrum and Whey
2007-01-03 02:56:25
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) For the diehard science readers of this blog, take a look the latest study with MRSA infections and Ai/e10, which is the active component of Cyto-Ess Immune Support, a bio-engineered lacteal complex.  This was published last Friday in the Journal of Immunopharmacology.Study : A Pilot Study of an anti-MRSA Bio-Engineered Lacteal Complex (anti-MRSA BLC) in a Murine Septicemia Model Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important pathogen of humans and other animals, causing septicemia, abcessation, toxemia, and other infectious diseases. Refined bioengineered lacteal complex (BLC), made specifically against MRSA, is a novel complex of low molecular weight immunogenic and antimicrobial molecules. It was evaluated in vivo using a mouse model of MRSA-induced peritonitis.  Intraperitoneal dosing of anti-MRSA BLC demonstrated a therapeutic effect (83% survival) against an intraperitoneal MRSA challenge that caused 100% mortality in untrea

Starbucks NYC Bans Trans Fat (and what you actually need to know about trans fat labelling)
2007-01-03 08:03:43
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Heard a little trans fat blip on the news tonight.  Something about Starbucks cutting out trans fat from their stores in NYC, as well as 9 other cities.  Mostly, this means dropping certain backed goods that contain partially hydrogenated oils.  Googled and found this easy to understand "mom's" article about how hard it is to stay away from trans fat.  As the danger of trans fat becomes more well known and you try to protect your family, the most important take away is this: ...some of the foods labeled trans-fat free aren't. "That packaging can be deceptive," he says. "When it says 0 g trans fat, by law it can contain up to half a gram per serving." A few servings a day, and you could find yourself in dangerous trans-land. Still, it is possible to shop smart. Stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats Markets have instituted a total ban. Otherwise, scrutinize the ingredients list; the words hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated are the number one ti

Fertility and Pistachios?

Where we're really at in Iraq in 700 words
2007-01-05 10:47:32
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Victor Davis Hanson just penned the 700 (give or take) best words on the situation in Iraq that I have read from anyone.  There's no way to excerpt it.  Just go read the essay.  If the Left can pause the "Bush lied" chanting, I think they might actually agree with Davis' assessment.

Minimum Wage
2007-01-05 10:33:42
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) George Will pulls out some interesting stats that I had never seen before with minimum wage in his article, Raising the minimum wage is still a bad idea: Most of the working poor earn more than the minimum wage, and most of the 0.6 percent (479,000 in 2005) of America's wage workers earning the minimum wage are not poor. Only one in five workers earning the federal minimum live in families with household earnings below the poverty line. Sixty percent work part-time and their average household income is well over $40,000. (The average and median household incomes are $63,344 and $46,326 respectively.) Forty percent of American workers are salaried. Of the 75.6 million paid by the hour, 1.9 million earn the federal minimum or less, and of these, more than half are under 25 and more than a quarter are between 16 and 19. Many are students or other part-time workers. Sixty percent of those earning the federal minimum or less work in restaurants and bars

Bye-Bye Taco Shells :(
2007-01-05 10:56:52
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Two days ago I blogged about Starbucks NYC dumping trans fat.  While eating my favorite meal tonight, I just happened to grab the box of Old El Paso Stand-and-Stuff crispy corn tortilla shells.  I flipped out when I read that there are 2.5 grams of trans fat in 2 taco shells.  I'm not fat, but I love my tacos and I eat 4 in one sitting.  We eat tacos once a week.  It's one of my favorite meals.  Damn you delicious crispy taco shells!  Ignorance is bliss. The 4 remaining shells are now in the trash.  But this just goes to show how easy it is to be careless!  Grrrrr...

Interesting Medical Ethics Story
2007-01-09 08:48:02
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Long, but interesting questions about medical ethics.  From MedpageToday:  Dr. DeBakey was 97-years-old and had decided that he didn't want to endure the surgery necessary to repair the defect. With an irony worthy of Greek tragedy, Dr. DeBakey himself had helped to develop the procedure and vascular graft in 1953, using a Dacron sheath he devised at home on his wife's sewing machine.                                                         Yet Dr. DeBakey eventually underwent the grueling seven-hour procedure. "If they hadn't done it, I'd be dead," he said.                                                         The surgery, performed in early February 2006, bought Dr. DeBakey at least one more year, but at the cost of a long, painful, and difficult recovery marked by kidney failure and dialysis, a tracheostomy, six weeks of mechanical ventilation, parenteral feedings, and the possibility -- although not the eventuality -- of brain dama

Good ID discussion
2007-01-11 18:45:24
I thought I would pull this question and reply out of the comments buried down in the blog.  I just thought it was pretty good on both sides of the question.  For some reason, ID and Autism always generates the most interest and banter.  I think both topics are interesting and important. (I did edit my reply since I saw that I made a few typos and could have made a few things clearer.) First from Alex: I had a man walk up to me one time in a grocery store and he pointed out the sign that says "Please wash hands before using the scoop". We were at the Sun Harvest in the nut/seed/candy section where they have the little bins with scoops to get your nuts. He asked, "back when Jesus lived, did they wash their hands before they touched their food? No. They didn't have anti-microbial soap back then!" he exclaimed. "They didn't know about germs or microscopic life and bacteria." He said, "I have disproved every religion...mathematically. I do not have time to teach you, but here is a

The evolution of Sex
2007-01-11 19:47:45
I have mentioned this blog site  before. "The ID Update".  I continue to recommend it to you as the best blog I have found summarizing all the news and articles being written about ID.  Obviously, it is on the ID side but they do publish things that are NOT terribly supportive of ID.  This article of an interview with Dr.Ronald Numbers is an example.  Good article about the history of Creationists.  Numbers is not an ID'er but he acknowledges that ID and Creationists have very little in common.  Having read stuff from both groups I would agree. However, the article that I want to call your attention to is this one. "It Takes Two to Tango and Three to Make a Race".  It deals very well with the issue of the evolution of not just a human species, but the obvious need that humans had to evolve with fully working parts to be MALE and FEMALE humans.  Mind boggling the chances that random events, natural selection, mutations would happen to develop either a male or a female human.  But imag

Health Tips from DukeNukem
2007-01-18 21:49:41
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) That's right, DukeNukem himself is a customer, dare I say a fan, of Jigsaw Health .  Here's the story... On December 18, I announced that our new Jigsaw Bars had finally arrived.  In that post, I said that I would send out complimentary samples to volunteers that would be willing to post online reviews.  The caveat was that reviews had to be authentic.  I wasn't looking for paid shills.  (Btw, the offer is still open.  Email your mailing address to patrick at jigsawhealth dot com.) Scott Miller was among several people that answered the call.  After doing a little research, I realized that Scott Miller is the creator of DukeNukem -- one of the most popular video games of all time -- and a few dozen other games.  But far from being a 350lb computer geek, Scott is WAY into health! We got into a long email conversation and I asked him if I could turn that into an interview to post on the blog.  Here's his story and a few health tips: 1) How and w

An open letter (poem) to DHL
2007-01-27 00:14:39
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) Dear DHL,I used to get phone calls, 'bout packages bouncing down halls.Crushed cardboard, or lost in trucks, Thanks for nothing you...guys.  I wrote this poem during the wee hours of the night about a month ago.  It was late.  I was loopy.  I felt like telling our new Fedex rep (in a non-professional way) that we were pleased with their service since switching from DHL.  Jigsaw Health had been shipping with DHL for about 8 months.  1 of out of every 15 packages was being lost, smashed, or delayed.  One customer called to tell us that a DHL carrier literally threw a box down her hallway.  Nice. My review of DHL?  They suck.  (Lord Google, please find this and rank it highly.)  If you want to write a poem about your favorite shipment company, leave a comment or trackback. In a related note, isn't it ironic that the new UPS whiteboard commercials use a song ("Such Great Heights") from a band named the Postal Service?

Jigsaw Bars, More Blog Reviews

(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) New blog reviews on Jigsaw Bars from just the last few days... When I opened the box and started examining the list of ingredients, I quickly realized that something was missing from that list. I read the list of ingredients again just to be sure that I did not miss anything..."  Read the rest of Shane's Jigsaw Bar review. The Smoking Tooth on YouTube

(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) My "Things to Blog" folder is stacked with tons of great material (lead in multi-vitamins story, the autism being discussed on The View, etc.), I've just been too busy to get to any of that this week.  But this is a must see... Smoking Tooth = Poison Gas. The producer and narrator of this video is Dr. David Kennedy, DDS retired.  I serve with him on the boards of Consumers for Dental Choice and Jigsaw Health Foundation.  He's been fighting the mercury amalgam (and fluoride) battle for nearly 30 years.  He is a walking encyclopedia of the hundreds (thousands?) of peer-reviewed published studies.  Whenever I ask him a question, his reply to me is usually several pages full of quotations from studies.  Dr. Kennedy is a great man. Mercury and Vaccines
2008-03-09 12:37:09
Here is a good and balanced view of the controversy over mercury, vaccines and autism. Personally, I agree with his view in general. Also, his view as a research neuroscientist that even small amounts of toxins can cause the brain to not function well is right on. Another thing I think important is to spread out the vaccination schedule for the child. We used to vaccinate on a much slower schedule. The rise in autism appears to coincide with an acceleration in that schedule beginning around 1991. Challenging a childs immune system with so many vaccinations when their immune system (and most other systems) are not yet fully developed does not seem wise. Here is a more user friendly recommended schedule from a doctor Miller.

Pat Has a New Job
2008-02-01 15:35:00
I have been busy and not blogging at all. I have a new gig. I became the CEO of Flypaper.net about 3 months ago. We launched the public beta this past Monday. We showed the product at Demo 08. We won one of the coveted 10 Demogod awards for best of show out of 77 new cool companies. Flypaper is likely going to be the biggest thing I have ever done. Considering that ACT! has sold over 4MM copies and is still going strong after 20 years now, that is quite a statement. But I believe it is true. Flypaper bridges the huge gap between Microsoft's Powerpoint and custom Flash programming. To do anything really cool on the web you have to hire an expensive Flash programmer to do it for you. What gets delivered to you cannot be edited or changed except by that programmer. That all changes with Flypa

Pumpkin Seeds and Magnesium
2007-12-19 18:23:37
(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) WebMD published an article for Men's Health called, "The 10 Best Foods You Aren't Eating". Pretty cool list of exotic foods I'm going to try and add to my diet. And of course, since I'm such a magnesium zealot, this note about pumpkin seeds really jumped out at me: 10. Pumpkin seeds These jack-o'-lantern waste products are the most nutritious part of the pumpkin. Why they're healthy: Downing pumpkin seeds is the easiest way to consume more magnesium. That's important because French researchers recently determined that men with the highest levels of magnesium in their blood have a 40 percent lower risk of early death than those with the lowest levels. And on average, men consume 353 mg of the mineral daily, well under the 420 mg minimum recommended

(Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.) In my inbox from Charlie Brown of Consumers for Dental Choice: Dramatic hearing on Capitol Hill: Members of Congress demand to know why FDA refuses to do Environmental Impact Statement FDA was called to the carpet at a dramatic hearing on Capitol Hill on Nov. 14. Chairman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), Congressman Dan Burton (R-Ind.), and Congresswoman Diane Watson (D-Calif.) took turns insisting that FDA comply with the law by doing an Environmental Impact Statement on mercury amalgam. How to Raise Venture Capital

I was invited to speak at the Second Annual Entrepreneurship Conference last week. I chose to speak about the process of raising Venture or Angel Capital. It is entitled, "Pat's Top 10 Tips on Raising Money, Really." I try to give information that you won't typically find in a book. You can watch my speech here.

Do as I do, not as I say.
2007-11-17 20:37:54
In my experience doctors or nurses rarely talk to their patients about the importance of taking nutritional supplements. But the majority of them take supplements themselves. Here is a study that reports as many as 79% of doctors and 82% of nurses take supplements. Why do I take them? I believe that our fruits and vege's simply don't have in them what they used to have in terms of minerals and vitamins. I also admit I don't eat as many fruits and vege's as I should. Most people don't. So I think it is good insurance to add supplements when I eat.
