The End of Mercury Fillings? 2006-10-25 19:00:26 Here is a great post at the Huffington Post entitled "The Beginning of the End of Mercury
in Dentistry."
I applaud Rep. Diane Watson (D) for her courageous and longtime stance against the ADA and FDA and their insistence that this incredibly stupid and untested use of mercury in humans was safe. It is NOT safe. At least it has never been proven safe by either the ADA or the FDA.
Someday the use of mercury in dentistry will end just like the use of Asbestos ended. Imagine though if the same approach used for Asbestos was applied to Mercury Fillings. Laws were passed making it necessary to remove Asbestos from the buildings that contained it. Yikes!!
Removing amalgams from the mouths of over 70% of the entire population of America (200+ million people) would be quite a task. Especially if dentists have to do it right. (You can't just drill the damn stuff out!! You will make tens of millions even more poisoned and sick.) And WHO is going to pay for it?? The ADA? The US
Lack of Meaning and Darwin 2006-10-24 18:39:00 It seems apparent to me that philosophically and spiritually, many people today lack any sense of meaning or purpose. I was raised Catholic back in the 50's and 60's. My recollection is that meaning and purpose were pretty much just assumed. Not saying that being Catholic is the answer though.
I have argued here at times that Darwin
ism ushered in a sense of meaninglessness. If everything we see was not designed but simply happened by chance from totally random events, then meaning is... well, meaningless. Some have taken issue with me in past comments arguing that Darwin does not challenge religious belief. That seemed a ridiculous argument since logically, if Life is totally random then there can be no meaning.
Here is a what todays high school and college students are being taught in their biology classes. Very interesting. If Darwin is right, it means that there is no meaning. A lot more here. That is a bad outcome even if Darwin was right (which of course he wasn't). Read more:Meaning
Cancer: The Big C 2006-10-24 02:44:28 I was talking with a friend this weekend about a former classmate who was dying of cancer after many courses of chemo, radiation and surgery. She was asking me if I knew of anything that might help her friend. I have read quite a bit about cancer in the past and wrote about it a bit in my book, Wellness Piece by Piece.
Basically, I think the chemo and radiation approach is a dead end, literally. At best, the standard chemo treatment is one where the docs hope they kill the cancer before they kill you. If I got cancer I don't believe I would ever go the chemo route except in a few exceptions. I might not beat the cancer but when you look at the stats for chemo therapy, chances are I would be dead anyway. The difference is that my quality of life going the chemo route would be much worse. I don't want to be fighting both the cancer AND the negative effects of the chemo.
So with this in mind, I happened across this interesting article on Dr. Mercola's website regarding can Read more:Cancer
Thoughts on Iraq 2006-10-20 20:32:17 Iraq is now like Vietnam or the Tet offensive according the press and it seems even the Bush admin is buying into that thinking. Interesting.
Quickly, for what it is worth (probably not much), here is what I think.
1.) Regardless of the messiness of the Iraq situation it is a VERY good thing that we have managed to attract most of the crazy Islamists to Iraq to fight us there instead of allowing them to spread out and fight us everywhere else, especially here on our soil. There is no question in my mind that one of the reasons we have not been attacked again here, is that we are there. They have come to fight us there. That is a very positive thing. They are going to fight us somewhere and it is far better for us that it is there, not NY or LA or wherever in the US.
2.) Over the years I have talked to many soldiers who were on the ground in Vietnam and all were sooo frustrated that they were never allowed to really fight to win! Political issues prevented them from kicking N Read more:Iraq
Don't tell your doctor!! 2006-10-19 17:14:00 Actually I don't need to tell you because you are already NOT telling your doctor that you are taking vitamins and other supplements. 69% of people taking both supplements and prescription meds did NOT tell their docs that they were doing that.
Is that a good idea? Well, probably not but the problem is that docs generally have no clue about supplements so they will generally simply tell you to stop out of ignorance. People pretty much know this so they just don't bother to tell their doctors everything that they are taking.
In a way, I like this a lot because it means that more and more people are taking responsibility for their own health. They often are NOT getting the help they want or need from their doc so they do the research themselves and try alternatives. I think this a good thing. Could it be dangerous? Yes, it could and it is why you should do a little more research and learn if there any known interactions between your supplements and your Rx meds.

Fish Oil and Alzheimer's 2006-10-18 19:26:00 This study found that patients diagnosed with mild Alzheimer
's had no further progression of the disease when they took therapeutic levels of fish oil (1.7 grams of DHA and .6 grams of EFA). People with more advanced Alzheimer's received no benefit however.
While the study does not say it, one might surmise from this that using Fish Oil
could be a great preventative measure. American's are sorely deficient in Omega 3 oils due to our overuse of vegetable oils and we simply don't eat enough Omega 3's. There are many great fish oils out there to take and Jigsaw Health has a good one here.
Celiac and the Brain 2006-10-18 02:14:53 Here is an interesting finding by the Mayo Clinic where they found that patients with Celiac
Disease often also had cognitive issues develop.
I find it interesting because it is an observation that I (a non-doctor) have made and have written about in Wellness Piece by Piece. The difficulty for many people with chronic conditions is that their symptoms are often so varied. Many systems of the body are affected. That often makes it very difficult to diagnose. It makes it very difficult to uncover the underlying cause of the condition. My stomach hurts, I have bowel problems, rashes, anxiety, headaches and I can't remember my PIN number when I need money. Do I go see a GI doc? A Dermatologist? A Neurologist? A Psychiatrist?
All of these docs mean well, but they are not trained to treat the WHOLE body. It is why I always say that the major symptom of someone with a chronic condition is that they have seen a LOT of doctors. Read more:Brain
Eat your Walnuts!! 2006-10-11 22:03:01 Great article on how something as simple as Walnuts can have a big impact on our health. In this case, the cardiovascular system. Sometimes we need Rx meds but often our diets and lifestyle choices are what hurt us the most. Often very simple changes such as eating a handful of walnuts or pecans can make a big difference. Hopefully, the FDA won't now send letters to all the Walnut growers and tell them they have to stop selling their walnuts until they run $300 million worth of studies to test the safety and effectiveness of walnuts as a drug.
Jigsaw Health has the best nuts you can buy. They are expensive but they are expensive for a very good reason. Nuts are seeds. Seeds protect themselves from releasing all the nutrient dense power that they posess until they think they have been planted in the ground. What Jigsaw does is take raw. organic nuts and soak them for over 18 hours and then slowly dry them. This fools the nuts (they are so NUTS aren't they?) into thinking th
Intelligent Design Blogs 2006-10-11 01:54:44 I came across this blog that you may be interested in if you are interested in the continuing controversy regarding Intelligent
Design. Here is a list of other blogs that cover the same subject.
I really like this topic though rarely have the time to write much about it. Regardless of those who think it really should be "Un-Intelligent Design
" or "No-Design, just sort of happened", this is an area that will continue to receive attention.
My opinion is that to any thinking person, they have to look at the incredible design of the human body, the earth, the universe we find ourselves in and conclude that there sure seems to be a lot of evidence that a really incredible designer was/is at work. Makes sense to me. The issue is, if you believe that what do you do about it? Read more:Blogs
Raw Milk 2006-10-06 01:02:49 For many years I have been a big fan of using Raw Milk. I regularly have used both cow and goat milk raw. Learn more about Real Milk here. I find it is far more easy to digest than pasteurized milk. Plus, pasteurized milk goes bad. Real Milk just turns to Yogurt, cottage cheese or Kefir. The bugs left in Pasteurized milk are far more dangerous than good, clean raw milk. Real Milk is great stuff!!
David Gumpert writes about how the State of California has temporarily shut down the largest Raw Milk dairy in California with no evidence of contamination. They thought maybe there was E. Coli in the milk and shut it down, and then went looking for proof. They found none but kept the dairy closed. Big lawsuits are threatened. Interesting read. Check out Davids blog as well for updates on the issue .

Purple Cows and Politics 2006-11-08 08:17:34 (Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
Purple
cows stand out from the pack. Seth Godin wrote an excellent book about it and how it applies to marketing principles. Extremes to one end or the other are what make products worth telling your friends about. "I just saw a purple cow!" The products in the middle of the pack are either dead or dying.
So why did so many centerist-moderates win this election?
In my state of Arizona, I can't figure out the incongruence in the electorate when it comes to illegal immigration.
Prop 102 prohibits illegal aliens from receiving punitive damages in AZ courts. More than 70% agreed.
Prop 103 makes English as the official language. More than 70% agreed.
Prop 300 stops illegal immigrants from receiving government funded services. More than 70% agreed. (Prop 102, 103, 300 results.)

We envision a day when every medical student and physician is aware of the professional, ethical and practical complications of the current relationship with pharmaceutical company representatives. 77% of food is NON-food 2006-11-14 05:09:13 (Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
David Gumpert comments on a very interesting story about grocery chain in the northeast, Hannaford Brothers, who hired a panel of nutritionists to rate their foods for nutritional value. 77% of food in the grocery store received ZERO stars.
I like the concept that Hannaford is taking. People want to eat healthy. But they don't have time to do their own analysis. So if Hannaford is going to put together the "Guiding Stars" system to help me easily select the best foods, I'm in!
Unfortunately, soy makes it into their list of healthy foods. Sad. Some marketing works. Other marketing doesn't. Read the Soy Alert from Weston A. Price.
In a related note, I podcasted a show about nutrient density a few weeks ago. Go listen.

Islamists 2006-11-14 23:38:42 This interesting piece was sent to me by a friend. It is an interview of Dr. Tawfik Hamid, a former Islamic terrorist.
Here is a quote that speaks volumes."Stop asking what you have done wrong. Stop it! They're slaughtering you like sheep and you still look within. You criticize your history, your institutions, your churches. Why can't you realize that it has nothing to do with what you have done but with what they want."I find it maddening they many Americans, blame America for being hated and attacked by the Islamists

Fluoride Dangerous to Infants 2006-11-16 01:25:14 (Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
File under "Duh." Newstarget reports: ADA reverses position, warns its members that fluoride is too dangerous to be consumed by infants. On Nov. 9, the American Dental Association released an email alert to its members warning that, in order to prevent tooth damage, fluoridated water should not be mixed into formula or foods intended for babies aged 1 and younger.
Currently, two-thirds of the U.S. public water supply has fluoride chemicals added, a move centered on a now-disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents cavities.
...
The Environmental Protection Agency, which sets allowable water fluoride levels, is required to consider the most vulnerable members of a population, so allowable fluoride levels should be near zero to protect infants.
"This should end water fluoridation," Beeber said. "Fluoridation is a failed concept that must be abandoned before more Americans are harmed." This news will make lots of people I know happy. People lik Read more:Fluoride

For a dime a day, a brand new company called GreenDimes gets your off direct mailing lists AND plants a tree on you behalf each month.
I read about them in my daily tip from Ideal Bite. I went to their website, re-read their simple picth, and GAVE THEM $36 IN UNDER 2 MINUTES of first hearing about them.
Why?
I have a massive junk mail problem. Me or my wife gets a pink slip just about every other day because all our (junk) mail won't fit in our mailbox and they put a stop on delivering mail. So one of the other have to trudge to the post office, stand in line, and get a bucket of crap so I can weed through junk mail to find my Netflix movies!

Article about the Shoemakers 2006-11-20 02:47:49 (Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
Good story about Scott and Angie Shoemaker and their son in The Cleveland Scene.
I thought it was pretty fair and balanced. All except for the "shock" expressed at the thousand a month for chelation and vitamins that the Shoemakers spend which has produced dramatic results for their son, and the lack of shock for the $62,000 a year treatment options where "therapists crouch beside their pint-sized charges, playing with plastic horses, sifting through flash cards and picture books." Wow, all that for just $5,000 a month?

Charlie Brown from Consumers for Dental Choice sent the following email. As I read through it, I was reminded again of just how long this fight to abolish mercury from dentistry has been going on. Each recipient is highly deserving of our appreciation. The "crack in the damn" earlier this summer is due to each of these individuals hard work, as well as the efforts of many, MANY others. Consumers for Dental Choice proudly honors six individuals for their outstanding service to the cause of abolishing mercury fillings. Each has been sent a plaque in recognition of her/his achievements.

Freedom of Speech - Not always 2006-11-21 23:08:30 Chase Harper. a high school student is going to the Supreme Court. Good for Chase!
Chase Harper - who wore a T-shirt to school expressing his religious viewpoint on homosexual behavior. Chase was closely questioned by an armed deputy and prohibited by school officials from wearing his shirt, telling him to "keep his faith in the car" - all the while the school welcomed messages advocating homosexual behavior.
Chase and his parents took the school to court defending his First Amendment rights, first in federal district court, and then before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. In one of its most "creative" opinions ever - citing the movie Brokeback Mountain - Judge Stephen Reinhardt (the most overturned judge in the country), and another 9th Circuit judge ruled that Chase's biblical speech was not protected.Despite the uproar the opinion created on the left and the right with regard to free speech rights, the 9th Circuit would not re-hear the case. So, Chase's case Read more:Freedom

. He had become a legend in the bomb disposal world after winning the Bronze S tar for disabling 64 IEDs and destroying 1,548 pieces of ordnance during his second tour. Then, on September 19, he got blown up. He had arrived at a chaotic scene after a bomb had killed four US soldiers. He chose not to wear the bulky bomb protection suit. "You can't react to any sniper fire and you get tunnel-vision," he explains. So, protected by just a helmet and = standard-issue flak jacket, he began what bomb disposal officers term "the longest walk", stepping gingerly into a 5ft deep and 8ft wide crater. The earth shifted slightly and he saw a Senao base station with a wire leading from it. He cut the wire and used his 7in knife t o p Read more:Iraq War
Collodial silver will kill you...bacteria! 2006-12-05 09:25:23 (Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
NewsTarget warns that the EPA is going to use a nanotech regulation ploy to target colloidal silver while ignoring all other nanotech particles.
"This is not a regulation designed to protect the environment from nanotechnology, it's a stealth ploy that selectively attempts to remove colloidal silver from the marketplace," [Mike] Adams said. "Silver was gaining momentum in the marketplace as a safe, effective and natural antibacterial element. It cannot be patented and directly competes with antibiotics, antibacterial cleaners and other products from powerful corporations. That's why Big Business had to knock colloidal silver off track and regulate it out of the marketplace."
Yeah, I think Mike is right.
I sent an email to my contact at Natural-Immuongenics, the makers of Sovereign Silver, to get their take on what's going on here. I'll ask him to post a comment reply.

Brain Health from Dr. Amen 2006-12-05 22:02:33 I am a big fan of Dr. Daniel Amen MD. He has pioneered the use of technology that scans and takes pictures of the brain. He has been able to pinpoint many useful things in conditions like depression, ADD, bipolar and other brain disorders. While he uses Rx meds in his practice, he also regularly recommends natural supplements like 5-HTP, L-Theanine, Tyrosine and fish oil. His technology can "see" the difference these make. Sometimes they are all someone really needs, avoiding the use of sometimes dangerous medications that have a lot of side effects. Notice I said "sometimes". There is nothing wrong with using Rx meds when you really need them.
The following is a newsletter sent where he talks about these supplements a bit. I thought you might find it useful.CBS-TV LOOKS AT NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS

Mercury from thermometers poison day care kids 2006-12-12 08:31:29 (Posted by Patrick Sullivan Jr.)
Marie Flowers of Mercury
Poisoned.com points me to a story going on in New Jersey. Apparently, the Kiddie Kollege day care building used to be a mercury thermometer factory that was never fully cleaned up. And now, kids like Alexis Davis are showing signs of mercury toxicity:"Alexis went to Kiddie Kollege for two years. Over those two years her
health really deteriorated," she said. "They didn't know what was wrong
with her." As she spoke, Davis presented class pictures of her
daughter, taken while she was enrolled at Kiddie Kollege. The three
pictures taken over the course of two years show the slow paralysis of
Alexis' face, with the right side of her face no longer able to smile,
Davis suggested.
"You can see her face has no strength; her teeth are rotting; these kids need help," Davis said.
