A child of the 21st Century 2008-09-15 23:00:00 Yesterday morning, I met a friend for breakfast at my favorite breakfast place: Panera. This friend and I have been trying to get together for weeks, but sick child
ren and crazy schedules kept getting in the way and forcing us to cancel plans at the last minute.
Today, we were determined to enjoy some good conversation over yummy bagels.
Naturally, Logan (2) came along as my sidekick, and

Elusive Slumber 2008-10-17 05:00:00 It's a typical Wednesday night at the Callapidder House. The kids are asleep, and Chad and I are reading our respective books in bed, our bedside lamps softly illuminating the room. The cat is sleeping on top of me. (At least, until I squirm into a new position and she leaps from the bed with a disgruntled mew.) It's probably between 9:30 and 10:00, but we're both engrossed in our books and no

Book Review: The Rook 2008-10-15 10:08:00 A few weeks ago, I was sent a copy of The Rook, a suspense novel by Steven James, to read and review here on Callapidder Days. I was glad to receive this invitation, since I'd actually seen The Rook at Borders and had considered buying it. After all, suspense? Thrills? Mystery? I'm there.
Here's what the back cover has to say:

The Roller Coaster Ride, or Being the Mom of a 2-year-old 2008-10-13 13:35:00 We celebrated Camden's 10th birthday with a big party at our house over the weekend. Lots of fun (along with lots of pizza, lots of cake, and lots of ice cream) was had by all. Even 2-year-old Logan was at his best -- greeting our guests, running around the yard with cousins, stealing sharing ice cream with his grandmother. He was endearing.
That is, until another 2-year-old -- Quin, the son of

Current Events 2008-10-07 23:00:00 Lessons I hope we teach our kids, in light of the current economic situation:
1. Money is not security. When all your hopes, all your dreams, all your feelings of safety and security are tied up in the size of your bank account or your 401(k) or your mutual fund holdings...you're on very shaky ground.
2. Good stewardship of whatever you have -- whether it's a lot or a little -- is crucial.

Vacuuming Help 2008-10-06 23:00:00 Every time the vacuum comes out, Logan (2) rushes over to help me. He'll drop his Legos, Trains, or Little People Noah's Ark and instantly be at my side to participate in this very exciting venture of sucking up cat hair, paper scraps and crumbs. One little hand reaches up to grasp the vacuum handle, just under my hand.
Do I let him help? Of course I do.
Even though I know it's going to turn a

Me, me, me 2008-10-05 23:00:00 In the last week or so, I've been tagged by four people: Cindy, Alyce, Amanda, and The Dynamic Uno. Since all of the tags require me to list six things about myself (well, technically one tag asked for seven), I decided to do one post in response to all four tags, since I'm sure that posting 24 (25) things about myself would be a bit much. Really, I know there's only so much my dear readers can
CD Giveaway: Hello Love 2008-10-05 16:45:00 When the folks from EMI Christian Music Group asked me if I would like to check out Chris Tomlin's new CD, Hello
Love, I didn't have to think twice before answering, "Yes!" I discovered Chris Tomlin a few years ago and his albums quickly became part of my iPod's "Favorites" playlist. He offers contemporary-style worship songs that work for me as both attitude-adjusters and day-brighteners.

A change of plans and a good decision 2008-11-11 23:00:00 This week has not gone as planned.
In case you were wondering, here was the plan:
1) Relax all of Sunday afternoon and evening. Stay up as late as I wanted.
2) Get Camden off to school Monday, and then have a leisurely morning. Clean bathrooms at some point if inspired to do so.
3) Attend the Veteran's Day Program put on by Camden's school on Tuesday.
4) That's as far as I had gotten.
And

Book Winner: Me, Myself, & I AM 2008-11-11 07:01:00 Just a quick post to announce that the winner of Me, Myself, & I AM is....
Congrats!
The Magic Touch 2008-11-09 23:00:00 It all started at a traffic light.
Logan (2) is not the most patient person in the world, and when we're in the car, he expects it to keep moving. Brief delays at stop signs are tolerated, but longer periods of motionlessness are not. If we're stopped at a traffic light, Logan is most likely saying, "Go. Go. Mama? GO!"
Being the lecturer rational explainer that I am, I attempted early on to

A Farewell 2008-11-08 13:01:00 We carefully gutted them....
We lovingly carved them...
We joyfully displayed them for all the world neighborhood to see...
And now?
And now?
And now, alas, we are left with carnage.
Pumpkin carnage.
Apparently, the local wildlife was only willing to admire our designs for so long before being overwhelmed with an intense desire to dismember and mutilate our pumpkins.

How to Vote with a "Spirited" 2-year-old 2008-11-04 09:18:00 1. Remember the last time you went to vote. Recall the screaming, the meltdown, the stares from other voters. Cringe.
2. Spend too much time trying to determine the ideal time to vote -- you know, that perfect moment when no one else will be there. After the before-work crowd but before the kids-are-finally-off-to-school crowd.
3. Remember that you live in a very rural area and even a "long
Oops: MMM Update 2008-11-02 15:45:00 I am officially two days behind in posting the results of my Mega Memory Month memorization attempt. I knew the end of the month was coming. I even knew that it came and went. But I completely forgot about writing a post to reveal how I did (well, technically, how "we" did, since my son, Camden, joined in the memorizing fun as well).
First, the official results

Barefoot Books Winner 2008-11-01 06:42:00 I'd like to thank everyone who stopped by to sign up for the BarefootBooks

The winner is Elizabeth F., who had comment #601. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
What we're up to today 2008-10-31 14:05:00 Camden did not have school today (and, much to his delight, is also off on Monday), so here's what we've been up to:
1. A trip to Starbucks. Okay, actually, it was a trip to the gas station and the church, but Starbucks is conveniently located along the way somewhere around there, so we zipped through their oh-so-handy drive-through. I enjoyed a Pumpkin Spice Latte, while Camden tried (and

There! Perfect! 2008-10-27 23:00:00 A week or two ago, Logan (2) started saying a new phrase:
"Air! Keffet!"
I had no clue what he was talking about.
Usually, he said it after arranging his magnets on our (conveniently) metal front door. He'd place a circle on the door, then carefully position a triangle magnet above it, finish off the look with a rectangular magnet base, stand back and declare: "Air! Keffet!"
After exerting

Logan shares about his favorite books 2008-10-21 07:49:00 The gang over at 5 Minutes for Books hosts a monthly carnival called Kids' Picks, in which bloggers are invited to share which books their kids are reading or have recently enjoyed. This month, I thought I'd let Logan
tell you about some of his favorite books. So I'll just get out of the way and let him answer some questions on his current literary preferences.
[Editorial note: Logan is only two
