WFMW: 3 Recipes with 5 Ingredients or Less 2008-07-01 23:01:00 This week over at Rocks in My Dryer, Shannon is hosting a special Works-for-Me Wednesday: Five Ingredients
or Less. Since I'm all about simple meal preparation, I decided to jump in with three recipes that go over well at our house. But be sure to click the graphic at the bottom of this post to visit Shannon's blog and check out even more recipes.

Requirements for a Wife 2008-06-30 23:00:00 Lately, Camden (9) has been intrigued by the fact that people put a variety of opinion-expressing signs in their yards. Whether it's support for a presidential candidate or a sign protesting the building of a highway, he finds it interesting that they take their strong feelings and put them up in the yard for the whole world to see.
I mentioned on my blog last week that he's into maps, and

A brand new book meme 2008-06-29 23:00:00 Barbara H. over at Stray Thoughts has created a book meme, and was kind enough to tag me for it. So here goes...
1. Do you remember how you developed a love for reading? Nope. I'm not sure how old I was when I learned to read, but I've been reading for as long as I can remember. And loving it.
2. What are some books you read as a child? I loved Dr. Seuss books and Little Golden Books. As I got
Game Reviews: Pounce! and Go Nuts! 2008-06-27 23:00:00 If you're looking for a quick, easy game to play with the kids, you might be interested in one of the two games I'm reviewing today. Below you'll find two mini-reviews of new games from Gamewright. Both are easy to learn, quick to play, and take up very little room, so they're perfect for packing along on a trip or setting up on the table when you're faced with a rainy day.
Pounce!

Hmm... 2008-06-26 23:00:00 I picked up a kiddie pool for Logan this summer, the kind that theoretically folds into a 20"-diameter circle. Similar to this one. It popped open very easily: I removed it from its carrier and -- Pop! -- it instantly expanded into a nice-sized pool for a 2-year-old. Unfortunately, I cannot, for the life of me, get it to magically fold back into its original form. So if any of you are skilled
Book Giveaway: The Forbidden 2008-06-25 23:00:00 It's Thursday, again. And today I have one final novel from Bethany House to give away. (Next week, I'll have one last non-fiction book, so be sure to check in then, too.) But before I tell you about the current giveaway book, here's the winner for last week's book, From a Distance. The winner is:

Congrats!
Now for this week's book. If it sounds like a book you'd like and you want to be

I like chocolate. And I like bacon. 2008-06-25 13:19:00 I find chocolate to be a delightful addition to every any day. And bacon has its place on my plate any time I'm out for breakfast. They are both enjoyable foods.
But I think they should be kept separate.
I just found out that some state fairs are serving chocolate-covered bacon this summer. And at least one gourmet candy retailer is selling:
The Bacon Bar

Who's teaching him these things? 2008-06-23 23:00:00 Camden (9) recently placed an order at an online store (with the help and credit card of yours truly -- to be reimbursed from the allowance stash) and eagerly awaited the arrival of his items. Sadly, one item arrived cracked in half. Camden sighed, but prepared to live with the damaged object.
I, however, being the experienced online shopper that I am, was at the store's website in mere

Wholehearted 2008-06-23 05:00:00 Over the weekend, Camden explained to me that a number of countries are considered to be part of both Europe and Asia (and he listed those countries, of course); he named all the countries that were once part of Yugoslavia; he informed me that Zaire no longer exists (something I didn't know -- I'm not exactly an expert at current political events); and he quizzed me about which Scandinavian
Agreeable 2008-06-22 15:24:00 Logan rarely says "No."
I am almost always guaranteed to get a very loud and emphatic "NO" whenever I suggest that it might be time for bed or a nap. That "No" is often accompanied by tears and a toddler running in the opposite direction. Suggesting that it's time to come in from the great outdoors also results in a "no."
But other than that, he's usually very agreeable. I suppose I should
Spring Reading Thing 2008: How Did It Go? 2008-06-19 05:09:00 Summer heat has been slipping into our days for a while now, and Summer officially makes its entrance tomorrow. Which means, of course, that SpringReadingThing
2008 has come to an end. I want to thank all of those who participated. We ended up with 226 participants -- a great turn-out! Thanks for your enthusiasm about books, for spreading the word, and for reading along with me this spring.
Spring Reading Thing 2008: My Results 2008-06-19 05:08:00 This spring, I decided to read six nonfiction books and five fiction books. How'd I do? Well...
I finished all the fiction, plus read another book or two. Not surprising. And I finished all but one of the nonfiction, while also fitting in a few nonfiction books for blog tours. I was pretty happy with that result, since nonfiction is always more of a struggle for me.
Once again, I did not

Wordless Wednesday 2008-07-22 23:01:00 Aha! I finally found Mommy's "chocolate stash."
[Have you noticed that my "Wordless Wednesday
" posts are not entirely wordless? I can't resist a caption or title. Compared to my usual rambling posts about things like pizza and books, however, they are "mostly" wordless. We'll just consider them to be "Relatively Wordless Wednesday" posts and leave it at that.]

WFMW: "Three Things" Cleaning 2008-07-22 23:00:00 I am not a great housekeeper. My husband always assures me that our house is comfortable and decent and a good place to come home to, but no one has ever accused my house of being spotless. I've failed at FlyLady more than once, I don't have a regular weekly cleaning plan, and dust is pretty much a permanent resident here.
Oh don't worry, I do clean, but it's more like, "Gee, when was the last

Then and Now 2008-07-21 23:00:00 When I can't seem to get a blog post together in my brain, I've been known to browse the many pictures stored on my computer. It's a lot easier to browse them there than in a scrapbook or photo album, mostly because while I am really good at taking lots of pictures, I am horrible about ordering prints and organizing them in albums. (And scrapbooking? Forget it. Not gonna happen.)
So last night
Pizza Angel 2008-07-20 23:01:00 In the Veggie Tales video, Minnesota Cuke, there's a "Silly Song with Larry" entitled Pizza
Angel. In Pizza Angel, Larry laments the fact that he ordered a pizza and sadly, it never arrived. (In case you're curious, we learn as the song progresses that the delivery-gourd ate the pizza.)
French Pea angels accompany Larry as he belts out the refrain,
Pizza Angel, please come to me,

Giveaway winners 2008-07-20 23:00:00 The two winners of Love as a Way of Life by Gary Chapman are:
Dianne
and

Congratulations to you both!
Book Giveaway: Love as a Way of Life 2008-07-16 23:00:00 I've mentioned Gary Chapman's books on love languages a few times on this blog, and I've mentioned them even more often to friends and family members. The Five Love Languages was very helpful for us in the early years of our marriage and The Five Love Languages of Children has been a welcome resource on this parenting adventure.
So when Waterbrook Press asked me to participate in a blog tour

WFMW: Really Listening to Your Kids 2008-07-15 23:00:00 We're just about half-way through summer break, which means that my 9-year-old has been talking for six weeks straight.
Okay, not really, but he is a chatterbox.
And though I try to be a good, engaged, listening mom, there are times when my eyes glaze over or when I don't even look up from the computer when he's talking or when I answer "uh-huh" in such a way that he knows I'm not really paying

Books & Tears 2008-07-14 23:00:00 When I tucked Camden (9) in the other night, I could tell something was wrong. His eyes looked everywhere but at mine, he wasn't his usual chatty self, and his book was propped open to a page, though it was clear he was no longer reading it.
With a little motherly prodding, I soon discovered that the book he'd been reading had left him sad and a bit more emotional than he likes to be. This is

A Photographical Tour of Our Trip 2008-07-13 23:00:00 Last week, we spent a few sight-seeing days in the south-central part of Pennsylvania. Although Chad and I didn't think the ride would be too long, Logan clearly felt that it was horrendously long and tortuous, and cried or whined through the final 2/3rds of it. Both ways.
But before he was miserable, here's how he looked in the car:
Let's compare him to Camden, the tween. Note the ipod wires
Home Again 2008-07-12 13:33:00 We're here. Home. Intact.
I'll post pictures next week which will prove that, despite the screaming, and despite the flesh-wound, we had a nice time on our little trip.
For now, I'm looking at piles of bags. A suitcase, a super-sized diaper bag, a bag of books, a bag of dirty laundry. I don't particularly feel like dealing with them, but I know I will, for the most part, before I go to bed

Not as clever as I think 2008-07-11 13:02:00 I have been known to have clever ideas that turn out to be...um...not so clever.
Take my butter-softening method, for example. I like to bake a lot, but it's often spontaneous, meaning that I don't have time to let my butter or margarine soften at room temperature for 30 minutes. No problem! There's always the microwave. And if the microwave is occupied, well, I have another trick up my

That Family 2008-07-10 13:30:00 Have you ever been on an airplane, and found that right behind you was a family with a screaming baby? Or worse, a tantrum-prone toddler? While you feel compassion for the parents -- we've probably all been there, to some extent or other -- you also dread the upcoming hour...or two...or three, knowing that there will be no relaxing for you.
Today, we were that family.
No, not that family...that
