Teaching our children to be unhappy
2007-03-14 16:32:00
A chapter in the book “Be your own therapist” explores this idea of why parents are immediately labelled bad parents if their children do not get what they want. The author’s idea is that children use manipulative behaviour to get their own way and parents shouldn’t fall for it. The author believes that life is full of people not getting what they want and that children need to learn this even if that means they will be unhappy .“Giving in to the manipulative tantrum, on the other hand, sets them up for future unhappiness and tendencies toward violence.”To some extent I would say this is true. However, many would argue that this sets them up to not having the right attitude to succeed in life. If a child fails to achieve something first time around they shouldn’t feel sad or forced to feel unhappy but should try again with a new frame of mind.
