Logo Competition Announcement
2007-03-12 07:07:30
Ok, the voting on the muti poll is over! Although nothing can be proven, the voting did look a little dodgy so due to the concerns that there was some cheating going down we have selected the five designs that received the most votes and will be letting the judges decide on the winner (in the spirit of fairness). The winner will be announced by the end of the day so hold thumbs! Comment on "Logo Competition Announcement "

You cold, or is it me?
2007-03-11 14:50:17
Rob sent me this bizarre little Frisk commercial last weekend and although a part of me is kinda repulsed by it, the other part thinks it’s really funny. The parts combined know it was definitely targeted at a male audience … but I’ve decided I like it anyway (the feminist fury seems to be waning). I particularly enjoyed his moment on the turn tables :-) Comment on "You cold, or is it me?"

One before I hit the road
2007-03-10 15:19:26
Congrats to Audi for this one. Pretty awesome that they can take a swipe at so many competitors in one short clip. It's the weekend, it's hot in Cape Town and I'm ready to hit the beach, so without any further ado: Comment on "One before I hit the road"

Canine Suicide
2007-03-10 14:20:38
Now this clip has it all – love, romance, betrayal, and a manically depressed dog. Strange how easy it is to sympathise with the plight of this poor pooch. Not that I've been in his position before but the mutt has such an expressionful face. He really tugs at the heart strings. Kind of like a canine Tom Hanks. Ok that sucks – I just tried to think of a single actor who successfully tugs at the heart strings and I thought of Tom Hanks. What's wrong with me? I only thought of him because there was nobody else and I chose somebody at random. Guess I must be emotionally bankrupt then. Although I did get teary eyed watching Pulp Fiction the other day, but that was more from laughing than anything else. Comment on "Canine Suicide "

2007-03-09 17:08:26
Quirk has launched a second blog, dedicated to the world of finance and business - including its interaction with Web 2.0. At www.quirk.biz/financeforum, we will be sharing our thoughts on this as well as highlighting some of the juicer reputational slips and successes for Financial Institutions. There will also be some stimulating reflection and debate on South Africa and the World more generally. We look forward to your visits, agreements and disagreements! Good service is hard to find
2007-03-09 12:20:06
I've been brooding on this Thank You post for a while now as I wanted it to really express just how grateful we are to the people who helped us make the WebPR+ conference such a success. We’ve already said thanks to the delegates, speakers and QuirkStars who made it happen, but I wanted to say a special thank you to all those involved behind the scenes. Organising a conference or event whether big or small is no joke and finding companies to provide quality services are not always as easy as it may sound. We ran into a few problems with one or two companies but the positive experience we had with others more than made up for them. That is why I would like to single out the businesses that went over and above just providing a good service. I would personally recommend that you use these companies if you ever need their kind of services! So, without further ado, a huge round of applause goes to: Azure-Blu Print Les Hall, from Azure-Blu Print specialises in printing on corporat

Who ya gonna trust?
2007-03-09 09:46:34
There has always a lot of debate around trust as far as the Internet is concerned. With so much info out there published by corporations, governments, individuals, interest groups, and with so much of that information in conflict figuring out who to trust is important. It is well known that people trust individuals more than corporations, so if I tell a friend that this product is really good, they are more likely to believe me that the company that produces the product. Then there are friends of friends. You don't trust their opinions as much as your actual friends, but as they are endorsed by your friend you still apportion them a certain amount of trust. Then there are experts that you don't know personally but you are aware that they are generally recognised as very knowledgeable in a certain area, so you again apportion them with a certain amount of trust, at least in their area of expertise.   We weigh up all these factors a lot of the time without even rea

We Have a Winner
2007-03-13 14:55:44
Right, let me start off by saying while competitions, like the SA Blog awards unofficial logo design competition may improve traffic and interactivity on your blog they are hell to run. HELL! Right mini meltdown aside, it all started with some negative comments on the official logo which looks like so: So we decided to run an unofficial competition to see if the critics could do better and we asked coda, Rich…! and Jon Cherry to be judges. After an overwhelming response of 86 entries and reading Stii’s post, about having competitions on muti, Neville offered to help us out and get the  and open them up to voting. I thought this was an awesome idea and possibly the most fair way to decide (silly me)…. That was until the rather obvious vote spam started! One logo went from having a few votes to 77 over the space of a few hours – all hail the power of the group email. And the bitching resumed… Neville and I reevaluated the situation and decided to

Twitter, Twitter...
2007-03-13 08:24:36
Twit is one of my favourite words; I find it to be a nice apt and succinct way of describing certain individuals. The Twits is one of my favourite books – you’ve gotta love the “dreaded shrinks” but the word “twitter” makes me think of birds and while it may not be normal I have somewhat of an irrational fear of the little sky rats. I’m more of a dog, hamster, ferret type of gal. So perhaps I was inherently put off by this Twitter rage initially but as I read the volumes of posts that are being written around it my opinions are starting to change. Twitter is the social networking buzzword of the moment, and essentially allows you to share messages (of sms length) with your social network via a mobile device, IM or on the web. Your Twitter messages are sent to your own personalised Twitter page from where you can add friends and grow your network. You can check out what everyone is up to and subscribe to their Twitter feeds. While Twitter is p

Bowled Over as the World Cup Knocks Us for a Six
2007-03-15 15:25:30
Sorry about the title, I really couldn't help myself.  As many of you may know, at Quirk we take our cricket pretty seriously. The office is full of obsessives, regularly arguing the merits of the current South African squad, who should be dropped, who should be selected, and who should bat where. In short, we’re a real bunch of armchair coaches. So it should come as no surprise that the World Cup has caused more than it’s fair share of excitement. We have a private league on the Sky Sports Fantasy Cricket League, (which I’m fairly confident I'll win),  and we’re all busy running around, debating which team South Africa will face in the finals. So far the Windies are the only team that have beaten a test playing opponent. Sadly we missed the first innings of the game, as we were busy crushing incuBeta in an indoor cricket world cup of our own. Australia’s thrashing Scotland barely counts, and Kenya’s 7 wicket victory over Canada has har

Why SA’s broadband price plummet can shoot your business to an online summit
2007-03-14 16:48:39
With the latest broadband price cuts from pretty much every animal in the broadband zoo, Internet access in South Africa is set to soar to great heights – and the view will be good. First off the mark was MTN. Give them R399 each month and they’ll give you 2GB of data usage each month at very brisk HSDPA speeds. Vodacom promptly arrived at the now-in-full-swing party and offers the same package for R10 less, a drop of 61% from their previous rate. These rates are excellent in the international context – in fact, South Africa has one of the cheapest mobile broadband rate structures in the world. Sentech and iBurst are also in on the action, cutting prices and upping bandwidth, and although their wireless services are convenient, they lack the widespread coverage and portability of MTN and Vodacom’s mobile offerings. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that even Telkom have also now dropped their wholesale broadband prices, but alas not by much at all. The dr

Presidential Redesign
2007-03-16 14:13:55
Smallz mentioned Barak Obama in his post “President 2.0” a while back, but it would seem as if it isn’t just social media that he is embracing.  He started by hiring Chicago based Sender LLC, a brand consultancy and design studio to do his initial branding.  His campaign logo and general identity have elevated him far above the traditional blandness of his rivals. Now he’s upped the ante by posting these videos on YouTube.  More MTV than Capitol Hill, he seems to have faultlessly gauged the message, the medium and his audience. Let’s face it, the sentiments are clichéd, but it’s all about the delivery.  Lets be honest, most politicians speak the same hollow language, so it’s hardly likely that this will be noticed by the average voter. I’d vote for him just on his perceived “cool-factor” and one wonders how many others may do the same. Comment on "Presidential Redesign"

The Onion takes a bite out of The Apple
2007-03-16 13:58:18
The Onion is a hilarious and astute site dedicated to the fine art of satire. Someone recently sent me a link to one of their articles, entitled 'Apple Unveils New Product-Unveiling Product’. It definitely deserves a read, even if for nothing more than its entertainment value. This article is a great parody. What is a great parody? Those which present humour at surface value and critical social commentary at a deeper level. Sometimes the humour is lightly sprinkled over the serious underlying issue, and other times lavishly drenched. It is the serious component however, that is the reason for the parody’s existence. In the case of the Apple article, the apparent absurdity of the concept at first humours us, and then makes us think more deeply – of our sometimes extreme dependence on automated devices to survive in this day and age. This is complemented by another worrying aspect: what are the limits of automation? What is the saturation point of this technology-hun

Tidy Up
2007-03-17 09:44:16
Ikea, creators of fantastic and functional furniture are responsible for today's viral fun. Furniture is not a particularly interesting, sexy or funny topic but Ikea’s ad agency have managed to make it all three. Check out these three commercials for their “Tidy Up” campaign. I love the second commercial (now you know why I moan about you leaving your trainers lying all over the house Dave). Which is your favourite? Comment on "Tidy Up"

A Short Film Called Hands
2007-03-18 11:01:48
We featured two of the Guinness “Good things come to those who wait campaign” ads on GottaQuirk a while ago. “A short film called hands” is another of their great ads from the campaign. Once you’ve had a look at the viral check out the website created around it which allows you to “Express your own creativity by directing the hands in a clip inspired by the cinematic genius of the director.” Enjoy. Go forth and podcast
2007-03-20 09:30:26
5fm, Apple, Coca Cola and MINI have launched a podcasting competition with R250 000 of slick prizes like iPods and MacBooks. The grand-prize winner gets to zoot around in a MINI Cooper for two months, and category finalists get VIP tickets to one helluva gig to “soak in the fame and the adoration of your friends when we play the category finalists’ podcasts on the big-screen in front of thousands of thousands of screaming fans”, according to the getpodcasting competition site, which began accepting submissions yesterday. The competition urges one to “Enter now and be part of the next wave of technology sweeping the planet.” A tad gallant, perhaps, but nevertheless it is great to see that podcasting in South Africa is being given such a significant boost. Let the people speak. Too bad the fine print is pretty nasty. It’s probably safe to predict that most people who enter this competition will match the demographics of 5fm’s youth market. Thi

SA Drama (oops, Blog) Awards
2007-03-19 13:03:09
I thought the drama that resulted from several bloggers massacring Nicole’s design for the blog awards logo on GottaQuirk was bad… that was until I got in this morning and picked up on the drama around the actual awards themselves this weekend (I had an Internet free weekend… it was sublime). Sure there are some valid points “It strikes me as inappropriate that most panellists are also nominated for awards”. What would really strike me as odd was if they were judging the categories they were nominated in. I guess I’d rather have a host of people that really know something about blogging judging the competition than a group who didn’t. I must confess that I’ve also thought of it as a bit of an old boy’s club from time to time but they’re not the bloody Illuminati for god sakes. Controlling the blog awards today – taking over the world tomorrow – I doubt it. As the SA blogosphere is still relatively small the

Podcasting: video wins, audio loses
2007-03-20 13:30:14
This is a follow-up, or more accurately an add-on, to this morning’s Go forth and podcast post. First up, some simple technical clarification. Podcasting can take two forms: audio or video . The 5fm competition welcomes entries in either format. However, it seems the audio podcasting format is dying a slow death – at least in terms of its revenue potential. Conversionrater.com published an article today entitled Five Reasons Audio Podcasting Isn’t Going Anywhere. They reckon audio podcasts suck because: They’re hard to scan quickly; They’re hard to link to a specific point in a podcast; Downloading and managing the files sucks; Amateur podcasting is hard to take; Audio advertising isn’t moving quickly. In my previous post I put forward the opinion that “this competition can only do good things for the promotion of the Internet as a powerful platform on which the opinionated voices of Joe and Jill Soap can be widely heard

Ufuna ntoni? Amatomu!
2007-03-22 15:32:28
Just when we thought that there may be a chance that we’ve run out of amazing changes to witness and experience, someone always whips one out of the bag. We love it when that happens. Yes we do. In this case, the perpetrator of such a marvelous occurrence being Vincent Maher, online media strategist for the Mail & Guardian. This is the man who brings us Amatomu ! This highly beneficial blogosphere tool has been hailed by some as the South African Technorati, its function being to rank, organise and connect the SA blogosphere. The launch of such a product has and will undoubtedly become a super catalyst in the growth of the rate of the social and business media realms, not only within South Africa, but also between South Africa and countries abroad. Having been kept as top-secret information for some time, the news was finally broken yesterday by blogger Tyler Reed, who could no longer keep such a marvelous discovery a secret. On his site, he lists the basic features of Amat

eMarketing 101 Update
2007-03-22 10:57:57
So yesterday was Human Rights Day – I hope all the South African’s had a relaxing public holiday spent with family and friends. Unfortunately there is no rest for the wicked, and being a Wednesday it meant that it was time for Quirk’s fortnightly newsletter. After a few dramas (we love living on the edge - it adds some excitement) the newsletter went out, albeit a bit late. We released Chapter 9 of our eMarketing 101 series: Affiliate Marketing – because we all need friends. Go on – check it out. Those 101 collections should be growing quite nicely now. Make sure you’re signed up to the newsletter so that you receive the chapters as they’re released.   PS – yes I realise there is a small mistake in the newsletter – a little slip-up on my behalf… Comment on "eMarketing 101 Update "

You must be Cloaking
2007-03-23 16:18:04
Recently ‘Marketing Pilgrim’ writer Jeremy Luebke posted an article -“The art of Link Cloaking”. He made quite a few interesting comments about the benefits of link cloaking; where some are true, and others are not. (In my opinion, anyway) The origin of Link Cloaking Link Cloaking was originally used by Affiliate marketers to ensure that their affiliate ID is present when you click on a link. For instance – having a link: http:/www.domain.co.za/product.php?id=146233ZA, you might stand the risk of someone just copying the URL and going there directly, thus not giving you the credit for the sale. Enter Link Cloaking… Marketers will then rather use http://www.mywebaffiliatesite.co.za as the link, which will redirect (using a 301 redirect) to http:/www.domain.co.za/product.php?id=146233ZA So how can we use this information in our SEO campaign? These were some suggestions according to Jeremy: Take into account websites A, B, and C. • &nb

Xbox 360 Shoot Out
2007-03-25 16:53:40
Not too long ago Sarah (M, not A) plonked a clip about the Xbox 360 into our viral vault. It was meant to be an advert but as far as I can see it got banned from TV. Now to follow up, here's the Xbox 360 shoot-out casting. To me it looks like the woman's trying to audition for the All Blacks haka – and personally she's scaring me more than Carter or any of his teammates could. (And no, I'm not taking a jibe at the New Zealand boys. Honest.) Comment on "Xbox 360 Shoot Out"

Powerade Ace
2007-03-25 16:49:24
Wow. The guy can do this and he still struggles to make Federer sweat. Speaks volumes for the Swiss maestro's ability that he can make a world-class player like Roddick look average. I didn't catch this game so I don't know the outcome but I'd guess that technically it'd count as an ace. However I'm sure that they just retook the point. If it did count as an ace then it's probably as close as you can come to the perfect serve. Any thoughts as to what the outcome should be? Comment on "Powerade Ace"

Gender Specific Shower Habits
2007-03-24 09:20:27
I found this clip ages ago while looking for something else on YouTube. It is quite possibly one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I know it’s not an ad but I thought we could all use a laugh, especially since it's not looking good for the SA cricket team at the mo. Isn’t it remarkable how spot on they are?
