Mercadona 2007-03-13 16:04:00 Middian - Age Eternal Download MyspaceWith Age Eternal, the debut from this new three-piece, YOB's legacy is honored without being entirely repeated. There's no denying that Middian follows the same stylistic course as YOB, but overall their doom is darker and less celestial. It's also a hell of a lot more direct. While YOB was no stranger to faster songs, their compositions never had the fierce urgency of “Dreamless Eye.” Even when Middian switches to the slower doom in the second half of this track, it still has a mean, almost fatalistic attitude. It's an attitude that's prevalent throughout the album. What's also commendable is how layered and involving the music is. It's a complex record, with subtle changes that draw you deeper into Middian's world. That makes Age Eternal as emotive as it is heavy. It's unfortunate that comparisons to YOB are inevitable, but from my perspective, they aren't unfavorable. At the most basic level, both bands are excellent. With Age Ete

On "Certainty," the second song here, L'altra takes the listener on a trip; the track doesn't seem content to merely stick with the same formula throughout, instead vying for a more varied, evolving style. This results in something that feels like more than a song, but rather a journey. This style is used throughout the album, and exemplifies L'altra's seperation from the world of the boring "verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-etc." formula.
