Crazy Little Thing - meet Baltimore's Gary B & the Notions!
2007-05-16 12:13:00
The Baltimore independent rock scene is alive and well, thank you. It wasn't that long ago I pointed out that there were some stirring from Maryland. I introduced you that day to The Frenemies - a great Baltimore outfit with a truly unique sound. Today I follow it up with something just as good - and perhaps even more special.... ARTIST OF THE DAYMeet Gary B & the NotionsGary Barrett Jr - sans the NotionsIn the song Lori, Gary Barrett asks, "What's in a Name?" I would suggest a great deal - especially when you have a great name like Gary B and the Notions. GB&TN are an indie rock and power pop outfit in Baltimore. They are responsible for the release of You Get those Crazy Notions! - one of the best new indie releases to come across my desk. Sounding a bit like a cross between Elvis Costello and Ted Leo, the band have much to celebrate these days. Their sound is dynamic and the songs, real.Gary B & The Notions - The Exercise SongTHE NEW ALBUM RELEASEGET THOSE CRAZY NOTIONS!Barrett

Your last chance to Repent - My Tribute to Kurt Vonnegut
2007-05-24 23:45:00
A tribute to a Great Sage and an Important Social Voice - Kurt Vonnegut , dead at 84."There's only one rule that I know of, babies— 'God damn it, you've got to be kind." Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comic talent and urgent moral vision in novels like "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle" and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" caught the temper of his times and the imagination of a generation, died last night in New York. He was 84 and had homes in New York and in Sagaponack on Long Island.* Quantum Leap moment -This is a republish.... 'Tis true. I got into a chat at the pub tonight with someone enraptured with K.V. - we chatted for awhile. I said - "I will republish my Vonnegut tribute. Sure enough. Here it is."Vonnegut's death was reported by Morgan Entrekin, a longtime family friend, who said Vonnegut suffered brain injuries as a result of a fall several weeks ago.Vonnegut wrote plays, essays and short fiction. But it was his novels that became classics of the American countercultur

Ryan Adams plays Ann Arbor Michigan (2003)
2007-02-24 06:50:00
I published this show waaaaaaaaay on back in October of last year when this blog was equally as good, just far less read than it is now. Every so often, I look back and republish something cool - like this live Ryan Adams gig from 2006 in Ann Arbor, Michigan . This is a spiced up live show - An interesting reference to the band The Killers. The 2003 set list contains a few songs that RA no longer seems interested playing live. Ultimately what you have here is pretty damn cool.Enjoy...On fire: In 2003, Ryan Adams was playing Rock with a different set of Killers.Ok - in a nutshell: The year is 2003 and Ryan Adams is touring to support the Rock N Roll album. He has had a great year business-wise but makes one mistake when he elects to name his backing band for the tour "The Killers." This did not rest well with another existing band of "Killers" starring Brandon Flowers. The result was a cease and desist order from their label issued to Mr. Adams. But for several nights on tour - including

There is Hope Yet - GREAT NORTHERN is Artist of the Day
2007-06-02 12:05:00
INDIE ROCK RECORD REVIEW GRADE: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I have been listening to Great Northern's brand new album (available now!) for more than a month now. The Los Angeles four-piece's release is one of the very best records of the new year and it has kept me coming back for more - time and time again. I am happy (and have been anxious) to relay that this is one of the year's best indie record released in 2007! Run out and pick this one up today.the new recordHopeful. That's the clean, golden sound repeated in our ears as we listen to Great Northern's new full-length album: "Trading Twilight for Daylight." You see it's no longer fashionable to be a fatalist these days but there aren't too many promising indie artists who can pull themselves up by the bootstraps and play the role of hope's harbinger. After listening to this 2007 release on Eenie Meenie records - I'm pretty sure Great Northern are ready to take up the torch for the rest of us.Just A Dream - Great NorthernThe Midd

The SnowLeopards - Boston Band is Artist of the Week
2007-06-01 05:54:00
I finally got around to ordering my copy of the SnowLeopards "Debut" album. In-between kicking myself for not doing it sooner, I have been REALLY enjoying the songs. The record is a 2007 release and a must have. RSL ARTIST OF THE WEEKthe SnowLeopardsAt the core of the band is Heidi Lee (vocals and guitars) and Mike Oor (lead guitars). Jimmy Jax (bass) and Jeff Harrington (drums) were added in this latest incarnation of the band and rock out hard on the album. I suppose what I like best about the SnowLeopards (besides that they are from Boston and that they technically very good) is that there's grittiness to their songs that I suppose I did not expect. This album is a celebration in guitar and in the fuzz sound. The album was produced and mixed in part by Bleu, who also lent a hand with guitars, keyboards and percussion. This one is a winner and I am a fan.Hipmatize Me - the SnowLeopardsI'm on Fire (DooDoo) - the SnowLeopardsthe SnowLeopards: myspace*you can pick-up their album for
