The Restoration of Balance
2007-03-11 23:14:00
The Restoration of Balance I stumbled upon an extremely well-written and informative article this week: 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web, by Mark Bernstein, which I encourage you to read in its entirety. Continuing to think about the topic I have focused upon the past couple of weeks, why so many folks are blogging these days, I was fascinated by his very first suggestion: “Write for a Reason.

Today I am thankful for peace and quiet. It is a blessing to hear the silence from time to time. The above cartoon looks like me. Add to the cacophony depicted there the sounds of the washer, dryer, dishwasher, cell and land lines ringing, Blackberry beeping, doorbell chiming, dogs barking, kids yelling, "Mom, did you wash my blue sweatshirt?" or "Mom, do I have any clean socks?" or "Mom, can

Sound Byte Saturday #5
2007-03-10 10:20:00
For today's Sound Byte, I decided to share a clip with you from my all-time favorite storyline on "One Life to Live." In this clip from the Buchanan City 1888 story, Clint Buchanan, portrayed by my very dear friend, Clint Ritchie, begins to realize that he has truly stepped 100 years back in time. This was also Clint Ritchie's favorite storyline because it gave him a chance to do what he

Friday's Feast #134

Appetizer What is your usual bedtime? Do you like that, or would you rather it be different? Every night I swear I'm going to turn in before midnight, but I never seem to make it. It is more typically about 1:30 a.m. or so. Luckily, I have never needed much sleep in order to function. Soup When it comes to advice, do you give more or receive more? In my profession, I give a lot of advice

This is going to be a short entry because I am exhausted! But it is a good kind of exhaustion. The past couple of Sunday s, I have written about my own kids . . . today I am thankful for my youngest nephew. I am exhausted because this afternoon was a very special day in this young man's life: His Court of Honor to commemorate his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. Did you know that out of

Life in the Blogosphere: Why Are We Here? (Part Two)
2007-03-04 09:01:00
Life in the Blogosphere : Why Are We Here? (Part Two ) I concur with Karen’s enthusiastic endorsement of Writer’s Digest. The insightful articles they publish always cause me to think in a new way about why I enjoy writing so much and how I might improve my written products. Currently, in a feature entitled “Becoming Intimate with Your Own Creative Impulses,” author Julia Cameron is interviewed.

The Carnival of Family Life: "So what's the deal with the flute, anyway?"
2007-03-03 09:22:00
This post is an entry in the Carnival of Family Life at An Island Life. This week the Carnival is being hosted by Be A Good Dad. Accompanying me on my upcoming trip to New York City to play at Carnegie Hall will be a very dear friend, my college roommate. We will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of our friendship this year and I had a milestone birthday a couple of months back, while she

Life in the Blogosphere: Why Are We Here?
2007-02-25 18:53:00
Life in the Blogosphere : Why Are We Here? I’ve been doing a lot of reading and thinking about this question: Why blog? With an estimated 55 million blogs now on-line, it seems reasonable to ask why so many people are engaging in this activity. And, more importantly, why so many bloggers comment, facetiously or not, that they are “addicted” or “obsessed” with blogging, can’t live without

This week's theme: Soft "Mom, do you see the resemblance?" I had to snap this photo when Matthew grabbed Sophie and asked me that question. This kid comes home from school, says hello to and plays with the dogs and then thinks to say "hi" to his mother. He walks around the house like this with Sophie quite often and, from her vantage point, she surveys her kingdom. She is soft -- warm and

Appetizer Where on your body do you have a scar, and what caused it? On the back of my left hand, I have a scar about 1 1/4 inches long that I got when my cat, Shivers, jumped out of my arms while digging her back paw into my hand. "I haven't sung a note in years"
2007-02-06 04:00:00
This post is an entry in the Write-Away Contest hosted by Scribbit. It is also included in A Gonzo Blog Carnival. Those were the words I heard on the other end of the phone. The words that stunned me and left me speechless. I know . . . hard to believe that I could be speechless. But I am still completely stymied when I think about it. What I'd love to know is why. Now that I have your

My Heart Belongs to Clint (Part Two)
2006-08-29 09:29:00
Several folks have asked me how long I have known Clint Ritchie personally -- and how we met. Ironically, Robert Wendland had something to do with that, too! Like so many other aspects of my life (so far), this story is stranger than fiction and demonstrates that a) I couldn't make this stuff up and b) the hand of God is upon all aspects of our lives. I began watching One Life to Live, the

An Evening With Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway
2006-03-28 21:38:00
“It was a dark and stormy night” here in Northern California. The drive from Lodi to San Rafael in the late afternoon wasn’t bad, but the drive back home to Lodi was miserable because of the steady, hard downpour which made it extremely difficult to see and fairly treacherous since portions of the freeway were beginning to develop standing water since so much water was coming down quickly. In

The Cost of the Call (Part One): Reflections in Conjunction with the 5th Anniversary of the Wendland Victory
2006-08-07 01:20:00
"Call" is defined as: 1. To order or request to undertake a particular activity or work; summon. He was called to the priesthood. 2. A claim on a person's time or life: the call of duty. 3. A strong inner urge or prompting; a vocation: a call to the priesthood.Among the various definitions I have found for "calling" are: 1. An inner urge or a strong impulse, especially one believed to be
