New road.. 2007-03-11 19:20:00 I finally had a winning day today, albeit a small one as I only had one lay but I'll take it. I did the bet 2 hrs before the race as I decided to take the afternoon off and try and relax a little, and it felt good to not be sat staring at negative numbers for a while. Well the build up to Cheltenham is nearly over, shame I won't be able to watch any of it though! Looking forward to hearing the commentaries though and getting stuck into some horses. I read that Coolmore have decided to replace George Washington with Holy Roman Emporer, a very business related move no doubt and a blow to Aiden's team this year. Anyway, I'm off the losing train for now and hopefully things progress from here on in, there's a fair bit of work to do to catch up the losses so far. I'll make a post in the next few days which should be a little more interesting than just my moaning about losing. It seems people are not so fond of reading about my woes as the visiting levels have really dropped off as of Read more:New road
System Meltdown. 2007-03-10 18:41:00 Endured another loss today of 5.9 points. This is now the 2nd worst run in over 3 years worth of data. Safe to say I'm worried. I think the only positive I can take from today is that the system as a whole is also going through a horrendous stage. I'd of lost over 13 points following the whole thing. The staking plan saved me again today so it actually looks like that's a good find, I must thank Maria. Well this can't last forever and there is still 2/3 of the month to go which leaves plenty of time to recover these mounting losses. I'm actually dropping my stakes tomorrow as 30% of the working bank has gone and following the new staking plan, I drop down when 30% is lost until I get it back under 30%.Nothing else left to say really, I'm also not sure what to say, lol. I'll leave it here until tomorrow I think, it's been a long day and one I want to forget about sooner rather than later.John. Read more:System

It's times like these.... 2007-03-09 18:12:00 That really tests a person's character. My heaviest loss in a long time totalling 9.75 points. It's the first time the revised staking plan helped me out especially with two 9/1 (10.0) winners rocking in. If I'd of been doing level stakes I'd be down 14 points. So March is now in a loss and I'm trying extremely hard to stay positive but when you have not one but two 9/1 shots go in it's easier said than done. It's highlighting another part of discipline as well, what happens during racing stays in racing and letting it effect your life in general isn't the right way to go. My parents have commented that I seem down and deep in thought which is true I guess. I've been going over numbers and results to see if I'm missing something but as far as I can see I'm not. It's been a very long time since the system had such big priced winners too. It doesn't help when you look at the form and scratch your head as to how they won. King After had never won over 10f and the closest he'd
Chin Up. 2007-03-08 18:09:00 Endured my 4th losing day on the run today. A loss of 1.3 points on the day. Nothing major again and it seems to be the trend this week, just small losses everyday. It was a very quiet day anyway with only 1 UK meeting taking place. Hopefully if Sandown pass an early inspection they'll be 4 meetings tomorrow and maybe I can recoup the losses of the last few days. I was reading over my last few posts and realised how negative they were. If I hadn't of included the points lost I'd of guessed I'd of blown the whole bank by how negative I was being when infact I'm pretty much level for March so far.So what it's been a slow start?! Get a grip John! I'm focusing far too much on the short term and not the long term. March can completely turn around in the next week and then continue to improve. It doesn't help being in a negative mindset at all so I've given myself a good kick up the arse. I seriously cannot expect to win everyday and learning to deal with a few bad days is a huge hu
New Low.. 2007-03-07 18:32:00 My current mood: Annoyed and low. Yet another losing day, 3 on the bounce now and its beginning to test my patience. I was going pretty steady until Bright Sparky won and then Trading Trouble shortly followed him in. All my winners came at Catterick, no coincidence I feel. My system overall had every single winner at Catterick today, I said it last month when I go through a bad sequence, all the winners appear to come at the same track on the day. I really cannot explain it. So a loss of 0.5 point on the day, I posted 1.85 on WBX but that's to 5% commission which I do not pay and actually the revised staking plan worked out nicely today. It's not a disastrous loss by any stretch, and I'm still barely in profit for March but I'm just feeling extremely frustrated with it all. One step forward, two steps backwards at present. My strike rate for the month has dropped below 80% for the first time in quite a while, maybe it's just balancing out, I'm not too sure yet.I know things will
Tension? 2007-03-06 19:04:00 Where to start? Well first of all I feel so low it's not even funny. A losing day of 6.9 points using the new staking plan but the loss doesn't bother me so much. Something is bothering me that I can't put my finger on, I don't know if it's to do with posting my selections or not. The thought of people seeing me losing annoys me beyond belief because I know I'm a winner overall. I know I'm being extremely downbeat and this isn't the right approach at all but I'll continue. I think this new staking plan has got me all out of shape too because the last 2 days I'd be better off to level stakes, and I guess it's a psychological thing but starting badly with a new idea is always tough to bare.I really don't know why I'm getting upset/ annoyed as it's still only the 6th day of 31. This month could still surpass last months easily. I'm going to go and drive my car like a madman now (in private of course) and release some tension and pressure. I mean tomorrow could be an excelle Read more:Tension
Boys will be Boys. 2007-03-05 18:43:00 Hmm, not exactly the start I wanted to my new staking plan. I decided after doing some more number crunching to start the new staking plan today. ERROR. Using the new staking plan I lost 2.8 points on the day but if I'd of done level staking like I have since starting I'd of won 1.5 points. These are tiny amounts in the long run but nevertheless an annoying start.Favourites were absolutely flying in, 7 winning in the first 10 races. Just so happens my 4 winners were favourites, lol. I'm not downbeat really, as I was just saying the other day about staying positive, just goes down as a mediocre day.Don't ask me why but I've dragged myself into posting my lays over at WBX forum. It seems a few people think I'm just some silly kid pretending to be someone else under a different name?? Odd to say the least. I've agreed to entertain them by posting my lays until the end of the month. I could even lose this month but I'm confident I won't. Boys will

Staking Plan Uncovered. 2007-03-04 20:24:00 Another quiet day today with just Bangor going ahead but a profitable one nontheless. 3 lays and 3 losers, just the way I like it! I Should be a lot busier tomorrow though with 2 flat meetings and hopefully 1 jump meeting, I'd expect between 15-20 lays tomorrow. As it was a quiet day, I spent a lot time just spuddling around the net and reading a few new blogs and came across Gavin's. He's got a very interesting staking plan, at first I simply dismissed it as being too conservative but my brain went into overdrive when I read a very interesting thread on the expert betting forum here. A very successful story and I've seen Maria around on the Adrian Massey forum. Her staking system worked on the following:( Using BF prices) under 3.5 1% of working bank, 3.6-7.5 0.6% of working bank and 7.6-11 0.4% of working bank. I started playing around with a few figures in a quick excel spreadsheet and changed the figures from 1%, 0.6% and 0.4% to 3%, 1.8% and 1.2%. Using my past results I can ma Read more:Staking
Thought Provoking 2007-03-04 10:17:00 I wasn't actually going to post this but it's a very important issue to me. I love horses, they are a wonderful animal and part of the reason I got into horse racing was due to my love of them. I know animal cruelty exists everywhere and it will never be truly stamped out and sometime this year I want to setup a foundation or contribute to many organisations to help rescue these helpless animals. How any human can shoot an innocent horse in the head and then drag it's carcass on the floor is beyond me and always will be. They don't deserve the air they breathe. In an ideal world, I'd like to own a farm for retired race horses where they can spend their days turned out and in peace. Quite a moving video, it's a very one sided argument but I'm all for helping unraced/ retired race horses live a better life. Read more:Provoking
Emotions. 2007-03-03 18:46:00 A pretty quiet day today even though there were 3 meetings with just 7 lays. Orcadian stopped me from having a clean sweep but still ended up with 2.4 points profit on the day. The ground was extremely soft everywhere today and quite a few big priced winners flew in.Betfair apparently had a security scare at the start of racing and thus all markets were suspended for 15 minutes or so, browsing the BF forum, I saw that a few people had got caught out when mid way through some trades. Not really much they could have done and just one of those nasty turn of luck moments I guess. One comment tickled me though, a guy said '' You just can't get the staff nowadays, the band played till the end on Titanic.'' Amusing to me anyway, lol.I thought I'd write a little post about the effects of emotions involved in betting/ gambling. They play a huge role and can also play chaos with our betting. The importance of trying to stay neutral is probably one of the hardest disciplines to master, I'm
Feeling Blue. 2007-03-02 19:42:00 A mixed day for me really, pretty down about my girlfriend going back but I'll be seeing her again very soon when I move back some time this month, never easy saying goodbye to someone close.Racing went well though and I gained back yesterday's loss and some more. I managed to win 8 points on the day. Holiday Cocktail was my only winning lay and I'm still a little dazed as to how it won. There was a lot of market confidence in it though. Can't win them all as they say.Increasing my stake size certainly makes a difference to liabilities on the slighter longer priced lays but I'm sure I'll get used to it after a few weeks. It also makes a nice difference to the profit too. I also managed to do a few 'green' trades, this time on some more reasonable priced horses. I've nearly ran out of minutes on RacingTraders so I'll be switching to BetAngel for a 2o day trial period to make a comparison. A few people think BetAngel will suit my needs better so I'm interested to see the diffe Read more:Feeling
February Review 2007-03-02 08:15:00 Comparing the actual system results to my own makes for interesting reading. The actual system made 97 points whereas I made 109. Bearing in mind I didn't cut out a lot of lays until mid way through and it records results to SP I'm very pleased I actually beat it. My strike rate finished at 87% compared to 73% to doing all of the lays. I just hope the trend can continue. February
passed extremely quickly, I know it's a couple of days shorter but honestly to me it flew by. So all in all, February was an exceptional month in many ways for me.I didn't have the best of starts to March losing 3.5 points. Two winning lays set me back and I could never quite recover it. So the winning sequence ends but if a bad day is a loss of 3.5 points then I really can't complain. March usually sees a rise in bets overall too as more meetings happen and the start of the flat season at the very end.I think I'm going to write a little post about the effects of winning days and losing days within the n
Icing on the Cake. 2007-02-28 22:02:00 Well I had a superb day to finish the month with, completely over the moon. I had set out all my lays for the day by lunchtime and left them for my Dad to do as I was going dune bashing with my girlfriend and her friend, a lot of fun and a must for anyone visiting a desert country. It was also nice to have a day off without worrying about the racing, it's nice to have a break sometimes I guess. I think it will be very important come this summer too especially with 4/5 meetings a day.I came home to see a lovely profit of 13 points, another day without any winners, on a run of 29 lays without a win at present, nice whilst it lasts. So with today's 13 points it made the total for February to 109 points. Far better than I could of imagined and I'm honestly chuffed to bits with it. Hopefully I can look back on this month as the key month in my very early new career. My research paid off by finding an interesting trend regarding trainers and it's made a massive difference, I'll find out Read more:Icing
Going Up! 2007-02-27 20:36:00 What a difference a day can make. I sat down today and just had that feeling of it being a good day, I was concentrating 110% and generally felt good in myself which I think can only be a good thing.I had 13 lays today and they all lost giving me a nice 13 points profit for the day, I guess everything went my way today, a few of them went very short in running (1.3 and less) and ended up losing. So with today's results I've broken 90 points for the month and just shy of 100, maybe tomorrow can provide a fitting end to the month? It was also a nice feeling knowing that the actual system lost overall today losing 3 points but due to my trainer stats I missed the winners, I'll do a quick report at the end of racing to see the total difference for the month between my results and the actual system results.I also took the opportunity to do a few basic trades on this afternoon's racing. I've noticed quite a trend in horses' prices roughly 30-40 minutes before the race and then also at Read more:Going
Basic Errors. 2007-02-26 20:21:00 Argh, I'm so annoyed with myself. I went out for a meal with some friends this evening and in a moment of stupidity; I decided to put the remaining bets on before I went out. One of my bets was Our Kes and I noticed the graph on BF was going up so took 5.7 (4.7/1). I checked my phone after the race and to my horror saw Our Kes had won at a SP of 2/1!! I haven't a problem with the horse winning but I'm just angry at the fact I rushed and did the bets before I left. Poor discipline on my part. I should have just left the rest of the racing for the day as I was 4.5 points up before I left.I ended the day 1.5 points up as the other bets I did before I left lost also. Maybe a case of being overly confident, a little bit like the film 'Two for the Money' with Al Pacino. If anyone's seen it they'll understand. So a valuable lesson learnt today, some people might be thinking what the big deal is as I ended the day in profit still but I've shown really good control the last 6 weeks and t Read more:Basic

Trying something new. 2007-02-25 21:19:00 I had a pretty busy today with my lays, gaining 4.5 points for the day. It could have been a loss on the day if Black Oval had won in the 4.30 at Kempton. It was a few tense moments to say the least to see the photo finish betting at 1.63 and 2.2. Thankfully it didn't win, I've had a few tight photo finishes lately and it was nice for one to go my way. There was a one horse race today, not in terms of a really strong fancy but actually a race with one horse in, lol. I haven't seen of those in a long time. Nice for the owner no doubt.Today was also the first day I used Racing Traders. I've read a lot about these API products from other blogs and from doing my own research and so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I'm pleased with it, it's got some very useful functions and it refreshes 3 times a second which is good for me. I'm probably not going to get the most out of it as I'm not a trader but from using it today, it was an improvement over the Betfair interface.I t Read more:something
Back on the ball. 2007-02-24 21:34:00 I was back on the winning trail today winning 6 points. I still managed to have a 5.2/1 winner though in Little Big Horse. It seems to be the trend lately having one winner that stops it from being a really good day. Lingfield provided most of my points with 8 successful lays including some very questionable favourites getting turned over. The racing on the AW was excellent today and just made me want the start of the flat season to come even sooner, I really can't explain how much more I prefer flat racing to jump racing.Actually the last 2 days have really highlighted how many lays I've cut down on and how many points I’ve saved since the trainer form filter. If I'd done every single lay on Friday and Saturday I'd be looking at - 18 points, to be 3 points up over the 2 days shows to me what a key role the trainer form is. I'm sure a few people are board of my constant rambling about it but to me it's made my system infinitely better. I'm sure other full time backers/ layers
Winning run ends. 2007-02-23 20:14:00 My first losing day since the 3rd of February today. Lost 3 points on the day, I was actually down 8 points at one stage but the last 5 lays lost thankfully. Slightly annoyed as I was enjoying the run I'd been on but every winning run has to come to an end at some point and 3 points is hardly worth worrying about. I still think I can make 90 points for the month. Just wish so many meetings would stop getting waterlogged!!! Chepstow is off tomorrow but hopefully the other 3 go ahead. The winner that hurt me today was Pieterson, he was matched at 30/1 in running but ended up winning pretty cosily in the end. Outside draw, high handicap mark and questionable distance didn't stop him winning. I'm trying not to over analyse each race but it's hard sometimes. I just need to look at the big picture.Hmm, I think the post about fixed liability and fixed profit is pretty poor so I'll amend a few things tomorrow. Read more:Winning
Fixed Liability and Fixed Profit Laying 2007-02-23 15:58:00 As it's a relatively quiet day on the racing front I thought I'd write a little post about the difference between laying to a liability and to a fixed profit. I lay to a fixed profit as I've looked at both ways and it's quite a lot more profitable for me to lay to a fixed profit. If anyone is wondering what the difference might be, I'd definitely recommend doing some research of past results to find out. I think it depends quite highly on your strike rate and average winning lay. For example, if someone has a strike rate around 60% then I'd say laying to a fixed liability would be more profitable.Laying
to fixed liability simply means you enter how much you're willing to lose if the horse wins. An example would be a horse at 5/1 and the maximum you want to lose is 100 pounds, you'll win 20 pounds if it loses and lose 100 if it wins. A lot of people favour this method as you can lay slightly bigger priced horses without fear of losing a big percentage of your bank. But the flip Read more:Fixed

Sneaky Winners 2007-02-22 23:54:00 I had a good night at Nad Al Sheba, Munaddam absolutely romped home in the sprint. I think he could be winning a Group 3 or Group 2 event back in the UK in the summer. Also had a couple of 2nd's and a 3rd. Godolphin's runners aren't firing at the moment, 2 odds on shots getting beat quite comfortably especially Blue Sky God. There's been talk for the last couple of seasons whether or not the horses benefit from wintering in Dubai, it seems it's not working at present as they've yet to register a winner in the Carnival but I'm not writing them off yet, they have plenty of class in their stable and come Super Thursday and World Cup night I reckon they'll fire in a couple of winners. Also had a productive day in the UK too, winning 4.5 points for the day. A couple of winners at 3/1 and 5/2 held me back having a really good day. That's the way it's gone the last 3 days, good results but just the odd winner sneaking in at a price that drops the profit back for the day but it's to Read more:Sneaky

Nad Al Sheba 2007-02-22 14:06:00 I'm off to Nad Al Sheba
tonight, looking forward to it, I try and go every week whilst the Carnival is on as its always top class racing. I'm taking my laptop with me so I can do my lays for the day in the UK. I'm sure I'll get a few interesting looks, lol. Unfortunately as the UAE is a Muslim country, gambling is illegal so there are no betting stands or a bookies rail. It takes a bit away from the experience but it's still a great night. The parade ring area is free to anyone so it's always packed and a great atmosphere, with a bit of bumping and barging you can get a great view of the winning post. Nothing quite like hearing the whips crack and the hooves rattle along.A few horses I'm looking forward to seeing tonight are Gemology in the 4.00, looks a good proposition for Godolphin and I fancy it to kick start their Carnival winners. Court Masterpiece in the 5.35 looks good too, he's beaten stronger opposition than this and if he's tuned up could go very well. Yasood, Sir G
Flying along. 2007-02-21 21:02:00 I'd like to thank Ray over at The Sports Trader for directing over 120 viewers to my blog today. Only if 10% keep returning I'll be very happy. Also thanks to those that took the time to read my blog, if any of you have any suggestions on posts or otherwise let me know.I'm aching like an old man who's gone 10 rounds with Tyson. I went karting for an hour and being thrown about in a tiny seat takes it toll. I've got bruises everywhere, lol. A lot of fun though, had some mega battles with my brother and some other friends, there were 7 of us so there was someone to always have a little go with. I love karting and I'm a big enthusiast of car racing too, really want to get some trackdays under my belt this summer.I had a good day's racing too, winning 6 points. Wild Pitch cost me 5 points though, I really couldn't see it winning. Just goes to show that racing really isn't an exact science. He ended up hacking up by 7 lengths. Why do I lay and not trade? 2007-02-21 12:41:00 I've been busy reading some other blogs lately and it seems most of them are traders. And of those traders most of them find trading on horse racing or betting on racing very trivial and boring. I even saw one person say it's not possible to be profitable. What a load of nonsense.I can see the appeal in trading, and it's something I might persue later in the year but there isn't much excitement compared to laying in my opinion. I'm sure trading on an exciting football game or cricket is pretty fun but overall I'd have to say laying has more interest. A lot of people trade because they like the fact they never really have a big exposure whereas I can sometimes have quite large exposures when laying a horse at 8/1 or so. Would I class what I do as gambling? Well yes it is but I like to think there is a high percentage of skill involved. It sounds easy enough to find a horse to lose in every race but if you actually sat down and did it, I think quite a few would be surprised. I've
Market Movers 2007-02-19 23:33:00 Quite a lively day today, had 12 lays and I was sitting very pretty with 11 out of 11 losing until Halcion Chancer in the 5.10 at Lingfield. I managed to get it at 3.65/1, midway through its mammoth drift. Unfortunately the market got it wrong this time and it won just in the nick of time, getting up in the last few strides, it did the same last time, drifted alarmingly before the off from 2.8 to 5.1 and still won. Very odd. So a profit of 7.35 points for the day, certainly nothing to grumble about. It put me over 63 points profit for February so far, much better than expected with 9 days still left, I'm hopeful of a 90 points month.I want to talk about market drifters today, as there are usually at least 1 or 2 a day. Nick Millard said something interesting on Sports Live today, saying that a drifting horse wouldn't stop him from putting a bet on that particular horse as the horse doesn't know it's drifting. Well of course the horse doesn't know it's drifting the same as the hor Read more:Market

A Corner Turned? 2007-03-12 18:36:00 I had another small winning day today, gaining 2 points. Could of been a lot better had Mamlo Boy not won but given my recent run, I'll take any profit I can right now. So two winning days on the run now and hopefully things have turned a corner. There's been quite a bit of discussion about my staking plan over at WBX and the guy I've been discussing it with called it nuts. I couldn't disagree any more to be honest as to level stakes I'd be over 12 points worse off and countless people use level stakes fixed profit staking. I think the most thing he was alarmed about was the fact I'm willing to risk 11% of my bank on one bet, his point being I could go bust after 8 bets. Whilst that is mathematically correct, statically the odds of the system having 8 winning bets in a row at 6.5/1 (7.5) are so huge I'm not willing to factor it into consideration when thinking about my staking plan. I like my staking plan for several reasons, it's very aggressive and maximises a winning streak a
Record Keeping.. 2007-03-13 18:45:00 Well the first day of Cheltenham is over with a lot of big priced winners. I'm hoping somebody uploads a few races to Youtube tonight. I had another small winning day today, Nimello the monkey stopped me from having a clean sweep, I really, really couldn't see it winning and I'm not sure how he was favourite, one of the small mysteries in life I guess. So 1.3 points was clawed back and that's three winning days on the bounce now, hoping for similar results tomorrow. The staking plan yet again proved itself as to level stakes I'd be 0.5 point down on the day.I just want to quickly talk about the importance of record keeping. I have quite a few friends who have bets regularly on the weekend or when they have a fancy and I even know some people who bet very often yet do not keep a record of their bets or results. This to me is crazy and has a psychological effect on the mind. Ask any of them and they'll likely answer with 'Yeah I win in the long run, no doubt'. The most likely scen Read more:Record
Grinding it out. 2007-03-14 20:31:00 I didn't have the best of days today and starting with two winning lays always makes for hard work but I managed to claw back over £500. I would have actually made a profit to level stakes but using the new staking plan I was down 2 points. It's just swings and roundabouts really, having 2 winners in the 3% bracket hurt and when the other 5 bets are outside the maximum 3% bracket its tough going. I did a couple of horses IR today and luckily managed to get 3% on a SP of 7/1, it even went as low as odds on IR but I took 4.0 (3/1).I just feel as if I need a couple of clean sweeps the next few days to really get the ball rolling and really get back on track and maybe squeeze a profit out of March. I'm not going to push things but I'd definitely be hopeful of a clean sweep soon! There was a lot of excitement today at Cheltenham with some huge bets going around and I think several massive bets were landed with Denman, a quality horse. I actually found a live feed to watch the racing but Read more:Grinding
Not again... 2007-03-15 18:36:00 A very frustrating day today with a loss of 4.8 points. It now means I'm down 18 points for March, there are 16 days left however but my overall feeling right now is I just hope to pull back some of the loss. The two horses I thought would have no chance ended up winning, I'm really struggling at the minute getting a handle on how the horses that are winning are doing so. Racing is all about opinions of course but to me Cerebus was a strong, strong lay. There's no point dwelling on it though I just need to focus on pulling back these 18 points. My day wasn't as bad as some though, lol, I saw somebody had bet £120,000 on Mighty Man to win the World Hurdle, ouch. Ah well, onwards and upwards as they say.
Much Needed. 2007-03-16 22:04:00 I had just the day that I much needed today and spirits have been lifted a little. I made 4.8 points today and my strike rate was somewhat closer to what it has been. If I can manage several more days like today then I'll be a lot, a lot happier. I've been thinking I've been pretty lucky I've endured this losing run whilst still in Dubai, I think had it happened at home and so soon would of been soul destroying, at least here I've been able to talk to my Dad who offers me some excellent advice. I don't really mention him much but he's a mindful of knowledge on everything I ever want to know and he has done some pretty amazing things in his life, part of my aspirations come from him. No doubt I'll be calling/ emailing him for more advice when I'm home.Well, Kauto Star won the Gold Cup in very impressive fashion, if I was a backer, I couldn't have backed him at his odds though considering his jumping has been in the spotlight. I'm sure his owner is over the moon with the £1,0
Result 2007-03-17 19:22:00 Get in! Finally had the day I've been wanting/ needing for the last couple of weeks. I've gone and messed up with regards to the points I've stated on here, as the new staking plan doesn't work in points but percentages. As 30% of the bank went, I had to drop my stakes.
