Tess' report
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This is from Tess who went to Macbeth no less than thrice, last Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Thanks for sharing this.On Thursday, I was in line at 6:20 a.m. and was third in line. On Saturday, I came about the same time, and was 12th to 15th in line. I think you can get better seats on weekdays than weekends. I got second row, middle section. During the weekends is when the locals watch the play. Also, on Sunday, I decided to line up at the cancellation line and was able to get a ticket. I heard that there was a really long line Saturday night and yet everyone got a ticket.I know people didn't like JE's interpretation of Lady M and at first I didn't either. I thought she needed to be more over the top (like the queen in Once Upon a Mattress) but then I talked to a man in line and he said she may have been portraying a beautiful lady with an evil mind. More subtle and deceiving. And yes, he was right! She was funny when M saw the ghost. She also played down her craziness

More from Dave
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Dave's the one who articulated the bipolar theory below. Gracias to him for letting this extra bit of our correspondence be posted. He gives this caveat in advance:I am in no way any type of theatre authority nor can I claim being correct in Ehle's interpretation. This was just how I interpreted what I saw that particular night. And continues thusly:It really was a big departure from the normal Evil Queen-from-Snow-White interpretation where the Lady is simply power-hungry and cruel and then becomes a sniveling whiner and we are beaten over the head with the whole "this is what happens when...". I hope the critics take pause to realize she isn't being so cookie-cuttered and it really worked but it did take a bit of time to process. I've noticed that when Ehle's various characters get excited, whether it be for good or bad, she talks quite quickly and as Lady M is in excitable circumstances, she really flies through the lines, and Shakespeare certainly needs a bit of time to dige

Report from the Delacorte, part 2
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Hoorah for cross-pollenation of fandoms! dssm from the Liev Schreiber forum is now a convert. She's the one who provided the first ever Macbeth report and has just kindly sent in this autographed program from her second trip. Click to see the enormo version.dssm also has a report up at the forum. Mosey on by to see how she managed to get the above, and for some info about the standby queue. The play was even better than I remembered. Overall, I'd say the biggest difference between the opening night & one week later, was the absence of opening-night jitters. The cast seemed bolder - physically & vocally - more confident with their lines (& no mike problems!) & footing. I tried to take note of the little things - since it's those little nuances that can make an actor's performance so them - part of what I love about theater - you can get something different every night out of the same play. Things like the Weird Sisters hopping over bodies on the stage, rather tha

Blogosphere chatter

Bipolar, Hilary Clinton, Cole Porter ingenue, Grace Kelly and now country club trophy wife. Most intriguing, the range of reponses to Jennifer Ehle's Lady Macbeth. The latest is from Lynn's LJ.Macbeth was fantastic. There are no bad seats in that theater. The performance was amazing. Liev Schreiber has my everlasting respect as an actor. Jennifer Ehle played Lady Macbeth very close to the chest, which I appreciate. She was like the most conniving, blonde country-club wife. Not the ham-fisted dripping-with-evil interpretation. Just an overly ambitious trophy wife playing with forces she doesn't understand. I'd never seen it performed before, so this was a treat. The weather was fantastic, and considering it's really just a ghost story, the weather was really conspiratorial. There were times when a breeze picked up that were uncanny considering the dialog on stage. And there were bats, of course, drawn by the lights. Also appropriate. But the highlight for today is the first in-depth

Ehlenews review
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Of Macbeth, by Ann.I saw Macbeth on Saturday night. After reading some of the online review s, I am amazed. My friend and I enjoyed it. The theater was full and I didn't notice anyone leaving at intermission. There was enthusiastic applause (some standing) at the end. I am a fan of Jennifer's and I have never disliked her work, so I am not the most reliable reviewer, but the woman next to me had never heard of Jennifer. At intermission, she told me how much she liked Jennifer's performance.Unfortunately, I don't have any stage door stories. I didn't know where to look, there were a lot of people, and it was very late. I was just happy to have seen her perform again. The experience of waiting for the tickets was very pleasant. I got there at 9 and got to sit on a park bench in the shade for 4 hours. There were interesting people to talk with and wonderful dogs to look at. It did make for a very long day, so I made a donation and got another ticket for July.

There's been a surprising lack of articles about The Philadelphia Story even though previews started yesterday. Perhaps more will come out after the press night on May 10th. Meanwhile, whet your Ehle appetite with these tiny, grainy, scratchy multimedia offerings.Clips of The Real Thing and award shows on this Stephen Dillane site.Trailer for This Year's Love dubbed in Spanish.Clips from the audiobook Witch Child, written by Celia Rees.Clip from The Tempest audiobook.Jennifer Ehle takes part in the American Theatre Wing's round-table seminar on working in the theatre. [edited: wrong link changed- thanks to Robb Perry]Possession trailer. There have been several articles about Kevin Spacey's run so far as the artistic director at the Old Vic, mentioning The Philadelphia Story. The latest is the Times' "Has Spacey lost the plot at the Old Vic? No, it's only act 2". Unfortunately no mention of Jennifer Ehle.

Another Tony prediction for Ms Ehle at BroadwayWorld.A review of Coast of Utopia in Cleveland's Plain Dealer.Masha Lipman of the New Yorker interviewed Tom Stoppard on Utopia in December (hope this isn't a doublepost). Some release dates for Pride and Glory are up at IMDB. Looks like it'll be around September 19.And a reminder, the Alpha Male DVD is coming out January 22. From, er, Пропавший · без · вести, a Voyage review.Nicholas Stankevich (David Harbour) and Liubov Bakunin (Jennifer Ehle) play a notably endearing young couple and their lost relationship fills the play with a sense of quiet tragedy. Their love is cast aside in Stankevich's pursuit of higher thought, and both of them die alone and separated without ever acting upon their feelings. Their loss - which goes unspoken by the other characters - is the play's lasting statement: when human feeling is ignored, what is the meaning of revolution?Twingomatic also has a positive mention of Voyage.A LCT

= gold! Thanks a million to Jodes for doing this mega writeup about her eventful trip to Utopia. As it's long, I've posted the full report at the forum, where a new thread has been created for y'all to post your Coast of Utopia reports as well. No registration is required. Check out the bit at the end of Jode's report, where those of you who are unable to see the show may have the chance to score a free Playbill. Though seriously, if you live anywhere within the Northern Hemisphere (or even further - Australia!)...sell your car, abandon your children and get to the Vivian Beaumont already.[...] In Voyage I sat about 5 rows from the stage and watched Jennifer interact with many other actors as a much more demure and deferential character among a host of others with comic lines. In Shipwreck I watched from the balcony as she captivated the entire audience with her performance as Natalie. Lively, beautiful, witty, strong, tragic, desperate...Jennifer easily leads you through the gamut

Reviews + Post Gazette Offer
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Post Gazette gives a review on the Coast of Utopia:It's a cunning and poignant title, since giving utopia a coast makes it seem like an actual place -- which I guess reformers do believe -- while also suggesting its difficulty of attainment. A coast isn't the thing itself, just its approaches. It may also be a cruel mirage distantly glimpsed, or it may be the site of a shipwreck. To extend this metaphor, Stoppard names the three plays "Voyage," "Shipwreck" and "Salvage" -- a perfect arc of hope, catastrophe and tentative rebirth. They also mention their offer: "to see Tom Stoppard's epic, theatrical "Coast of Utopia" trilogy at Lincoln Center, April 13-15.The group travels Friday morning and returns late Sunday; the three plays are scheduled for Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon. Included in the package price of $1,379 per person, double occupancy, are round-trip air fare from Pittsburgh, New York airport transfers and porterage, two nights at a convenient hotel, th

Breaking news!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This just in from the BBC. I'm speechless!Andrew Davies has been commissioned by the BBC to adapt the sequel to Pride and Prejudice, following the recent discovery of Jane Austen's long-lost manuscript by Professor A. Fewell of the University of Phoenix. Both Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle have agreed to reprise their roles as the proud and prejudiced lovers. They will be accompanied by several other members of the 1995 Pride and Prejudice cast. The new mini-series, tentatively titled Pride and Prejudice: the Golden Years, is said to cover Elizabeth and Darcy's married life. Rumour has it that Davies plans to begin from the couple's nuptial night, which has already drawn disapproval from Austen purists.Davies and Austen were unavailable for comment.

More on Melissa and River King DVDs
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here's the latest from Graham of Play.com. Nice chap.Hi again Tina,I'd just like to apologise for not getting you a reply regarding River King. However, it looks as though the July release date could be fairly realistic from the information at my disposal...As for Melissa : that would be Channel 4, distributed by Lace. The DVD release was only announced on the 16/03/06, so that would explain the apparent contradiction on Channel 4's part.Cheers,Graham.p.s. I didn't actually know who she was until I checked out your link, last time you contacted me (putting faces to names and all that). She's a very talented and beautiful actress. Keep up the good work!

Pride and Prejudice update

Alas, not a sequel, just a renovation of the BBC's Pride and Prejudice website. There's a biography of Ms Ehle and other players, backstage photos, wallpapers and other goodies. The episode guide includes video clips from the series. UK residents can also enter a competition for a free anniversary edition DVD.(Just had to throw that one in. Sigh.)

The River King viewer reviews
1970-01-01 00:59:59
On IMDB, there are now some reviews of The River King. Not all of them are nice, though. One viewer wrote:I don't know why it is called "The River King", but it is a compelling movie. It has a good story line. There are some great possible endings and at least one of the best was selected. Any weak moments are covered over pretty well by the fine, believable acting of Edward Burns. Jennifer Ehle is worth watching anytime. Rachelle LeFevre should do well in the acting business. I'd recommend the movie to anyone who is interested in entertainment without unrealistic computer graphics. It was most entertaining. While it may well perpetuate the "myth" that all elite schools have bad boys leading other bad boys in deadly hazing rituals, it does not portray them in a good light.

From She thinks therefore she is:Sure Ralph Fiennes's acting was seamless and well done, especially considering he played a different role for each generation. But, I was really truly most impressed by the talents of both women who played Valerie Sors, younger (Jennifer Ehle) and older (Rosemary Harris). They were truly the heart of the film.

On Kerala and Kerala
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yep, it's being reported as Kerala again. Anyhow, this CineSouth article explores Santosh Sivan's relationship with his homeland.Cinematographer Santosh Sivan is making a film once again. This time, it's an English film, set in historical times in Kerala.Santosh Sivan is a Malayali, but he learnt his art in Tamilnadu. His films 'Dalapathi,' 'Roja' and 'Iruvar' brought him fame in Bollywood. 'Malli' and 'Terrorist' that he directed won national recognition. Having carved a niche for himself in Indian cinema, he is now concentrating on making a film about the history of his homeland. One of his recent efforts is 'Ananthabadram' in which Santosh Sivan has played upon the unique culture of Kerala, especially its black magic and occult background.Hs forthcoming film 'Kerala' also is about the Malayali way of life. The best way in which to reach nationally and globally is to make the film in English and that's why Santosh Sivan opted to make 'Kerala' in English.Nandita Das

From the back of the closet
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here's a review for Tartuffe from (gasp) 1991....Jennifer Ehle as Orgon's wife also manage to tread the borderlines of farce and moral fable with admirable aplomb, so that we don't really need the rather ponderous scenic signaling by which Hall has the playing area darkened by shutters as Tartuffe's plot thickens, only to have them opened again when the King's Messenger brings a last-minute, if equally improbable, reprieve...And from the same website that the Painter of Dishonour reviews came from, there are three reviews on The Relapse."Susan Tracy's razor-sharp Berinthia is also allowed to assume the acceptable face of adultery by sharing a moment of fond feminine intimacy with the delightful Jennifer Ehle, the cousin whose husband she fully intends to bed.""Its main exponent is Amanda (a touching, intelligent Jennifer Ehle), who, having learned that bored husband Loveless (the excellent Hugh Quarshie, back in Stratford where he belongs) has committed adultery, must somehow res

Now there's a blast from the past! I thought it was high time we find out about some of the older/obscurer works of Jennifer Ehle. Beware of some negative bits.DouglasHenshall.com has several reviews . Here are the relevant exerpts."Jennifer Ehle is fine indeed as the wife Serafina, voice and bodice a-tremble as she is racked between the demands of love and honour. ""As Serafina, Jennifer Ehle's bosom heaves affectingly apparently possessed by a fear of death as much as dishonour, hardly surprising given that a figure of death in a red mask pops up at all the best parties.""Jennifer Ehle - equipped with strikingly beautiful cheekbones and breasts - is so constrained by Serafina's high nobility that she almost never once sounds natural. ""Jennifer Ehle, Douglas Henshall, Clifford Rose and others resist the temptation to send it all up, which is much to their credit: and John Carlisle goes further. His Don Juan ends up in one of those moral predictaments so loved by Spanish Golden Age

Road to the Sky to get Indian release too
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Looks like Road to the Sky is the title now. Anyhow, this Deccan Chronicle article isn't online, but you can read it and see a photo of Rahul Bose through the Google cache.Rahul Bose has just completed shooting for Hollywood banner Echo Lake Production's Road To The Sky. Set in 1937, the film tells the story of two friends, one British and the other Indian, and how the British friend ruins the friendship and brings it to an end. "The British actor plays a married man in the film while my character is single. The screenplay is an adaptation of a story from Israel. Though the film is set in 1937, it's not an epic or a period film," says Rahul.Road To The Sky has been directed by ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan. "Echo Lake Productions chose Santosh to direct the film. Santosh asked me to play the character of the Indian guy. The film also stars British actress Jennifer Ehle and Nandita Das," says Bose. According to him, besides a worldwide release, Road To The Sky will hit

New York Times review
1970-01-01 00:59:59
An analytical review on The Real Thing by Ben Brantley of the New York Times .These are the sections that mention Ms Ehle."And with the delectable Jennifer Ehle playing self-confident body to Mr. Dilane's self-questioning mind, the show has a sensual sparkle that was less evident in the fine Tony-winning New York incarnation of 1984 with Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close.""Fortunately, there is another side to be heard from, and it is ably embodied by Ms. Ehle. This rising star, best known as Elizabeth in the recent television adaptation of ''Pride and Prejudice,'' wears her character's sensuality, and her awareness of its effect on others, without coyness or irony. There is no smugness about her either (and there was, a bit, in Ms. Close's portrayal), but there is a remarkable self-possession, especially evident in the smile with which she covers discomfort. This Annie easily holds her own against the older Henry and his artillery of words.""Watch, for example, Ms. Ehle's postures w
