Things to Do in Las Vegas, A Guide with Pictures 2008-06-01 22:07:00 A series of posts about possible things to do - other than gambling or partaking in the nightlife - in Las Vegas
. With pictures. My brother accrued enough comp points to room and feed me at a hotel (Bally's, on the Strip, no less!) so I decided to fly out to Vegas to sightsee and to see the family. The comp didn't cover airfare, so I booked a ticket with JetBlue thru Expedia; I got the ticket less Read more:Guide

Las Vegas - Day Three: Red Rock Canyon Pictures 2008-06-01 11:53:00 Red Rock Canyon
was an easy 20-minute drive out of Las Vegas
. We just took Route 159 West straight down; it's got a lot of traffic lights while you're still in the city itself, but it's the most direct route. Getting in is $5 per car.As always, click the image to see it full-size.Not surprisingly, the canyon is named for red rocks.Red Rock has a bunch of hiking trails (list available here) dotted Read more:Pictures

New York to Tax Online Purchases 2008-06-01 11:15:00 New York is so outrageous with its taxes. Starting today, they are going to start charging taxes on purchases made at online retailers - until today, they only charged taxes on online purchases from retailers who had a real physical presence (brick and mortar) in the state. Both Amazon.com and Overstock.com are suing the state and hoping for an injunction on this new law:://news.cnet.com/8301-10 Read more:New York
Las Vegas - Day Two: the Glass Skywalk at Grand Canyon West 2008-05-30 21:32:00 A review with pictures. In short, it was huge rip-off. At every single stage of the trip to the skywalk (and thus, GrandCanyon
West), the operators charged the most eye-popping, exorbitant fees that tested the very limits of shamelessness. If you go, prepare to feel violated! The trip began with a drive down US-93 (passing the Hoover Dam) for 70 miles from Las Vegas

Las Vegas - Day One: Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, with Pictures 2008-05-30 21:31:00 The Hoover
Dam is only about 30 miles down US-93 from Las Vegas

The drive was very scenic: it was a sunny day, the sky was bright and blue and the mountains were dramatic. As always, click the image to see it full-size.Heading down US-93 to Hoover Dam.On the way there we passed by Lake Mead, the man-made lake created as a result of the dam. Plasq's "Comic Life" 2008-05-21 19:21:00 A quick attempt at making a comic strip with Plasq's Comic
Life program. The first time I tried this program at Best Buy, I was hooked and really wanted to get a Mac. Really. Thankfully, Plasq makes a version for Windows too. It's a bit of a system hog, though. to see full post with images.

Quick Hop to Roosevelt Island 2008-01-13 16:18:00 I was walking around the city when I saw an interesting building on 60th and 2nd.There was some sort of car hanging on a wire and thought that it was some aerial sightseeing tour of the city. Not wanting to miss any touristy opportunities, I dashed up the stairs, but noticed that there were the standard subway turnstiles at the gate. My initial enthusiasm quickly subsided as I realized that this w Read more:Quick

A Walk in Central Park 2008-01-07 13:06:00 Central Park (or any other park) seems to be a good place to start for the amateur photographer. The First Post 2008-01-06 22:03:00 In an attempt to free myself - at least on the weekends - of the tediousness of my job in finance, I decided to try my hand at photography. I'm a beginner/amateur at best for now (hence "dilettante"); I only purchased my first dSLR last fall, so I would appreciate any comments/critiques/questions of the images I put up here.I keep most of my photos on Flickr, but I thought I'd showcase some of the Read more:First

Kiva: Loans that Change Lives 2007-03-03 00:35:00 My neighbors are really nice people and they do a lot of charity work - something that is absolutely commendable. When they've sent out their letters requesting donations to the various causes they support, I usually haven't had a problem forking over a Jackson or so. I don't know if it's just because they feel that I'm a reliable donor or if they hit everyone with the same frequency, but it feels Read more:Loans

Digicom? 2007-02-22 00:21:00 I took an unusually careful look at my credit card statement last week, and, unfortunately, noticed an unusual charge:DIGICOM 866 569 101 OF 01866-5691010for $50. Then after looking back several dozen entries, I noticed two smaller charges, from the same company. Since I buy a lot of stuff online, at first I thought it was just an weird billing name for something I had bought. But more careful res

's Powershot s500.I was shopping at Best Buy with my friend, who decided on the SD110, the smallest in the ELPH series. However, after a little research, I found that the s500 is only marginally larger than its smaller sibling. Even so, this marvel can slip into my front pocket easily and takes superb pictures. What I've Done 2008-06-03 01:08:00 A Personal NarrativeNo, the video doesn't really have anything to do this entry, except that it's a song I really like and that it shares the name of my post. I wasn't sure if I'd put personal entries on this particular blog, but I figure why not - except I'm probably not going to clog it up with the tiny minutiae of my life, like I did in my xanga blog freshman year. Project 365: Day 2 - Trees 2008-06-05 18:36:00 So this was the other house in my neighborhood to have a tree fall due to the tornado. Project 365 - Day 4: Underground 2008-06-07 14:48:00 I went into DC today. Project 365 - Day 3: Macro Flowers 2008-06-06 16:55:00 I tried using my macro lens again today. I even used my tripod, but this was the best shot I could get - the tripod I have is pretty crappy and really isn't meant for use with a SLR. I probably should have stopped down the lens a bit more because the edge of the flowers are still a bit out of focus. Picture taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. ISO 200; 1/400 second at f/9.0.
