Sony Announces Its First Wireless Digicam Although some big names have banked on wireless digital cameras going mainstream—namely, Kodak, Nikon, and Canon—Sony has opted to stay disconnected from the trend, at least until today. Sony launched its first wireless digital point-and-shoot ultracompact camera, the six-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-G1, which will be able to use an infrastructure connection to 802.11b and g networks to send images over Wi-Fi networks. Sony also claims the camera will also be able to communicate (via peer-to-peer or ad-hoc connections) with other Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-enabled devices, such as another camera or a PC.

Yeah, mobile phones have been status symbols and fashion accessories for some time now, but the concept of a designer's name taking top billing in the product name is a fairly recent development. If Gucci really does have a handset baking in the oven, we're guessing the Italian icon isn't doing the heavy lifting of the development all by its lonesome, though we haven't an inkling who might be involved. Heck, we can't even really make out what kind of form factor we have going on here, and all we've got is this one lonely pic up on flickr to go by. Its vice president and Asia, Middle East and Africa business team leader, Bo H Choi, said the targeted market share would represent sales of 440,000 units of its mobile phones. Bo said LG was confident that its two latest models in the Black Label series, LG Shine KE970 and the PRADA Phone, would receive similar demand from users in Malaysia once they were launched here next month. Its Chocolate phone model is the first of its premium Black Label series. Since its launch in Malaysia last year, the LG Chocolate model has been the company's bestseller.

Samsung's 8GB Flash ChipSamsung Electronics Co. has begun shipping samples of an 8GB flash memory chip, enough to store up to 2,000 songs on a mobile phone, the company said today. It expects to begin mass-producing the moviNAND chip, which it called the highest-capacity embedded flash memory device developed so far, by the end of the year. Samsung's moviNAND line combines flash memory and firmware in an embedded chip for mobile phones and other portable devices. The chips use the widely-used multimedia card (MMC) interface, allowing manufacturers to integrate them into devices faster and more cheaply, Samsung said. The MMC also allows for fast data transfers. The new chip can process 52MB of data per second, double the performance of Samsung's 4GB chip, the company said. Samsung started producing 1GB and 2GB moviNAND chips last September. It expects worldwide sales of the chips to reach $4 billion by 2010, it said.
