Zero-emissions around-the-world trip complete 2006-11-14 16:08:31 This is only the second complete
d human-powered circumnavigation I know about: Tim Harvey circles the planet in 893 days. (The first was expedition Canada. So far it seems the Canadians have cornered the market, but there is at least one Brit on his way into the club.

Climbing all 741 Colorado 13′ers 2006-11-15 22:43:05 I’ve always preferred the 13,000+-foot peaks in Colorado
as a great way to avoid the circus crowds on the 14′ers. Peter Stabolepszy talks about his recent completion of the 741-peak ticklist. He seems to have a good attitude.

Review of hundreds of ecological studies says extinctions have begun 2006-11-21 14:23:03 University of Texas biologist Camille Parmesan reviewed 866 studies, concluding that extinctions
caused by a rapidly warming world have begun, citing the extinction of 70 species of mountain-dwelling frogs. No other specific extinctions are referenced, but they may include more mountain-top-dependent species like the frogs, and possibly polar species like emperor penguins and polar bears, she predicts. She acknowledges that evolutionary changes are underway to compensate for the changing environment, but that they can’t keep pace with the rapidity of the environmental changes. I wonder how long it will be before the changes are dramatic enough to enter our common consciousness?

Paula is alive 2006-11-21 16:17:57 I was getting a little worried about adventurer Paula
Constant, as she seemed to be having some trouble out there in the Sahara. Finally she has posted, and what a post! If that’s not adventure, I don’t know what is. Go Paula!

Everytrail.com 2006-11-27 03:06:59 A new outdoor map-sharing website hits the scene: EveryTrail.com. This one looks like it has some money behind it. At first glance it seems to have many desirable features covered: topos, elevation profiles, markers, photos, GPX import & editing, map embedding for your blog, Google Earth interface. It may be lacking good printing and search options, but there’s definitely enough there that I’ll be playing with it some more.

Sushi guilt 2006-11-27 20:24:58 Becoming conscious of the environmental impacts of my diet has been painful. Today, wondering if I can continue to eat Sushi
in good conscience, I found this AlterNet article. It definitely takes some of sparkle out of the Sushi craze. Thankfully, there are a few environmentally viable options left: squid, Pacific Halibut, New Zealand hoki, or talapia. The general guideline for sustainable seafood is to move down the food chain. At the store, buy from Marine Stewardship Council approved fisheries (symbolized by a blue fish with a checkmark).

Flaws in mass extinction predictions 2006-12-01 19:46:45 My last question led me to this article, which contends that mass extinction
predictions fail to account for the self-balancing effects of climate change. While ice caps shrink, for instance, vegetation in rainforests may increase. The fact that past climate temperature increases similar to those predicted have not caused mass extinctions is cited. I’d like to find some past predictions and see how close they were.

13 aquatic species discovered in Venezuela 2006-12-01 19:32:36 Tally up some new shrimp, catfish, manta rays, and meat-eating piranha from a recent survey of a confluence in Venezuela
. As with most species
discoveries these days, some may already be threatened. Where is the tipping point, I wonder, between species discoveries and extinction discoveries? For now at least the former seem more prevalent.

Extinction by Ebola? 2006-12-08 15:04:37 Primatologists estimate that 5,000 West African gorillas have been killed by the Ebola virus. Combined with hunting, they say this could wipe them out. Ironically, hunting is one way Ebola is suspected to pass from gorillas to humans.
Fee Creep 2006-12-11 19:39:03 National Parks Traveler does some analysis of the whopping National Park Pass fee increases for 2007. This, as just this weekend I discovered a fourth type of park pass in my area: in addition to the national, state, and county parks surrounding us, each with their own pass, the city of Fort Collins sells its own pass for at least one park near the city. Enjoy your public lands, if you can afford them.

Northwest grizz doing well 2006-12-26 17:05:22 While hiking the CDT in 2004 I encountered some of the researchers collecting hair samples for a Grizzly population count in the area. The counts are now in: a minimum of 545 individual Grizzly bears were found. This is higher than anyone expected, showing that at the moment at least Grizzlies are faring better than polar bears. They must also keeping away from humans for the most part to account for our low expectations, another good sign.
